Magni nestled back onto Tobias’s chest. He chuckled when Magni mentioned the wine, by far the most popular story on the ship, and his chest pressed against Magni’s face. Tobias couldn’t help but trace a finger along Magni’s braid, always fascinated by the intricate weaving of hair. How Magni found the time to do it he had no idea. Tobias chuckled again as Magni tried to recall the story proper. “Not quite. You should remember him, his story is quite fitting.” He bent his neck so his lips were in Magni’s ear. “He has prophetic dreams,” he smiled against Magni’s ear, wondering what sort of dreams Magni had when he was resting like this. Magni seemed to want to be closer and closer to Tobias, to the point he was pressing his whole body against Tobias’ chest. Tobias spoke in a strained voice, “He saves people from famine, and uh, has to forgive his brothers…” Finally Magni shifted his weight and Tobias took a deep breath. He smiled, “no, no, it’s fine,” he lied. “I like having you close,” that part was true. “It reminds me of a simpler time…”
.
“ It does? “ Simpler time. Magni wished they could go back in time before Tobias left. Could he have done anything that would have made him stay? Would things have gone differently if he had never left? Probably not. He knew that back then, Tobias only thought of him as a foolish young man. How would he have been able to do anything to stop him from leaving? “ You know, things could have remained simple if you would have stayed. “ Magni captured his lower lip between his teeth as if that would have been enough to take his words back. Magni didn’t hesitate to straddle Tobias’ hips before he ran his fingers through his unruly hair. “ I’m sorry, you came back. That’s all that matters. Besides, I don’t think we would be able to do this if we would go back in time to the simpler times. “ As soon as he finished his sentence, Magni ran his fingers down his jawline, pausing underneath Tobias’ chin to raise his head before he leaned back to kiss him. This was far from being their first kiss, but somehow it was just as thrilling to Magni. Would he ever grow tired of kissing him?

“Prince Magni? In your dreams, maybe.” Alistair snorted with laughter at the mere thought of his violent friend being royalty. “Shit, can you imagine how much money you’d have if you were a prince? You’d be able to buy us a fleet of ships. One each. All the men and women would be falling at your feet.” Fuck it. He let himself sink backwards, arms folded loosely over his chest as he stared upward at the sky. “Think I’d rather be a pirate than a prince. Not that I actually had any choice, anyway.”
.
“ Hey! I could be a prince. “ Magni tried to argue, but he couldn’t stop himself from laughing along with Alistair, even when he nudged him with his leg as if to stop him from laughing. He was laughing because he was right. Magni was the last person on the Cursed Serpent who could be royalty. Sometimes it seemed as if he had been raised by wolves rather than a bunch of ruthless pirates. How could someone like him be a prince? Magni shook his head at his foolishness before he paused for a moment at Alistair's admission. “ Would you? I guess I would want to be a pirate rather than a prince as well. While we would have more money than we could ever spend if we were princes, we wouldn’t have the same freedom. Imagine not being able to do whatever you desire whenever you want? “

&&.jax-harper·:
“I know,” Jax said honestly, both to Magni’s offer of help and the notion that the crew wasn’t as cruel as the mer’s colony laws. They were pirates - fierce and brave and cruel in their own ways - but in this matter, Jax felt like they were the bigger people. Sucking in a breath and letting it out slowly, he tried to calm his beating heart. “I’ll just be glad when we’re rid of Arroyo. I know Lyra is concerned about the situation with her family. I don’t really understand what it’s like to have blood relatives you care about, but if she wants to find a way to check on them quickly without getting herself killed, then I’ll do it. I just want to get out of there as soon as possible. If they see her and make good on the law and even try to kill her…I don’t know what I’ll do.”
.
Magni could almost feel his heart stop when Jax mentioned finding a way for Lyra to see her family. “ Are you sure that’s a good idea? “ He could understand that she wanted to see her family. Magni knew he would do anything to see his family again, even if only for one moment, but this was different. If she would get caught, they would surely kill her, and what would happen to the crew if they would get too close to the colony? “ I say that we should let Arroyo go and find his way back home, without us helping him or having to go anywhere near it. Letting her get a glimpse of her family that sentenced her to death isn’t worth risking her life and ours. “

“Of course,” she replied simply. “If I didn’t I would just tell Kalix to piss off. He’s got thick skin, he can handle a bit of rejection. Might be good for his ego actually,” she said though she knew Kalix didn’t really have an ego when it came to sex. Though perhaps that was because she knew better than anyone how long it had been since he’d properly been with someone. So Kalix had no ego and Athena had no experience. What a pair they would make. At Magni’s question Athena began to shrink, a different kind of deflation than what she had experienced when talking about Kalix. “There is a spell that lets you become shadow… and a spell that can remove poison from food and drink.” She drew her knees up to her chest, “but there are also spells meant to hurt people… like the one Charles taught me…” She couldn’t bring herself to look at Magni.
.
The symbols, no the magic, felt almost forbidden to Magni’s eyes as if he was the last person who should be allowed to see them, as if he wasn’t worthy of seeing them. His fingers trailed over them, they felt unreal, like they were nothing more than just some scribbles on a paper, but Magni knew better. He had seen what sorcerers were capable of doing with them, and he had seen what Athena had done to Charles. Magni inhaled sharply as he broke his gaze away from the symbols and closed the book with one quick movement. “ I still can’t believe you let him teach you magic, especially magic that hurts people, but I am glad you used it when you did. I’m not sure if any of us would still be alive if it weren’t for you. “ He admitted reluctantly, as he handed over the book to her. Magni knew she was a pirate, which meant that her life was full of violence, just as much as his own was, but he still had hoped she would never have to kill another man. “ Have you tried the rest of the spells? “

Tobias wasn’t sure exactly when Magni fell asleep, but the slow heavy breath on his neck gave it away. That and the way Magni put his entire weight onto Tobias’ side. He didn’t mind. Years ago, before either of them had touched each other, this would happen. Magni would be interested in what Tobias was reading, lose interest, and subsequently fall asleep. Sometimes he’d just fall asleep next to Tobias, sometimes on top of him. It was hard not to feel like Tobias had been transported back to the past, before he left the ship. Magni stirred and he began to speak in a sleepy voice. Tobias raised a brow, “of course you were listening.” He shut his bible. “So you can tell me all about Joseph and his coat?” He grinned, looking at Magni expectantly.
.
Magni rubbed the sleep from his eyes, as the corners of his lips curled up into a lazy smile. " Joseph and his coat? " Humming to himself, Magni lay his head back on Tobias' chest, shutting his eyes again, soaking in the warmth of his embrace. " He's not the man who turned water into wine, so I'm sure he was a boring chap. " This wasn’t anything new. Before Tobias left, listening to him read from the bible had been Magni’s favourite thing in the whole world. Sure, he had never cared much for the messages of its stories as much as Tobias did, instead, it had always been a moment of peace for him, away from the chaos and the violence, where Magni could be himself and forget that anything else existed, even if it was only for one fleeting moment. “ Isn’t he the one who fought a lion or something? “ Magni said absentmindedly, as he burrowed himself into his warmth, clinging onto him for dear life without realizing that he was laying his whole weight on his friend. “ Wait... I’m not hurting you, am I? “ He finally asked him, shifting his weight, so he was resting on his elbow instead of on Tobias.

The gentle voice of Tobias rouses Magni up from his heavy slumber, shedding the remaining glimpses of his dream. His voice echoed around them, and for one blissful second, Magni didn't realise where they were. The one thing he knew was that he was safe in Tobias' arms. Nothing else mattered. Magni groaned quietly curling his fingers in Tobias' shirt before he slowly and reluctantly blinked his eyes open. " Oh no. " Magni whispered to himself, panic building up within his chest when it dawned on him that he had fallen asleep while listening to Tobias read. " I'm so sorry, Tobi. I was listening, I promise. " Magni raised his head to look at him, with his eyes wide open, almost pleading. " You know how much I love listening to you read from your book. “

&&.shiftingseas·:
they had set sail mere hours ago, with the high noon sun painting metal bits of the ship bright like diamonds. Bloom found themselves hung upside-down from the interlocking mesh that scaled the main mast, weaving together a complicated knot to salvage a broken rope.finishing their task, keen eyes swiveled away from the rigging and down towards the deck. with calves and feet tangled up purposefully in the net to stop them from falling, they reached for the deck of the ship, planning to use their grip on the wood to pull themselves free. they immediately discovered that they had miscalculated, their fingers only had the ability to reach inches above floor, leaving them unable to pull themselves free. still hanging there, blood rushing to their head, they scowled and folded their arms petulantly. they looked remarkably like a grumpy bat. what a truly embarrassing mistake to make mere weeks into a new job. humbling themselves, they looked around for another crew member to give them a hand. “hey, uh,” they swallowed their pride once more, “mind lending a hand?”
.
After rushing around the ship, making sure that everything was going smoothly, Magni finally stopped for a moment. He was leaning over the railing, embracing the familiar ocean breeze that left a salty taste on his lips. As much as he enjoyed staying on dry land, he never felt at home unless he was surrounded by the ocean. “ Mind lending a hand? “ Magni glanced over his shoulder, grinning when he noticed Bloom. “ I thought you were supposed to be an experienced rigger? “ He asked them, with a teasing glint in his eyes. Magni knew how easy it was to miscalculate and get stuck in the same situation as they were, so he didn’t judge them, but that wouldn’t stop him from teasing them. “ Alright, alright, what do you need me to do? “ He finally asked them, unable to stop himself from grinning.

Billie observed her friend through narrowed eyes, lips pressing together in a thin line. Of all the people to cause problems on the ship Tobias had been bottom of the list, but could Magni be harbouring some less than innocent feelings? It was none of her business, of course. Except they were her friends, and she didn’t want messy affairs damaging the crew or upsetting people she cared about. “Ah, I don’t care much about their usefullness. We got by well enough before all the magic, hm? You and I especially, I’m sure I’ve never been part of another vrew with supernaturals on board and I survived.” As evidenced by Charles, sometimes it was more trouble than it was worth. Billie kicked off from her place lounged against a tree, “come on, I’ll take you back to the ship. They’re probably wondering where we got to.”
.
Magni inhaled deeply, nodding to himself. “ You’re right. We are the greatest pirate crew that has ever sailed the seven seas, with or without magic. I’m sure we will be fine. “ He said with a mirthless chuckle as he joined her as they made their way towards the ship. She was right, they’ve both been fine without magic so far, but they’ve never dealt with anything resembling the journey they were on now. Maybe in the past, they've never needed magic, but now? Now he wasn't sure they would get by without it.

Magni didn’t have a mirror or anything else to see the change of his appearance, but he could feel it. It’s been a while since he let himself change into someone else. Usually, Magni tried to avoid it, but as much as he despised the change, it was a relief to be able to be someone else and to disappear for a moment. After the change, he opened his eyes and studied his hands. They were so different from his own. His fingers were long, and his skin no longer showed any sign of hard labor. Where had he seen this man before? Was it in Westburgh? Or maybe even Luna Island? Magni was startled from his thoughts when he heard someone approaching him, instantly changing back into himself. His freshly washed hair hung loosely over his shoulder, no longer in a braid. “ Were you trying to sneak up on me? “ Magni almost hissed at them before sighing deeply. “ Sorry, I didn’t mean it like that. Are you okay? “

“Magni,” Maeve hissed, her eyebrows scrunching together. “Of all the things to get soft and mushy over, this isn’t it.” It wasn’t clear when they’d hit land again, and Maeve wasn’t about to pass up the chance to have a hot meal. She spun her knife around in her hand, squinting into the brush. Still not able to make out exactly what the animal was, all she could see was the shadow. “If you don’t want to kill it, I will.”
Magni was too soft, wasn’t he? His grip on the knife tightened as he took a hesitant step towards the bush. Magni could kill another man without blinking an eye, so he had to be able to hunt an innocent animal. “ I can do it, I’m sure I can, but I’m telling you, if it looks at me with their adorable eyes, then I’m not sure if I can do it. “ He admitted. “ Hunting an animal and killing a person are two completely different things, Maeve. Maybe I will let you handle the hunting, and I will take care of the killing for you. “

Magni had to be the only one on the ship who Alistair would let get away with calling him anything along the lines of darling. Only one other person had nicknamed him as such, and he didn’t talk about them, not as openly as Magni seemed to be about to share his past. “No, darling, I don’t believe you’ve ever told the story in great detail.” He leaned back a little too, though not quite as far back as his friend had, instead just leaning back with his hands sinking into the sand, as well. He only hoped that Magni didn’t expect any tales of Alistair’s past in return, because it wasn’t exciting; just plain depressing.
.
Magni stayed silent for a long moment. He never shared his past with anyone. Not even his oldest friends knew how his life had been before Magni joined the Serpent. They only knew whatever tale he created each time they asked him about his past. “ I might not look like it, but I come from a line of filthy rich monarchs. Before I became a pirate, I was a prince. “ His grin was nearly dripping with sarcasm. “ When the kingdom collapsed, I had to run away. I eventually joined a pirate ship to get away from the chaos, so here I am. “ Was his story believable? Not at all, but it sounded better than the true story of how he ended up on the Cursed Serpent.

The question made her pause, the words not quite forming, but her mouth was open as if she were about to say something. She closed her mouth, shrugging and shaking her head. “Don’t know, I just…don’t see someone taking an interest in me.” She admitted, her tone hesitant as she spoke. “Worried someone is going to see me as…” The sentence trailed off, Rav shaking her head once more. “Nevermind. It’s not important.” She attempted a smile, but it was a pretty weak attempt. She shifted her weight, offering a shrug in response to his question. “Thought I had that once. It didn’t work out. Seems…unrealistic now.” A pause. “But what about you? Secretly a romantic?”
.
His brows furrowed together when she tried to answer his question. Oh, how he wished he could make her understand that people would be interested in her and there was nothing wrong with people seeing her as... As what? With a heavy sigh, Magni led Rav towards the storeroom where he kept his secret stash of rum. “ Yeah, falling in love and being with someone does seem unrealistic. Doesn’t it? “ Magni agreed as he snatched up his half-finished bottle of rum and handed it over to her before chuckling when she asked him if he was a romantic. “ Hardly. “ He told her, shaking his head. “ Us pirates might be lucky enough to experience more adventures than anyone can ever dream of, but romance? I don’t think so. “

Athena let out a heavy sigh. He question felt a tad unfair, seeing as Magni had feelings for Tobias long before she was ever on the ship. Still– she wondered if Kalix thought she’d ask Magni to make the arrangement or if Kalix just assumed Magni liked to play matchmaker. Perhaps she’d ask him sometime… She opened her mouth to explain the arrangement when Magni continued to speak, animated and clearly pleased. Athena laughed, a bit awkward. “Yes, we only kissed. I think uh… we might have done more…” she was finding it harder and harder to look directly at Magni. “But I was still injured and Kalix said we should wait. But we agreed to… finish sometime.” In a moment of weakness she covered her face, her palms pressed against her hot cheeks. Magni’s question made her peek between her fingers. The blood that had rushed to her cheeks dissipated as she now felt sick. “It’s magic. I took some spells from Charles’ grimoire before…” She didn’t have to say it. “I’m not sure what to do with them anymore.”
.
Magni watched as Athena seemed to grow shyer with each word she said while she recounted what had happened between her and Kalix. A smile made its way on his lips when Athena began to hide her face with the palm of her hands, most likely trying to hide the flush that coloured her cheeks. He was happy for her. If anyone deserved to feel desired, it was her. " And do you want to finish whatever was about to happen between you? " He asked Athena, but when she told him what the strange symbols were, he felt his heart drop to his stomach. Magic? Charles' magic? Magni swallowed down dryly as he studied them, even though he would never be able to understand them, no matter how much he would try. " What can you do with them? "

&&.father-tobias·:
Magni deepened the kiss and Tobias couldn’t help but oblige to his needs, wanting nothing more than to please Magni. As much as Tobias was motivated by his own lust, his inability to curve his desires, seeing Magni so vulnerable changed things. Magni had opened himself up time and time again, with Tobias simply walking in and out with little care. It hurt him, sure, but it hurt Magni more. Right now, alone in the woods, Tobias knew he could cater to Magni. Their lips parted though Tobias could still feel Magni’s breath and the taste of him lingered. Once again, Magni’s words made Tobias shiver. “It can’t just be me…” he said in disbelief.
Though Magni was smiling Tobias needed him to know he meant no harm in the comment. He brushed back a few strands of blond hair that had come loose during all the activity. “You are beautiful– blindingly so… The whore part was just me getting carried away. You…” You’ve undone me as well, he wanted to say but he knew once those words left his lips they could never be taken back. Even when trying so desperately to say in the moment his future nagged him. His long time dream of a family and a simple life away from the violence that tore his life apart. How Magni fit into that future Tobias did not know.
Despite Magni’s quiet voice the power behind just a single word stopped Tobias’ thoughts completely. He looked at his friend, seeing how much he wanted to just say like this. Tobias wanted the same thing. He cradled Magni’s head and pressed it against his bare chest, his fingers deep in Magni’s hair. Tobias kissed the top of his head his free hand running along Magni’s back making sure he wasn’t hurt in any place. There was nothing he could say. Not without ruining this moment. Tobias kissed Magni’s head again. And again. And again.
.
Magni knew their time together was limited. Soon the bubble they were in would burst, and they would have to accept their fate. They will never be together. They might share these sweet and lustful moments, but Tobias will never be his, and the sooner Magni would accept it, the better. Even if he knew the truth, he still refused to acknowledge it. Instead, Magni chose to enjoy their burrowed time together. His eyes fluttered shut as he rested his head on Tobias’ chest, listening to his heart beating. In the silence of the forest, Magni could almost imagine their life together. They would sail with the Cursed Serpent until his bones would ache and until he would be too tired to fight, and only then would they settle somewhere on land. Tobias could have his own church, and Magni would be content with doing nothing but listen to him preach and make sure he's happy.
Magni squeezed his eyes shut, unable to contain his chuckle when Tobias pampered him with kisses. “ Stop. “ He said again, but this time around, there was no real edge in his voice. Of course, he didn’t want him to stop. He never wanted this to end. Eventually, Magni pushed himself away from Tobias so he could look him in the eyes. “ Sure, other men have been good, but this- “ Magni put his hand on Tobias’ chest. He couldn’t even finish his sentence. How was he supposed to describe what this meant to him, and what if his confession would be the thing that would send Tobias running? What if he would push him too far and make him leave the crew?
Again, Magni laid his head on Tobias' chest to rest. "Blindingly beautiful?" Magni said mostly to himself, with a small smile, burying his face in Tobias’ chest, as if he had to hide his smile from Tobias. He had never known it was possible to be this happy. He relished in it, even if he knew it would only last for a moment. “ If we could, I would stay here all night, but while I don’t think the crew cares if we disappear for a little while, I’m sure they will start missing us if we're missing the whole night. “

“Ah, yes. An action I deeply regret.” But they both knew that was furthest from the truth. She remained standing, staring down at Magni, a playful smirk of her own crossing her features. “Hardly. You have any idea how boring it is on a merchant ship? Ugh.” She scoffed, moving to take a seat next to her friend, scowling at the memory. “At least life on land was interesting sometimes. Met all kinds of crazy characters. Like this one guy, kind of a magnet for trouble…what was his name again?” She gave Magni a playful shove. “This the craziest thing that’s happened to you?”
.
No, Magni couldn’t even imagine how boring it must be to sail with a merchant ship, even though the idea of a peaceful sailing, without all of this violence sounded like a dream to him. “ I have no idea what you mean. “ Magni tried to argue, but he couldn’t stop himself from laughing because she was right. He was a magnet for trouble. Trouble seemed to follow him around like a dark cloud. With a quiet sigh, Magni placed the hat over his face once again when she asked him what the craziest thing that has ever happened to him was. With his eyes closed, he thought of the events of the past months. This journey had to be the wildest one he had ever experienced. “ If we won’t count the serpent, the werewolves, and pretty much everything that happened on Luna Island, then I would have to say when I was able to convince a prison guard to let me out of my cell moments before my execution. “ Of course, he tricked him by changing into his fellow prison guard, but she didn’t need to know that. “ What about you? What's the wildest thing that has ever happened to you? “

Billie watched Magni, and his response to her mentioning of the priest. It was entirely Maeve’s fault for putting the idea in her head, but in general she considered romances among crews to be risky, and she couldn’t imagine this one in particular would be smooth sailing, were it to exist. But unless one of them chose to confide in her, she wouldn’t stick her nose in. “Tobias seemed primarily concerned about the danger Athena presented as a sorcerer, but after a little talking it became clear it was because she specifically seemed to have a personal issue with him- over religion, no doubt- so that worried him.” She folded her arms across her chest, watching him closely. Magni had never been an easy read, but Billie did know him well. “Quite. It seems almonst irrelivant considering the common goal we’re all working towards.”
,
So Tobias was scared of magic? Was he only frightened of Athena and what she could do with her magic, or would he be afraid of him as well? Magni’s gaze drew distant, his worry of not only Tobias’ reaction, but Billie’s and the whole crew’s, running through his mind before he finally put on his usual smile, acting as if nothing had bothered him, but his smile didn’t quite reach his eyes. “ Exactly, besides, they’re useful. We should be glad to have someone with us who can do magic during this journey and rejoice at everything they may do to help us get ahead of our competition. “ Magni felt sick to his stomach for even thinking about the sorcerers and anyone who might not be human in that way. Useful. It was what people, especially captains, thought of him. His ability was useful to get what they wanted. It didn't matter if he had to sacrifice himself or his morals to help them get it. “ I mean if they want to use their magic to help us, of course. “
