Supercharging Your Fermented Foods
Supercharging Your Fermented Foods
Have you cultivated a love for fermented foods yet? Fermented foods are highly celebrated right now, and for good reason. They can help improve your digestion, support healthy gut flora balance, and even help you look and feel better.  Making a high quality ferment is as easy as soaking fresh vegetables in a salt water brine for about a week. This allows for a natural beneficial bacterial growth…

One Patient's Battle with Biofilm
One Patient’s Battle with Biofilm
Endlessly treating infections with no improvement is frustrating, time consuming, expensive and over time, can lead to more resistant issues. This was the case for one patient who battled chronic fatigue, recurrent sinus issues, SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), numerous chronic infections and other tormenting symptoms.
In her case, we combined an elimination diet, biofilm disruption,

Icky Sticky Biofilm
Icky sticky biofilm. What is it? How do you get it? How do I know if I have it? And what can I do about it?
What is biofilm?
Biofilm is a collection of microbes that adhere to a surface, enclose themselves in a sticky protective coating called an extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) matrix, and are surrounded by an aqueous solution or fluid. The purpose of the microbes forming the biofilm is…

Reseach Smesearch: What to Do When Evidence Based Medicine Fails
Reseach Smesearch: What to Do When Evidence Based Medicine Fails
Warning: This is an opinion paper by Dr Lisa Giusiana. No research has been done to prove or disprove this theory. Whether you are a practitioner or a patient, the intention here is to encourage you to think!
As doctors, we are trained to search the medical research literature for what has been proven effective as far as diagnostic methods and treatment protocols. It is somewhat assumed that…

Reading Between the Lines of Your Blood Work Results
Reading Between the Lines of Your Blood Work Results
Typical scenario: New patient comes in, we do the health history, discuss a few things, I recommend a full blood panel work-up to get started. The patient quickly informs me that they already went to their doctor and the blood work was fine.
Fine? Then why do you feel the way you do and come in afflicted by x,y,z? Hmm. . .

The Importance of Good Adrenal Health and How to Achieve It
The Importance of Good Adrenal Health and How to Achieve It
Back around the year 2000, my whole world broke wide open. I went to my first Functional Medicine seminar and learned about the role that the adrenal glands play on basically every function in the body.
So what does that mean, exactly? Well, if you take a look at the chart above, you’ll notice that the adrenal glands (center circle) affect all of those other functions such as:
Pain and…

How to Determine if Your Stomach Acid is Too High or Too Low
How to Determine if Your Stomach Acid is Too High or Too Low
In cases like heart burn, gastric reflux or indigestion, it is usually automatically assumed that the patient must have too much acid in the stomach. Too much acid is correct. But the real question is, “Which acid and where is it coming from?” And how can you tell if it’s too high or too low?
Physiology Lesson
In modern-day Western Medicine, it is assumed that this excess acidic state of the…

5 Kinds of PMS
5 Kinds of PMS
You’re exhausted. And cranky. You’re not sure if you’re just depressed and anxious, or if you’re depressed and anxious because you’ve been dealing with a massive headache all day. You’d give anything for a tub of Ben and Jerry’s and a bag of potato chips. Oh, and trying to stuff yourself into your favorite pair of jeans? Yeah right! Then it hits you. . .
It’s that time of the month.
Men, if…

The Importance of Hydrochloric Acid for Proper Digestion
The Importance of Hydrochloric Acid for Proper Digestion
Hydrochloric Acid is part of a gastric secretion that is made in the parietal cells of your stomach. It has multiple functions that contribute to digestion and immunity.
Protein Digestion
Most people think that HCl digests their protein, especially meat and animal protein. What actually happens is that it combines with pepsin, and that is what digests the protein bonds in meat.
To illustrate,…

3 Free Things You Can Do to Improve Digestion
3 Free Things You Can Do to Improve Digestion
You’re out to dinner with a friend. The food arrives, beautifully presented. You look over your choices, inhaling the delicious aroma, consciously deciding which item on your plate you’d like to taste first. You choose the grilled salmon with avocado soy drizzle, cut off a bite sized piece and take your first taste. You savor the saltiness of the sauce, admire the perfectly grilled outer crunch,…

A Different Perspective on Inflammation
A Different Perspective on Inflammation
You might describe inflammation as a reaction in the body that causes redness, swelling, pain, stiffness, fever, or that the area is warm to the touch. You know, like when you sprain your ankle and within minutes it’s the size of a grapefruit. That’s pretty obvious inflammation.
But what about the silent hidden inflammation that’s inside your body, the stuff no one sees or feels or talks about?…

Pan-Seared Zucchini with Lemon Basil Drizzle
Pan-Seared Zucchini with Lemon Basil Drizzle
One of my favorite vegetables is pan-seared zucchini. I love the way it gets all blackened and crispy on the outside, and delicious on the inside. Zucchini is also one of the easiest vegetables to digest, making it a great healing food.
So, when I came across this recipe by Whole Foods Market, I had to try it. And it was a hit, so I’m sharing it here.
Ingredients:
3 tablespoons extra-virgin…

What is SIBO?
One of my specialties in practice is helping people who suffer from a condition we call SIBO which stands for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth. Many people who are diagnosed as having Irritable Bowel, Leaky Gut Syndrome and/or Candida overgrowth are actually dealing with a SIBO situation and don’t even realize it. Here is a blog article I posted on my other site EndSIBO.com. There, you will…
