By the time my Papaw was mining coal the coal companies had stopped using these. Holding it makes me feel closer to him these days. Growing up in the arms of the #appalachianmountains coal was something I was very familiar with. It heated my grandparents home for many years, it fed their family. It fed a lot of families back then. Then it left. Left a lot of people without work, left them feeling abandoned and forgotten about. Some people followed the jobs out of Kentucky, but my Papaw stayed right there in the holler. This visit home I came back with some precious artifacts from my childhood. Items far more valuable than any gold this world can offer, and more precious that rubies or diamonds. The gun rack my Papaw Sizemore had hanging in his room for as far back as my memories go. The quilt rack that my Mamaw Sizemore used to sew a quilt for all her grandchildren so we would all have a wedding gift from her even after she’d gone. Papaw Sizemore’s plow that he and Pete the mule collected miles and miles on as I sat on Pete’s back, my chubby little hands gripping his harness. The hames that my Papaw Gross used on many a horse to haul logs down from the hills to build a life for a family of two that turned into a family of seven. While I sifted through dust and dirt with my own mom and dad to pull these memories out, I admit, I fought back tears for the memories that I would desperately love to return to and experience again. #StJude is venerated as the "patron saint of lost causes". This practice stems from the belief that few Christians invoked him for misplaced fear of praying to Christ's betrayer, Judas Iscariot, because of their similar names. The ignored Jude thus supposedly became quite eager to assist anyone who sought his help, to the point of interceding in the most dire of circumstances.
