“The moments of happiness we enjoy take us by surprise. It is not that we seize them, but that they seize us.” I'm in love with owls and elephants. Today I participated in the Miles for Smiles 5th annual Child Abuse Prevention Walk. I connected with Bev (the wonderful lady beside me in the photo) to inform her that I wanted to participate in the walk. I participated in this walk today not only to show how mental health is affected by childhood abuse, I participated to help raise awareness surrounding Child Abuse as a whole topic. You don't hear very often about someone telling their story, this can be for many reasons. They could have been threatened to keep quiet, bribed, controlled into thinking that it's normal. It's not normal. It's not normal but that doesn't mean that it's not okay to get help or to tell someone. "Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal." I struggle every day with the loss of my Dad. It's been two years now, that's 731 days since I've seen one of the strongest men in my life. I miss you every day and it hurts me so much. The loss of a parent is so hard, I still grapple with my anger with God and I wonder why me, why my family. At 16, you'd never think your Dad would be the elephant in the room because he passed away, even now at 18 it's a hard topic. I talk about him as much as I possibly can and I tell my friends stories about him in his life. I watched him struggle for a lot of years after he was medically released from the military and he's part of the reason why I found myself drawn to being a part of Fog Off Clothing Co. I find myself feeling so guilty most days because I find it very hard to see him in my mind, when I try to think of his face it's so muddled and I can't see it clearly. My memories are being distorted and I just wish I could hear that voice picking up the phone one more time. I post pictures of me smiling and I post pictures of me being out and about doing things, that doesn't mean I don't have a roller coaster of crazy things happening in my head. It doesn't mean I don't know about mental health, I can promise you that. I know more about mental health than you might want to at 18. I had my first real anxiety attack at 16 while my Dad was in the hospital, can you imagine? I had no idea what an anxiety attack even was until I had one and since my Dad died, I've had many more. It's okay to cry sometimes and you have to learn that on your own. I mourn for my loss today as well as celebrate the time my Daddy was here on this earth. I will always and forever cherish the time I did get to spend with my Dad and the bond we shared and strengthened especially as I got older and we talked more about his life and his past. An adult who wasn't brought up with the positivity required to healthily combat the treacherous ups and downs of life might find it difficult to bounce back from something painful. Mental positivity, Body positivity, school positivity, physical activity positivity, these are all so important. No child should ever bear the crushing weight of negative thoughts about their bodies, their ability to make friends, their self worth or anything else. I'll be honest, almost every winter, unless I'm out and about playing in the snow for most of it, I feel the blues. Yesterday was the most stunning day, I studied outside, my boyfriend and I went for a drive with the sun roof open and the windows down, then after supper Steven and I went for a lovely little walk. After that, the family had a fire and roast. Forward to today, I woke up to snow! I actually couldn't believe my eyes, after the most stunning day yesterday, the snow is just building up once again!
