Open House - Saturday, August 30

This upcoming Open House will feature origami lessons!

Local origami teacher Shino Yoneda will show you how to create delicate paper sculptures, just by folding!

We have two drop-in time slots available on Saturday, August 30th; 11am - 12pm  1pm - 2pm

There will also be music and complimentary refreshments, and our resource area full of art books is always free to browse. 

So come down, check out Art Lab and learn something new!

Abstract Painting Saturday September 20,  10:30am - Noon

Explore abstract painting and its inspirations. We'll look at contemporary painters' work, like Stephanie Aiken whose work is in Black Diamond Dust at the campus gallery, and experiment with what abstraction means to you. Winter Workshop Preview: January 2015

Forest in a Basket: Coast Salish Cedar Weaving  Saturday January 24 & 31, 10:00-4:00pm

This workshop will take you through the step-by-step process of creating a woven basket using an array of different tree barks. Learn about different natural materials and their properties, and how the cedar tree plays an integral role in the spiritual beliefs and ceremonial life of coastal First Nations while creating a one-of-a-kind basket. At the end of this 2 day workshop you will have created a “forest in a basket” to enjoy and use for years to come! Click here for more info

Open House = Studio Space

We know it's hard to find studio space as a practicing artist in Nanaimo, but that's why we have Open Houses! So come out and use the space TOMORROW, Saturday September 16 from 1-4pm!  Bring a project or two that you are working on and enjoy some complimentary beverages from DavidsTea. We will also have some supplies ready to make artist trading cards, but feel free to bring your own!

Thinking Through Drawing with Jesse Gray Sunday September 28, 10:00-2:00pm

Drawing is many things - a tool for communication, a way to record experiences and articulate ideas, a memory tool, a process, a way of thinking 'out loud', a way of experiencing time. For many of us, drawing is also something of a mystery, and may even be something we avoid or are intimidated by. This workshop will be both a discussion about contemporary drawing and its applications, and an opportunity to experiment with mark-making, non-traditional materials, and working through ideas.  Click here for more info

Saturday Studio: Art Play with Clay Saturday August 16,  10:30 - Noon Ages 5-11

Do you like to 'think' with your hands... while shaping, moulding and playing with clay? That's what this Saturday Studio is all about! We'll look at 3-dimensional artworks from the campus gallery's Reconciling Self | Connie Watts exhibition and get inspired to create. This clay does not require a kiln to dry, so students can sculpt, paint and take home to enjoy!

And afterwards, join us for our Open House from 1:00 - 4:00, for some music, artist trading cards and complimentary beverages!
