That is lesbian erasure. You are taking Pearl’s identity away which is very important for lesbians. Why is it so bad to just accept that Pearl is a lesbian? She is the only confirmed one in the show. Why do you think it’s okay to take that away?

And a headcanon is a theory or idea that fits in with the canon narrative without changing anything so you cannot “headcanon” Pearl as anything other than a lesbian because it goes against what we know in canon. She has not shown any attraction or even positive interaction with any gender other than female-coded characters.

Why pan!Pearl headcanons are not lesbian erasure

I’ve never gotten involved in fandom arguments about headcanons, I don’t think. But my friend, @alorabora, raised some good points on whether pan!Pearl headcanons are lesbian erasure and I thought I’d throw in my two cents. (idk what I headcanon Pearl as, just fyi)

TL;DR : Pan!Pearl headcanons are not lesbian erasure as it doesn't erase Pearl's canonical attraction to another female-coded character. Note: female-coded doesn't necessarily indicate female identity, especially for aliens with no gender binary in their society.

@lavabendinggemqueen​ uses a circular argument to claim that an ‘explicitly’ identified lesbian!Pearl’s identity is being erased. Which, if Pearl were explicitly identified as lesbian, could be considered lesbian erasure.

However, the only canonical fact is that Pearl has had attraction to another female-coded character. Generalizing, you could say "Pearl has experienced homoromantic/homosexual attraction." This could canonically support both a lesbian and pansexual Pearl, depending on how you read or interpret canon. Which is what "headcanons" are all about, right?

Considering that the creator has confirmed that the gems have no sexual dimorphism, nor a gender binary, the gems being female-coded in a human society doesn't necessarily reflect a female identity. Gems could non-binary by human standards and just fall into whatever labels are easier to fit into human society: such as "woman" or "mother/parent." Such a headcanon has some ground in what we know thus far, and does not contradict canon.

But even if we ignore the inherent obstacle of projecting human perceptions of gender identity and sexuality onto non-human alien life forms, Pearl can still be read as a lesbian, or bi, or pan, or ace, etc and still fit into canon. It is all up to interpretation of fans, especially as it can provide much-needed representation to these oft erased minorities.

Lesbian representation is important, and reading Pearl as one is important, as @lavabendinggemqueen points out. Similarly, pansexual representation is equally important, and reading Pearl as pan is obviously important to the anon and others. Identity isn't necessarily restricted to portrayed actions, and so it is definitely possible that one could interpret Pearl as pan. To object to that reading on the grounds of "she just is, why can't you just accept that?" comes off as a little close-minded.

If you met a woman who had a significant romantic relationship with another woman, it'd be just as easy to wonder if she were a lesbian as it would be to wonder if she were bi or pan. In real life, she might tell you how she identifies. Pearl is fictional, so fans explore these different possibilities in their headcanons. If the anon isn't forcing others to agree with their headcanon, simply sharing their thoughts on their blog isn't lesbophobic in and of itself.

PS: A 'twisting' of canon is common among headcanons, especially surrounding queer ones. So to discredit headcanons that do so doesn’t really make sense.
