Okay, so I know we’re all (understandably) upset over the Duffers killing Eddie because he’s such a beloved character, but what irks me the most about his sacrifice/death is 1) it was wholly unnecessary in that situation. Almost like they were looking for a reason to kill him. Because, at that moment, the situation hasn’t become any more dire; the demobats are still distracted, they’ve patched up the holes in the trailer, and their reinforcements are holding up. If any of those changed, I could accept Eddie running out to fight the demobats himself. But they didn’t, and Eddie has proven to not be that stupid (one of his key traits is being resourceful and handy in a non-traditional way as opposed to book smart), so it just seemed really random.

And then 2) it reinforced that even if you “die a hero,” your legacy won’t change. The biased ways people perceive you won’t change, and you will always be the town freak. For a show that’s built upon solidarity between outcasts, that is such a bleak and hypocritical message to be sending. The fact that no one seems to have tried to fight the narrative of Eddie being pressured dead on the run, that Dustin especially is just accepting that the townsfolk won’t see the error of their ways, is so so upsetting.

There’s the argument that this concluded his character arc, with him finally not running, which is true, but it still was done pretty distastefully and disrespectfully of his character. What would have been much better in my opinion is to have Eddie running from Jason/the mob/the cops, but Eddie decides to finally stand up to them. Bonus points if Dustin is with him and Eddie has to protect him, thus adding witnessed testimony that he’s a hero and not a murderer. Like I understand that sometimes a character’s arc does end with them dying, but there was so much wasted potential with Eddie.
