Church of Night: Children born of a High Priest, whether they’re legitimate or not, can lay claim to that title.
Feast of Feasts:
Feast of Feasts is one of the Church of Night’s holiest holidays, it honours the sacrifice of Freya who killed herself so that her coven could eat her body and wouldn’t starve. Freya was part of the fourteen witches who formed the earliest incarnation of the Church of Night. The fourteen women were chased out of the township of Greendale into the hills and the forest. But the men of Greendale had hunted all the animals so there was nothing to eat. The witches would have starved if Freya, the youngest and strongest witch, hadn’t killed herself and offered her body as food.
The Feast of Feasts is an annual demonstration of devotion to the Dark Lord. Fourteen families from the coven are selected to participate in a lottery, and those chosen by the Council to partake in it are informed by a bunch of lamb entrails being pinned to their door. The families choose someone to represent them, but only ladies are eligible. The 14 tributes then draw lots to see who will win the honour of being Queen, and as Queen you get to be the main course at the feast.
It was banned by Edward Spellman but when Faustus became High Priest he claimed a revelation from the Dark Lord told him to return to their old rituals. There is also a lot drawn as to who will be the Queen’s handmaiden. As handmaiden she must attend to the Queen’s every need and desire in the days up to the Feast. It’s believed that being eaten means the witch chosen as Queen is transubstantiated, and after the coven consumes her body, they become a part of every single witch in the Church of Night forever, their spirit will reside in the Dark Lord’s heart alongside the other Queens, basking in the glow of his glorious fire until the trumpets of the apocalypse are sounded. There is a throne of skulls which the queen sits upon at the Feast before her sacrifice.
Feast of Feasts and Dezmelda:
She and thirteen others chosen for the lottery were all incredibly young, younger even than Sabrina and she drew the lot to be Queen. Her High Priest claimed to have a revelation from the Dark Lord saying that the night before the Feast, the High Priest was to ‘initiate’ her. Rather than allow herself to be violated Dezmelda fled to the woods and has lived there ever since.
Feast of Feasts Hymn:
Take the hunger inside you, banish it in the cold, your flesh to eat, your soul to keep, the dark lord shall behold, Queen Freya we extol
Moon Valley: Kinkles have hunted there for generations. Many familiars live in that part of the woods.
Displays of Power:
Using the wool twine, Lilith, Sabrina and the Weird Sisters each hold a corner in the shape of a pentagram to make themselves and the dead familiar invisible; ‘pulling the wool over the mortals’ eyes’. But they must not speak or move or the cloaking spell won’t take.
Constance Blackwood does a very dangerous, big spell, to fix the lottery so that Prudence is chosen as Queen. She enchants the ballet box for it to select Prudence.
Lilith said to Father Blackwood she feasts on male flesh. but this is the first time we see her actively engaging in the act. She invites the pizza boy with the intent of eating both pizza and delivery boy.
She also uses telekinesis to close the door
Dorcas and Agatha use fetish dolls of Harvey and Tommy Kinkle, and using rocks they smash the dolls while saying ‘let sticks and stones break their witchunters’ bones’ to cause a fatal cave in at the mines.
Sabrina murmurs a Latin based spell of protection over Harvey
Magical Cooking:
Hilda’s Truth Cake, which is originally her mother’s secret recipe for when she thought her husband was having an affair. The effect is instantaneous. one bite and you cannot lie.
Under the effects of the cake, the following is said:
Faustus: When he became High priest after Edward died, he was visited by the Dark Lord telling him to return to their centuries old traditions (though, the Feast of Feasts was not specified). He confirms he is Prudence’s father, and that her mother is dead...indirectly by his hand. She threw herself in a river because he wouldn’t marry her
Constance: She thinks Prudence is a stain and they’re all better off without her. She says she’s not her Queen, that she’s a bastard. She confesses she cast a spell on the Feast Day lottery, enchanting the ballot box to make it choose Prudence as queen, because she believed Prue and her sisters were Faustus’ children. She thinks Blackwood is a voracious slut
Magical Objects: The Feast Day Ballot Box
Familiars: Grandpa Kinkle kills a deer shaped familiar in the woods while Lilith, Sabrina and the Weird Sisters are there.
Infernal Phrases:
Queen Freya lives!
Praise freya, may be meet again

Episode Summary: The Spellmans are selected to host the annual Feast of Feasts and Zelda volunteers to represent their family in the lottery for Queen of the Feast, who is sacrificed and eaten at the feast. During the selection, Sabrina replaces Zelda, and becomes handmaiden to Prudence who is selected as Queen. Sabrina spends the week trying to convince Prudence to reject her selection, and brings her to Baxter High, where she claims Harvey's family are witch hunters. As a precaution, Sabrina casts a protection spell on Harvey. Later, Sabrina discovers that Lady Blackwood was responsible for selecting Prudence as Queen, as Father Blackwood is her biological father. At the feast, Father Blackwood announces that Prudence cannot fulfill her duties as Queen, but before he can cancel the feast, Mildred sacrifices herself and is declared Queen of Feasts. The next day, Agatha and Dorcas perform a ritual to kill Harvey and his brother in the mines.
First Appearances: Dezmelda, Grandpa Kinkle, Nana Ruth Walker
Music: Criminal - Fiona Apple, Venus in Furs - The Velvet Underground and Nico
Deaths: Mildred kills herself cutting her own throat to become Queen of the Feasts. Mr and Mrs Kemper, the parents of the murdered Conner, commit suicide in grief at the death of their son
Baxter High Antics: Lilith has everyone research their family history; through this we learn about Dorothea Putnam and the Kinkles Witch Hunter history
New Locations: Moon Valley,
Random Facts: Zelda likes all contact sports
Spellman History: Edward banned the Feast of Feasts when he was High Priest. He said it was barbaric
Reading Materials: Dorothea Putnam’s diaries
Mortals meet Magic:
Roz learns that Walker Women develop a power called the Cunning when they go blind. It lets them see things others can’t. it goes back generations to when the Walker women accused a woman of being a witch. A consequence, the other witches in Greendale cursed the Walker women with blindness.
The Kinkles weren’t always miners. In the early days when they were Von Kunkels they hunted and trapped. In the terrible winter where Freya sacrificed herself, the coven lived on the outskirts of town, and the mortals of Greendale used to say they were tunnelling in the hills. The Von Kunkles stole the land from the coven, as the ‘hill people’ supposedly scared the town folk. and it was decided that someone should get rid of them. And after they chased the coven out, the Kinkles took the land and made use of it themselves. This means the entrance to Hell used to belong to the coven, before it was taken by the Kinkles and became part of the mines.
Dorothea Putnam was the first Putnam to arrive in Greendale. She helped witches escape persecution in Scotland and was considered a true ally to the Church of Night
The Kinkles are in fact Witch Hunters and therefore Harvey comes from a long line of them.
Suzy sees Dorothea for the first time

Witch Laws:
Witches are not allowed or able to perform exorcisms as they are a Catholic rite
You can be excommunicated for marrying a mortal
Church of Night:
Lilith mentions a Church of Shadows in New Hampshire implying there are many covens of the Churches of Darkness, not just the Church of Night
Displays of Power:
Sabrina wipes all the mirrors cleans of Lilith’s spells.
Sabrina astral projects to Jesse’s room.
Apophis is able to appear in visions, he also managed to choke Sabrina from a distance, slipping down her throat to suffocate her even though she couldn’t see him.
Lilith kills Jesse Putnam by squeezing a fetish doll so that his heart stops.
Lilith teleports into Jesse’s room after the exorcism
Magical Objects:
Lilith has a fetish doll representing Jesse Putnam, which she uses to stop his heart
The Seal of Apophis which was broken
Spells:
Ambrose chants in Latin to free Sabrina from the choking astral projection
Potions:
Hilda puts a love potion in Luke’s coffee so that he’ll fall for Ambrose
Grimoire:
Bathing in blessed water from the sea of Galilee apparently helps clean off psychic attacks
Visions:
Harvey is visited by Jesse. He tells Harvey “You are Godless, your soul is filled with fear and you will die for it”
Roz is visited by Jesse and he tells her ‘there is no faith in you girl so as punishment you shall be made blind’ and when she drops the milk it becomes maggots.
Suzy is visited by Jesse and he tells them “you’re an abomination boy-girl and he will smite you”
Exorcism:
Unlike the catholic exorcism which draws its potency not from the priest performing it but from the False god, the exorcism Sabrina performs relies on the power of the individual witch challenging the demon and on the continuum of witches that predate all of them.
For the exorcism you must speak with a loud clear voice ‘
“We call forth the witches from the shade, those who came before and died so that we might live. Visit us, sisters. intercede on our behalf. I call forth the powers of Lilith, of Aradia, of Morgan le Fay, I call on Black Annis I call on Anne Boleyn I call on the Witch of Endor. I call on Hecate, on Artemis, on Luna to expel this demon. expel Apophis. return him to the Dark Lord. Visit us sisters intercede on our behalf. I call on Hildegard of Bingen I call Marie Laveau. I call Tituba I call Mary Bradbury. Visit us sisters intercede on our behalf. I call Nehman, Badb, Macha. Visit us sisters intercede on our behalf. I call Circe, I call Moll Dyer. visit us sisters intercede on our behalf. I call on Juventas the Virgin, on Juno, lend us your power, expel the demon. Visit us sisters intercede on our behalf. I call on Sybil Leek. I call upon Priscilla Spellman. I call upon Francis Spellman. I call upon Evanora and Locasta Spellman. come forth kindly ones, come forth, Mother of Darkness, lend us power, expel the demon Apophis. Visit us sisters intercede on our behalf, visit us sisters intercede on our behalf, visit us sisters intercede on our behalf, visit us sisters intercede on our behalf”
They then throw salt on him and the demon is expelled
Mythology:
Witch pregnancies last for 13 months rather than 9, showing that they’re not simply humans with powers but aren’t human at all.
Demonolgy:
Cases of actual involuntary demonic possession are extremely rare
One musn’t touch a possessed person as contact makes youn vulnerable to psychological attacks
Demons prey on your fears, your shame etc
Apophis wants to spoil debase and corrupt mortals. Possessions involving Apophis rarely last long. He is a parasitic demon also known as the ‘devouring worm’.
Jesse accidentally set Apophis free by breaking his seal while mining and that’s how he became possessed. Sabrina finds the broken pieces and, after Apophis is thrown in the well in order to let him burrow his way back to hell, Sabrina throws the seal after him, to trap him once more.
Prophecy: We learn that Sabrina needed to perform an exorcism on a mortal as part of the Dark Lord’s grand design. We also learn that the prophecy she’s meant to fulfil will be ‘apocalyptic’
Infernal Phrases:
Praise Satan
Mephistopheles save us from the melodramatics of a teenage witch

Episode Summary:
Madam Satan lies to Sabrina and claims she was her father's secretary when he was a High Priest of the Church of Night, and that he asked her to watch over Sabrina. Susie, Roz, and Harvey all experience frightening apparitions of Susie's Uncle Jesse and they confide in Sabrina. Sabrina astral projects to Uncle Jesse's room and discovers he is possessed by a parasitic demon, which she later identifies as Apophis. Sabrina, with the help of Madam Satan and her aunts, successfully performs an exorcism that expels Apophis from Uncle Jesse. The next day Uncle Jesse dies after suffering a heart attack. However, it is later shown that Madam Satan was responsible, and she thanks Jesse for playing his part in the Dark Lord's plan.
Music: Sold-- Liily
Pop Culture:
Harvey says ‘this isn’t The Goonies’ when Sabrina asks for a map in the mines.
The shot of them arriving at the Putnams is a direct parallel to a shot from The Exorcist
Deaths: .Jesse Putnam, at the hands of Lilith.
Spellman History:
Edward wanted to reform the Church of night and change its laws so that witches and mortals could marry without stigma.
Lilith claims Edward was working on an exorcism rite that witches could perform, but it’s more likely the rite was written by Lilith herself though this is never proven or disproven either way in the series
Reading Materials: Zelda reads the Greendale Gazette after the exorcism
Mortals Meet Magic
The legends of Greendale say the Kinkle Mines burrow all the way to Hell. This is, unknown to mortals, accurate. In the mines, as they do go down to hell, there are many carvings and statues that are actually markers of the path to Hell, including a carving of the Dark Lord, which is Harvey is freaked out by this until he sees it’s just rocks, but hidden behind the statue is the Dark Lord himself. There are also seals and bound demons down there which mortals working in the mines can accidentally release.
Roz’s Father says ‘all the time’ that Roz’s Grandmother went blind because she ‘didn’t have faith’.
Dialogue:
“cases of actual demonic possession are extremely rare despite what the False God and his propaganda machine would have you believe” - Zelda Spellman
“Originally from the time of homer the word ‘demon’ was used to describe a being of benevolence of course that meaning has been perverted by the false church and now carries with it connotations of malevolence” - Faustus Blackwood

Witch Laws:
There’s an Infernal Parole Board.
It is a hex that keeps Ambrose imprisoned in the house. Though astral projection, though disallowed, is a loophole to the hex as shown in the previous episode.
Displays of Power:
Lilith is spying on the Spellmans through the scrying mirror she created and sees Batibat.
Batibat breaks the scrying connection by breaking the mirror.
Lilith is able to travel through dreams from quite a long distance away, though the accuracy of where she lands is off, as she can’t find Sabrina at first, and travels through Ambrose and Hilda’s dreams to get there. However, the fact she can walk through one dream to another when on the other side of town shows considerable power.
Lilith is also shown to levitate
Sabrina, after learning how to do it from Lilith (gin clear mind, self-induced sleep and clear intent), also travels through the dreams, though these are the dreams of those in her house, so she’s able to be more accurate with her direction.
Sabrina glamours Salem to look like herself
Spells: .
Protocols for a demon in house are you seal the house to contain the entity to prevent it from escaping into the world. The Latin spell for this is “Ex spiritibus neam sie te aeris. Qui Omnipotentiam Tuam parcendo clavem ad. Ostium ligate Diabolum hunc! Hoc captionem, et daemonium ab grandus cincinno” Roughly translated: The air will thus bar the spirits. The key to your almighty power. Entrance bind this trap and lock this grand demon.
Zelda appears to traps the demon the first time with the spell “turpis et infernis in terris pariunt. Adiuro vos tamen hoc graecas munus” Roughly translated, the beginning means, hell on earth and ugly, and the last sentence makes no fucking sense as far as I can tell. It’s possible it’s a type of bastardised Latin that became popular in alchemy etc in the 1600s. Such Latin can be near impossible to translate.
Sabrina traps Batibat using the spider familiars to create a dreamcatcher, chanting; "Turpis et infernis in terris pariunt. Et furantur verba haec locutus sum vobis Laetitia. Punctum baculus parit malediction. Adiuro vos tamen hoc graecas munus." Hell on earth and ugly and these words I spoke to you. and then something about sticking and charging a role.
Magical Objects:
Sabrina has let a demon out of Edward’s Acheron.
The demonic metranomes from Batibat seem to keep them asleep; they can’t be touched while they’re asleep, as Sabrina tries and gets a shock from it.
Lilith wakes up Sabrina by sticking a hair pin, sharply, into a fetish doll she had made of her. It makes sabrina’s actual finger bleed and pulls her out of the enchanted sleep.
Grimoire:
Hilda often uses a little foxglove to help her sleep.
Dream Analysis:
Sabrina’s dream is a direct mix of her lives. She’s set entirely in her mortal high school, but the students are witches. She is marrying Harvey, but is asked to run away with Nick. We also see Harvey’s witch hunter nature shown even before Sabrina knows he’s a witch hunter; foreshadowing. We also see Zelda portrayed as cold and unemotional, and Hilda as soft and romantic, which is perhaps the subconscious way Sabrina perceives her aunts. When she is attacked by the Hunters, she sees no one helping her, showing she feels alone in her duality.
Ambrose’s dream is all about being alone, having no connections, feeling no one will mourn his death. Feeling trapped, and being stuck in a vicious circle that never ends. He quite literally dissects himself, misquoting Hamlet as he does so and when he eats his own heart, he claims it tastes bitter, reflecting how he feels about his situation, and those who are free and untrapped around him. Blackwood’s grant of freedom to him in the dream is foreshadowing of the false promises Blackwood makes to him in the future. Ambrose dream is the first time we bump into Lilith.
Hilda’s dream is a mixture of sexual exploration and feeling confined and trapped and belittled by her sister, unable to escape her or her criticism. We also have Lilith’s second appearance in the dreams interrupting the flirting between Hilda and Hawthorne. Hilda declares no one has ever cooked for her before, and we have it confirmed that she is a virgin. Zelda in the dream is cruel and mocking and unsupportive, which shows us how Hilda feels about her sister much of the time. She declares ‘you never want me to happy do you’ and ‘I’m sick to death of being the put upon one’. Hilda slaps Zelda and binds her mouth, calling her an insufferable bitch. Yet, even when she’s bound her and she’s on her date, Hilda only talks about Zelda, showing that her sister will always be a part of her life no matter what, and that’s what she can’t escape, for good or for bad. Which concludes with Hawthorne having sewn them together, permanently. Batibat calls Zelda her ‘dark half’
Zelda’s dream starts with her talking to children about the origin story. This shows Zelda’s maternal inclinations, her focus on children, and as she’s teaching them about Eve (a part she played) and their Satanic bible, it also shows what else Zelda focuses on; the Church of Night. Having the Dark Lord visit reflects her desire for the family to rise in the Church. She sees Hilda as bright and bouncy, but also perfect; she sees Hilda getting all the praise and approval of the Dark Lord, showing not only her own self-doubts but also that she sees Hildain a more positive light than she ever admits out loud. Faustus reperesents thr Dark Lord, because he’s the closest thing to Satan, and Zelda’s attraction to him also reflects her ‘in awe’ feelings towards the Dark Lord, so it’s all compounded into one. While Hilda’s nightmare was being bound to Zelda forever, Zelda’s nightmare was losing Hilda forever, when she kills her and she doesn’t resurrect (also foreshadowing as that happens in part 3) and we actually do not see her kill Hilda again out of malice and irritation ever again. We also parallel the Cain and Abel story where the Dark Lord asks where is Hilda and Zelda replies “Am I my sister’s keeper?”
Infernal Phrases
I treated her like hell rot
For the love of Lucifer
For Satan’s Sake
Mythology:
Batibat is a sleep demon who fills people’s dreams with sublime nightmares. She lulls them to sleep, separates them so their dreams don’t cross over (implying this is possible) and then plagues them with horrific nightmares. Her purpose for the Spellmans was for someone to set her free, but in general she messes with people for the fun of it apparently.
The witch hunters in Sabrina’s dream quote the bible ‘thou shalt not suffer a witch to live’.
Dialogue:
“Never open a magic box if you don’t know what’s inside it” - Zelda
“Your attempts to conciliate your duality will only bring you pain and suffering” Dream Zelda
"Sometimes the oldest simplest magic works best”- Sabrina

Episode Summary: The sleep demon, known as Batibat, places Sabrina, Ambrose, Zelda, and Hilda into a deep sleep where they are tortured in their dream-turned-nightmares in order for one of them to release Batibat from the house. Madam Satan roams their dreams in search of Sabrina in order to wake her. When she awakens, she attempts to banish Batibat but fails. Sabrina enlists Salem's help to distract Batibat while she lucid dreams to get help from Hilda and Ambrose. Hilda informs Sabrina that Batibat must be lured into a trap. With the help of Hilda's familiars, the spiders, Sabrina successfully traps Batibat, waking Hilda, Zelda, and Ambrose. After Batibat is placed back into containment, Sabrina visits Madam Satan after realizing she is not mortal.
First Appearances: Batibat, a sleep demon that tormented Edward. It’s also the first time we hear Lilith referred to as Mother of Demons (at this point we don’t know her name at all).
Music: Dream a Little Dream of Me-- Ozzie Nelson, Dream a Little Dream of Me-- Pink Martini and the Von Trapps
New locations: Dreamscapes
Random Facts: The Spellmans have a hidden door in the aunts’ bedroom.
Spellman History:
Edward was tormented by Batibat and couldn’t sleep because of her. When he talked about it, Zelda presumed he was simply being over-dramatic and speaking in metaphors. Edward trapped Batibat 70 years ago.
We confirm Hilda was at Queen Victoria’s coronation, and despite being a virgin, she did wake up on the Thames naked, so we confirm that Hilda can be as racy as Zelda in her own way.
Relationships:
Batibat accuses Lilith of abandoning her and leaving her to rot inside the Acheron configuration. Lilith seems not to care.
The Dark Lord and Lilith forbid Sabrina be harmed, but Batibat seems not to give a shit.
Reading Materials: Hilda is reading a bodice ripper novel, Zelda is reading the Satanic Bible

Witch Laws: As punishment for being part of a plot to attempt to blow up the Vatican, Ambrose is housebound, even his spirit is forbidden to leave the premises via astral projection
Church of Night: As Hilda is excommunicated she’s not allowed within ‘spitting distance’ of the Academy or any other Church of Night property.
The Academy:
Sabrina claims her only agenda for going to the school is to learn how to conjure, bind and banish the Dark Lord.
Zelda claims ‘only babies and ninnies’ try to bring their familiars to school.
The academy is disguised/glamoured as an abandoned building that says Gehenna Station. Gehenna is a valley in Jerusalem deemed to be cursed due to it being where Judah kings sacrificed their children there by fire.
The Academy was built according to the principals of sacred geometry. Each room is a perfectly proportioned pentagon that interlocks with the one next to it. No one knows how many pentagons there are exactly. Some say an infinite number.
There is a statue of the Dark lord in the centre of the main hall.
Lessons at the Academy include binding spells, conjuring, demonology, necromancy, infernal choir practice, invocation, ritual magic, herbalism, Latin.
The Academy has something called a Harrowing for new students, which is much like hazing.
Familiars are not permitted at the Academy.
The Academy is haunted by a collection of ghost children, at least 8.
The Harrowing:
Sabrina’s first night of Harrowing has her left alone, locked in a witch’s cell where the Greendale 13 (and others of the earliest Greendale witches) were held. They were left in darkness, without food or water, and left to sleep in their own filth (this is actually precisely how the Pendle Witches were left, and many died in captivity before even reaching trial). We see a hand of something, rotting and bloodied, grab Sabrina’s hand.
Her second night involves being taken to the Hanging Tree, and standing before it without shoes and wearing nothing but a night dress, watching the tree and not turning around no matter what she hears. She is tormented by the voices of her loved ones, including her dead parents, appealing to her before being tortured and devoured.
The ghost children that haunt the Academy all died at the hands of their own Harrowing. These include Quentin Corvin, Cyrus Mercy and Percy Parks.
Harrowings have always been a part of the Academy and are apparently tradition. Zelda participated in Harrowings herself, including her own sister’s, in which she killed Hilda.
Sabrina’s third night involves being hung as the Greendale 13 were. This is presumably going to kill her so she was never intended to survive, but with the help of the ghosts this is prevented. We later find out Blackwood had ordered the Weird Sisters to Harrow Sabrina. “The Dark Lord wants Sabrinaa educated at the Academy, so be it, but he gave no indication she shouldn’t suffer while she’s here”
Possession:
Jesse’s possession is not due to seeing the same monster Harvey did, a Harvey saw the Dark Lord.
Jesse’s behaviour is in reference to the style seen in films like The Exorcist.
He tells Harvey ‘He’s going to eat all your souls’. He attacks Harvey and Suzy is forced to knock him out.
Displays of Power:
Zelda astral projects ‘all the time’.
Lilith travels through the shadows to arrive at Blackwood’s office.
Spells:
Astral projection requires candles, the address of the location and a map. Ambrose lies himself in a circle of candles, with his hands on his chest, palms facing his head, and chants repeatedly ‘vola anime (indistinguishable)’ meaning fly the soul. The rest sounds similar to the Latin for foot, or sole of the foot. Zelda pulls him out of the projection by kicking the candles aside, breaking the circle.
Lilith, when at the Spellmans’, takes the the hair, nails and clothing of the family members for use in what appears to be charm bag spells, though we never learn the purpose of them.
Lilith casts a scrying spell using her own spit (using it to make outline the mirror with her figner) on the mirrors in the Spellman house and in her own cottage, creating a link between the two.
The ghosts use their power to hang the weird sisters until they agree to stop the Harrowings. They use the spell ‘light as a feather, stiff as a board’ which is also used as a common magical game in which several people levitate another.
Magical Objects:
Edward’s Acheron configuration, his personal variation of the arcane puzzle. Supposedly only the ‘weak willed’ fall victim to the Acheron’s fascinations. This one was Edward’s thesis: he built it. Nick tried to break it for three years and gave up. The more you stare at it the harder it is to solve and you can get lost in it. He put the answer to solve it in his journal, using Diana as the key. When Sabrina opens it, a demon escapes-
Mythology:
Only the dead are allowed to travel the astral plane. If the living spend too much time there, the psychopomps will find them and assume they are dead and will carry them off to the hereafter or tie them to a pillar in the Abyss.
Psychopomps are apparently, despite their sparrow like appearance, “spiteful, hateful, creatures”. This is in contrast to common real-life mythology where psychopomps are guides between the realms of life and death. Hecate is considered to be a psychopomp.
Ambrose says ‘swear on Satan’s Claw’ while making a claw gesture with his left hand, much like Witch’s Honour in Betwitched.
Familiars:
Though Sabrina screams all the way at the Academy, Salem hears her from the Spellman house and runs to her rescue.
Stolas was spying on the girls in the showers (as he was sent to watch Sabrina, not naked showering, it can be presumed this was his plan not Lilith’s. in direct contrast to Salem’s loyal behaviour). Stolas doesn’t like being caged.

Episode Summary: Sabrina prepares to attend The Academy of Unseen Arts, and plans to find a way to stop Satan. Sabrina is met with contempt by some students and staff, but makes a friend in Nick Scratch. Blackwood tasks Sabrina with solving an arcane puzzle known as the Acheron Configuration, and he agrees she may join conjuring class upon solving the puzzle. The Weird Sisters haze Sabrina with a ritual known as harrowing. Sabrina discovers the history of student deaths due to harrowing, and enlists ghosts to help her against the Weird Sisters. It is revealed that Blackwood is behind their attack. Hilda aids Ambrose in astral projection so he may go on a date with Luke, which almost goes horribly wrong. During this time, Madam Satan arrives and searches the Spellman house for items to aid her in her quest and spy on Sabrina. Meanwhile, Sabrina's friends deal with visions of a monster in the mines. Later, Sabrina discovers her father created the Acheron Configuration. With help from one of his journals given to her by Nick, Sabrina solves the arcane puzzle and unknowingly unleashes a demon.
First Appearances: Quentin, the ghost boy who lives at the Academy. The other ghost children. Constance Blackwood. Nicholas Scratch. Jesse Putnam. Cassius, the Academy librarian (mentioned only)
Music: Casting My Spell - The Pirates, Black Magic Woman - VCTRY,
Pop Culture:
The Fright Club are talking about the film The Fly in Dr Cee’s.
The movie Roz and Suzy are watching at the Putnams’ is “Carnival of Souls”
Deaths: We learn Quentin was Harrowed to death in 1892
Baxter High and Greendale: Suzy is left looking after her Uncle Jesse who is ‘sick’ and rings a bell when he needs something. Actually possessed, his behaviour terrifies the two so that they go to Harvey for help, who believes Jesse might have see the same thing in the mines that he did.
New Locations: The Academy.
Random Facts:
The song the students are singing when Sabrina arrives at choir practice is a real song written by Charles Manson.
Cassius, the name of the librarian, is also the name of one of the main conspirators against Julius Caesar.
Spellman History:
Hilda gives Sabrina protection charms for the Academy, reflecting her own experiences of her first days at the school. Hilda tried to bring her spiders (her familiars) to the Academy. She was also laughed at and called names, including by her sister. Conversely, Zelda’s days at the Academy were among the happiest of her life. Zelda finally apologises in the episode for the way she treated Hilda at the Academy. Hilda tells her that she was ruthless, but appears to accept her apology.
Edward’s journals are considered dangerous due to him being a controversial figure in the witch community. Edward was the greatest conjurer the Academy ever produced, according to Nick.
Blackwood says how fiercely maternal Zelda has always been and we are given the first hints of their romantic past, with Zelda smiling at his compliments but being shocked by his request for her to be Constance’s midwife.
Zelda has never lost a baby in all her midwifery, but by this point in the series, it has been years since she delivered a child.
Ambrose tells Luke that he was arrested for attempting to blow up the Vatican. This is why he is under house arrest.
Relationships: Luke calls to ask Ambrose on a date. As he can’t leave the house, he asks Hilda to help him astral project to meet him. The pair of them have their first date at Dr Cee’s but Ambrose is out of practice.
Reading Materials: Edward’s journal.
Mortals Meet Magic: According to Mr Putnam, Jesse got ‘sick’ when he was working down in the Kinkle Mines. He saw something down there and ‘just went crazy’. He claims he saw a monster; this matches Harvey’s childhood experience from the previous episode.

Witch Laws:
Ambrose is not allowed a Familiar as per his rules of house arrest.
Infernal Summons: a legally binding summoning by the Witches’ Council.
Sabrina is charged with ‘breach of promise’ in refusing to sign the Dark Lord’s Book. The family is summoned to the Court of Witches as consequence.
Witch Law states that you are guilty until proven innocent.
There are three judges, referred to as The Infernal Three and given the title ‘Dishonour’.
Church of Night:
Hilda is excommunicated from the Church of Night for taking part in a Catholic baptism.
There appears to be a door to an infernal chamber in the church, a gate way between Hell and Earth where one can meet with the Dark Lord when permitted.
Dark Baptism: Sabrina is given ‘dual citizenship’ in that she retains powers without a baptism, and is allowed to retain mortal and witch life.
Displays of Power:
As we don’t hear the door go in bathroom, it’s presumed Lilith teleports behind sabrina
Hilda and Zelda are stripped of their powers by the Council for the duration of the trial, which means they age and rot rapidly until a verdict is passed.
Lilith appears from the shadows and watches from the shadows, and is shown to have the ability to become a literal shadow
We confirm Lilith feasts on specifically male flesh.
Lilith wears a glamour pretending to the ghost of Daniel’s daughter.
Lilith uses siren song to call to Sabrina (and appears as the Webster girl again)
Lilith stops time around Sabrina with a single breath.
Magical Objects: Hilda has a chest where, when she closes the lid and waves her hand over it, the entire contents change.
Grimoire: The symbols on the Desecrated Church imply it was originally a Christian church that was officially desecrated, and turned against the False God. It is possible there is a specific ritual involved, and this is how desecrated churches are made.
Visions: Ros sees a reflection of herself where her eyes are entirely black
Mythology:
This is the first time we learn of a mortal signing his soul away for a gift from Lucifer. Daniel signed his name in a book, but it is a different book to the Book of the Beast. We are not given its name.
Witches do tend to have a witch’s mark (a spot that does not bleed).
The path of night shares a commandment with the False God’s religions’ ‘honour thy father and mother’.
Familiars:
Familiars only speak to the witch they are bound to
They tend to die after their master dies
After Luke stays over Connor’s familiar is, suspiciously, found dead.

Episode Summary: Sabrina must deal with the aftermath of her decision to leave her dark baptism. She is summoned by the coven and Blackwood, who are suing her for breaking her promise. Zelda and Hilda are also affected and lose their powers during the trial. Sabrina hires a mortal lawyer who specializes in witch law to help her win the trial. Madam Satan does everything in her power to manipulate Sabrina. As the trial continues, Blackwood is adamant that Sabrina must sign her name in the Book of the Beast as her father promised she would days after she was born. However, Hilda provides evidence that Sabrina had received a Catholic baptism prior to her father’s agreement, which shocks Blackwood and the council. In the end, they offer Sabrina a deal —to remain in the mortal world while also attending The Academy of the Unseen Arts. Hilda is excommunicated for her role as a witness in Sabrina’s Christian baptism. Meanwhile, Ambrose seeks to learn more about the warlock he thinks was killed by witch hunters.
First Appearances: Mr Garland is mentioned as the Literature teacher. Ms Curtis is seen in her role as librarian. Daniel Webster, a lawyer with a specialism in Witch Law, rumoured to have once beaten the devil himself. Tommy Kinkle. Mr Kinkle. Luke Chalfant
Music: Dead End - Kaviar Special , Wild woman- Sleep Machine, Blood in the Cut- K.Flay
Pop Culture: The book Ros wishes to do her report on , and is ‘unofficially’ banned by the schoo, is The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison. Daniel Webster is also the name of the titular character of the film ‘The Devil and Daniel Webster’ which is about a man who sells his soul to the devil and Daniel, a fictional version of the real lawyer, defends him.
Deaths: Connor Kemplar’s lizard. We also have Connor’s funeral.
Baxter High Antics:
They discover a list of books that are unofficially banned, and that in recent past there was a ‘soft purge’ of ‘bad books’. W.I.C.C.A starts campaigning agains this, ‘making their voices heard’, and begin handing out the list of books Baxter High doesn’t permit.
We also learn Ros is going blind.
Lilith starts a secret banned-titles-only book club for W.I.C.C.A
New locations: The Desecrated Church,
Random Facts: Hawthorne, Wardwell and Putnam are all surnames from the Salem Witch Trials
Spellman History:
Daniel Webster knew Edward Spellman and Zelda claims Daniel was a ‘hanger on’. He was the reason Daniel came to Greendale in the first place, he comforted him after the loss of his daughter and was the one to teach him Witch Law. This implies Edward hung out with mortals frequently and revealed his identity to them, not just to Diana.
Hilda and Zelda are certified midwives and they delivered Sabrina.
Edward and Diana:
Edward signed Sabrina’s name in the Book of the Beast when she was a baby, while Diana secretly baptised her at a Catholic Church the day before. Diana took Hilda as witness, Edward took Zelda.
Edward gained the Dark Lord’s permission to marry Diana by promising him the soul of their first born child.
Relationships: Luke and Ambrose have sex. Sabrina and Harvey strip down together in the woods in the search for a witch’s mark (it is later confirmed they did not sleep together).
Reading Materials: Lilith hand-makes a scrap book of newspaper articles related to Daniel Webster
Mortals meet magic: We learn that 8 years ago when Harvey was in the mines, he saw the Dark Lord at the gates of Hell.
DIALOGUE:
“I accompanied Edward into the Greendale Wood, in his arms he carried his newborn daughter, Sabrina. When we reached a clearing he placed the babe on an altar and signed her name in the Book of the Beast, promising her soul to the Dark Lord” Zelda Spellman
‘There’s always a trick. And a price” Daniel Webster
“Don’t follow me, don’t wait for me; just get her to the court. You’re not the only one with secrets, Zelda Spellman” - Hilda Spellman
“No, I’ll tell you what’s outrageous; the Dark Lord’s behaviour’ Sabrina Spellman
“It’s always brute force with you men, isn’t it? But real corruption is a thin subtle blade” - Lilith

“The Dark Lord is not the embodiment of evil, but the embodiment of free will. Good and Evil are words that matter to the False God but the Dark Lord is beyond such precepts” : Faustus Blackwood
‘When I was your age I signed my name in the Book of the Beast. I mean us girls didn’t have any options back then, it’s just simply what was done. Do i have regrets? You mustn’t tell your Aunt Zelda this but some days, some nights, I dream that I am walking through the Greendale Woods in the peak of dry season with a lit torch in each hand so that I watch the whole forest burn like so much kindling” Hilda Spellman
“Any silly doubts or regrets you feel keep them to your self. The simple truth is Sabrina has no choice in this matter, to pretend otherwise is reckless” Zelda Spellman
Prudence: He’ll never give you freedom and power. The Dark Lord. The thought of you, of any of us, having both terrifies him. Sabrina: Why is that? Prudence: He’s a man isn’t he?
“I admire your defiance, girl, but you will sign my book, you will beg to sign it. You think this is a contest, you think you can defeat me, but you cannot and do you know why? Because your flesh is mortal and in the end all mortal flesh must burn” Lucifer Morningstar
“It’s as though a veil drops between you and the mortal world and eventually, quite quickly, you’re weaned from it. You’ll want to forget them or else the pain is too great to bear. Time slows down; they grow old and you don’t, and those things will either seem important to them or trivial to you” Ambrose Spellman

Witch Laws:
There are thirteen commandments.
Witches and Mortals are forbidden to be together due to their ‘inherent incompatibility’.
The coven forbids meaningful connections with mortals.
Dark Baptism:
A witch’s Dark Baptism is the most sacred unholy sacrament, the oldest of their rites and they’ve been performing them for centuries.
The idea that signing the Book is equivalent to giving the Dark Lord dominion over your soul is only one interpretation, many witches choose to see it a symbolic gesture of devotion, signing your name is considered to be more a ‘pledge’.
Once a witch has signed the Book at their Baptism, they are obliged to do the Dark Lord’s bidding if he calls on you.
Witches are, according to Blackwood, free to leave the Church of Night at any time post-baptism (but there is no mention of undoing your name in the Book).
Witches are only allowed to wear black to their Dark Baptism, though it hasn’t been an official rule for decades.
The day before a Dark Baptism should be spent in quiet contemplation, studying Satanic Verses.
Zelda and Hilda collect the Black Narcissus, a black goat, for the Dark Baptism as well as the blood as the Kemplar boy. The goat is not used during the ceremony before Sabrina runs, though the blood is.
If you are late to your own Baptism, the Hell Flames will burn you
When Sabrina arrives there is a bough of branches to walk through, an sigils made out of twigs also hang there. Her white dress turns to black before she steps through the arch of blue Hellfire, walking through the flames to reach her Baptism. A fire is lit in the centre of the glade and everyone is dressed in costume or best clothes, there is whispered chanting in Latin and the Book of the Beast waits, open, on the stone altar.
Dark Baptism Ceremony:
High Priest. Welcome Daughter of Night. Who presents this child for Unholy Baptism? Parents/Guardians of child: We do, your excellency.
The guardians are then instructed to disrobe the initiate until she stands in her slip and bare feet
High Priest: We are gathered together in these woods in the presence of our Dark Lord, with all the souls the living and the dead of our coven, the most unholy Church of Night. Kneel, child
The initiate kneels. The High Priest then dips his thumb in the blood (preferably human)
High Priest: Our Dark Lord teaches us there is no law beyond do what thou wilt
The High Priest marks the Dark Lord’s sigil upon the forehead of the initiate in the blood
High Priest: Our Dark Lord asks; would you like to be happy child, to be free, free to love, to hate, to be what nature meant you to be, true to her laws and yourself only? Initiate: Yes, Father High Priest: Do you believe in Lucifer, the archangel who preferred the loss of heaven to that of his pride? Initiate: Yes, Father High Priest: In exchange for this belief you shall be granted powers that will enable you to be of service to the Dark Lord. Sabrina Edwina Diana Spellman, are you willing to forsake the Path of Light and follow the Path of Night wherever it may lead you? Initiate: I am High Priest: Are you willing to place our Dark Lord above all others in your life, be it your loved ones, your family, your friends, your neighbours? Initiate: I am High Priest: Then it is time to sign his Book
The High Priest then leads the initiate by the hand to the Book. He then cuts her hand with a blade and squeezes her blood onto the page. She then dips the bone quill in the blood to sign her name in it.
High Priest; In signing his Book of the Beast you swear to obey without question any order you may receive from the Dark Lord or from any he has placed in authority over you. In signing his book, the Book of the Beast, you swear to give your mind, body and soul unreservedly to the furtherance of the designs of our Lord Satan
Displays of Power:
Zelda astral projects into Sabrina’s room to spy on her and Hilda.
When Sabrina runs from her Baptism, vines and trees reach out to grab her and pull her back. They actively wrap around her feet like ropes and try to drag her back; it is not clear whether this is Blackwood’s work or the Dark Lord’s.
Sabrina and the Weird Sister manipulate electricity, making the street lights flicker. They also make their laughter carry in the air and summon winds to blow the trees, and make the boys hear music that is coming from nowhere.
The Weird Sisters control the light of a gas lamp with a single look. They also turn off all the lights into utter darkness with one snap of their fingers.
Spells:
“A circle of protection rings this house. and no witch save a Spellman may cross it. Any unwelcome witch that tries shall burn!’ Though this is only a bluff, it works, suggesting such a spell does exist.
Summoning the Weird Sisters: Chant, while winding a white rope around three twigs, “Weird Sisters hand in hand, travellers of the sea and land, thrice to thine and thrice to mine and thrice again to make up nine. Peace the charms wound up"
Illusion Spell: Sabrina and the Weird Sisters make it seem as if the four high school boys are making out with them in the mines, when in fact they are making out with each other. The flash and sound of a camera breaks the illusion.
Devil in the Dark: The Weird Sisters weird demonic face glamours to terrify the mortal boys
Caged Birds: To keep the boys from getting an erection, they lock four birds in a cage. Each bird represents each boy’s so-called manhood and until the birds are released, they are unable to ‘rise to any occasion’.
Grimoire:
‘The Devil’ is a Christian term and the Church of Night do not use it. Use of a Malum Malus hasn’t been recognised for decades, specifically because of its supposed wild inaccuracy.
Hilda is resurrected from the Cain Pit. Zelda states that each time she’s killed, Hilda takes longer and longer to resurrect and that one day she will not come back, implying the Cain Pit does have it’s limits.
Sabrina crosses her fingers when making a promise so she does not have to keep it.
Visions: At her Baptism, Sabrina sees her parents. Diana is holding a baby Sabrina. Edward is shaking his head, while Diana repeatedly says ‘run’.
Possessions: Principal Hawthorne is possessed by Lucifer. Time stops while it happens and blood pours from his eyes and foam from his mouth.
Mythology:
Hell is reserved only for mortals; in exchange for their service and devotion, witches are exempt from the eternal flames of damnation.
The Dark Lord’s book, the Book of the Beast, is the most ancient tome in existence.
Free will is declared to be the ‘bed rock’ on which the Church of Night is based.
Being a Satanic Witch does not make you evil; Good and Evil are declared to be Christian terms, whereas the Church of Night considers the individual.
The Dark Lord is not the embodiment of evil, but the embodiment of free will.
Witches live for centuries, but we don’t confirm how many.

Episode Summary: Sabrina and her family are visited by Father Blackwood, the High Priest of the Church of Night. Blackwood seeks to reassure Sabrina and answer her questions about her baptism to sway her. Meanwhile, Ambrose deals with a corpse for the Spellman funeral home who he believes was a warlock —and possibly killed by a witch hunter. Sabrina’s friend, Susie, is being bullied by four football players, causing Sabrina to take matters into her own hands. She teams up with the Weird Sisters to teach the boys a lesson by scaring them. However, she is still racked with the choice. Sabrina’s birthday arrives, and she decides to spend her last night with her friends at a Halloween party. As midnight approaches, Sabrina heads toward her dark baptism with unease. The ritual is completely different from what Blackwood described and at the last minute Sabrina denies the Dark Lord and flees. She is attacked in the woods but arrives at her house. There, she proclaims her refusal to sign the Book of the Beast, ending the baptism.
First Appearances: Billy’s friends are named as Ed Dursley Seth Grimless and Carl Tapper. The Dark Lord (first proper appearance rather than in a vision. He comes to Mary’s cottage).
Locations: Greendale gas station, The Kinkle Mines (also known as The Devil’s Doorway)
Music: Devil Woman - Cliff Richards, Terrible Thing - AG and Brad Gordon, Strange Magic - ELO, Full Moon Tonight - Silvastone feat BELLSTAINT, Monster Mash - Bobby “Borris” Picket & The Crypt-Kickers, Sixteen Candles - Stray Cats
Pop Culture: When talking comics, Ambrose references Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman and Grant Morrison. The spell to summon the Weird Sisters is from Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
Deaths: Zelda plans to kill Hilda a whole day ahead of actually doing it. She kills her with a hammer blow to the head. Connor (pronounced dead in October Country) is confirmed to have been found killed in the park.
Baxter High Antics:
Billy and the other ‘Golden Boys’ of Greendale tear down the W.I.C.C.A posters and call Susie a dyke. Susie, in reply, calls Billy Dicks for Brains and attacks them. Billy punches Susie, but Susie is the one who gets suspended. Sabrina gets the boys’ names and goes to ‘Ms Wardwell’ for suggestions about what to do; her advice is to fight fire with Hellfire. Sidenote: Lilith is already doing paperwork.
The Baxter High team are the ‘Ravens’.
We have the first W.I.C.C.A meeting, which Lilith attends as ‘Faculty Adviser’ and confirms she will be at every meeting.
Greendale Lore: Local legend says the Kinkle Mines run so deep that one shaft takes you all the way down to hell
Witch Insults: Half-breed
Random Facts:
Faustus pronounces Samhain wrong. He says sam-ain when it’s sow-en. It’s Irish; I know how it’s pronounced. Faustus denies knowing Conner, though he confirms the mark is a Witch’s mark, yet we later learn Conner was part of the Judas Society.
Hilda has a vegetable garden.
We see Ambrose showing concern for Kemplars and Zeldas asks ‘you’re not meddling in mortals affairs again, are you?’ implying Sabrina is not the only one who feels ties to the mortal realm.
Halloween Costumes: Harvey is a miner, Sabrina in her mother’s wedding dress, Ros is dressed as Cleopatra, Susie’s costume is Eddie Munster
Spellman History: Hilda feels she had no choice in signing the Book of the Beast. She signed it when she was 16 years old because it was ‘simply what was done’ but is implied to have regrets. Montgomery Cliff is implied to be the Spellmans’ warlock cousin.
Edward and Diana:
The Dark Lord himself gave Edward special dispensation to marry Diana, but even then there was still controversy.
Faustus confirms what Hilda and Zelda said in October Country, that their death was a tragic accident and an inquiry proved that.
Edward was considered one of the Church of Night’s greatest thinkers, and wanted Sabrina to follow in his footsteps.
Edward received the call to Priesthood early, when he was only six years old. He was incredibly charismatic and everyone wanted to follow him wherever he went, and he was extremely handsome.
We get to see Diana’s wedding dress, which is very 50s. Hilda says Diana and Edward were a fairytale.
Familiars: Salem does not join Sabrina at her Baptism but remains with Ambrose at the house.
True Faces: We see the Dark Lord in his full current form, half-man and half goat, much like many Christian imaginings of him.
Times: Sabrina’s birthday and Baptism takes place on Halloween under a blood moon, but after she runs away from the ceremony, the next day we see is November 3rd. We are not shown the weekend
Sabrina the Teenage Witch References; The Monster Mash. The song was also used in the 90s show when Hilda and Zelda were trapped at their Aunt’s Halloween Party.
Relationships: We see our first glimpse of the abusive dynamic of the relationship between Lilith and Lucifer, as Lilith quivers and trembles in fear at his feet.
Reading Materials: The Book of the Beast (presented by Faustus at the Dark Baptism), Zelda is reading a Russian newspaper on the morning of November 3rd.

Witch Laws: The Path of Night or the Path of Light but not Both. It is ‘Sacred Witch Law’ for a witch/warlock not to marry a mortal.
Dark Baptism: The powers of a witch fade if they do not have their Dark Baptism. Initiates must be virginal at their baptism. Sabrina’s Dark Baptism is taking place on her 16th birthday which is also an eclipsing blood moon, which only happens ever 66 years. A Dark Baptism is the ritual/ceremony is leaving girlhood/boyhood behind and requires the initiate to renounce any and all meaningful connections to mortals. Before a witch can be baptised, the temple of their body needs to be purified, cleansed of its toxins. Witches choose a baptismal name at their baptism much like Catholics do
Hilda’s Cleansing Potion: Milk, eggs, rosemary, acrimony, a capful of vanilla, a pinch of John the Conqueror Root, other herbs from Hilda’s garden. Cinnamon is added to the second batch
Displays of Power:
Sabrina turns on the music with a point of her finger.
Lilith uses telekinesis to throw scissors through the air.
Weird Sisters arrive by teleportation/witch flight.
Spells:
Body changing spell. Lilith draws sigils in Mary’s blood, while chanting ‘Dominos parta respica ad mea creo faciem’ which roughly translated, means, ‘dominate this look to create a face of my own’. Lilith then looks entirely like Mary from head to foot (though as she is still in the same grey night gown, it confirms she has not possessed the body of the woman, but created her own version of the body).
Familiar summoning spell. Sabrina rings a bell, then says ‘spirits of the forest I pronounce my intentions to thee. Come forth and seek me and equal we’ll be’. She rings the bell a second time. “Not master and servant but familiar to familiar. To share our knowledge, our spirit and our traits” She rngs the bell a third time. Meanwhile, through the spell, she draws a circle in the earth with a line running through it.
Weird Sisters Blood Curse. Though the spell is hard to hear over Sabrina talking, what can be heard appears to be ‘Vos omnis minis niota et destruciones et servis e discor et queme tempera facetis et tractarus corde nocimus mer ad mes, Sabrina’. Which, roughly translated, means ‘With all shaking threats, the hour of destruction at whom he and his servants meet, bringing harm to the heart of Sabrina. My Latin is not the best, so this is a very rough guess translation.
Hex Removal Spell: While showering under running water, Sabrina chants in repeat ‘if truly I am cursed today, let water wash the hex away’
Sabrina’s Forgetting Spell: She chants ‘bless your mind, bless your heart, let these painful thoughts depart’ and then kisses him to seal the spell.
Blood Curse Removal: Saltwater baths and reversing candles for a couple of weeks.
Hawthorne Scare Spell: Requires a graven image. This image is then placed in a box of spiders (the thing he fears), while Ambrose and Sabrina chant ‘Spider o spider pray why do you spin your pretty white web so fine and thing? To catch flies and make them into pies. Spider o spider, pray do you not see? Here comes a big, buzzing, blundering bee. He’ll spoil your fine net while you fume and you fret, but no mercy you’ll grant and no mercy you’ll get’
Scarecrow Monster: Lilith creates a puppet from scratch, attached to strings, which exists as a scarecrow in reality. She controls its movements with the puppet strings and uses it to attack and chase Sabrina with the intent of keeping her away from the apple tree. When it is attacked by Salem, the puppet is also destroyed.
Minor Direction Spell: Cast like a children’s rhyme. Sabrina chants ‘Hickory pickory hickory pickory where shall this girl go? She’ll go east she’ll go west she’ll go to the crow’s nest. Hickory pickory hickory pickory’
Grimoire:
Egg Breaking: Hilda has Sabrina break an egg to see if she is truly cursed. When the egg cracks and reveals a blood fetus, it confirms Sabrina is under a blood curse.
Blood curse: A curse which slowly eats away at your healthy will and your sanity.
Malum Malis: An apple. If a man bites it, it’s the apple of evil, but for a woman it’s the fruit of knowledge. It whispers secrets, grants knowledge, offers glimpses of the future. You must go to an orchard, find the oldest tree, the older the tree the more it has seen, the more it knows, the more accurate its reading will be.
Curse Shoes: There are at least twenty single shoes on shelves lining a wall in the Spellman house. These represent each person Zelda has cursed.
Visions:
Bath in the woods: While in the bath, Sabrina has a vision which takes her to the woods where she was born. There she sees Diana and Edward in the grove in the forest, Diana is holding a crying baby we presume to be Sabrina. The parents walk off towards the altar, where they place the baby alongside another. When Sabrina lifts back the blankets off the babies’ feet, one has human feet, the other has cloven.
Malum Malis: Sabrina asks the apple if she should be baptised and when she bites it the apple, the fruit turns entirely to maggots. The vision it shows her is in red and shows ash in the air, burning, and thirteen witches hanging from the tree. The tree trunk then begins to break open and out steps the Dark Lord in his full goat-like form. While Sabrina watches in horror, there is a light behind her that looks like the fires of Hell she summons as Sabrina Morningstar in the Part 3 finale.
Mythology:
Witch Hunters are mentioned as a legitimate and current threat, and witches without covens are considered ‘easy pickings’.
Zelda laments not having had ‘long pig’ for dinner in ages, confirming the coven indulges in cannibalism.
Their coven is called the Church of Night.
The Book of the Beast is the name of the Dark Lord’s Book
‘Dark Lord’ is the church’s name for Lucifer.
Witches have a Witches’ Mark, a spot on their body that does not bleed.
There is a council of witches, simply called the Witches’ Council or The Council for short. Among being a clear source of government within the covens, they also have a registry of familiars. The Familiar Registry is a catalogue for choosing one of the familiars that have been purposefully bred for service to witchkind.
Familiars are goblins who have taken on the shape of animals in order to better serve their witch masters.

Mary Wardwell: Everyone knows about the witch hunt in Salem but there was one right here in Greendale.1692. Thirteen witches were hung in the forest and their angry spirits have haunted the woods ever since. Lilith: How do you know so much about witches? Mary: Well, I am Greendale’s unofficial town historian, I suppose. (….) Mary: Do you know Sabrina? Lilith: No, but I knew her bastard of a father who broke sacred witch law when he married a mortal sow.
Sabrina: Do you remember at the beginning of the school year what Ms Wardwell told us about Ye Ol’ Greendale? How there were witch trials like in Salem, but no one ever talked about them or wrote about them? There are no gravestones, no monuments…that’s because the witches didn’t want anyone to know, so that the coven could keep living in Greendale privately, undisturbed, through the centuries. Prudence: You don’t want what happened to your Mother and Father to happen to you Dorcas: The accident that took their lives Agatha: It would be tragic if a similar one befell you
