I remember watching this scene for the very first time and going "wtf?" It's honestly fucked up how much the show keeps reinforcing the fact that Sam has absolutely no say over his own body and is instantly villainized as soon as he tries to fight for that right...
Metamorphosis (4x04)
As @caranfindel says in the meta that prompted me to make these gifs, this moment is an interesting example of how narrative power works in Supernatural, both for Sam and Dean as people and for us as viewers. Dean has been back to the past and found out (amongst other things) something hugely important about Sam: the fact that he was fed demon blood as a baby. He chooses to withhold this information from his brother. But when it becomes apparent that Sam already knew this (again, we’re talking about something that affects Sam specifically), Dean is angry and Sam apologises. Dean is seen to have more rights over Sam’s history and his body than Sam does himself; and because Sam (always ready to feel guilty, and especially at this point in his story) doesn’t question it, we as viewers are prompted to accept it too.

I love that whenever there is a world ending crisis that is orchestrated by an all powerful beings, Dean is the easy choice, he follows orders “the good little soldier” “daddy’s blunt instrument”. It was the same in season 4 when he accepted to work for heaven and the same in season 5 when he accepted being Michaels vessel until Sam talked him out of it. The same with Billie’s plan with the Malak box (again failed because Sam opposed to the plan). The same in season 14 finale when he accepted Chuck’s gun to use it on Jack until Sam pointed out Chuck’s manipulation and lies. It’s the same in 15x17 too when he was willing to go with Chuck’s plan to gain his “freedom” (although this time he was unaware that this was exactly what Chuck wanted) and yet again it’s Sam who talked him out of it. It’s always Sam the ever rebel to ruin all powerful beings masterplans. He is always the challenge.
Examples:
In season 5, he faught all season against destiny and the angels plans for him and even when all lost hope, his faith didn’t waver and ultimately his strength and love for his family is what saved the world.
In season 10, when Dean was about to kill him (ordered by Death) he faught for himself and for his brother and was able to break through Dean to break the hold of Mark of Cain and kill Death.
In season 11, Sam defied Lucifer and said no even though he was in the Cage with his worst nightmare yet that didn’t break him.
In season 14, he didn’t go along with Chuck’s plan to kill Jack and instead he questioned him and confronted him about being controlling their lives.
In season 15, he was always skeptical about Billie’s plan and when he found out he immediatly tried to prevent Dean from going with it.
Sam Winchester is a leader, not a follower. That is why he was Azazel’s favorite and that is why he was supposed to be the boyking that will lead an army. That is why all of the Apocalypse!world hunters chose to follow him.

Hi! Can I ask you about 8.23 & Dean's "I'm just spit-balling here..."? I've met an opinion a few times that this is Dean helping Sam at Sam's own request - Sam admitted to not knowing what to say in his confession, Dean offers to give him suggestions, Sam agrees. If Sam hadn't said that he doesn't know/hand't agreed to suggestions, Dean wouldn't've said anything. All good. So what Dean said can't be seen in a negative light, because of above. What's your opinion on this? Thx muchly in advance!
Wow, I’ve actually never heard that specifically before. I’ve seen a good deal of glossing over of that scene, but not this. Hmmm.
Okay, before we get into it, here’s the actual exchange:
DEAN
Your blood’s supposed to be purified, isn’t it? You ever, uh — you ever done the “forgive me, father” before?
SAM
Well, once, when we were kids. Which is why I have no clue what to say now.
DEAN
Well, I mean, I could give you suggestions if you want.
SAM
O-okay. Yeah, sure.
DEAN
All right. Well, I’m just spit-balling here, but if I were you, uh… Ruby, killing Lilith, letting Lucifer out, losing your soul, not looking for me when I went to Purgatory,
SAM
Thanks.
[Frustrated with DEANS comments SAM turns away and continues to fill a bag with needed items for the trial and when he is done he picks up the bag and walks toward the church.]
DEAN
for starters. Or, hey, h-how about what you did to, uh, Penny Markle in the sixth grade? Why don’t you lead with that?
[SAM turns to look at DEAN.]
SAM
Well, that was you.
[DEAN appears to think SAM maybe SAM is right.]
DEAN
Carry on.
Okay, so people are technically right. If Sam hadn’t said he didn’t know, Dean wouldn’t have had the opening and may not have said anything as a result. After all, Dean is an opportunist, and took the opening provided to him. I’m not sure frankly Dean would have stopped if Sam said “no I’m good” to his offer of suggestions, but that’s not really provable. But Sam giving Dean that opening and Dean taking it does not make this Sam’s fault. That’s like telling the girl who got groped in the elevator it’s her fault for wearing that top.
(If anyone reading this says it’s her fault—fuck you).
Dean offered help and Sam took it, and Dean used it punitively. Really punitively. I mean…he puts losing your soul on that list, and while I think none of those are sins Sam should have to confess for, that’s like the one that’s absolutely least of all Sam’s fault. Cas pulled him out of hell without a soul; how dare Sam allow that to happen, right?
Whether or not Sam gave permission for Dean to offer his opinion (with the assumption it would actually be a helpful opinion), Dean is still responsible for what comes out of his mouth, end of story. It doesn’t matter if he was invited to talk; he was still responsible for his hurtful words.
And those words were just one more confirming moment, to Sam, of all the things he’s done to let Dean down, and drove him to be suicidal.
SAM
You can barely do it with me. I mean, you think I screw up everything I try. You think I need a chaperone, remember?
DEAN
Come on, man. That’s not what I meant.
SAM
No, it’s exactly what you meant. You want to know what I confessed in there? What my greatest sin was? It was how many times I let you down. I can’t do that again.
No matter the circumstances, Dean said what he said of his own free will, and it helped lead to this. And Dean is responsible for the consequences of his actions.
It’s amazing how far people will go to ensure Dean is not responsible for anything he does.
#he simply didn’t give a single solitary fuck about what was going to happen to Sam#at least as much as he cared to get one more dig at Sam#THIS#the fact that he had the audacity to say he didn't mean that shit#dean critical#dean negative#sam winchester

This is Rafah, The "safe" zone, where 1.5 million Palestinian fled to. You have to understand, what bombing Rafah means.
Please don't look away, while everybody is busy watching the super bowl, Israel commits one of its most deadly and openly genocidal attacks on Rafah. Please don't look away.

the truly uncomfortable thing about spn as a show is that it consistently acts like dean is in the right when he unjustly lashes out at people

the way sam changes from the beginning of s8 to the end of s8 makes me ill.
coming off their separation, he starts out trying his best to be unapologetic abt the choices he made when dean was gone. openly calling dean out when he makes him feel like shit (“you’ve been kicking me ever since you got back, but that’s over.”) insisting that he knows he wants a clean break and that it’s not actually his Responsibility to suffer for the rest of his life. refusing to let other hunters like martin talk down to him.
and then dean’s lies and hypocrisy abt benny, and dean’s fake SOS text from amelia, and sam breaking up with amelia bc with dean back in his life he doesn’t want to hurt her with his mess, and dean’s doubt over sam’s ability to complete the trials.
which all culminates in the state he’s in by the season finale - uncaring of whether he lives or dies bc he’s always been a burden to dean anyway and maybe if he’s the one to close the gates of hell it’ll make up for everything else he’s supposedly done wrong. “these trials, they’re purifying me.” / “you think I screw up everything I try - you think I need a chaperone, remember?”
this alone:
“what happens when you’ve decided I can’t be trusted, again? I mean, who’re you gonna turn to next time, instead of me? another angel, another… another vampire? do you have any idea what it feels like to watch your brother…”
the speech dean gives sam in the church Woefully misses the mark in that it doesn’t address any of the events that pushed sam to the ledge. it doesn’t address dean’s mistreatment of sam as a partner in the slightest. empty words that sound nice on the surface, like the majority of dean’s attempts at patching them back up from s4 onwards.
