Just wait until countries decide to stop exporting coffee to the US or it results in a huge increase in prices. See how long it takes for MAGA to want the tariffs off.

Gosh, I hadn’t even thought of that. So many people are really expecting that these tariffs will go away, if not during trump’s presidency then whoever takes over after. To make these decisions would have such long-term consequences on your business, why even bother? Your business will be forever changed, you will spend so much time, money, and effort to move production to the states, why even try when there’s a high chance that the tariffs are going to go away?
And the idea of used tools… that’s scarier in a way. One thing they’re really on about is cars. Used tools to make things like new engines, each part of a car that could literally make or break it, that could cause real damage and could hurt people. Idk about anyone else, but I’d much rather have the different parts of my car made elsewhere, where the people are skilled in making that one part, where the machines are new and updated, than have old tools making a car.
There’s just no way this will work. Logistically, every single business is going to say ‘we can just up the price and make the consumer pay’ before they make all these changes. Hell, there will be quite a few businesses who I’m sure will use this as a chance to jack up the price even more to make a larger profit, saying everything is because of tariffs.
Ultimately, trade is a good thing and the companies that don’t already *want* to produce in the US aren’t going to just because of tariffs. They will use their thinking caps and realize it’ll be smarter and cheaper to increase prices. It’s the simplest economics. But apparently the horse doesn’t get that.
So the idea is that American companies will bring jobs back to the us and start producing here to avoid tariffs. Now, let’s forget the ‘tax cut’ ridiculousness because we have seen so many people explain TO OFFICIALS that this is not how tariffs work. But if we use our critical thinking skills for approximately 2 secs, we will realize that the logic around ‘just build it here’ is a little bit flawed.
If you have a company that is currently outsourcing materials from other countries, that means you don’t have people making that stuff here. So you’ll need to find people who know how to make it. You’ll need to hire more people who will be trained to make it. You’ll need to factor in those higher wages, probably benefits for workers, because America has higher wage requirements than those other countries. You’ll need the same amount of workers but you’ll be paying way more for them. But before you can even do that, you’ll need to build up factories and plants to make it, which will take years. Hell, it’ll take a while to find an area where you can even buy up the acres to build the plant. Then you’ll also need to hire construction workers, you’ll need to pay for materials.
Now that sounds like a huge headache. Especially when the alternative is just… raising prices. Either you can go through the hassle of moving your workforce to the US, which will result in raised prices and probably slow down or even halt your production which could very well destroy your business, or you can just raise prices. Which would you choose?
Something tells me there aren’t going to be many jobs added to the workforce as a result of these tariffs…

Has anything actually gotten better, for all the work you talk about doing? Or is it just treading water in misery forever?
Anon, ten years ago gay people couldn't get married in large parts of the US. AIDS was an almost certain death sentence when I was in high school. I was looking at job boards the other day and found a part time gas station job that had health insurance as a benefit, which NEVER would have happened 15 years ago. When I was a kid, hitting your child was extremely normalized in the US and my parents were the weird ones for not doing it. There is a vaccine for chicken pox. I didn't meet anyone who had transitioned until my 20s because it was so uncommon to transition in the aughts, and now there are some states that protect your right to have gender affirming care provided by your health insurance. It's not all states, but it's better than the number of states that had it in 2010, which was zero. THERE ARE TENANTS UNIONS NOW. WE HAVE A VACCINE AGAINST CERVICAL CANCER.
And all of that has been the work of a lot of individuals and organizations and research teams and activists.
