skywing wip!!
Tumblr media
don't really have the energy to write out a bunch of lore (+ i wanna save that for later), but here's an uncolored wip of my skywing design :)
i'm not sure if i'm gonna keep the spade tail because i feel like it's pretty weird to have a fleshy/scaled tail when the rest of the dragon is feathered, but i do like how it makes it more dragon-like! plus, maybe the tail works the same as the scaled legs
also, they have wings specialized for gliding, their legs are inspired by songbird legs, and they emote with their ears :D

#1: abalone of the seawings! his coloration is much more based on IRL abalone shells than on his canon coloration :D
(i'm starting a little project where i draw a whole lot of WoF dragons, based on personal headcanon, names, and their descriptions/roles in the series! i'll be going in alphabetical order, and posting a new design whenever i feel like it. might make a blog specifically for it, but i'm gonna see how my motivation is first)

one concept i've been bouncing around is death symbology for the different tribes... in particular, i think it'd be really cool if rainwings took the color white as being an ill omen and a sign of death, because their scales turn white when knocked unconscious (and presumably when dead? though correct me if i'm wrong). i miiight make some art / concepts based on that :)

rainwing time
Tumblr media
here's my rainwing redesign! i noticed that my previous posts got pretty long, so i'm gonna put headcanon / design notes under the cut :)!
rainwing skin works the same as chameleon skin- their color is changed via the control of pigment cells under the surface of the skin
their skin is fragile compared to most tribes, contributing to stereotypes of rainwings being unsuited for battle
because of the complex structure of their skin and its use in social displays, rainwings are much more particular about hygiene than most other tribes
most rainwings do not wear piercings or tattoos, as they damage their skin and remove a bodily area's ability to change color
rainwings have excellent vision!
rainwing tails are prehensile and can pick up objects or hold their total body weight with ease
rainwings are capable of gliding, but not true powered flight. their smaller wings are more suitable to weaving between tree than flying through the open air
they are capable of leaping incredibly high, akin to a flea or a frog. this, in conjunction with their gliders, replace any day-to-day need for powered flight
despite being omnivorous, rainwings within the tribe eat only plant matter and find meat unpalatable. due to this culture, rainwings often find others dragons' omnivorous diets to be unsettling at first contact
rainwings are unique in that they have no single ruler. all tribal decisions are made by holding an open forum, and then all members voting for the solution
rainwings have sub-communities based around shared jobs. these are led by overseers, often the eldest or most experienced worker. the overseers' job is to organize and keep records
rainwings work fewer hours than other tribes, as they have no part in the war and thus have more plentiful time and resources.

FOLLOW UP TO THIS because i don't wanna forget the idea:
flamescales are born featherless, giving more of a visual differentiation between them and most skywings. they can't fly, which can contribute to a feeling of otherness in a society that so intimately loves the sky
on the subject of failed designs, here are some different drafts for skywings under the cut. i've yet to settle on a final :/

so far i've got the drafts for a post explaining rainwings and a post explaining general fashion for all the tribes. one problem i've got is that i really want to go over all the tribes, but i haven't settled on a conept that i really like for skywings yet, despite having given it a shot like 3 different times </3

time for some seawing headcanons / worldbuilding!
- seawings are incapable of flight, as their "wings" are a really a specialized membrane for swimming
- their horns resemble branching coral, and are often ornately decorated by royalty
- seawings can walk and run on land, but it requires more stamina for them then it would for most other tribes
- seawings have a thick layer of fat to help regulate their temperature in the ocean
- while it is not universal, most seawings have counter-shaded pigmentation in their scales (light underbellies and dark upper halves)
- their bellies are soft and pliable, a feature which leaves them vulnerable to attack from below
- because of their generally softer physique, seawings are often stereotyped by other tribes as being coddled and well-fed. this is only a stereotype, though. a lean seawing is a malnourished one
- seawing families living in deeper waters tend towards hatching dragons with darker scales, and these individuals can often be identified as such by other seawings. this difference is relatively obscure to other tribes
- seawings are known for their frequent use of organic materials in art and construction, including hemp, seashells, coral, and much more
----------------------------------------------------
- the seawing royal line is well-established and generally popular with their tribe. their rule is commonly recognized as legitimate both within and beyond the seawing tribe
- seawings are free to live wherever they want, but most living within the bay of a thousand scales choose the summer or deep palace over living independently
- the summer palace and the deep palace are both bustling metropolises, though there are very few non-seawing dragons living in the summer palace, and there are none in the deep palace
- the seawings have the largest population of any tribe due to the abundance of food and lack of competition provided by their home
- after the war of sandwing succession and the partial destruction of the summer palace, many seawings have fled to the deeper waters of the sea of a thousand scales. this catastrophic event has led to xenophobia and a general distrust of strangers among seawings, which may forecast future troubles in maintaining peace
(color references taken from the wof wiki and adapted- these are not character designs, but rather examples of palette application)

i'm too tired right now to write a full caption / summary of nightwings, so i'll just put down a bunch of notes!
- nightwings are TINY! on average, they're the smallest out of all the phyrrian tribes
- they have exceptional night vision and an outstanding sense of smell
- their tail is prehensile, and can be used as a sort of extra limb, though unlike rainwings, nightwings' tails cannot hold their full body weight for extended periods of time
- nightwings are the most dextrous of all the tribes, with five different limbs that are capable of grasping and handling objects
- they are knucklewalkers! similar to sandwings, nightwings only have four limbs for mobility, as their wings and forelegs are fused
- proportionally to their body size, nightwings have the largest horns of any tribe. they will often decorate and carve intricate designs into them, and will keep and display the horns of loved ones
- they are omnivorous
- the starry patterns on nightwing wings are passed down genetically, but deviation is very common. nightwings have several superstitions revolving around the density and distribution of "stars."
- nightwings have exceptional camouflage, especially in low-light environments. this has helped to maintain the myth that they are more physically intimidating than they truly are
- they're scrunkly!

first up, sandwings!
sandwings are built to be lightweight and efficient desert hunters. they are a unique tribe in that they have no third set of limbs / wings, which enables them to run quickly and cover long distances. another unique sandwing feature is their large scorpion tail, which contains a deadly venom that can kill a full-grown dragon within hours. this tail is made of a chitin-like material, and is given limited flexibility by many small joints that allow the tail to furl and unfurl.
because the desert is fairly inhospitable to other tribes, sandwings have had little inter-tribal competition for land. out of all tribes, sandwings have the most territory and are the most spread-out. however, rather than forming one large kingdom, sandwing society is structured more like an interconnected web of factions and clans.
the sandwing monarchy is a relatively recent political development. before the war of sandwing succession, it acted solely as a representative on the stage of inter-tribal politics and was not recognized as a central authority by many of the scattered sandwing clans.
in more recent times, many of the old clans have been dissolved and subsumed by the kingdom of sand. the political status of remaining clans exists ambiguously, as some are considered tribe traitors while others are considered to be citizens of the kingdom of sand.
because of this change, there are those who suspect that the war of sandwing succession was started in part to unite sandwings under one banner: that of the royal line.

intro post
hi! it's been a while since i've used tumblr, so i figure that a re-introduction is a good idea. (i've forgotten a lot of the tricks with post formatting and tagging, so please be patient with me)
this blog is a place for me to post my own wings the fire headcanons / worldbuilding / designs / OCs / etc. i'm not sure if i'll reblog any posts, but regardless all original posts will be tagged #dc-al-fine
a lot of my art and writing deviates heavily from canon!! everything is based loosely off the setting and basic concepts of WoF, but many specific details are entirely from my own thoughts.
important: except for OCs, all of the concepts and designs i post are FREE TO USE. no need to ask! credit is appreciated, but not necessary.
if i think of anything else important, i'll edit this post to include that. in the meantime, have a good day.
