Queensmount Traditions

As a bus driver, I get to drive around the whole city, I see how much Kitchener-Waterloo and Cambridge has changed, as well as how much of it has stayed the same. 

One thing I noticed while working, is tradition. 

Growing up I attended two elementary schools in Kitchener. The first was A.R. Kaufman Public School (now called Hillside Public School) from Kindergarten to grade six. Then, in 1997 my family moved, and I attended Queensmount Senior Public School for grades 7 and 8.

When graduating and leaving this school, there was something you had to do before you finally embarked onto the scary road of high school. You left your locker lock on the fence. Yes, I know it seems simple, but as you can see, as I was driving the bus I noticed that there were new shiny locks on the property fence, along with some very old and rusty ones, and one of them was mine. Which just tells me that this simple, cute tradition, after all this years, was still being upheld at this school. 

I find it interesting that us humans always find a way to leave our mark to in this world. From cave drawings, statues, paintings, old buildings to photographs and videos, we let future generations know that we were here once, that we lived. 

So I guess, this was my way of saying “Alicia was here.”

In November I had the wonderful privilege of working with @cbcnews to create portraits of their new host @ginellamassatv. Massa became Canada’s first hijab-wearing television reporter in 2015, and the first news anchor in hijab when she anchored the 11 p.m. newscast for @CityNews in Toronto in 2016. I've had some really cool experiences shooting for Maclean's Magazine this year.  This is my second assignment with them, and I get to meet some really special Canadian Olympians as well.

For this article I had the opportunity to meet one of our Canadian Olympians, swimmer Maggie MacNeil.  She is the current world champion and Americas record holder in the 100 meter butterfly event. 

She, just like our other athletes has had to find unique ways to continue to train during this pandemic that we're in.

Her portraits were shot in her backyard at her home.I also got to meet one of our volleyball players (will post later) who's image didn't make it in print, but will be in the online version of the article.

The other images in the magazine spread are by other photographers.

Yes, the pool water was cold, we shot at 7am.  Yes, I got in the pool with her for the swim shot.If anyone wants to get me an underwater housing for my X-T3 that would be great, lol.
