full_v2023_01-05.odt for the WIP ask game.
(the ask meme)
A glass prism from Ford’s desk had taken a swan-dive straight onto the floorboards, covering the replacement rug in dainty little shards. A ballpoint pen spun like a broken compass in the middle of it, sketching a thin circle of ink in its wake. A long, baffled second passed.
Ough, that's an old one, haha! This is actually my WIP document for a fic I have partly posted: Rescue Mission (or as it's referred to by folder name, "Keeper/3/").
It's been on the back burner for a long time since I'm not very active in that fandom anymore, but the next unposted chapter is actually fully written and I'm hoping maybe I can finish up the rest of the fic by 2025 if I find time/energy for it (if only to make good on the joke in the last chapter's author's notes.)

CURRENT <Anonymous User> [CNGI] RIGHT NOW responded to memo on public anonymous board REFUGE UPON THREE JEWELS
CNGI: Transcendental Inversion! Transcendental Inversion! CHR: You can keep saying that as many times as you want, it won't make it any less incorrect. CNGI: It's a natural consequence of the classpect system. CNGI: I've already given you empirical evidence. It's not my fault you choose to ignore it. CHR: Empirical? The evidence for inversion theory is anecdotal at best. Your claims vis-a-vis specifiedNihlism's corruption study show an astonishing lack of knowledge of what the void aspect actually involves, and even that only applies to a single aspect pair. CHR: At best, you've argued that light players broadly tend to have some metaphorical "fall into darkness" at some point in their arcs, which is hardly the same thing as universal proof of inversion, let alone title transcension. FGS: Even if inversion was real, there's no evidence for any kind of 'spacetime-transcendent state of omnipotence' being possible upon god-tiering. If anything, god-tiers tend to be more strongly locked into their original titles after finishing their maturity arcs. CHR: Exactly! I' m glad there's at least someone in this group that knows what they're talking about. CNGI: I don't know why I even try to explain these things to any of you.
Some analysis of the overlap between Homestuck chumhandles/trolltags and Rain World iterator names (and pseudonyms)
because what else do you do when you're bored and have Imminent Tasks to do?
To start with, though, some analysis of each individual category to formalize the patterns and "rules" of both naming types!
Chumhandles actually follow a pretty consistent set of rules other than the session-specific ATGC initial conventions! In particular:
It must be either two words exactly, or in the rare edge case of a session leader, one word split between a prefix and a noun (ectoBiologist, carcinoGeneticist). One is too few; three is right out.
No chumhandle is less than four syllables, or more than eight, although one-syllable words are allowed in either half (e.g. twinArmageddons, arachnidsGrip). The longest individual words seem to cap out at 5 syllables (terminally, auxiliatrix).
The most common format is adjective/modifier + noun, with the noun generally being some kind of person or role. (i.e. trickster, biologist, therapist, godhead, gnostic, toreador, geneticist, auxiliatrix, calibrator, culler, gumshoe, gnostalgic, terror) but not always (armageddons, catnip, grip, umbra/ge, testicle, aquarium). The few remaining exceptions either 1) put the noun first (apocalypseArisen), 2) consist of an adverb and adjective instead (terminallyCapricious), or… whatever the fuck Dirk and Tavros had going on (timaeusTestified, adiosToreador).
There is an overall preference for "fancy" and somewhat obscure word choices.
Non-english words are uncommon but acceptable (adiosToreador).
Actually, I'm not sure they even have to be real words either; "gnostalgic" seems to be more of a pun than anything else
For the humans, there tends to be a trend of specific cultural references, generally gnostic or otherwise religious (gardenGnostic, golgothasTerror, timaeusTestified (philosophy but we'll count it), tipsyGnostalgic, arguably turntechGodhead); in trolltags, there's a trend of negative descriptors, violence, and references to the apocalypse.
Iterator names seem to be a little looser overall, probably not helped by the multiple groups of devs not always 100% agreeing re: lore. Thus we can probably say more about acceptable chumhandles than acceptable iterator names, although templates clearly do exist.
Names use whole words and form full phrases, though those phrases don't have to be nouns
Permissible nouns tend to be restricted in category - mostly inanimate natural entities (Moon, Pebble, Sun(s), Straw, Wind, etc) or abstract qualities/behaviors/concepts (Innocence, Harassment)
For natural objects, nouns tend to be simple - one syllable, two at most. More abstract qualities are allowed longer, fancier nouns.
Observed formats/templates include: "[number] [optional adj.] [object]" (Five Pebbles, Seven Red Suns), "[verb]s [preposition] [object]" (Looks to the Moon), "[adjective] [object or abstract quality]" (Unparalleled Innocence, Grey/Chasing Wind, "Erratic Pulse"; in Downpour: Pleading Intellect, Secluded Instinct, Wandering Omen, Gazing Stars), "[noun] of [object]" (Sliver of Straw; in Downpour: Epoch of Clouds). No Significant Harassment is a bit of an outlier but arguably fits group 3, with "No Significant" as the adjective/descriptor part.
The first category of names also seems to overlap the strongest with Ancient naming conventions, so the type of object could speculatively be extended to non-natural objects like bells, beads, etc (though those also seem to be mainly low-tech and "simple" objects), but there's not clear precedent for it.
Overall tone of names is neutral to positive, which makes sense given the context of iterators as the Ancients' "gift to the world" and all that
Looking at these analyses, we can find there is surprisingly small overlap between the two naming conventions! (Although it definitely exists.)
The greatest overlap is probably in iterator names that fit the third template ([adj.] [obj/quality]), most of which can comfortably pass for chumhandles so long as they're just two words and fit the four-syllable minimum. So erraticPulse [EP], unparalleledInnocence [UI], pleadingIntellect [PI] etc scan pretty well.
Chumhandles to iterator names is actually a lot harder, mostly because the range of appropriate nouns for iterator names seems to be narrower overall, and many chumhandles make more explicit cultural or material references which don't translate well into Rain World. Additionally, a lot of trolltags have very negative leaning names, while iterator names tend to be more neutral or even positive in tone. The best few I'd say are maybe Terminally Capricious, Apocalypse Arisen (doesn't strictly fit the naming template but has the vibes~ ok), Undying Umbrage and tentatively Arachnid's Grip (if arachnids can be assumed sufficiently existent for the reference to work), but none of them fully fit the vibes for a proper iterator IMO. Ironically, I've had better luck taking a page out of SBURB Glitch FAQ's book and converting soundtrack titles - Endless Climb, Upward Movement, Plays the Wind, Carefree Action, etc.
This was totally unnecessary but uh. Yeah.

oh, good point! i totally spaced on some of those NPC interactions -- lemm and millibelle I feel like are at least plausible that the knight could pick up their names from the setpieces (millibelle even has an actual sign for her 'storefront') and tiso and cloth i know are both kickstarter-backer characters so TC was probably kinda obliged to put their names onscreen (if you have certain settings on/off it also shows their backer IIRC? so obviously not all of that information is fully diegetic), but i straight up forgot that Myla doesn't tell you her name (for some reason I thought she did??? but nope!)
not sure what to do with the dream ghosts either, but I think they were also backer content, so I guess the onscreen naming makes sense doylistically, even if it's not clear how that works in-universe (vague ghost magic??)
i am still very brain go brrr about the realization that nobody ever refers to hornet by name, though. i know her getting the name 'Hornet' later in life (e.g. from Vespa) was a popular reading but I had not expected the source material name weirdness to go quite that far!
hollow knight detail #1,437 that makes my brain whirr like an overheated laptop:
the NPC names and boss titles in hollow knight display in a way that strongly implies they are being written from the knight's perspective -- NPC titles only appear once the NPC tells you their name; boss titles are usually loose descriptors or obvious titles unless you already know them; dream boss titles change in ways reflective of what the player (and by extension the knight) has learned about them; title changes seem to be very rooted in the knight's perspective ('broken vessel' -> 'lost kin' yeah but also shit like 'millibelle' -> 'millibelle the thief') -- and hornet never introduces herself by name.
#hollow knight#meta#not art#this is reminding of me of a fic i found one time that took the 'ghost knows hornet's name' thing and wrote an entire backstory scenario#of the two of them meeting when hornet was little and ghost was fresh from escaping the abyss a la the nosk den vessels#which was very very cute and also a really interesting interpretation#ghost naming hornet would be so so cute too though#she named them ghost and they named her hornet! siblings <33#ANYway in the end i am probably reading too much into something TC did not actually fully intend to be read into#but it is very fun to examine and try to justify the knight knowing these things from an in-universe perspective

LIKE on one hand hornet is such a core early boss fight and lore character this could be some kind of holdover of early development weirdness?? maybe hornet had dialogue at some point where she WAS supposed to introduce herself but it got cut, and TC just for whatever reason didn't update her boss titles when it was cut. or maybe it was an artifact of older, different sensibilities re: how the game handled boss titles -- maybe the game used to give you more out-of-universe information like that, and the more almost-diegetic knight POV titles came later and they just couldn't find a good moment for hornet to tell you her name, but they didn't want to rename her so they just gave up and left it in.
but hollow knight is a game with so much attention to detail and so many of the other boss titles have Implications about those characters and about how the knight sees the world around them, it's hard to think of another in-universe explanation for this choice that isn't 'the knight somehow already knew hornet by name'
also side note while briefly researching this post i realized i literally cannot find a single piece of dialogue where any other character refers to to Hornet by name which is. Interesting

Thread transcript (full under cut)
#1 Lizard Petter @.greenbluemagenta So I work as an architectural engineer, and lately somebody asked me why I hate Five Pebbles so much, and I had let go of so much rage I should have been a Saint. - In honor of the fact I did not bite Anyone's head off, I am dumping it on all of my followers today so buckle up guys, here we go: a List of Why Five Pebbles is an Apostatic Monstrosity That Should Never Have Been Built, A THREAD: (1/?) - FIRST OFF. Location. Dear gods, location. Major disclaimer: I do not live in the Citadel. I live in the suburbs NEAR the Citadel, because the Citadel is [2]ing expensive. I do not have a vulture in this Sacred Race. (2/?) - When most people complain about 5P's location, they're complaining about him being directly over the Citadel, boo hoo they're being Overshadowed and their nice views are gone. Personally, I give no fucks. (3?) - Overshadowing is a common trick to reduce rainfall impact on established urban areas, we do it all the time. My beef is because of the OTHER location issue. (4/?) - The original reason that 5P was built was because the iterator Looks to the Moon up in Waterfront was starting to break down. She's an old model from the 200's, so this came as a surprise to literally no one. (5/?) - So the Lunar Council commissioned an 'auxiliary unit' to help keep things running during her repair. That's all well and good. We build those all the time! (6/?) - But then someone got the brilliant idea: with all the rain from LTTM, we have just enough water in this reservoir sustain a WHOLE SECOND ITERATOR! So why not build one and move our excess population over THERE instead? We're geniuses! (7/?) - Never mind that reservoir levels plummet in summer, or that the combined output of two iterators in a single flood zone would be an ecological nightmare and force district-wide rezoning! Never mind that literally nobody wanted a new iterator in this area! What Could Possibly Go Wrong! (8/?) - On top of that, the councilfolk who wanted 5P built wanted him to be a CITY city. All new infrastructure, all new housing, all new shiny everything to support the runoff population being offloaded from Luna. (9/?) - They insisted that it would be more Cost-Effective to build a new, up-to-code structure from scratch than to keep upgrading LTTM's antiquated systems to be livable until GA, or taking the time to overhaul her. (10/?) - (Yes, even though we've done that before with other 200's style iterators! They did it with Glimmer of Stars out in Nine Lakes! But nooo, that would have been Expensive, and the city people might have had to move down here with us plebs for a while to wait.) (11/?) - The architects initially weren't even approved to do it. The coalition of Houses that wanted him had to lobby to change the zoning laws here to allow it. (12/?) - They literally had to take waterline measurements and "prove" that 5P's hypothetical water consumption would not exceed the safety margin during summer water levels before the proposition could move forward. (13/?) - In the end, they had to agree to give LTTM an extra set of low-waterline pumps to make sure she still had access if the levels got too low. Last I heard, it's planned to start in 1580, which is good as never with 5P already built. (14/?) - This is basically a disaster waiting to happen. All it takes is a few cycles of excess water consumption at the wrong time of year, and the reservoir is good as drained. Even a few cycles without water is enough to induce serious malfunctions (15/?) - including slag buildup, overheating, and structural instability. But it's not likely enough to happen for the council to care, and obviously that's all that matters to these bastards. (16/?)

I have to pay a water bill.
It rains so hard every night my balcony has a hands-breadth of standing water when the shields unroll in the morning.

The water from iterators is actually clean and sterile by default, but they put chemicals in it during cloud seeding to make it undrinkable for the masses. Rating: not cute
The green lizard is not play-fighting (note the crest luminosity and repeated threat poses) and is most likely acting on territorial urges toward the red lizard. The red is remarkably good-tempered in tolerating it here, but it is probably only ignoring the green because it does not pose a significant threat. If the red lizard at any point decided it was done screwing around and decided to retaliate, that green would be in serious danger.
These are not animals that should be kept together in close proximity. Greens are especially territorial and will readily pick fights with lizards multiple times their size, and reds are venomous and incredibly deadly when motivated.
💠 boomcyan Follow OP greens are literally immune to red lizard venom. shes fine
👤 is-the-lizard-video-cute-deactivated1534795 That doesn't change the fact that the red lizard could change its mind about tolerating the green at kill it at any point in this interaction. This is not safe or appropriate animal interaction, and I assure you a red lizard can, in fact, decide to snap down on something in its jaws and not let go much faster than any person can intervene. (Feel free to ask me how I know! Hint: it's also why I have a metal foot now.)
💠 boomcyan Follow the red literally cant get it though. greens are immune
🟠 orange-nesting-sphere Follow I…. being immune to venom doesn't make you immune to being bitten? What kind of logic is this?
💠 boomcyan Follow theyre immune though
🟠 orange-nesting-sphere Follow To the venom. Not to having their necks snapped.
💠 boomcyan Follow theyre immune. reds literally cant kills greens its scientific fact
🟠 orange-nesting-sphere Follow That's not how immunity works.
💠 boomcyan Follow it literally is. look it up reds cant kill green lizards
🟠 orange-nesting-sphere Follow It literally does not. Here is an article debunking that particular myth, and a few more if you'd like further information about where this misconception came from.
Or if you'd like more direct evidence, here's a video (animal death warning) of a red lizard killing a feral green in the wild.
💠 boomcyan Follow that video is fake
🟠 orange-nesting-sphere Follow It's really not. I don't like having to link to videos of actual animals being hurt, but I really don't know how else to get through to you that Reds Can, In Fact, Kill Greens.
💠 boomcyan Follow they cant though. greens are immune
🟠 orange-nesting-sphere Follow THEY ARE IMMUNE TO VENOM, NOT TEETH

okay but as a society is it insane that we tolerate how scavs are treated. those guys are intelligent. they are literally capable of wielding spears and making simple tools and we are using them as funny little test subjects and destroying their natural habitats and keeping them as pets.

articulated-centi replied: op is literally an ecolo-ativist who thinks we should dismantle iterators in favor of living humble surface lives like the ancients. stop recirculating their takes
no, i am an ecolo-restorativist. i believe we should repair our environment and treat it well and justly, and that iterators are an aspect of that damage that we as a society must reckon with. i do believe that in an ideal world all iterators would be dismantled to properly restore the ecosystems to their natural equilibrium, but i also understand that is unrealistic for our current state of things, and that many of our ecosystems have already begun their own adaptations to their modified climates and would be potentially damaged worse by a poorly planned reversal than by continuing to support the stability of the environments that currently exist.
more importantly, how does this detract from my point that our treatment of scavs is unsconsciable in light of their functional near-sapience? how do my political views on iterators make the horrific conditions we keep these creatures in any less real?
stop looking for excuses not to listen. if you don't want to hear what i have to say, then block me and move on.

anyway i still stand by my words. our treatment of scavengers is unacceptable and i will not be silent about it.

boosting this from my buddy who runs @/is-the-sifter-video-cute ! they talk a lot about animal welfare and improving conditions for intelligent species that have growing habituated to urban environments, so if you like my posts, go follow them as well!

Other marketgoers wade from waist-deep waters up the steps of the Golden Hall. The image is dated 1431.]

[Image: a family huddles on the roof of their house, protected by a haphazard structure of rebar and tarps, in the flooded ground-level city of Three Corners Meet, thirty miles from the then-recently constructed iterator Chasing Wind. Water partly submerges the windows of the building's first floor. The image is dated 1424.]
[Image: graffiti on the side of an overpass bridge near Three Corners Meet, reading 'this bridge was not built / for a river'. The waterline just reaches the underside of the bridge. Branch debris and the loose wheel of a cart float by below. The image is dated 1503.]

[Image: Aftermath of the Skeins Valley flood of 1499. Mangled vehicles from a nearby parking lot have been piled together lengthwise like river stones. A lone figure stands near the top of the pile, only barely above water, poking at debris with a long stick. Two gray overseers observe from another nearby debris pile. Behind them, floodwaters continue all the way to the far side of the valley.]
iterator-induced flooding, before and after the great equalizer.
#my House used to live in three corners #one of our elders would tell my creche about how the floods used to force meetings up to the fourth floor of our pillar and everyone would simply carry on as normal until the waters receded #because they couldn't afford to leave their current property until the lease from the city reached the end of term #that building doesn't exist anymore #it was demolished after the floods finally ruined the foundation beyond repair #all these places will never exist again and our society's obsession with these stupid humidity machines is to blame
