This song just came on shuffle. I suddenly realized, not entirely sure how or why, every time the song plays it just felt like I’m stuck in a limbo. It’s as if the song was released just now and I’m literally overwhelmed by feels again and again. Alright, since I’ve never actually elaborated my thoughts on this, and this is biased as hell, let’s go! 

For starters, I’m really grateful that this song-slash-project was released. As a disappointed Jaehyunist in CB era (not talking about the B-sides), this really is a gift sent from the universe. Poetic Beauty: Jaehyun and Try Again could really be THAT thing as Jaehyun’s portfolio; visuals and musicality wise (albeit not contributing through composing nor producing, his voice made it up, he sounded really nice here). 

PBJ web pictorial might not be one-of-a-kind and the poses might be a tad bit repetitive but it’s something that not most male idols do. The PBJ Videography was incredible. Loved the color schemes and themes (warm and cool). I’m talking solely from the eyes of a fan and not being entirely sure if it’s for the Jaehyun-branding-purposes but it really suited him, including the whole I used to be the sweetest boy ever till I found out being the baddest boy was better, if he really wanted to shed the sweet guy image. Only assuming if Min Hee Jin is really taking control of this and basing on how she works with her clients, then it might really be Jaehyun’s message. Also if she really is the one behind it, I hope she can utilize him a bit more. Maybe not (yet?) a muse like Krystal, but feels like he meets her aesthetics criterion. Alright let’s continue: the styling was really top notch; loved the lenses, makeup, set of outfits and props they used. And it also emphasized how Jaehyun suits brown hair that much. 

Try Again music video was also nice, not PBJ Videography level but it really compliments the song. If they were to release something like the Videography people might get distracted (even more) and would cause the audience to not enjoy the song as much as the video, so that was smart of them. The song was beautiful; I’m really all for sentimental, bittersweet songs. Not a great fan of the whole lyrics department but both d.ear and Jaehyun’s voices really made it up for me, loved how I’m always serenaded by their warm voices whenever I play this song. Since I’ve always preferred Jaehyun singing within his range and not strain, personally I think it’s one of the songs that can do that, though to some it may sound like it could’ve been a bit lower to accommodate his range. The boy nailed it though, shown in the live performance. It seemed like they could’ve built more chemistry for the performance but probably because it’s their first and last they didn’t really focus on that matter.

The public reception.. PBJ Web Pictorial tweets and insta posts in their official accounts were some of the most popular posts in 2017. And for a STATION by a singer-songwriter and a rookie, reaching 10.7k likes on MelOn is pretty nice, though in my opinion the YouTube views could’ve been a little bit higher than what it is right now (848.8k). It’s regretful that even if everyone knows he can sing, dance, has a really great stage presence and a lot more talents in line, sometimes people still think that he’s just another pretty face from a big agency. Personally speaking I would like that to change, slowly but sure. He can totally keep the persona that SM gave him, being the First Love and Handsome Man, but it’d be really nice when people think of Jaehyun, people will be reminded of, let’s say, his warm voice then his pretty face. I’m not saying that him being good looking is not a good thing, it’s just that he’s way more than the surface. (So please also listen to NCT’s Night Night 11PM KST daily)

Also, all negatives aside, many NCTzens and those of other fandoms have expressed their awe and would want to see their biases in such project. But all in all, I think this is one of SM’s best projects. It really seemed like it’s well thought, planned, prepared, executed, edited, and the public reception is also nice. Glad that it was Jaehyun. I can only hope that he’s at the very least content with the outcome and the whole experience, and use this to further develop and hone his skills.
