A project we are proud to be supporting, 'Twenty Two' is a photographic exploration of the shadow-self by Hamish Duncan. Hamish is an amazing guy, a real inspiration to us and we want to help him get this project off the ground! Hamish had a life-changing snowboarding accident at 22 that took him on a long journey of recovery both inside and out. He writes: "Twenty-Two is a call to action for all of us to spend more time outdoors. A chance to connect with nature for better mental health. I believe the heart of photography is to connect with the world around us and share our true perspective with others." Please support his passionate endeavor to inspire many more people and to get us all opening up about mental health and taking care of ourselves by whatever creative means works for us. Jenny Lewis is a contributing TCPM photographer and we LOVE her work.
She recently shared a very powerful image with us that was part of the Portrait of Britain Exhibition 2017. The portrait is of Corrine Jones, captured just 6 days after she managed to escape the horrific Grenfell Tower fire earlier this year.
She tells the British Journal of Photography: "I wanted to capture a young woman’s strength born out of tragedy."
We wanted to share it to thank Jenny for her contribution to our cause and also to pay our respects to the victims of the fire with the six month anniversary coming up next week.
Thank you Jenny and please read more here on Corrine Jones and Jenny's story on capturing this striking image: http://www.bjp-online.com/…/jenny-lewis-portrait-of-britai…/

Here is a project we very much hope to see succeed and reach as many people as possible to raise awareness on the silent illness behind many men's lives...
Ben Akers has chosen to embark on creating a documentary called 'Steve' which is a very personal and moving story on his childhood best friend who tragically died by suicide in 2014.
He is now looking to raise money to support this much needed film to raise awareness on the subject, getting more people talking, sharing and ending this very sad cycle which is seeing far too many men take their own lives in the UK.
Please take a look at the trailer, spread the word and help Ben reach his target. The more we support inspiring people like Ben to get this work out into the world, the less men have to feel the only solution is death and to suffer in silence.

Thank you! Team TCPM

Lloyd’s of London & TCPM
This is the moving photo that won the Lloyd's of London in-house photography contest with Beazley last Thursday in support of International Men’s Day 2017.
Stephan Dequaire is behind the winning piece and will be part of the 2018 Calm Photography Movement exhibition.
He writes:
Photo title: Table for One
"This image is the first of a photo series that explores social isolation in everyday life and the links with mental health. It was photographed specifically for the Calm Photography Movement and depicts a socially isolated man going from one meal to the next without much social interaction. The hands free clock on the wall symbolises the different and infinite sense of time experienced by socially isolated people. The crude meal on the table shows a clear lack of self care whilst the female portrait on the wall  links the subject to happier childhood memories.
I wanted to photograph a scene that encompassed both masculinity and mental heath and didn't want to compromise on the gravity of the subject."
Thank you so much Stephan for being part of TCPM.

Jim Fenwick explains more on the long-term project behind his incredible photo 'Stretch' that was kindly donated to TCPM & is now exhibiting at Lloyd's of London:
"For the last three years I have been working on a project about a boxer from Ghana. Richard Commey comes from the poor coastal neighbourhood of Jamestown in Accra. Within Jamestown you will find the toughest place in all of Ghana, Bukom. In Bukom men fish, fight or hustle. Richard is a 'Bukom Boy’.
It has been an amazing journey full of excitement, heartache and emotional reflection. The project will conclude after Richard fights for the world title in 2018. Richard Commey gives hope to many in Ghana. Hope that one can find a better future.
My work tends to explore community along with the sense of one's place in the world. I have different approaches depending on my subject matter and project. My next body of work will look at attachment theory and will be shot using a different approach and methodology."
See more of Jim's photography via his website & a massive thank you to Jim Fenwick for making TCPM possible!

The Calm Photography Movement & Lloyd’s of London
The focus for this year’s International Men’s Day event at Lloyd’s is to highlight men’s mental health issues especially in the workplace, discussing the stigma associated with it and encouraging more men to ‘speak up’.
So this year Lloyd’s of London teamed up with us to create a smaller version of May’s exhibition to be displayed at their famous building in Lime Street, London.
There will be the main event itself on the 22nd November but proceeding this will be a photographic competition and a display of our TCPM exhibition which will then be available to purchase through a silent auction where all proceeds will go to CALM.
We are very excited to be working with Lloyd’s on such an important subject. More news coming soon!

Elias, Austin, TX
Often plagued by depression, anxiety and post traumatic stress issues - these travellers hit the the road in search for freedom & happiness. Michael Joseph’s Lost & Found series is truly powerful. He helped us with TCPM by entering his portrait photography so we can begin to re-picture mental health & our attitudes towards masculinity.

Joel Robison - ‘A Visitor’
Sometimes it just finds me. When I'm alone and when I think it's just another day, it flies in and lands in front of me. This big black confusing being that follows me and keeps me wondering what is happening. It leaves almost as quickly as it arrives, suddenly and quietly and then again I'm left without the visitor.
**SOLD** during our silent auction at the TCPM exhibition to re-picture the way mental health issues are seen. By changing the visuals associated with mental health, we hope to improve people’s attitudes and behaviours towards those who are affected.

Tif Hunter
The talented Tif Hunter, who was one of our Calm Photography Movement photographers, had an Open Studio this weekend and we went along to see him in action shooting his incredible and truly unique, tintype portraits.
Tif works from Bermondsey Studios in London. We watched him create a portrait of a gentleman whose great-grandfather started a photographic business in Hungry that is still going making him the fourth generation!
Tintypes are handmade, one-off images created using a 19th century technique developed in the early days of photography.
By combining this with 21st century lighting and sensibilities, Tif is creating unique images of timeless beauty that borrow from photography's past, but are very much of the present.
To find out more, visit http://www.tifhunter.com
Thank you Tif for the incredible experience and for being part of TCPM!

Baptism' by Diogo Duarte for TCPM
Up for an award next week at the East West Art Award Competition - Diogo Duarte is a London-based Image Maker specialising in self-portraiture and psychological portraits.
He writes: "Baptism is part of a self-portrait project where I ‘perform’ different aspects of my personality in front of the camera with the intention of creating an inner dialogue of self-acceptance. Aspects of my personality that were once hidden away, are amplified and exaggerated in front of a surreal backdrop so their existence can no longer be ignored. I started suffering from severe anxiety and turned to photography again to alleviate the pain. My self-portrait project has been about the process of coming to terms with my feelings and experiences, and seeing those same feelings and experiences in a different light."
Thank you Diogo for being part of our movement and we will see you at the awards next week!
