Chapter 7: Let's Find Comfort In Each Other
⧫ ⧫ ⧫ Rauna POV ⧫ ⧫ ⧫
As I stepped out of my tent, a gust of wind greeted me. My hair, still down from the previous night, flailed around me. I started gathering my hair to one side so I could see and not taste hair in my mouth. Glancing over, Snufkin was walking toward me.
“Morning, Snufkin,” I said. “Nice day, isn’t it?”
Amused, Snufkin looked up at the stormy clouds rolling in. Flashes of lightning lit up the sky, and the rumble of thunder spread across Moominvalley.
“…Yes. A nice day indeed. Good morning.” He smiled.
The clouds were coming in fast. We need to pack up quickly, or we’ll get drenched by the rain and I just took a bath last night. I don’t want to take another…
“Snufkin, can you help me pack up my tent? I'll help you pack yours too, it’ll be faster.”
“Sure. Let’s hurry before it starts raining cats and dogs.”
The wind certainly didn’t make packing up two tents any easier, but we finished quickly. Things packed, we headed to Moominhouse.
Just as we crossed the bridge, thunder as loud as a cymbal crashed above us, and rain rushed from the sky.
“Let’s go!” I yelled over the rain. Taking Snufkin’s hand, we ran for the safety of the porch. The rain pounded relentlessly, drenching us. Lightning cracked across the sky. My heart was beating out of my chest as we ran towards Moominhouse. Snufkin’s hand, which I held securely, sent warmth through the palm of my hand, a stark comparison to the chilly rain.
By the time we reached the safety of the porch, rain was dripping off the ends of our clothes. Moominmamma opened the door as soon as we stepped onto the porch, warm towels in hand.
“Morning, Moominmamma,” I feel like I’m always wet whenever I come here… Last time, I went for a little swim in the waterfall. This time, I took a shower in the rain…
“Good morning, Moominmamma.” Snufkin greeted.
“Good morning, it’s nice to have you back.” She said with a smile. “Good morning to you too, Snufkin.” Moominmamma’s gaze, towels in hand, drifted down.
Hm? Following her gaze… My face flushed with embarrassment. Without a word, I let go of Snufkin’s hand and reached to take one of the fluffy towels.
“Everyone’s inside. The both of you can come in whenever you’re ready. Oh, and Rauna," she turned to me, "I have some clothes you can try on that might just fit. We wouldn’t want you to catch a cold. Snufkin was lucky, his hat helped keep him mostly dry.”
“Ah, yes. Thank you, Moominmamma. I’ll come inside once I dry myself a bit. I wouldn't want to drip water all over your floors.” Moominmamma nodded and went inside.
I should take my cloak off. Wouldn't do any good sitting in wet clothes. Putting my things down, the surface of my violin case was wet. I frowned. Of course, it was unavoidable as a vagabond, but that didn’t mean I liked it. Instead of drying myself, I used my towel to dry the case.
⧫ ⧫ ⧫ Snufkin POV ⧫ ⧫ ⧫
After Rauna took off her cloak, it was easy to spot bandages wrapped around her upper arm. Instead of taking care of herself, she started drying her violin case. I’m not too wet, so this should be okay. I placed my towel over Rauna’s shoulders, and she froze as if remembering my presence.
“When did you get hurt?” I asked. She looked up at me.
“Hm? Oh.” She looked down at her bandaged arm. “I took a little tumble on my way back yesterday and there was a branch. It's not as bad as you think.” She unraveled some of the gauze so I could take a look.
I looked closely at the long, yet shallow cut. It was still pink around the edges but otherwise healthy.
“Not bad. Will you still be able to play the violin?”
Holding onto the towel around her shoulders, she got up. “It should be fine. Something like this hasn’t stopped me before, and it won’t stop me now,” she reached for the handle before turning back to me. “You coming?”
“At some point. I want to watch the storm come on.” I said.
She nodded and went inside. Even with the closed door, I could hear everyone inside become excited at Rauna’s return from the open window. I guess Moominmamma didn’t tell them about Rauna coming back.

I twirled in front of the mirror. The change of clothes Moominmamma gave me was…a dress. The soft, sky-blue fabric rippled like water. I smoothed down the skirt, not that it needed to be smoothed, but to feel it under my fingertips. I haven’t worn a dress in ages… Did Moominmamma really just have this lying around? It fits so well and looks new.
The short sleeves weren’t something I was too used to, but it was okay. The length, however… Coming down a bit past my knees, it was the shortest piece of clothing I’ve worn. Exhaling, I decided I couldn’t stay in the guest room all day.
Heading downstairs, rain was still thrumming against the house. I was relieved that no one paid mind to my out-of-character attire. Most likely Moominmamma’s work. I need to thank her later.
Walking into the foyer, the rain transitioned into a melody. Music. An old record player sat on the table. It looked like it'd break at any moment but played as strong as ever.
“Will you dance with us, Rauna?” Moominmamma asked, in the middle of dancing with Moominpappa.
“I don't know…” It has been so long since I did these things, worn a dress and danced. I sat on the sofa, the open window letting in a nice breeze behind me.
Moomin and Snorkmaiden were nearly a replica of Moomin’s parents, but stumbled from time to time, giggling. They're so cute together. Sniff and Little My were also dancing together. The height difference made the dance…unique. But they looked like they were having fun.
As the song came to an end and jumped to another, I glanced out to the porch. Snufkin was lounging on the railing. He looked over the valley, rain steadily falling.
⧫ ⧫ ⧫
[Violino (From "Amore mio aiutami") By Piero Piccioni]
Closing the door behind me, the new song drifted out the window.
“Still raining pretty heavily, isn’t it?” I asked, looking out at the rainy scene. Snufkin jumped down and leaned against the railing next to me.
“Yes… It’s really coming down.” We stood in silence for a few minutes, listening to the rain, the music, and each other’s presence.
“You’re wearing a dress,” Snufkin commented without looking away from the rainy scene before us.
“Yeah. Moominmamma gave it to me while my clothes dry... It’s been a while since I wore a dress. Not too practical when traveling, y’know?”
“I can guess. Would be hard to do most things without it snagging, or ripping.”
I nodded, then turned to him.
“Do you dance?” I asked.
“A little, I suppose. You?” He turned to look at me.
“A bit.”
“…”
“…”
“Do you want to dance?” Snufkin asked.
“Alone? Not at all. With a partner? I could.” Is he going to offer a dance?
“Then…” He pushed himself off the railing and stood in front of me, bowing lightly. “Will you accept this dance?”
Oh.
“Yeah,” I smiled. Taking his outreached hand, we stepped together. His hand was warm and calloused, I could feel some small cuts too. Maybe from fishing, pulling out the hooks, or life itself.
“Is it okay if I put my hand on your back?” Snufkin asked. Definitely forgot about that part of dancing with someone.
“Yeah, it’s okay. Thanks for asking.”
He nodded, lightly settling a hand on my back, and our hands held in each other. With music from the window, we slowly stepped and swayed to the music.
“…have you danced before? Before today, I mean.” Snufkin asked.
“I have. Not like this though. This style of dance, or with a partner I mean,” I added. “Curious?” I smiled. He cleared his throat and looked away.
“I’d be lying if I said no. But,” he looked at me. “Don’t feel like you need to tell me anything if you don’t want to.”
“Thanks, I'm okay." I smiled. "You know how I told you about the old man who gave me my violin?”
He nodded.
“Some nights, when he’d play the violin, I would dance. It was fun,” I smiled. “The dances were different there, compared to Moominvalley.” I paused, thinking of those distant memories, a distant past.
⧫ ⧫ ⧫ Snufkin’s POV ⧫ ⧫ ⧫
Rauna had gone silent, thinking deeply of something. We danced silently, and the rain began to slow. I paused, looking up at the sky.
“The rain is stopping,” I whispered.
Rauna looked up, “oh, you’re right.”
The sun’s rays broke through the clouds, raindrops trickling off the porch roof.
⧫ ⧫ ⧫
⧫ ⧫ ⧫ Rauna's POV ⧫ ⧫ ⧫
The rain had completely stopped, and the group decided to go to the Forest of Witches, bringing baskets for mushroom picking. Little My and Sniff were competing, running around, and throwing all sorts of mushrooms into their baskets. I walked alongside Snorkmaiden, Moomin, and Snufkin, baskets in hand. Snorkmaiden and Moomin told me about the Forest of Witches, Alicia, her grandmother, how they met, and how she was an official witch now. I grabbed mushrooms occasionally along the way so I wouldn't bring back an empty basket.
I wonder how many of Little My's and Sniff's mushrooms are edible... I mused.
I glanced over at Snufkin who was walking next to me. He was focused on the next topic Snorkmaiden and Moomin had moved onto. I tapped his hand to get his attention. His eyes flickered down to my hand, lingering close to his, then quickly up to my gaze. You could practically see the question mark on his face.
"How many of those do you think we'll get to eat?" I discreetly gestured at Sniff's and Little My's rapid mushroom-picking tactic.
He grinned and leaned in a little to whisper back.
"Knowing them... Probably not many."
I hid my laughter behind my hand.
"What are you two whispering and laughing about~?" Snorkmaiden looked at us, a teasing glint in her eyes. I cleared my throat.
"Mhm- oh, is that the witches' hut over there?" I asked.
"It's the witch!" Little My yelled.
Standing outside, The Witch was about to swing her leg over her broom when we came up to her.
"Good morning, is Alicia in?" Moomin asked.
"No she's out and busy, so don't bother her." The Witch said in a rough tone.
"That's unfortunate... Maybe we'll bump into her in the forest," Moomin said.
As if noticing a new presence, The Witch looked straight at me.
"And who is this child?"
"Nice to meet you, Madame Witch. My name is Rauna." I introduced myself.
She hummed as she looked me over closely. Her bright yellow eyes held knowledge and speculations.
"Where are you from?"
Why is she asking so many questions... I shifted uncomfortably.
"I'm a vagabond, I'm not from anywhere in particular. But it's a long way away," I told her.
She nodded without a word and hopped onto her broom. With a last glance, she flew up and over the trees. The group looked at each other, puzzled.
I felt a familiar hand squeeze mine.
"You alright?" Snufkin quietly asked me.
I exhaled, "I'm okay. That was weird though. Is she always like that when meeting someone for the first time?"
"No...she's weird but not that weird."
"Oh fun. Am I being targeted by a witch now?" I joked.
Snufkin looked at me sympathetically, lightly squeezing my hand one last time before letting go as Little My's voice cut through our whispers.
"Oh well, let's see if we can find Alicia!" Little My said, starting to walk ahead again.
"She should be somewhere around here," Snorkmaiden commented. "Alicia! Are you there!?" She called out.
"Aliciaaaaa!" Little My yelled.
"Alicia! Where are you!??" Moomin joined.
We called for Alicia as we walked into the forest, leaving our mushroom baskets at the hut.
"Wait- do you guys hear that?" I shushed the group.
A foreign voice called back from a little deeper in the forest, "Over here! I'm near the stream!"
"That's Alicia! Let's go!" Little My ran full speed ahead.
"Wait for meeeee!" Sniff ran after her, trying to catch up.
⧫ ⧫ ⧫
"Alicia! It's been a while!" Moomin greeted her. Noticing the basket next to her feet, he peered into it. "What are you doing? Picking ingredients?"
"It's good to see you all! That's right, Grandma wanted me to restock a few things while she's out," she looked over at me and smiled. "Hello! I'm Alicia, a witch." She reached out a hand.
"Nice to meet you," I shook her hand. "I'm Rauna, a vagabond." How is this nice girl related to such a... I don't even know what to call her...weird? Grandmother.
"What's that?" Little My pointed to one of the things in Alicia's basket.
"Is it edible?" Sniff asked, before coming closer to take a look.
"Oh, no, you can't eat that," she laughed. "I just harvested some fresh bark, so I was washing my hands in the stream."
I took a look in the basket. The bark was oak and willow tree, good choices for medicinal purposes. Some licorice, the eye of newt in a jar, and a bundle of toe of frog.
"Is that licorice?" Snufkin asked, peering over my shoulder.
"That's right, Snufkin!" Alicia smiled.
"Are you done gathering all this stuff?" Little My asked, already impatient.
"I need to grab some valerian root and then I'm all free."
"We could help you," I offered.
"That's right, we could finish quickly and go down to Moominvalley," Moomin added.
"That's nice of you guys, thank you! You'll be able to find it pretty easily. The flowers are white, sometimes pink." She points out the plant in the near distance. Since it grows in small bunches, there was enough for a few people to dig up. "That's the valerian plant, we just need the roots."
Alicia, Sniff, and Snorkmaiden began digging up the bunch while the rest of us went searching for another bunch. Little My ran ahead with Moomin as Snufkin and I canvassed the area slowly.
"Do you see any?" I asked.
"No, do you?"
"No...," I pointed off course. "Let's try over there. Looks like there's a clearing."
"Sounds good to me, let's go."
We walked into the clearance and thankfully found some valerian plants to dig up. I grabbed a stick to dig up my plant while Snufkin grabbed a flat rock.
"...are you going to do anything else with your day?" I asked Snufkin. He thought about it for a second.
"Probably fishing. See if anything bites after such a storm."
I nodded.
"How about you?" He added.
"Hmm...," I thought, freeing the plant from the soil. "I think I'll go down to the beach. I think I remember seeing a cave, I want to check it out." I lightly shook the plant and the soil loosened from around its roots.
"I remember that cave. I won't spoil it for you, but...there's a nice surprise in one of the side caverns. Follow the right wall and you'll get there."
"I'll keep that in mind, thank you."
Roots in hand, we returned to the Witches' hut to find everyone putting their roots into Alicia's basket.
"There you are," Moomin looked at us.
"I'm all done now. I have some time before Grandma comes back," Alicia said, brushing the dirt off her hands.
"Let's go down for lunch, I'm hungry." Sniff grumbled, rubbing his stomach.
"Oh, I haven't had Moominmamma's pancakes in months..." Alicia was practically salivating at the thought.
⧫ ⧫ ⧫
Sitting at the table, the sweet smell of Moominmamma's pancakes filled the room. It's like torture sitting here with those pancakes all the way over there... I was staring at the fluffy pancakes when a soft chuckle broke my concentration.
"What?" I whispered, side-eyeing Snufkin.
"Nothing." His hand covered half of his mouth.
"As if I believe that." I stealthily poked his side and he jolted a little. I grinned when he glared at me with no real fire behind it.
"Oh look at all these mushrooms! You all have picked so many!" Moominmamma clasped her hands together. "Now, let's see how many are edible... Hmm, this basket looks very nice, everything can be eaten. Whose basket is this?"
"Ah, that one would be mine," I raised my hand.
"Nice job, Rauna!"
"HEY! That's not fair! I got WAY more mushrooms in my basket!" Little My pouted, crossing her arms.
"That's true... But Little My, you also picked a lot of mushrooms that could make someone very very sick. It's important to learn what is safe to eat."
All I want is to sink my teeth into those pancakes... I sighed, resting my head in my hands. I could practically feel the silent laughter coming off of Snufkin. I gently nudged his foot with mine. Oh shut it. I'm hungry.
⧫ ⧫ ⧫
Finally! I put down my knife and fork in satisfaction, full on Moominmamma's delicious pancakes.
"Happy?" Snufkin whispers, amusement twinkling in his eyes.
"What? Am I too obvious?"
He shook his head, and stood up, walking toward the door.
"Leaving, Snufkin?" Moomin asked. I stood up as well.
"Yep, I'm gonna go fishing."
"And I...am going for a beachside walk," I added, heading toward the door as well.
"Have fun! We're going to play some games," Snorkmaiden called out.
Why do I feel like she's been watching me and Snufkin so much? I thought, closing the door behind us.
Walking together, the sun still showed about 3 hours of daylight left.
"Today is going pretty quick," I say. "And yet... it feels like so much has happened."
Snufkin nodded, showing that he was listening.
"Also, don't you think Snorkmaiden has been kinda...weird today?"
"Weird how?" Snufkin asked.
"Her smile, as if she knows something I- or we- don't."
"Hmm... Yeah, I have a slight feeling about what it's about. But don't worry," He quickly adds. "It's nothing bad."
"...okay. I'm trusting you here, you know her more than I do." I warn him.
"Mhm."
⧫ ⧫ ⧫
Reaching our tents, Snufkin went into his tent to grab his fishing rod and settled down by the stream. He pulled his green hat over his face, comfortably settling down.
"See ya, Snufkin. I'll be back before sundown," I waved.
Snufkin briefly lifted his hat to tilt his hat at me, which I couldn't help but smile at.
⧫ ⧫ ⧫
The waves were crashing, and the salty wind came and went. Walking in the direction of the cave, I was curious to see what surprise Snufkin was talking about.
Walking into the cave, I ran my hand along the right wall. Walking in a good amount, the dripping of water was in the distance. The rain most likely leaked in somewhere.
*Click*
"What was that," I whispered to myself. A couple of sharp sounds seemed to tumble from outside the cave. I stood silently, trying to hear what was going on outside. The loud rumble and clattering of countless loose rocks, small and large in sound, tumbled down the side of the cave and in front of the entrance.
"..." I sighed. "...are you kidding me?" I stood there for a minute or so, looking in the direction of the closed entrance, then nodded to myself.
"Alright. Fine, I guess it's fate. There should be an exit somewhere, and I'll go see that surprise Snufkin was talking about."
Keeping my hand on the right wall, I walked onward. The grooves in the wall lightly scratched at my palm. A cold draft blew over my face, that must be the direction of the exit. The longer I walked, the colder the air became. I wish I had my cloak... I do like this dress, but it doesn't give any warmth. I shivered, rubbing my arms. The path began to slightly slope down, and I could see a faint light in the distance. Closer, and closer to the light, I could start making out what the surprise was.
"oh wow..." I exhaled. The cyan Kyanite crystals shimmered and lit up the corners. "...beautiful."
Mesmerized, I walked deeper into the fantastic cavern. I spun around the large chamber, taking in the brilliant view, my dress flaring out as I spun.
⧫ ⧫ ⧫
I don't know how long I sat staring at the glittering crystals around me, but I had stopped feeling cold long ago. Staring up at the cavern ceiling, it was as though I was looking up at the night sky. I closed my eyes.

Chapter 6 Pt.2: Coming Back - "When Spring Comes, We'll Meet Again" (2 Drawings!)
⥈ Day 4 ⥈
[Fog (My Pinterest Link)]
⧫ ⧫ ⧫ Rauna POV ⧫ ⧫ ⧫
I walked half a day back, and the early hours of the next day plunged the forest into darkness. Being closer to Moominvalley than to the extreme depths of the forest, the light catching the attention of the wild animals wasn't a concern. I let the light lead my way.
⧫ ⧫ ⧫
A quiet stillness had wrapped itself around me. The ever so often rustle of a bush or scampering of a rodent had stilled. The darkness of the corners of the forest was impenetrable with my small lantern. Pausing, I stared into the darkness. A shiver crawled up my spine, and my hair stood on end as something moved around my feet.
Cautiously, I lowered my lantern. My body was frozen in anticipation of what I'd see. Yet, instead of creatures of the night, a thick fog had trickled in from behind.
Not too dangerous this time. I thought with a sigh of relief. The fog was rolling in quicker than I thought. Like a tidal wave, I was soon covered in the ghostly fog.
Staying in one place during such a fog would’ve been the safest bet, if not for the severe storm on my tail. I can't afford to stop now. Lantern outstretched, I moved on.
⧫ ⧫ ⧫
How long have I been walking now? Ten minutes? Twenty? Or only five? Nothing seemed to make sense. The cold front bringing in the fog and storm chilled my bones. I never did like the cold.
I should be closer to Moominvalley, but I can't see the valley entrance... Should I wait out the fog and bear the brunt of the storm? Or try to find the valley anyway, even when I can't see the back of my hand…
A rumble under my feet snapped me out of my thoughts. I collapsed to the ground. An earthquake?? No, no, that doesn't seem right.
In the stillness, I was frozen in shock. My heart beating fast.
*cRaCk*
The ground fell away from under me, I was free-falling.
"Aaaaah!!!!" I grasped at anything I could. Losing my lantern in the process, darkness enveloped me. I was tumbling down to who knows where.
Wrapping my arms around my head, I had no way of stopping my fall. Rocks and small twigs on the ground dug into my body. A searing pain shot up my right arm.
I had hit the bottom. Unlucky for me I had caught myself on a sharp branch in the last moment.
With closed eyes, I lay there breathless. Pressing against the cut, it felt wet to the touch. Yep. Definitely bleeding. I sighed. I was so close to being back in Moominvalley too...
I'll need to make a fire so I can see the damage. It might be okay with antibiotic herbal pulp and bandaging... It'll take time if I need stitches or to cauterize the wound. I got up, still holding onto my arm.
I had fallen into a small clearing. Being ahead of the storm, the twigs, leaves, and other materials I needed to make a fire were dry. I slowly made a good-sized fire.
Looking at my wound in front of the light, it wasn’t as bad as I feared. It's good that I carry an emergency kit. I took fabric from my bag to wet to clean the blood. Crushing some Calendula, I applied it as a paste to stop any possibility of infection and wrapped myself up. At least I didn't need any stitches.
⧫ ⧫ ⧫
I sat before the crackling fire, resting. I reached up towards my neck, drawing out a chain. Attached to it is my locket. Usually hidden by my clothes, the locket swayed like a pendulum. The orange-red flames cast a glow on the reflective surface. Pressing a thumb against its lid, I could feel the indents of an engraving taking shape.
Taking my eyes off the engraving, I stared at the flames as they danced, fiddling with the clasp.
*Click*
Exhaling, I looked down into the open locket, tapping a slow rhythm against its outside. The sound of the crackling flames faded into the background, the flames still dancing in my mind.
The left side contained a darkened scrap of material, and on the right, a picture of a lady around her 30s. Her blonde hair pulled up in a bun, strands framing her soft expression. The hint of a smile seemed to tug at the corner of her lips.
[Locket (My Pinterest Link)]
The crackling flames crackled louder, accompanied by stirring winds. The fire had turned into a brilliant red-blue, dancing like fiery waves. The flames jumped higher and higher as if to touch the star-speckled night sky.
*Click*
And with the click, it all fell apart. As if nothing ever happened, the wind had ceased.
⧫ ⧫ ⧫
⥈ Day 5: Back In Moominvalley (Night) ⥈
⧫ ⧫ ⧫ Rauna POV ⧫ ⧫ ⧫
I had already walked into the valley, as the new day was ending. In my hurry to get back, I didn’t notice the storm slowing. Enough time to comfortably check out that hot spring Snufkin talked about a while ago and clean up. I thought to myself. Traveling for about five days, I wanted to wash up before seeing anyone.
Taking a detour, I walked past the waterfall to find the hot springs. After walking for about 10 minutes, the gurgling water guided me to the springs.
"Oh, this is gonna be perfect." I sighed.
⧫ ⧫ ⧫
Walking back to the campsite, Moominhouse was still awake. The warm light trickled from the windows, still visible from a distance as I approached my tent. The fireplace had started to dwindle with no one to tend to it since hours had passed. Glancing at it, I turned and put my violin and emergency kit into my tent. Shame about the lantern… I’ll have to make another one. Sitting down at the campsite, I threw some sticks into the flames.
⧫ ⧫ ⧫ Snufkin POV ⧫ ⧫ ⧫
I left Moominhouse after joining them for dinner, not staying for tea. Walking closer to the campsite, I noticed the fire hadn’t died. A figure sat before the flames. I smiled.
⧫ ⧫ ⧫ Rauna POV ⧫ ⧫ ⧫
Movement in my peripheral vision snapped me out of my thoughts.
"Snufkin." I smiled, looking up at him. "Been a while, hasn't it?"
"Sure has." Snufkin took a seat with me near the fire.
My long hair was still wet at its ends, dripping onto the shirt I used as my night clothes. I closed my eyes, letting the warmth of the fire come in waves.
"Will you have some tea?" Snufkins soft voice drifted with the warm waves.
"Hmm... I think I'm alright, thank you." I thought of the last couple of days. It was a nice getaway, but at the same time... did I even rest...? I laughed a little to myself. Snufkin looked up curiously. I shook my head.
I looked up at the sky. “When do you think the storm is going to hit? I got back just in time to not get caught in it. Do you think we’ll be lucky not to wake up in a flooded tent?” I joked.
Snufkin looked up at the sky, his nose twitching slightly, taking in the scent of the air.
“I think we’ll be okay. It might hit sometime in the morning after we usually wake up.” As vagabonds, we were used to sleeping late and waking early.
I nodded. “It definitely slowed down. If it continued at the same speed, it would’ve hit just after we would’ve fallen asleep…”
Snufkin hummed, poking at the fire with a stick. Sparks flew up from the flames like dangerous confetti.
"Well, I'm gonna go to bed. It's been a long day." Standing up, I walked to my tent. Pausing at the entrance, I looked over my shoulder. "Good night, Snufkin."
⧫ ⧫ ⧫ Snufkin POV ⧫ ⧫ ⧫
As Rauna reached up to open the entry of her tent, her shirt dipped from the movement. It exposed a little of her shoulder. Even with the dim lighting, the flames brought to light freeze burns. They spanned across her shoulder and under her shirt, ending who knows where.
"...Good night, Rauna," I whispered.
Even I had scars and injuries from my travels. But…this felt a bit different. Discomfort spread in my heart. Frowning, I rubbed my heart. I never liked seeing a friend being hurt. Even if it happened in the past.

Chapter 6 Pt.1: Traveling - "When Spring Comes, We'll Meet Again"
⧫ ⧫ ⧫ Rauna POV ⧫ ⧫ ⧫
I didn’t sleep well, as I had predicted mere hours before. Nausea stirred in my stomach. I needed some fresh air. I opened the flap to the tent. The weak light filtered inside, casting an orange glow. Clear skies... It doesn’t smell like it’s going to rain today.
Any day can be a good day for a trip. I packed some food, a homemade emergency kit, a lantern- just in case, I thought- and my violin.
⧫ ⧫ ⧫ Snufkin POV ⧫ ⧫ ⧫
Twilight broke as rustling woke me from my light sleep. With a yawn, I closed my eyes again.
⧫ ⧫ ⧫ Rauna POV ⧫ ⧫ ⧫
Midway through the forest, an unusual rustle snapped me out of my dazed state.
"...huh?" A drowsy Stinky popped his head out of a large rock pile.
"Where are you going so early in the morning? Sun's barely-" yAwN, "...up." Stinky, even when tired, was too nosey of an imp to even let a drop of suspicion pass him by.
"On a short adventure, I'll be back. See ya, Stinky." I replied, giving no other details.
"Yeah, yeah, see ya,” Stinky replied, not really believing me but too tired to care. “Vagabonds, always itching to get somewhere..." he muttered, half-asleep, slipping back into his rocky home.
He has truth in those words. I shrugged.
⧫ ⧫ ⧫
After almost two hours, I reached the outskirts of Moominvalley. Standing on the edge of the overlooking mountain cliff, peering down. Moominhouse sat in the far distance, its bright red top a beacon amongst the green of the valley. A lighthouse.
I imagined what Moomin and the others would do today. Where they’d explore, who they’d encounter, and the things they’d see. But, even with my curiosity, I turned away with a light heart.

⥈ Day 1: Morning. Moominvalley ⥈
⧫ ⧫ ⧫ Snufkin POV ⧫ ⧫ ⧫
“Snufkin! Snufkin!”
Moomin's voice rang out as he ran toward me. I had been lying at the bank of the stream, hiding in the shade of my green hat as I fished.
“Morning Moomin. Pleasant day, isn't it?” I said, lifting my hat slightly off my face in greeting.
“Yes, the weather is quite nice. But...where’s Rauna? I didn’t see her in the house or in her tent. ” Moomin asked, looking around.
“Not sure. Out somewhere, I suppose."
Glancing past Moomin’s head, Little My and Snorkmaiden were running towards us, and behind them, Sniff. The whole group gathered around, except for one. Little My looked around.
Well, no use in fishing now. I haven't had a catch all morning... Seems like a storm is coming in. I thought to myself, taking the pole out of the ground and collecting the twine.
“Hey…where’s Rauna? Is she having fun somewhere without us??” Sniff said, looking around too.
"Maybe she wanted to get away from you, Sniff." Little My retorted.
"Me!??? Why me?" Sniff yelled.
"Because you're annoying and you never want to do anything fun! AND you’re a scaredy cat!"
As Little My and Sniff argued, Snorkmaiden spoke up. "What should we do...? It's not as fun without the seven of us."
"Hmm… How about we think of some places to show Rauna when she comes back!" Moomin said, consoling Snorkmaiden.
“Good thinking Moomin! You’re so clever!” Snorkmaiden exclaimed, grasping his hand.
"Good idea Moomin. Where should we check out? We’ve already gone to the more known spots.” I added.
"We should go to the witches' forest!" Popped up Little My.
"The witch's forest!?? oOh- I think I feel a bit sick..." Sniff grumbled.
"Oh, come on, Sniff! See? You ARE a scaredy cat!" Little My argued.
"Besides, I heard that the witch is going wherever she came from for a few days. Let's go to the witches' forest and see Alicia!"
"That sounds great!" Snorkmaiden clapped.
"I wonder how she's been. We haven't seen her since the last spring." Moomin thought.
“Let’s go!” Little My yelled and started running ahead to the witch’s forest.

⥈ Day 2: Moominvalley ⥈
It was midday in Moominvalley, and it was a boring day. Moomin and the others lay in the shade of a tree. Snufkin played the harmonica, resting against the tree.
“Moomin, do you think Rauna will come back today?” Snorkmaiden asked as she braided a flower crown.
"I don't know Snorkmaiden..." Moomin sighed, plucking at the petals.
"Well, she'd better come back soon. It's so boring!" Little My huffed, tearing up blades of grass. "Hey Snufkin. Rauna's a vagabond like you, right?"
Snufkin stopped playing and glanced over.
"Yes, she is. Why do you ask?"
"Then you have a vagabond instinct, right? Then you can tell us if she'll be back soon or not."
"Vagabonds' instinct?" Snufkin asked curiously.
"When we first met Rauna, she said you'd be coming soon after her. She said it was a vagabond instinct, and she was right." Moomin chimed in.
"Ah, I see now," Snufkin smiled. "Actually, I do have a vagabond instinct. Mine is a bit different from Rauna's. Each vagabond has an instinct unique to themselves."
"Oh wow! What's your instinct, Snufkin? It's something special, isn't it?" Snorkmaiden eyes shone.
"Well... You already know!" Snufkin laughed. "My instinct is with music!”
From Snufkin's loud laugh, Sniff woke up with a start.
"-huh!? Ah...is it lunchtime already?" He looked around with half-closed eyes.
"Come on Sniff! You're such a glutton!" Little My rolled her eyes.
"Actually, I think it is lunchtime," Snufkin said, looking at the horizon.
"Oh, goody! I hope Moominmamma made something really good!" With that, Sniff hurried off to Moominhouse.
"Oh! I need to go prepare Snork's lunch! I'll see everyone later. Bye!" Snorkmaiden placed the finished floral crown on Moomin's head and a quick kiss. "See you later, Moomin!"
"Thank you for the crown, Snorkmaiden! I'll see you later!" Moomin smiled, a blush on his face.
"Yuck! I gotta go, too. I'm having lunch with Mymble and the inspector." Little My ran off.
Moomin played with the floral crown in his hands.
“Snufkin?”
“Yes, Moomin?”
“Do you think…if me and Snorkmaiden got married- not anytime soon- would things change too much?”
Snufkin looked at Moomin’s worried face and down to the crown he held.
“Who knows. The future isn’t revealed to anyone. But… I think that everything will be okay, even if things do change. The group will still be a group. Time will go on. And when spring comes, we’ll all meet again.”
“...you’re right. Thank you, Snufkin.” Moomin stood up. “I should go too, see you later, Snufkin." Moomin said with a wave.
"It’s nothing, Moomin. See you later." With that, Snufkin was left peacefully alone. "Well. I suppose I'd better start making some lunch for myself." Snufkin smiled, walking back to his tent.

⥈ Day 3: Heading Back ⥈
⧫ ⧫ ⧫ Rauna POV ⧫ ⧫ ⧫
I had walked without purpose for the past two and a half days. Resting, walking, resting, walking. Day or night, it didn’t matter. An endless loop. Being enveloped in nature was the best thing for me. The knotted mess in my heart and thoughts were drawn out of me, untangling, and dispersing into the vast world.
If I wanted to keep walking for the rest of my life, I could. If I wanted to settle down somewhere, I could. If I wanted to make a homey hut in the forest, I could. But life itself will bring turmoil and problems, even if I never stood still.
I gazed into the far distance. A cold, light breeze grazed my cheek. A cold front moving in. A dark spot sat on the horizon, an angry black storm cloud.
Guess I’m going back to Moominvalley. I didn’t have my things to ensure safety in such a large storm. I didn’t want to start from scratch again. Losing everything but my violin.
Turning, I started heading back.

Chapter 5: Midnight Violin - "When Spring Comes, We'll Meet Again" (1 Drawing!)
[Le Cygne (The Swan) By Saint-Saëns]
⧫ ⧫ ⧫ Snufkin POV ⧫ ⧫ ⧫
I quickly reached my destination, and I could spot a blurry figure between the trees. They stood in the shining rays of the moon. The secluded performance outweighed any public one.
I placed a hand over my cloak pocket where my harmonica lay. Running the tips of my fingers over the opening, I finally reached in. Its cold metallic top sent shivers up my spine.
⧫ ⧫ ⧫
⧫ ⧫ ⧫ Rauna POV: A couple minutes prior ⧫ ⧫ ⧫
Playing my violin, I snapped back into my surroundings. There was a rustle of a bush nearby.
Who is it? An animal? Whatever it was, it came closer. It didn’t feel like an animal. Who would be awake right now? It couldn’t be Snufkin, could it? I mean…he didn’t return to the campsite and did hear that he likes taking night walks.
The presence stopped, not coming any closer. Hidden in the shadows of the trees. I was confident from the feeling the silent figure gave that it was Snufkin. A quiet, self-assured presence. I continued to play, curious about what he’d do. Will he leave? Or stay? Would we talk? Or will he listen to me play and pretend he never saw me here?
Notes of a harmonica slowly joined me, traveling through the gentle breeze through the trees. It filled me with encouragement, and a warmth grew in me. I smiled. We played together till the end, something that I didn’t do.
Lowering my violin from my shoulder, I looked in his direction. Still smiling from our secluded duo performance, I called out.
“Are you going to leave like I did that day? Wouldn’t you like to join me here? The moonlight is stunning.” Other than the sound of the forest, there was nothing. Snufkin silently appeared from the cover of the trees. Satisfied, I turned, packing away my instrument. Even without looking, I could feel and hear Snufkin draw near.
⧫ ⧫ ⧫
“You didn’t tell me you could play an instrument.” He spoke softly. We sat on the large rock together.
“And you,” I replied, “didn’t tell me you like moonlit walks.” Why can’t I stop smiling? It’s strange how comfortable I am with him. It’s nice talking with him. I like this feeling. I met his eyes, and he smiled.
“I’m curious, Rauna. Why didn’t you tell me you were the one who played the duet with me that morning?” He looked up at the moon. “You knew it was me, and Moomin didn’t really keep my harmonica playing a secret.” He joked.
I laughed, “true. I think it’s one of the first things I heard from Moomin when I got here. And constantly after… He always praises your harmonica playing. You can tell he admires you.” I leaned back, ignoring his gaze, slightly evading the real question.
We sat in silence, feeling the cool breeze on our skin. The moonlight shone down on us. He waited for me.
[Moonlit Scene (My Pinterest Link)]
“I don’t know why.” I confessed. “I felt like…that I didn’t need to say anything. And,” I looked at Snufkin. “I hope this doesn’t sound terrible, but- I was a little curious too. Of when you’d realize it was me.” A nervous chuckle escaped my lips. “Didn’t take too long, I hope?”
Snufkin hummed, taking in my rambling while I discreetly twisted my fingers. I was starting to feel guilty.
I tilted into him, forcing his gaze on me. “...I’m sorry.” I apologized. Maybe I should’ve told him sooner. I don’t want to lose this friendship with Snufkin.
“What for?” Snufkin asked, bewildered. I frowned.
“You’re not upset with me? I should’ve told you sooner.” I answered honestly.
“Rauna, I’m not upset. I asked because I was curious. The mystery was killing me. Don’t worry. I don’t hold grudges against my friends.”
I smiled. “Sorry, waiting to find out was hard, right?”
Snufkin chuckled. “Yeah. But I’m happy it was you. The one who owns that violin.” He said, glancing down at my case.
I looked down at it. “You know…you’re the first person at Moominvalley to hear and know that I play.”
“Really?” He observed the case closely. “Ah, I see. It doesn’t look like your typical instrument case.”
“That’s right. But it does its job great,” I gently patted the old case. After so many years, it had countless scratches and even a few dents. A bit longer, and it might be qualified to be called ugly… It’s cherished and will be, even at that point. It holds my dearest possession, after all.
I began talking again, an indescribable ache rolling as small waves crashed over my brain noisily.
“...When I was younger, an elderly villager I knew gifted the violin and case to me." I stared at the moon shining above us. It felt a little difficult to swallow. "I would go to his house as often as I could. When seeing me, he'd work up an appetite," I laughed. "We'd eat together most days, and at night, I'd listen as he played the violin. We both enjoyed the company."
I swung my foot, kicking my heel into the dirt. "He taught me how to love music. I was curious, and he was kind enough to teach me. He taught me most of what I know today.” I paused.
“After a while, he told me he needed someone to continue his passion once...once he could no longer.” Snufkin just listened. "Without him, I wouldn't have this violin." I ended.
I left out so many details. He didn’t press for them, but I could tell he wasn’t uninterested per se. The way he listened to my every word, eyes filled with the desire to understand. Even though I knew he was curious to know more, I spoke no longer.
Unconsciously, I tapped my fingers on my thigh, entranced in the sound of the forest and my mind. We sat in silence. I've never spoken to others about how I got my violin, especially from whom. Maybe I said too much. I released my held breath shakingly. I couldn’t meet his eyes anymore.
Under his eyes, I was vulnerable now. It felt like a layer had been peeled back from me. That once we met eyes, he’d know. He’d know and understand everything.
“...I should go. We need sleep. The sun will be up soon.” My consciousness consumed me.
I didn’t want to sleep, and I doubted that I would. On the other hand, if I stayed, I wouldn’t know what to do with myself. That I’d become someone, something, else. I could feel my blood pulsing in my ears, my fingertips tingling with electricity. I was scared. Scared that I said too much, my mind raced. I need to go. Before something happens. Something? Like what? I didn’t know. But I wasn’t going to stay and find out. Standing, I grabbed my case. I could feel Snufkin’s eyes on the back of my head. I’m sorry, will you understand me? But how can he? When I don’t communicate these inner thoughts to him? No one can read minds.
“Goodnight, Snufkin. Let’s play a duet together again sometime.” I said lightly, throwing a smile over my shoulder. I wonder how fake my smile looked just then. Was it crooked? Was it not even a smile? Maybe a grimace? I should go before I mess this up even more.
“Goodnight. We should let’s do that.” Snufkin, still sitting on the rock, called out his reply to my departing figure.
I swallowed down the emotions in my throat. The slight breeze now irritated my eyes. Images that have seared themselves into my brain reappeared again. I knew I wouldn't sleep tonight.

Chapter 4: The Beach - "When Spring Comes, We'll Meet Again" (1 Drawing!)
The next day, we met up with the others again after having breakfast on our own. Just as Snufkin said, I was bound to hear him play the harmonica, like it or not. He sat on the railing of the bridge and played.
Like mice following the pied piper, the others came running to him. By this time, Sniff had been woken up, and I quickly learned of his character. He was prone to complaining and whining. I wasn’t the greatest fan. But that’s okay. I don’t have to become friends with everyone immediately. I reminded myself.
"Where should we go today, everyone?" Moomin asked.
"Let's go to the beach! Oh, please, Moomin?" Snorkmaiden excitedly asked, her tail swishing behind her. "I haven’t seen the sea since hibernation. There should be some pretty shells washed up on shore to collect!" Snorkmaiden clasped her hands together, already imagining the view.
“Maybe we should get some breakfast first…” Sniff mumbled, yawning into his paw.
“Didn’t you already have Moominmamma’s pancakes for breakfast? Are you seriously already hungry, Sniff?” Little My put her hands on her waist, rolling her eyes.
“So what…I can always eat more.” Sniff sighed, looking dreamily into the distance. I hid my laugh in my hand. Sniff is…an interesting creature, especially when paired with Little My.
“We’ll go eat later for lunch, Sniff. Now, how does the beach sound to everyone?" Moomin looked around the group.
“Sounds good to me,” I said.
Seeing everyone nod in agreement, Moomin said, "Alright! Let's go to the beach!"
Snorkmaiden and Moomin walked together, holding paws and enjoying the conversation. Sniff and Little My bickered about who-knows-what, imaginary scenarios, and whatnot. Snufkin and I walked with the others, mostly silent. Watching the group, I couldn’t help but smile.
⧫ ⧫ ⧫
The sound of the crashing waves filled my ears. The salty wind forced me to turn my head away from the deep blue of the sea.
Snufkin sat on a drift log, watching the others with relaxed eyes. His green hat tilted over his eyes, blocking the glaring sun.
Sniff, Moomin, and Little My played tag. The three were running through the incoming and retreating waves. Screeches (mostly Sniffs) of the thrill and laughter made the game look so fun.
Snorkmaiden was scouring for shells to add to her collection, bringing each one to the sunlight. Finding a good one, she’d nod in satisfaction and tuck it away. Remembering the cave I had walked past yesterday morning, I tried to find it from where I stood. The sun's glare made me squint, and I brought my hand to shade my eyes. Scanning the mountainside, I spotted the darker entrance of the cave with ease. Hm…I wonder what the cave is like. Maybe there are bats. Some cool cave rocks, or maybe nothing at all.
Feeling eyes on me, I looked behind me and met Snufkin’s gaze.
Beach_Drawing
"Rauna!"
I turned back to the ocean, looking at Snorkmaiden, who had called out my name.
“Yeah?”
“Look at this shell! It’s such a beautiful, glossy black…” She brought it up to my hair. “It looks just like your hair,” Snorkmaiden said, tilting the shell so it caught the sun and shimmered.
I laughed a little.
“Thank you, Snorkmaiden. It is beautiful, and I’m not just saying that ‘cause you said it looks like my hair.” I teased.
“Oh!” Snorkmaiden laughed. She held it in her hands, silently debating something. “Here, you can have this one. It would make a good collection piece in my treasure box, but it looks made for you.”
I held it in my hand, feeling the smoothness of it. The black was like obsidian, cool to the touch. “I appreciate the sentiment, Snorkmaiden. But…now that you’ve given it to me, I can do whatever I’d like, right? I want to gift it back to you.” I smile. “That way, you’ll remember me anytime you see it.”
“Oh, that’s true. Well, it is a pretty good gift.” She smiled, receiving it back. “Thanks!”
“You’re the one who did all the work. I just gave it back.” I laughed. We spent the morning at the beach, enjoying the view and sun. Moominmamma and Moominpappa joined us later in the day, bringing food for a beach lunch picnic. The other half, we lazed around. At first, we told stories that we made up to each other. Then, we listened to Snufkin play his harmonica as the cool breeze gently passed through the valley.
⧫ ⧫ ⧫
[Le Cygne (The Swan) By Saint-Saëns]
Night fell, and I was as sleepy as a nocturnal creature. It wasn’t the first time I found myself lying wide awake, staring at the top of my tent. My hands clasped over my stomach, the hours, minutes, and seconds. Slowly ticking by.
It was a good day, but the night seemed too loud and quiet all at the same time. It was starting to weigh on me. The nighttime was what I often enjoyed. But from time to time, the night brought me rude thoughts, things I’d rather forget, and a sleepless time.
Knowing I wouldn’t fall asleep, no matter how long I lay there, I sat up. My violin case, which always rested near my head as I slept, caught my eye. The black case seemed to glimmer in the faint moonlight that diffused through my tent material. Well, there’s no harm in taking a little walk… I was unsure if Snufkin had returned from his own rendezvous with the night, so I left my tent quietly to not wake him.
⧫ ⧫ ⧫
After walking deeper into the beautiful nighttime scenery, I set my case down on a rock. The moonlight streamed through the gaps in the forest canopy. Maybe I was being dramatic, or my sleeplessness was creating hallucinations but…the moonlight seemed to shimmer. How beautiful. Feeling melancholic, taking out my violin, I gathered my thoughts.
⧫ ⧫ ⧫ Snufkin POV ⧫ ⧫ ⧫
Low. sweet notes played in the far distance. It drew out like a lonely singer. And yet, in its loneliness, it was the loveliest.
Violin? I wonder who’s out at this time. As if I’m one to talk, I’m also having a midnight stroll. I smiled. As I thought about it, a face appeared in my mind. Rauna? My stomach jumped. Could it be her, or am I just… I paused to identify the feeling. Hoping? Is that the right word? Why am I hoping that Ruana is the one behind the violin playing? I felt all out of sorts.
I continued walking in the direction of the music, my palms were clammy, and my stomach felt ill with nervousness.
