Part 1 Episode 1 - "Is Lupin... Burning?"
It's me, the Lupin Apologist and thanks for clicking on my episode review for P1E1, "Is Lupin... Burning?" The answer to that question and many other burning issues are beneath the cut. Enjoy!
An alternate title to this episode could have been Vroom Vroom, and I think it still would have worked.
It is difficult to jump into Part 1 without establishing some chronological context first. Even though this is the first episode of part one, it is not the pilot of Lupin the Third. In fact, the pilot was a 1969 short film produced two years after Monkey Punch released the first Lupin the Third manga. I didn't know this when I first started watching the series and I think the pilot film is one of the hidden gems of the franchise. More on the pilot film in my next post (come to think of it)!
Also, you can't talk about part one without talking about the intro. For now, suffice to say that the intro is a BOP and whoever says it isn't is mean.
ok now onto the real shit.
The episode opens with a suspicious character trying to pour some magic shit into Lupin's race car. I WILL be calling it nascar for this whole post. I don't care if it's technically indy cars or whatever, I was raised in Appalachia so everything is nascar to me. Respect my culture!
Lupin then calls Jigen and their plot is then discussed. Fujiko Mine is supposed to be infiltrating the offices of the company who is sponsoring the race, the Miracle Hotel. This is an iconic exchange and one of the more light hearted parts of the episode. Some of my favorite lines are delivered in this exchange, one of them being from Jigen. When Lupin asks him how Fujiko is doing on the mission, he says he doesn't know but is "sure she'll be fine." Spoiler alert, but she is anything but fine!
While Fujiko was attempting to plant a bug in the conference room of the Miracle Hotel, the commissioner captures her and straps her to a table. He then reveals that the entire race was a rouse he created as a death trap for Lupin (Death Cab for Cutie reboot?) and raises some interesting points about human nature. Why are humans unable to resist certain things? What is going on in Lupin's schema that makes him a sucker for a good nascar race? Whatever it is, the commissioner is capitalizing on his racing addiction and hoping that this vice will lead to his demise, and eventually the collapse of the crime empire Lupin is cultivating. Fujiko tries to contact Jigen and tell him what she just learned, but a henchman stomps on her walkie-talkie and she goes no-contact with Jigen.
Meanwhile, Lupin becomes aware of Inspector Zenigata's presence in the race. He is right behind Lupin, hot on his trail but he could never quite catch him. This is a sick metaphor for Zenigata's life and role in the franchise. He is capable, strong, and a victim of his own power. Zenigata goes into an interesting monologue where he states "If he wasn't the grandson of Arsene Lupin... and I wasn't a descendent of Heiji Zenigata..." and he never concludes that thought. If you weren't, then what?! Would you be friends? Would you admire him? Do you already admire Lupin and the whole "gentleman thief" thing is just a monkey wrench, Zenigata? Would he be a colleague, or something more? We may never know the answer to this question, but holy shit isn't speculating fun!?
The middle of the episode explores a few sub plots. Jigen and Lupin switch cars on the race track and Jigen drives the car for a little bit (beep beep). Lupin infiltrates the hotel posing as a plumber (whose hat has a wide ass brim, bro why is your hat so damn big?) and Fujiko gets sexually harassed by the commissioner. Yay! Lupin rescues Fujiko, electrocutes a bunch of guys, switches back with Jigen and returns to win the race. Yay! Fujiko bonks Jigen on the head and ties him up. Yay! Lupin blows up the race track! Yay! Fujiko cuts a deal with Zenigata and turns him in for her arrest warrant. Yay! Lupin fools Zenigata and gets off scot free for killing a ton of people! Yay! Lupin and Fujiko ride off into the sunset. Yay. Episode complete.
Fujiko's portrayal in this episode is really interesting. It's much different than what we will see in parts two-five. She's much more subtle about her intentions. She is calm and collected, and while she will always remain competent, there is an air about her that convinces others to trust her. Part of this is Jigen's behavior towards her. Jigen is very trusting of Fujiko in this episode. He gives her a pet name, he turns his back to her. And she takes advantage of that. I think this is before Fujiko enters into the femme fatale reputation of her own choosing, and a demonstration of how she really does know how to protect herself when she has control. For some reason she let herself be captured earlier in the episode, when I fully believe she would have been able to take him. Why would she let herself get captured?
She knew Lupin would drop everything to come rescue her. He would leave the race he was so enticed to participate in (even plan for that possibility with Jigen) because he loves her so. This episode is a great introduction into the intricacies of Lupin and Fujiko's relationship. At this point in time, I think it is one sided on Lupin's part. But I think as time goes on and we see more of their lives, we can be convicted that Fujiko truly loves him, too, and just faces different barriers to the realization of that love than Lupin ever will.
The final thing I would like to talk about is the title of this episode, and how it comes full circle. The commissioner arrives to the scene of the race and finds that it is in flames and rejoices that it is burning, for despite all of the hassle, his plan has come to fruition. Lupin is burning! He's going to burn in Hell! We win!
That couldn't be further from the truth. Lupin capsizes that plan and burns the entire place to the ground. Lupin isn't burning, but he is burning. He is the catalyst, not the variable. He is the perpetrator, not the victim. Thus continues Lupin's full sprint into the beginning of his legacy, as he has been a fugitive for longer than we've known him.
episode stats
Four stars. It's a good opener but the droning nascar noises will hurt your head after a while and some of the character designs are just... meh, they're still figuring things out. It gets better the more you get into part one.
Trigger/content warnings: sexual assault/harassment, death, electrocution in water, explosions, nascar, tickle torture, nudity
Plot is good and easy to follow! I like how the symbolic title comes into play.
Does Fujiko get sexualized? Yes, and you see her nips.
Kill count: AT LEAST an entire hotel staff and some nascar drivers.
Flash warning for the scene where Lupin electrocutes everyone in the tickle chamber (it'll make sense once you watch it)
Thank you for reading! Please like, comment, and reblog. I would love to know what you've thought of this episode and your thoughts on part one in general. I always have thought that is was underrated and under appreciated, so I am very happy to start my blog by shining a spotlight on it.
I'll see you on this channel! ;)

Witch Laws: The Path of Night or the Path of Light but not Both. It is ‘Sacred Witch Law’ for a witch/warlock not to marry a mortal.
Dark Baptism: The powers of a witch fade if they do not have their Dark Baptism. Initiates must be virginal at their baptism. Sabrina’s Dark Baptism is taking place on her 16th birthday which is also an eclipsing blood moon, which only happens ever 66 years. A Dark Baptism is the ritual/ceremony is leaving girlhood/boyhood behind and requires the initiate to renounce any and all meaningful connections to mortals. Before a witch can be baptised, the temple of their body needs to be purified, cleansed of its toxins. Witches choose a baptismal name at their baptism much like Catholics do
Hilda’s Cleansing Potion: Milk, eggs, rosemary, acrimony, a capful of vanilla, a pinch of John the Conqueror Root, other herbs from Hilda’s garden. Cinnamon is added to the second batch
Displays of Power:
Sabrina turns on the music with a point of her finger.
Lilith uses telekinesis to throw scissors through the air.
Weird Sisters arrive by teleportation/witch flight.
Spells:
Body changing spell. Lilith draws sigils in Mary’s blood, while chanting ‘Dominos parta respica ad mea creo faciem’ which roughly translated, means, ‘dominate this look to create a face of my own’. Lilith then looks entirely like Mary from head to foot (though as she is still in the same grey night gown, it confirms she has not possessed the body of the woman, but created her own version of the body).
Familiar summoning spell. Sabrina rings a bell, then says ‘spirits of the forest I pronounce my intentions to thee. Come forth and seek me and equal we’ll be’. She rings the bell a second time. “Not master and servant but familiar to familiar. To share our knowledge, our spirit and our traits” She rngs the bell a third time. Meanwhile, through the spell, she draws a circle in the earth with a line running through it.
Weird Sisters Blood Curse. Though the spell is hard to hear over Sabrina talking, what can be heard appears to be ‘Vos omnis minis niota et destruciones et servis e discor et queme tempera facetis et tractarus corde nocimus mer ad mes, Sabrina’. Which, roughly translated, means ‘With all shaking threats, the hour of destruction at whom he and his servants meet, bringing harm to the heart of Sabrina. My Latin is not the best, so this is a very rough guess translation.
Hex Removal Spell: While showering under running water, Sabrina chants in repeat ‘if truly I am cursed today, let water wash the hex away’
Sabrina’s Forgetting Spell: She chants ‘bless your mind, bless your heart, let these painful thoughts depart’ and then kisses him to seal the spell.
Blood Curse Removal: Saltwater baths and reversing candles for a couple of weeks.
Hawthorne Scare Spell: Requires a graven image. This image is then placed in a box of spiders (the thing he fears), while Ambrose and Sabrina chant ‘Spider o spider pray why do you spin your pretty white web so fine and thing? To catch flies and make them into pies. Spider o spider, pray do you not see? Here comes a big, buzzing, blundering bee. He’ll spoil your fine net while you fume and you fret, but no mercy you’ll grant and no mercy you’ll get’
Scarecrow Monster: Lilith creates a puppet from scratch, attached to strings, which exists as a scarecrow in reality. She controls its movements with the puppet strings and uses it to attack and chase Sabrina with the intent of keeping her away from the apple tree. When it is attacked by Salem, the puppet is also destroyed.
Minor Direction Spell: Cast like a children’s rhyme. Sabrina chants ‘Hickory pickory hickory pickory where shall this girl go? She’ll go east she’ll go west she’ll go to the crow’s nest. Hickory pickory hickory pickory’
Grimoire:
Egg Breaking: Hilda has Sabrina break an egg to see if she is truly cursed. When the egg cracks and reveals a blood fetus, it confirms Sabrina is under a blood curse.
Blood curse: A curse which slowly eats away at your healthy will and your sanity.
Malum Malis: An apple. If a man bites it, it’s the apple of evil, but for a woman it’s the fruit of knowledge. It whispers secrets, grants knowledge, offers glimpses of the future. You must go to an orchard, find the oldest tree, the older the tree the more it has seen, the more it knows, the more accurate its reading will be.
Curse Shoes: There are at least twenty single shoes on shelves lining a wall in the Spellman house. These represent each person Zelda has cursed.
Visions:
Bath in the woods: While in the bath, Sabrina has a vision which takes her to the woods where she was born. There she sees Diana and Edward in the grove in the forest, Diana is holding a crying baby we presume to be Sabrina. The parents walk off towards the altar, where they place the baby alongside another. When Sabrina lifts back the blankets off the babies’ feet, one has human feet, the other has cloven.
Malum Malis: Sabrina asks the apple if she should be baptised and when she bites it the apple, the fruit turns entirely to maggots. The vision it shows her is in red and shows ash in the air, burning, and thirteen witches hanging from the tree. The tree trunk then begins to break open and out steps the Dark Lord in his full goat-like form. While Sabrina watches in horror, there is a light behind her that looks like the fires of Hell she summons as Sabrina Morningstar in the Part 3 finale.
Mythology:
Witch Hunters are mentioned as a legitimate and current threat, and witches without covens are considered ‘easy pickings’.
Zelda laments not having had ‘long pig’ for dinner in ages, confirming the coven indulges in cannibalism.
Their coven is called the Church of Night.
The Book of the Beast is the name of the Dark Lord’s Book
‘Dark Lord’ is the church’s name for Lucifer.
Witches have a Witches’ Mark, a spot on their body that does not bleed.
There is a council of witches, simply called the Witches’ Council or The Council for short. Among being a clear source of government within the covens, they also have a registry of familiars. The Familiar Registry is a catalogue for choosing one of the familiars that have been purposefully bred for service to witchkind.
Familiars are goblins who have taken on the shape of animals in order to better serve their witch masters.

No time to think, still seeking Beta Readers for Do Better, so: This reaction tries not to spoil the episode, and gives random reactions in the original Spanish, and in English, for the majority of my current readers: — Por qué Dalí ?? … Why Dalí?? Episode Summary: Sabrina Spellman is about to turn 16, however, on her birthday she must fully embrace her witch half through a dark baptism, where she will pledge loyalty to the Dark Lord. But Sabrina is torn, as she must choose between her friends and her family. Sabrina spends the days leading up to her birthday finding answers to her questions about the ritual. Meanwhile, Sabrina's mortal teacher Mary Wardwell is killed, with Lilith taking her place. She seeks to bring Sabrina over to the Dark Lord's side. Sabrina must also deal with three sister witches known as the Weird Sisters, who look down on her for being a "half-breed".
First Appearances: Sabrina Spellman, Rosalind Walker, Harvey Kinkle, Susie Putnam, Mary Wardwell, Lilith, Zelda Spellman, Hilda Spellman, Ambrose Spellman, Principal Hawthorne, Assistant Principal Glover (mentioned only), Mrs Meeks, Prudence Night, Agatha Night, Dorcas Night, Faustus Blackwood
Music: Bad Moon Rising - CCR, Be My Baby - The Ronettes, I Put a Spell on You - Sylvia Black, Hurdy Gurdy Man - Donovan, Atomic - Blondie
Pop Culture: The film Sabrina, Roz, Harvey and Susie are watching is The Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Deaths: Mary Wardwell; killed by Lilith, via scissors telekinetically thrust into her neck, she bleeds to death in her own cottage. Conner Kemplar; stabbed to death, suspected to be at the hands of Witch Hunters.
Baxter High Antics: Susie is bulled by Billy Marlin and his friends, but the Principal offers no help to the situation, suggesting Susie find another school. Ros and Sabrina form W.I.C.C.A (women’s inter-sectional cultural and creative association) to help battle the bullying and support all women in the school.
Witch Insults: Succubitches
Vocab: Factotum; Lilith refers to Stolas as her faithful factotum. Factotum is an employee who does all kinds of work. Gordian Knot: Lilith refers to Sabrina’s debate as a Gordian Knot. It is a metaphor used to describe a particularly difficult knot. It comes from the legend that Gordius, king of Gordium, tied an intricate knot and prophesied that whoever untied it would become the ruler of Asia. It was cut through with a sword by Alexander the Great.
Random Facts: Vines cover the inside of the walls of the Spellman house as you go up to the attic, which is Ambrose’s room. Despite the 60s aesthetic and implied timeline, Ambrose is show to have a laptop.
Spellman History: The spellmans have been witches for generations and generations. Every Spellman has been a witch. Edward Spellman, Hilda and Zelda’s brother, was almost excommunicated for marrying Sabrina’s mortal Mother, Diana. Ambrose Spellman has been under house arrest for 75 years. Sabrina was born in the grove in Greendale Woods on October 31st.
Edward and Diana: Edward was nearly excommunicated for marrying a mortal. Many despise him for it, including Lilith and the Weird Sisters. Hilda and Zelda say Edward and Diana were flying to Italy for Edward to give a lecture at the Vatican
Familars: Stolas, a raven; belongs to Lilith. Vinegar Tom, a dog (deceased); belongs to Zelda. Spiders; belong to Hilda has spiders. Salem, a black cat; belongs to Sabrina
True Faces: We see Lilith’s original face, the one from the Garden. We also hear her demonic voice which she puts on when talking in anger about Edward Spellman. This is the first and only time we hear Salem’s voice. It is also the first and only time we see his true form, which is a feline-esque goblin.
Times: Midnight is a Witching Hour. A Blood Moon occurs once every 66 years and happens on Sabrina’s birthday this year. Sabrina is born on October 31st. Mary Wardwell is murdered on Monday 27th October.
Sabrina the Teenage Witch References; Sabrina turns on music with a point of her finger, and we hear a ‘sparkling’ magic sound, which was the way all magic worked in the original show. Hilda and Zelda are doing jigsaw puzzles together, with Hilda shoving the wrong pieces together with impatience, something that happened several times on the 90s show.
Relationships: Ambrose is the nephew of Zelda and Hilda, but we do not confirm who his parents are. Sabrina is related to the Aunts via their brother, Edward. Harvey and Sabrina, who are boyfriend and girlfriend, say they love each for the first time. Their best friends are Ros and Susie. Ms Wardwell is declared to be Sabrina’s favourite teacher. Susie is bulled by jocks led by Billy Marlin. Prudence, Agatha and Dorcas are three students known as the Weird Sisters, they are known bullies.
Omens: A black bat smashes through Sabrina’s window and breaks it’s wing, and she kills it by smashing it with a book. It’s stated that a bat coming in through a window could be considered a bad omen.
Reading Materials: Greendale Gazette (read by Zelda), Demonicon (mentioned by Sabrina), Familiar Registry (Council catalogue)

Mary Wardwell: Everyone knows about the witch hunt in Salem but there was one right here in Greendale.1692. Thirteen witches were hung in the forest and their angry spirits have haunted the woods ever since. Lilith: How do you know so much about witches? Mary: Well, I am Greendale’s unofficial town historian, I suppose. (….) Mary: Do you know Sabrina? Lilith: No, but I knew her bastard of a father who broke sacred witch law when he married a mortal sow.
Sabrina: Do you remember at the beginning of the school year what Ms Wardwell told us about Ye Ol’ Greendale? How there were witch trials like in Salem, but no one ever talked about them or wrote about them? There are no gravestones, no monuments…that’s because the witches didnt want anyone to know, so that the coven could keep living in Greendale privately, undisturbed, through the centuries. Prudence: You don’t want what happened to your Mother and Father to happen to you Dorcas: The accident that took their lives Agatha: It would be tragic if a similar one befell you
