Hey everyone! I thought that I’d start sharing some facts about the Coast Salish people and their religious beliefs this way so that maybe I can have a wider net for my religious literacy projects, so here we go! Today, I thought I’d share a ritual known to the Coast Salish people as the First Salmon ceremony, where they honor the first salmon caught in salmon season. According to their sacred stories, the first salmon to arrive is the king of the salmon, who is to be treated as an honored guest. They will show him gratitude and respect for his sacrifice before eating him and sending his remains back up the river, where he will return to his kingdom. From his bones, he will regenerate and encourage the other salmon to travel the path and provide for those who treated him well. This is a ceremony that the Coast Salish have been bringing back after generations of dealing with their religious practices outlawed and the overfishing of salmon, and it’s really cool. In the early ‘70’s during breaks from school, I hitch-hiked across the US and up into Canada. The Viet Nam War defined my life and allowed me to see how powerful The State was. Avoiding the military became an act of conscience, and Canada offered sanctuary to the husband of my best friend’s older sister, who settled on a small island in British Columbia. They lived in a house that had been built and abandoned by a Japanese Canadian family who were interned in World War Two. This was my first glimpse into an aspect of Canada’s past that made me understand no country is infallible. The confirmation in the last few weeks of unmarked graves at the sites of Residential Indigenous Schools adds to the heartbreak. This was my first attempt at an entire inquiry unit. I've had experience using provocations before to evoke interest, but not a unit that was completely student directed. These Coast Salish artifacts were generously donated to the North Vancouver School District and were a great preview before my grade 3s went to the Big House!
