Artists & Their Tools 🎨 Personal Observations on AI & Art 🤖
Soon after the release of programs that reconstitute existing digital forms of art into AI-generated "art," tech-savvy people began claiming these were simply "tools" and that they were now artists."
To those who profess that these programs are innocent tools, like a hammer or a paintbrush, let me clarify the misconception with this simple example: As an artist I use paintbrushes. If someone takes my brushes away, I will use a pencil. If someone takes my pencil away I will use crayons. Even without basic art tools I will always find a way to create, even it means smearing pigment with my fingers or drawing lines in the sand at the beach. Why? Because the capacity and drive to create is within me. I've developed it as my professional form of conveying meaningful concepts. Art is intrinsic to my soul.
Now, let's shift over to the tech bros who use AI as their "tool." What happens when we take the programs away? What happens to these "artists"? What becomes of their "art"? Poof! It's gone. It was all a trick. When the tool does all of the work, it's not actually a tool. That's why these people aren't "artists" and AI isn't a "tool." It's all a soulless simulation of art and creativity. It's techno-capitalist deception. It's important to the well-being of culture to understand the difference.
Please feel free to pass this along during your next conversation about art in the world today.

I had the nicest day today! The Frederick Co MD, Scott Key Center brought a group to our farm. The weather was a bit snowy and rainy outside, so we did a really fun fiber art project inside! We made needle felted pendants. (Kits called Finn & Osin are on the table.) I used to be a public school art teacher and it really reminded me of how much I enjoy teaching. It definitely made me happy that everyone had a good time! #avalonspringsfarm #Frederickcomd #ScottKeyCenter #needlefelting #Fiberart #Community #Communitymatters #arteducation #fiberartactivities (at Avalon Springs Farm) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cpni-OmpYqM/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Art History and AI: Art, Christianity and Creating The Nativity
Seasons Greetings!
The intersection of art, religion, and education is a powerful avenue for conveying biblical lessons and Christian doctrines through social media platforms. This dynamic medium allows for the exploration of how art not only depicts religious narratives but also plays a significant role in shaping and communicating Christian beliefs. Various Christian doctrines advocate for art as a means of divine expression; for example, the doctrine of the Incarnation embodies the belief that God became flesh through Jesus Christ, suggesting that visual representations of Christ can be beneficial aids to worship and devotion. The ability of art to educate, inspire, and foster faith makes it an essential tool for both artists and educators in modern contexts.
Art and artists have significantly influenced Christian doctrines on creativity and expression. From the early centuries of Christianity, artworks played a critical role in illustrating biblical narratives, which were especially important for largely illiterate congregations. Artists such as Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci crafted masterpieces like "The Last Supper" and the Sistine Chapel ceiling, both of which invite deep theological reflection and discussion surrounding the nature of faith and spirituality. These representations became more than mere aesthetics; they were instrumental in communicating complex religious ideas and fostering a deeper understanding of Christian teachings through visual storytelling.
Moreover, artworks concerning the Nativity have profoundly influenced both religious and secular Christmas imagery and traditions. The Nativity story, vividly depicted in numerous artistic forms, establishes foundational elements that have seeped into popular culture—elements such as the presence of Mary, Joseph, the stable, and the Christ child surrounded by shepherds and wise men. The tradition of displaying Nativity scenes, initiated by Saint Francis of Assisi, set the stage for how Christmas is celebrated and visualized, intertwining both the religious aspect of the holiday and its secular transactions. Over time, Christmas iconography underwent a transformation, incorporating non-Christian elements, which enriched the narrative and provided broader cultural resonance.
Additionally, key details, symbols, and colors are essential for artists creating Nativity and religious Christmas imagery. Important details include the demeanor of the Holy Family, the simplicity of the manger, and the essential roles played by accompanying figures such as angels and the Magi. Symbols like the Star of Bethlehem signify divine guidance, while colors such as blue (representing Mary’s purity), gold (symbolizing divinity), and white (indicative of innocence) establish the emotional and spiritual atmosphere of the Nativity artwork. Artists must weave these elements into their depictions to accurately reflect the rich theology underlying the Nativity narrative.
Art movements like Impressionism, Surrealism, Art Deco, Modernism, and Post-Modernism have also left indelible marks on the appearance and reception of Nativity artworks. Impressionism's emphasis on light and immediate impressions brought a fresh perspective to traditional scenes, making them more relatable and intimate, while Surrealism challenged conventional representations with dreamlike imagery that provoked deeper contemplation of faith. Art Deco introduced modern elegance and geometric designs, reshaping the visual culture surrounding the Nativity, while Modernism focused on abstraction and simplification. Finally, Post-Modernism's deconstruction of narratives prompted artists to engage with religious themes in ways that questioned established norms, fostering dialogue around the relevance of faith in contemporary society.
For artists utilizing generative AI to create Nativity and religious Christmas imagery, key words play a crucial role in shaping their prompts. Focusing on emotional and spiritual themes is essential; for instance, incorporating terms like "radiant," "sacred," and "intimate" can help guide AI in generating impactful images that resonate with viewers. Additionally, artists should consider including time periods and styles such as "Impressionism," "Surrealism," or "Modernism" to refine their outputs and align them with specific artistic movements. By harnessing these keywords and concepts, creators can enhance their engagement with both traditional narratives and contemporary artistic expressions in the realm of Nativity art.
Artist Statement: AI Generated images, inspired by the Depression era work of Dorothea Lange. These images, based on the images from the story, Biblical and Secular, of the Christmas Nativity, place the tale in the Deep South during the Great Depression and are titled based on traditional carols. Understanding the Complex Relationship Between Illustration and Art in 3D Mediums
Illustration: Expert Q&A Guide
1.Is 3D art an illustration?
3D art is a form of illustration, adding depth through digital models or animations. It serves storytelling and visual communication in fields like video games, films, and advertising, enhancing the artistic experience through conveying ideas visually.
2. Is illustration art or design?
Illustration is both art and design. As art, it focuses on creativity, emotion, and style, often in fine art settings. As design, it serves a functional purpose, conveying information in advertising, publishing, and branding. Art emphasizes expression, while design stresses usability. Illustration combines both, blending elements of art and design.
3. What is commercial illustration?
Commercial illustration is art created for commercial purposes like advertising, marketing, packaging, and publishing. It includes digital and traditional styles and media. Illustrators collaborate with clients to convey messages, strengthen brand identity, and attract consumers with appealing visuals. Common uses are editorial illustrations, product designs, book covers, and promotions. The main aim is to communicate ideas effectively and engage audiences, prioritizing functionality over aesthetics.
4. What is illustration vs drawing?
Illustration and drawing are similar yet separate. Drawing is making images with pencils, ink, or charcoal, focusing on skill. It can be representational or abstract. On the contrary, illustration is a visual representation to enhance text, often in books or ads. Illustrations are narrative and purposeful, while drawings can standalone. Essentially, all illustrations include drawing, but not all drawings are illustrations.
5. What is a illustration example?
An illustration example clarifies concepts, ideas, or arguments. For instance, discussing teamwork can be shown through a story of a successful diverse group project leading to innovative solutions. This helps understand the concept practically.

Art Education Blog Post FA 24
Jennifer Hernandez
Professor Marissa Gutirrez
ART 15500
Class Blog
Hello everyone !
Just want to preface by saying, I came in to this class disliking art and thinking this class was boring. However, taking this art course has changed my perception and belief in art, this class has brought me a new light. A memorable experience in this art education course took place in the first few weeks of the semester commencement. This class activity broke me into an art fanatic, the activity was the creation of our “me” collage boards. The activity directions was to use a selection of provided magazines and art supplies and create a collage that represents you. As mentioned before, this class activity took place within the first few weeks of the semester starting so the ultimate goal was to allow our classmates to know more about us. The goal was simple and yet hard to capture with the limited magazine options, it made way for a creative and optimal mindset.
The process of flipping through magazines and having some sort of goal was where the creative process started. The creative adaptation I endured and made up was a result of our limited magazine selections; we were given dental, art, and advertisement magazines. While the magazines offered a wide variety of images, it was ultimately up to us to capture ourselves through these columns. I captured myself through advertisements and backgrounds to tell others about me. I was able to capture my love for nature through a cologne’s tree background and my love for solitude through a random art painting. I enjoyed everything about this activity because of the creative freedom we were given and the challenge it provided. I enjoyed the activity so much, I loved the collage so much, it is now pasted on my wall because it indeed represents me.
Throughout the class we learned about all different types of artists who helped revolutionize in one way. One of the artists that captivated me was Kehinde Wiley. Despite his recent controversies, I felt the strong cause for his art creation; he recreates famous paintings by including POC’s in these paintings. His cause is inspiring because it brings light to the lack of diverse representation and social inequality faced during these times. Wiley also makes an emphasis to include women of color as well, he points out the image that women of color is almost non-existent and therefore uses his paintings as a form of representation. The paintings portray a new reality with its vibrant colors and diverse representation helping depict a new modern time reality. Wiley’s artwork is a revolutionary arc that allows for a representation for people of color. Including and re-inventing these famous paintings with POC, allows them to feel seen and understood.
Kehinde Wiley's Paintings
As mentioned before, taking this art education has helped change my view on art. I never believed art as a form of therapy but through the multiple activities and lessons, I found a new care for it. An honorable mention in activity that has been added to my mindfulness activities is an activity we did when the professor felt our energy low. We took a blank piece of paper, drew a rectangle and made squiggles to essentially create a coloring page for us. I enjoyed this activity so much because it alleviated the stress I was feeling that day and all I needed was pen and paper. I truly felt like an artist that day and I was so proud of my work so my perspective on art has changed completely; despite my failure to see myself as an artist.
