On this day: June 22nd, 1798 - United Irishmen Rebellion: Execution of John Kelly, also known as 'Kelly of Killanne'
Tumblr media
Photo: The grave of Captain John Kelly, ‘Kelly of Killanne,’ in Saint Anne’s Churchyard, Killanne, Co Wexford
John Kelly lived in Killanne in the parish of Rathnure and was a leader who fought in the United Irishmen Rebellion of 1798.
While Kelly was obviously well-known to rebels and loyalists alike during the short duration of the Wexford rising, almost nothing is known of him outside this time. He was one of the leaders of the rebel victory at the Battle o…f Three Rocks which led to the capture of Wexford town but was later seriously wounded while leading a rebel column at the Battle of New Ross.
Robert Gogan describes how Kelly was under orders from the Wexford commander Bagenal Harvey to attack the British outposts around New Ross but on no account to attack the town itself.
The rebels outnumbered the British forces and so Harvey sent a messenger to give them an opportunity to surrender. The messenger was shot while carrying a white flag. This angered the rebels who began the attack without receiving the official order from Harvey.
Kelly’s column of 800 men attacked and broke through Ross’ “Three Bullet Gate” and proceeded into the town itself. After initial success, they were eventually beaten back by British troops and Kelly was wounded in the leg. He was moved to Wexford to recuperate but after the fall of Wexford on 21 June was dragged from his bed, tried and sentenced to death. He was hanged on 22 June 1798 along with seven other rebel leaders on Wexford bridge, after which his body was decapitated, the trunk thrown into the River Slaney and the head kicked through the streets before being set on display on a spike.

The French Have Loved Wine For Millennia, New Finds Show
Tumblr media
Everyone knows France is famous for its wine. The country’s rise to prominence as a wine-producer in the 1100s has been well-documented, but what is less clear is how wine got to France. Recently, multiple Etruscan amphora and a limestone pressing platform (above) were unearthed in a merchant’s quarters at the ancient coastal port site of Lattara in southern France. They are now the earliest archaeological evidence of wine-making in France, dating to between 525 and 475 BCE.
When trace remains from inside three amphorae were tested, all contained tartaric acid / tartrate – the biomarker or fingerprint compound for the Eurasian grape and wine in the Middle East and Mediterranean, as well as compounds deriving from pine tree resin. When the limestone pressing platform was tested it also came back positive for tartaric acid. Nearby were found thousands of domesticated grape seeds, grape flower stalks, and grape skins.
When you add it all up, the new finds are pretty convincing evidence that viniculture was happening in France during pre-Roman times, thanks to southern France’s contact with Etruscans.

On this day: June 11th, 1837 - The Broad Street Riot: Fueled by ethnic tensions between Yankees and Irish
Tumblr media
Image: Volunteer fire brigades like this one required a lot of manpower to pull the engine through the streets, handle hoses and bucket brigades, and tear down burning walls. The men in Boston were recruited among Protestant apprentices, labourers, and street toughs and idolised in their community.
Boston was a huge seaport, and eventually a melting pot. Irish immigration began in the late 1700s. Many Irish immigrated to Boston during The Great Hunger that occurred between 1845 and 1852 in Ireland. There was a lot of friction between English and Irish Americans, which smoldered in Boston for more than 100 years. This friction erupted quickly into what was known as the Great Broad Street Riot of 1837. The following is quoted from the 1838 Boston Almanac about the event:
On 11th June 1837, a Great Riot occurred in Broad Street. It commenced between an engine company returning from a fire, and an Irish funeral procession. It has not been satisfactorily ascertained which party were the aggressors. The tumult increased to such a degree, that nearly a thousand persons, at one time, were supposed to be engaged in a brawl, the most desperate that ever occurred in this city.
Several houses were broken into, furniture shattered inside, and cast into the street. Beds were ripped open and their contents given to the winds. Sticks, stones, bricks, and all manner of missiles, were discharged by the combatants at each other, with the utmost ferocity and yet, strange to tell, no one was killed in the affray. The military was called out, and in a strong body marched to the scene of action, and in a short time the rioters were dispensed or captured. Crowds were sent off to the Police Court; and at length, after the proper authorities had sifted the whole affair, it resulted in the sending of John Whaley for four months, and John Welsh and Barney Fanning each two months, at hard labour, in the House of Correction.
On 15th June 1837, seventeen persons, concerned in the Broad Street Riot, were ordered to recognise the sum of $300, and to appear at the next term of the Municipal Court. One American was held to bail, Mark Adams, a truck man, against whom the witnesses testified they saw him aiding in the sacking of the houses.
On 18th June 1837, the city was very quiet since last Monday morning. A military force was stationed at Faneuil Hall, to protect the armories, etc., and to act in case any disturbance should take place. Many Irishmen flock in from Lowell and other places. Their motives unknown. As the engines were returning from a fire in South Boston, some of the companies were assailed by hissing, hooting, etc. Many attempts were made during the day to kick up a row.
The Baltimore Sun quickly lambasted the enlightened ruling class of Boston for their hypocrisy—professing compassion for immigrants while underlying intolerance and ignorance led to outright civil unrest in this case.
The riot was used as the basis of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones song “Riot on Broad Street”.

Since summer is right around the corner ill finally have the time to start working out, heres my plan. planning on losing all the excess weight ive gained over the year and toning my ass and thighs.
Being overweight is a serious issue in todays society, and although there are extreme standars set for both men and women, that not an excuse to let yourself go, by doing so you hurt not just your self but, others around yourself as well. theres a lot of hate out there for obese peoples, but making fun of them doesnt encourage them to better themselves, the best thing is to create a positive environment and teach people the proper way to do things.
Everyone have a nice summer!

and such is the evil of the capitalist system of class opreession
I really worry about how many people in their 20s are just constantly tired all the time. It is absolutely not healthy for people to be worked so hard that every single night the second they come home they are so physically shattered they only want to sleep.

Hubble Catches a Spiral Galaxy in Disguise
Resembling a wizard’s staff set aglow, NGC 1032 cleaves the quiet darkness of space in two in this image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope.
NGC 1032 is located about a hundred million light-years away in the constellation Cetus (the Sea Monster). Although beautiful, this image perhaps does not do justice to the galaxy’s true aesthetic appeal: NGC 1032 is actually a spectacular spiral galaxy, but from Earth, the galaxy’s vast disk of gas, dust and stars is seen nearly edge-on.
A handful of other galaxies can be seen lurking in the background, scattered around the narrow strip of NGC 1032. Many are oriented face-on or at tilted angles, showing off their glamorous spiral arms and bright cores. Such orientations provide a wealth of detail about the arms and their nuclei, but fully understanding a galaxy’s three-dimensional structure also requires an edge-on view. This gives astronomers an overall idea of how stars are distributed throughout the galaxy and allows them to measure the “height” of the disk and the bright star-studded core.
