A little snippet for Charles Rowland Week!
Day 1 - Brawn
(cw: under eating, light discussions of weight and body image)
The food at St. Hil’s sucked arse so bad that Charles actually lost weight when he first started attending.
It hadn’t just been the usual British style of bland which was a tad boring but perfectly fine all things considered. Nothing could compare with his mom’s cooking, of course, but that was to be expected. No, the food at Hil’s was actually bloody gross. Zero seasoning on anything. Mushy veggies and grainy potatoes. And there was always at least one kid sick with food poisoning for the week thanks to a batch of undercooked chicken. Half the boys ended up going home early on Fridays to save themselves from the dreaded Mystery Meat Dinner, but Charles had no such luxury, and in that first year especially, he hadn’t gotten close enough with the older lads on the cricket team yet to get a ride to the closest fast food joint when everyone else fled.
So between maybe not totally eating as much as he should and playing loads of sport with the lads, Charles had lost some weight. Even when he went home for holidays and breaks and his mom tried to get some more meat on his bones, it would shed right off again as soon as he got back to school.
So, yeah, maybe he’d been a little thinner than he would’ve liked when he died. And maybe he didn’t love the way he was forever locked in this version of his body, just barely able to see the ridges of his ribs under his skin or the lankiness of his arms that never had the chance to fill out proper.
On the brightside, though, being stuck at his leanest meant that people always underestimated him when it came time for a fight.

Hope you enjoy the prompts! We're excited to see what you create.
You're welcome to make any kind of fan creation: fic, art, gifs, videos, or anything else you can dream up!
We know the characters have extremely different speech cadences, so if you pick the quote prompt for a given day, feel free to tweak the wording as needed for whichever speaker you choose.
And most of all: HAVE FUN!

What if Charles saw one of the endings in theatre, but didn’t hear anything about the other versions afterwards? So he is absolutely gobsmacked when he sees the other endings with Edwin several years later?
As Edwin is watching the film, he’s trying to solve the mystery right along with the characters, commenting aloud to Charles about his theories, and Charles is just smirking and nodding along knowing that Edwin is falling for one of the red herrings. And then to Charles’s absolute astonishment, in the third act, things are starting to go different than he remembered?? And it looks like Edwin’s right??? And Charles feels like he’s losing his mind cause no, it definitely didn’t happen like this and he’s freaking out, saying as much to Edwin, who is now gloating about the prowess of his deductive skills and not falling for Charles having tried to lead him astray
Before finally the second ending starts up and Charles is having the craziest Deja vu and the office is in chaos for the rest of the night
I was watching clue (1985) the movie based after the board game when I wondered.
Has Charles seen the movie? Technically, he could've the timelines match up. And if he has did he show edwin?

Ghosts’ forms are largely a matter of self-perception; Edwin and Charles know this as regards clothing, and injuries, and so forth, but Edwin rather abruptly realizes that it applies on a much larger level when he sees Charles shirtless shortly following a spell that involved reliving memories, and finds that Charles is significantly more muscular than when he died, after decades of thinking of himself as “the brawn”.
After regaining his composure (we won’t address why that was necessary) he mentions this to Charles, who says “Oh, yeah, you hadn’t noticed? Your waist is way more grabbable than when we met.” “Grabbable?” “I meant… slender.” “Grabbable?” “I didn’t want to mention anything in case you felt… but I don’t think you’ve actually lost any muscle. Just, you know. The waist.” “Grabbable?”
#Edwin’s tiny little waist during the failed love confession of ep 6 makes me go feral#grabbable!!#grabbable💕#dead boy detectives#dbda#edwin payne#charles rowland#payneland

Edwin has always been prone to sickness, "Vitamin D deficiency," according to the doctor that Charles forced him to go see. Of course, this prompted Charles to make a bad joke about "How can you be deficient, love? I give you the D as often as I can" followed by a wink and a laugh when Edwin shoved at him.
He doesn't get sick as often anymore, but that's not saying much, given that his levels are slow to rise despite the prescribed vitamins.
Charles, on the other hand, has seemingly been blessed with an immune system that will fight off anything. He gets the sniffles maybe once a year, and even that isn't a real cold, not like Edwin, who becomes feverish and bedridden.
So many times, Edwin has shoved him away, claiming, "I'll get you sick if you kiss me," only for Charles to kiss him anyway and not get sick at all.
"Just means I was made for you, don't it? So that I can take care of you when you get sick"
And he does, Charles dotes on him, brings him tea, and makes sure there's easily swallowed foods in the fridge. He puts cough drops on the nightstand, with the water pitcher and so many soft tissues. He makes sure there's nasal spray and tv shows on low volume and plenty of blankets around. And then he kisses Edwin goodbye as he goes to work and tells him to rest, and Edwin has never felt this loved before.
No one took care of him like this before Charles. Not even the nanny that was hired from age 2-6 was this attentive, even though she was paid to be.
His parents never even stepped into his room when he was sick as a child, so he's never learned what to do with affection.
But now Edwin can rest, knowing he's loved, waiting for Charles to come home and kiss him again, to tell him about his day and how he missed him. It makes it so he doesn't mind being sick anymore, might even miss it, just a little bit, when he's healthy again, being this tended to.
The best part is when Charles does comes home, presses his cool face to his fever-warm one, and asks if he feels any better. Presses kisses to his jaw, cheeks, and the bridge of his nose. Slips his fingers under Edwins pajamas and whispers "sorry sorry" when it makes him hiss from the cold.
Edwin loves this, even though his joints ache. But Charles is so careful when he rearranges Edwins body to where he wants it. He loves it even though his head pounds and his throat is sore, but Charles is so gentle, trying not to jostle him too much, not to force too many sounds from him.
He knows Charles loves it, too. He loves how Edwins body is warmer than usual, how he's so pliant and sleep-soft and willing. How his voice sounds scratchy from the get go, his breath short and gasping.
It was an odd thing, no one's ever wanted him, not this much, and if they did, they seem to want to punish him for it. And then came Charles, with eager hands and dark eyes, reaching for him always, always. He still doesn't know what to do with affection, except lay there and take it, and hope it lasts forever.

Another day, another Dead Boy Detectives question! ✨
In the hopes of getting the fandom tag trending and getting more eyes on Dead Boy Detectives, please use the tag "dead boy detectives" when you reblog to reply.
Today's question:
What's one cursed winter-themed item you think Tragic Mick might sell?
#there’s an ice sprite living in that bad boy so you gotta be nice to it too :)#dead boy detectives#dbda#save dead boy detectives#tragic mick

Stairs.
I wonder if Charles is thinking about the parallels or just decided he needed to say it now, for no particular reason.
This is a commission for @asidian who always makes me super happy with their comments and analysis. Hope I managed to make you happy with this one!
