The Moving Child

I have never been one for attachments

The many moves I have taken

They numb my senses

They ruin my passions

The amazing feeling of permanence

It is foreign to me

I started in a land of cattle and bluebonnets

A land of family and cowboy hats

Its Single great Star, Watching over everyone, alone

It only lasted four years

And then they moved us

The next place, was different

Its rocky eastern coast mixed with sweet southern charm

Its loving old dominion providing new friends

I was a fool to think we'd stay

After two years, they moved us again

The third time, I broke my own promise

This new land of golden mountains and deserts

It drew me in, and I was consumed

The wide valleys and scorching dry heat

I walked the line between nature and magic

It was the most fantastical dream to live

But of course, all dreams must come to an end

For after eight glorious years

They whisked us away once more

The fourth new world, I was determined not to break

But the people of the old north entrapped me

Their tar-covered heels leaving footprints of friendship

I adored my two years in that river of bliss

Then they cut the rope, and we floated away

We floated for what felt like forever

Out of the land of the tar-heels

Past that loving old dominion

And away from that golden land of magic

To which I fear I may never return

We floated all the way back to that land of bluebonnets

The Lone Star twinkling in a greeting as we returned

I climbed the stairs of that old house

Reliving memories from summers long ago

Finally, I was home again

But still I long for those golden mountains

Those shining deserts and deadly valleys

The yearning for that feeling of nature and magic

It clashes with my love for home

And tears me apart

“I am not one for attachments,” I claim

But I am a liar

For the forces of the desert mountains

And the powers of my southern homeland
