A special eye protein is helping birds to “see” Earth’s magnetic field! If that’s not cool, I don’t know what is.

The ability to see Earth’s magnetic field, known as magnetoreception, relies on the presence of specifically the blue wavelength of light. The complex process involves “radical” intermediate molecules which are sensitive to Earth’s magnetic field. The Earth’s magnetic field, as it relates to the direction the bird is facing, could alter the intermediate radical molecules differently, giving the bird a sense for where it is facing in relation to the Earth’s magnetic field.

While the exact way birds visualize Earth’s magnetic field is part of further investigation, scientists believe the Cry4 protein acts as sort of a filter over the bird’s vision. This filter would allow birds to see a sort of compass of the Earth and direct their migratory flights accordingly.

Miss Wondersmith

A secret invitation to an exploration of beauty and mystery

This little gift was picked up by myself at a local greenhouse, just sitting, glinting in the beautiful diffused light(I’ve found photogrpahin gmy jewelry in there is likt working in a giant light box, and I highly suggest it to any practicing photographer!!!). Without further adue, I picked up this little ‘geode’, unsure of what it was, and then read the above description.

     “This is no ordinary rock, crack it open to find your treasure”, and I did. Well, we did- I waited until my beloved came home, and took the rock with me on a little adventure as I finished photographing my old jewelry, and then when we stood in the kitchen together, in the dark, illuminated by our overhead light, we took a paint can opener and carefully opened our surprise.

     I thought it might be a fun child’s toy, some kind of egg with a dinosaur or toy soldier in it, but what we found, inside the gilded encompasment of this treasure was a scroll, with an invitation. Tucked in among thousands of small glittering crystals, this small little slip of paper was wound in a huge plot of excitement. A dream unfolding-

     A chance to celebrate the gifts of thee earth it said, you may have to climb high heights, and go to deep depths, wear earth tones clothes, and bring a head lamp, be ready to try new foods- this, is not for the faint of heart. Signed, sincerely, with Magic, The Wondersmith. This woman weaves as a jeweler with fine metals, adventure from wonder and awe... and she does~ 

     We put in our included password her invitation page, and are waiting on our next clue. Adventure arrives in the most mysterious and beautiful ways...

    We live to love it, and spread it among the world like laughter and good medicine.
