A Toast to Free Water

I’m terrible at making character playlists. I don’t care to seek out songs for them, I just wait until I happen to come across songs that work.

Meaning that I don’t have a full playlist for any of these characters, but several characters do have one or two songs that I associate with them. (They wouldn’t all work for an overall TLO7-vibes playlist, many are rather character-specific.)

Okay, but is there any practical reason for the past Leagues to have created puzzle traps that allow a person to open up the mangleborn prisons if they’re in the know? Am I forgetting something? It’s not like the mangleborn are some last-reserve catastrophic weapon that might be needed someday, they only want to kill and enslave humanity. I can’t think of a single reason why any rational person would think “letting one of these guys out will prevent some greater evil.” So why are there puzzle traps? Why not just permanently encase these things in eleventy-billion tons of supernatural cement? Like, it might not stop them from getting out when the stars are in their favor, but it would at least stop humans from being able to interfere with their imprisonment.

I’m going to take the Owl House route and give our brass trio different outfits for each “season” (book) of this series. This is just a first draft, I’ll probably change stuff later.

I’m not sure how I’ll change Archie’s outfit. Maybe I’ll slowly fade the brown into greyscale? I do know that I want the edges of his coat and scarf to get all ripped up when he gets crunched in the puzzle trap gears in book 1, so that when he first starts acting like a “monster,” his appearance is more jagged and torn to match the vibe. And then his scarf stays frayed at the ends through the rest of the series, because he’s fraying at the ends too. (That and he’ll ditch the Septemberist pin when he denounces the organization, which is a good visual support of his shift in thinking.)

Also, I haven’t even started trying to figure out how to draw Kitsune yet, but I’ve been thinking about how to use her outfit for storytelling as well.

Canon already says she wears all white because it’s the color of death, and everyone from her family/place of origin assumes that she’s long dead. It’s about how she has no meaningful connections to anyone, just slipping through the world like a ghost. But once she joins the League, she slowly begins to make friends with the other leaguers, and has important people in her life again. She is no longer as untethered as a ghost, she has people who actually care about her, and whom she cares about in return.

If I remember correctly, you’re supposed to layer a certain side of a kimono collar over the other, because you only fold it the other way when it’s being worn by the dead. So to line up with the “everyone thinks I’m dead” thing, Kitsune will wear her collar folded corpse-style. But at some point along the line, some part of the story that shows her starting to care about the others, she’ll start wearing the collar the alive way. Because she feels more alive now, has something to live for beyond momentary amusement. Additionally, she’ll add a few small touches of color into her outfit one-by one as the final book goes on, and in the epilogue scene, she’s not wearing any white at all.

No characters will comment on any of this in-universe, it will just be a subtle detail to support her directly-communicated character arc.

Anyway, I’ll have to look into Japanese color symbolism later to make sure I’ve got it right. And I’ll need to figure out exactly what uniform Clyde is wearing, and what Sings’ clothing would look like, and if the Karankawan pirates have any basis in a real-world culture or not…

There’s a reason I’ve been procrastinating drawing the other leaguers. So much research to do!

Alternatively, these stories would be a great place for a non-fan to start, because they’re like a little taste-test of whether you like the world and writing style, without spoiling anything that happens in the actual trilogy.

i love when a character has something terrible happen to them and as a result they see themself as, essentially if not literally, a ghost. and so that means they only can (and have to) do what ghosts do, ie get revenge and then cease to exist. easy as that. but then halfway through this ghost vengeance they realize hey actually i might still be a human person. with human needs. that’s incredibly inconvenient, considering how much i’ve invested in this whole ghost thing
