FMP Proposal
Project Summary: The project < Words > is exploring the words visually and also the actual meaning of them and let people observe and think the usual things into a new perspective. It’s not a film forcing the audience to get a message but giving a spare space and time to let them think and interpret the message in themselves’ way.
Context : The project is describing the definition of common words such as love, portrait, and conversation visually and breaking the common thoughts that we have. Furthermore, breaking fixed idea could lead people to think in their own way and find a different way to think and understand things.
Research : Mostly base on the deconstruction theory in various part such as philosophy, aesthetic (fashion and architecture ), and history.
Audience : Public, people who’re interested in philosophy or arts
Media : Short film
Outcome : A film which is mixed in a various format which can deliver thoughts. The narration includes chapters like the actual shape of a book and the film is cross-edited with photographs and films which could confuse the audience the form of work. Not only the mixed format of work but also the context also open-ended.

This is my final video link and some screenshots. Also, I got some film photographs which will be exhibit in the final exhibition.
*self-evaluation : The shooting could have done better, but there wasn’t enough time to shoot. Also, I hope I can try the concept <time> again someday. I think overall the theme was quite way to experimental and that makes me a bit hard to shoot and edit. If managed my time properly and hand-in my editorial as well on the submission date, it might be better to see my concept clearly. But I was having some mental issues currently, so I couldn’t handle all of it. At least, the final outcome is satisfying.

For the film, I selected 5 different words randomly and made a script which can let people think about the words again. The script shows the common definition of the words at first but in the end, there’s no description as a text but visuals to feel about the words. Base on the script, I prepared storyboards for each word.
For some visuals, I need to experiment it before shooting. This was for chapter 3. Portrait. To show that the face is not the only thing to represent a person, I wanted to show distorted images base with the person’s appearance (base on the characteristic of deconstruction) and I thought a glass filled with water is the way to represent it.
And this is an experiment for “The most beautiful moment of a flower”. Most people think that full bloom is the most beautiful moment of a flower which commonly used as a proverb back in South Korea. For example, if older people saying “Your age is full-bloom”, it means you are young and you are at the most beautiful age in life. But I was always thought that it’s not true. It’s all different for each people and very relative. So I want to show the beautiful moments of a flower without full bloom.
Location: I book the space with a white background because it’s very experimental and focused on the meanings. I wanted to keep everything as simple as possible to deliver the message clearly.
Moodboard
The shooting was successful without “Time” chapter. It was very hard to visualise it and also I didn’t have enough time to shoot. So I will remove the chapter and just working on 4 words. The editing will be focusing on delivering the message and old, vintage mood.

During the process of visualising the words without an actual shape, was very difficult. It was too hard for me to find a way to visualise it and also couldn’t find the proper references. So I decided to change an idea into “Asking a question about things we always think it’s obvious or things that we forgot what it actually is. Originated by the philosopher Jacques Derrida, deconstruction is an approach to understanding the relationship between text and meaning. Derrida's approach consisted of conducting readings of texts looking for things that run counter to the intended meaning or structural unity of a particular text. The purpose of deconstruction is to show that the usage of language in a given text, and language as a whole, are irreducibly complex, unstable, or impossible. Throughout his readings, Derrida hoped to show deconstruction at work. These observations inspired a range of theoretical enterprises in the humanities, including the disciplines of law, historiography, linguistics, sociolinguistics, psychoanalysis, LGBT studies, and the feminist school of thought.
In art history, deconstruction is very famous as a deconstruction architecture and fashion as well. The characteristics of the trend which are collage, recreate an object into a new method, make other shapes from destroying the shape.
(ref https://www.pinterest.com/elenilorandou1/deconstruction-architecture/)
As you can see deconstruction collapse common shape of architecture with smooth lines and combining straight lines and curves.
Maison Margiela is known as the best deconstruction fashion brand. Most of their works cut the clothes into pieces and reassemble into new way, or make the totally new shape of clothes.
(ref https://www.pinterest.co.uk/search/pins/?rs=ac&len=2&q=maison%20margiela%20couture&eq=maison%20margiela%20couture&etslf=1280&term_meta[]=maison%7Cautocomplete%7C0&term_meta[]=margiela%7Cautocomplete%7C0&term_meta[]=couture%7Cautocomplete%7C0)
The pioneer of deconstruction Jacques Derrida published the book “Right of Inspection” in 1999. I was trying to find a book from the library, but it was barely possible to have a look. This book is composed of over 200 black and white photos with a very small proportion of text. It is basically telling the story about sexuallity and LGBT without text. The hundreds of still cut images are listed and it represents a story. It’s like a movie but made with still images which was very interested. Also from the movie “The beaches of Agnes” by Agnes Varda who’s one of my favorite director which includes the technique Photo-roman was very inspired.
(ref https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUUq1HPE6IE)
With the deconstruction theory, I want to make something feels like chaos and could let people think about familiar things that we used to think it’s obvious. As a medium, I want to make a short film (and editorial which will be exhibit at the final show) with a different format that they usually have.

For FMP, I looked into my old note to get an idea. From there I found a sentence “Visualising the words without actual shapes”. This was a theme that I always wanted to work on but there’s any chance to do it. Such as love, sadness, solitude, depression that I use to feel or think about. Sometimes I think about things which are too obvious and start to make a question about it. For example, I drink coffee every morning. During drinking coffee I suddenly think about coffee itself and the name of coffee. Who made this word for coffee? Is there anyone calls coffee into different words? Maybe alien from another planet? These thoughts lead me to various movies and philosophical theories. For example, the movie “Arrival” which based on linguistics and philosophy was very interested. Also, I found a vintage drawing from Pinterest don’t know who’s work it is. But this image was visually very attractive. I still don’t have a specific theme for FMP but I’m pretty sure that I will experiment with some thoughts that I’ve thought often combine to Deconstruction theory.

I choose Heinz project from D&AD projects. This projects is celebrating 150 years of Heinz ketchup. The brief is mainly focusing on celebration and keep the legacy of Heinz. I decided to focus on celebration which is basically having fun with a lot of different people from different areas. The work needs to be public and which everyone can easy to get.
My first idea is making movie homage with Heinz. The movie needs to be known to everyone and also which can connect our generation to next generation(that’s what Heinz wanted).

15/02/2019 Clerkenwell Design Week #6
To solve the problems, I made a two different solutions.
First, for not eye-catching problem I decided to put colour gradation from orange to red on the poster. Theses colours are catching eyes and also symbolise the market opening hours which are from 2am to morning time. These seems much more intense and proper to catch busy people who walk on the street which is very satisified.
Second problem was people only can see layered image without flat image (which can help people to understand that it’s from a map of Smithfield market). For the solution, I decided to do one more print on the poster with glow in dark ink. So basically at night people only can see the actual poster but at night when people can’t see the print in dark, the flat image will show up. Smithfield is an early morning starts at 2am. So people who works at nigth or early morning can also so see the different image as well.
*self-evaluation : To solve the problems that I’ve got during the process of design, the solution was appropriate. Of course the shape is kind a hard to understand, but it definitely can excite people’s curiosity through colours and abstract shape. Also using glow in dark ink print to show another image was a great choice too.

*Mockup (with daylight)
*poster (will be printed with glow in dark ink)

This is mockup for black&white version. I really like the shape with colour on black&white, but it seems really hard to catch people’s eye when they are walikng fastly. And also it will be great to find a way to show the flat shape (combination of a map and notching system which represent 709 years of livestock) as well.

With the idea, combining notching system and a map of Smithfield Market using illustration.
(ref) https://www.smithfieldmarket.com/faqs/
This is current map of Smithfield. From the actual map, I decided to delete all details from here to simplify.
From the basic shape of current Smithfiled map, made number 7 and 9 with notching system. The livestock market was continued over 709 years and theses two images are number 7, and 9 (from left to right). At first attempt, I was trying to visualise the detail of pig’s ear with texture of their hair. but it seems too obvious and doesn’t trigger interest at all. So for this problem, I started to simplyfiy the shape of pig’s ear which is the last image. But the colour black has too big proportion of the poster so it seems too heavy and flat for me.
After various experiments focusing on notching system, I worked on using both a map and simplified notching system.
Putting marks on the map (first image) seems much complicated than cutting out one(second image). So this image on the bottom is the combination of map and notching system which will be the basic resource of final vinyl poster.
With this simple shapes, I want to add a visual which represents the amount of history of Smithfield market. With various trial, the shape of layering the simple symbol seems interesting.
I also worked with focused on notching one, but it seems too rough and can not see the image at all.
I started to overlap more, and at the end this shape has been made.
And based on this shape, I started to make a poster which could work as a trigger of interest and also showing the flat image. But the most important part of the poster is attractive visuals because the place Smithfield market has a large floating population. A lot of workers and people who works at the market which are very busy to walk and pass by. So to get people’s attention, it needs to be intense visually. And this was one of the reason why I decided this shape even it’s a bit abstract to understand.
I started to work only with black&white. At first I worked on transparent backgorund but the lines are too thin and all layered, it could barely seen when it’s printed on vinyl. So I put black and white gradation at the back to apper the shape well. Also layered shapes seems too abstract, I put the existance year of livestock at Smithfield market to help the audience to understand. The layered shapes are very hard to see the actual shape, I also add the actual shape at the back as a background as well.

06/02/2019 Clerkenwell Design Week #3
From the animal footprinting idea, I decided to get using animals and their identities. But using footprints seems too obvious, so I tried to find a solution about this issue which is markings and patterns on animals apart from hoofs such as ear notching. Ear notching is a very traditional method of identification in swine in which pigs are identified based on their birth order within a given farrowing. So notching is an idendtification for pigs.
These are old notching tools for horses that people used years ago. They used to burn the horse’s skin quickly to make marks on them.
The images down below are a blueprint for notching tool. It will be cool to make infographic poster with combining the shape of blueprint. But I’m concerning if it’s printed and displayed on the street, people might not see the poster properly. Because it contains a lot of detailed signs and contents (about the historical tales of Smithfield market).
These are references for pig’s ear notching. Notching symbolises the numbers. Also they have their own calculating system which was very interesting. Using the system of notching could be the best way to visualise it simply, and also interestingly.
So at the end, I decided to use pig’s ear notching system and will combine a shape or map of current Smithfield market. There was a livestock market since at least 1146 and it lasted for over 709 years in Smithfield Market. Also as you can see current Smithfield market is consists of three different buildings. So start with the left side building, I can put numbers 7, 0, 9 with notching system which will represent the histoy of 709 years of livestock market.

These three are detailed idea about livestock market in Smithfield market.
Idea A. Animal rights
These images below are from Banksy who’s the most famous street artist. He usally applicate animals images. Through his works, I thought relating the historical tale livestock market and animal’s right could be interesting. Personally I’m very interested in animal rights and wanted to work about the issue someday. If I stick with this idea, I want to make a image which could alert the seriousness of eating meat. But on the other hand, the idea could be unsuitable for the location and audience. Because most of people (the audience) who visit Smithfield market (which is currently using as a space of wholesale market) are butchers and people who want to buy fresh meat. So it could be very sensitive to create something about animal rights.
Idea B. Reversible Figures
Next idea is using reversible figures which contains two different ideas or images in one. The images will be black and white and the contents could be current image of Smithfield marked and old image of Smithfield market. This technique is very amusing but didn’t find the message to deliver through this.
Idea C. Footprints
It is inspired by livestock market in Smithfield. Foot prints are a presentative example of traces of time and it also could appears long history of Smithfield which enormous amount of people had passed by. With the animal foot prints, I’m thinking about to make an illustrate with various animals’ foot prints and use particular print way which slowly appears over the time.

23/01/2019 Clerkenwell Design Week #1
The project “Clerkenwell Design week” is creating vinyl inspired from the story of the historical tale allocated. My specific area is Smithfield market.
<History of Smithfield Market>
1.Only remaining wholesale market in central London. (It is also open to the public)
2. Name Smithfield derives from the original name for this flat area - “smoothfield”
3. There was a livestock market in Smithfield since at least 1146
4. Over the centuries the market expanded and slaughter houses and other trades linked to the butchery trade also grew up in the area.
5. Late 18th – early 19th century market was also a venue for Wife Sales. A quick and easy way to end a marriage when divorce almostimpossible.
6. By the mid-19th century thousands of animals a day were being driven through the streets of what was by then the world’s largest city and,in the words of Charles Dickens, the area was “ankle deep in filth and mire”.
7. Live livestock market closed 1855 as location causing too many problems.
8. Current meat market built 1868 by Horace Jones (also designed Leadenhall and Billingsgate markets and Tower) Bridge.
9. Hours of trading 2am – approx. 8am
Researching the historical events at the Smithfield Maret, the history of livestock market was very interesting. So I decided to search deeply about livestock market at Smithfiled. These are old vintage drawing, and photographs from livestock market in Smithfield market.
From the images, I got a rough idea which are about animal rights and the traces of time. But the idea about animal rights, it could be too aggressive cause there are still wholesale market opes and it could be unpleaseant to people who works there. I need to get to more detailed ideas and how to visualise it. But from this project, I want to represent the long history (how many times and events had been passed) of the Smithfield market and historical tale at the same time.

This is my final poster and mockup.
*self-evaluation : It was an experimental project for me to visual depression. I should have done some more experiment to visualise the depression, but the experiment was a bit lack. The cheesy mood and rough hand-writing was very matchy to the concept of project. But in a way, it seems too rough and not designed poster. I really like this kind of mood and concept, but can’t sure that if others like it too or not.
