"hopefully we don’t get another editorial intervention like in Kekkaishi. " I never did finish Kekkaishi but I did enjoy the series awhile back. What exactly did the editors intervene?
Hello! This “editorial intervention” was never actually confirmed, but there were several implications in the volume omake of Kekkaishi that Tanabe’s never really got to write out exactly what she wanted, with all her initial ideas being turned down by her editor. There was plenty of discussion and speculation among fans about it, especially regarding Gen’s character and eventual death, considering how she stated Gen was her favorite character. Besides this, apparently it’s a thing that the Shonen Sunday (where Kekkaishi and Birdmen are serialized) have very strict editors.
Long story short, I may need to put a disclaimer on that line, haha. ^u^;;

Please read Birdmen, it has naked teenage boys (and girls), I know this sounds bad, but we need a fandom, also I’m desperate for people to scream with.
Thank you this has been a PSA.

Very yes, it’s gonna be that kind of series. I think I once saw someone ask if it gets to Tokyo Ghoul-level-shit-hits-the-roof, and the only thing I’ll say is that it gets extremely comparable, though maybe less gory/graphic and a lot more mental/emotional. The next chapter is particularly *clutches heart* for the baby birbs, and there are interesting revelations soon. We’ve been focusing on the squad for the most part as they discover stuff, but the world and setting are starting to expand, and the plot’s scope horizon will soon be visible.
The thing about Birdmen is that this kind of formula isn’t seen very much in manga. Like kitsoa said in this non-spoiler review, the initial setting reads very Western comic style, but with a twist of the generic shounen with the whole “hero,” “youth,” and “nakama” talks. It’s a kind of meshed East-meets-West thing, and the tagline is even “SF x Youth Juvenile.” I don’t see much sci-fi in the shounen demographic, it’s mostly some kind of supernatural/fantasy setting, and this is what sets Birdmen apart.
But even with this kind of outstanding plot, the true meat of the story relies on the characters, their own selves as well as their relations with each other. Eishi’s stream of consciousness sometimes gets to be a pain to TL and RD, but that’s exactly the kind of character he is--a grumpy, ranty little boy who has the tendency to bottle things up. There’s still a lot of food for thought in what he has to say, but since he doesn’t say it out loud, he just ends up misunderstood and disconnected from others. This theme can actually apply to all of the squad, and since it’s already been implied that the Seraphim show their true power as a group, the fact that the five of them have come together is what moves the story.
All in all, Birdmen is a very thoughtful series, and while there comes up a lot of things to chew on, it’s never too much (though sometimes I feel that there isn’t enough). I’m... not actually quite sure about it’s popularity in Japan, but there were a lot of color pages at point, so hopefully it will have a decently long run. There are still lots of questions without answers, and it would be amazing if it wraps up as intended. I have no doubt about Tanabe-sensei’s writing, and hopefully we don’t get another editorial intervention like in Kekkaishi.
GAHH Birdmen is just so good!!
Spoilers for Chapter 18. Read here.
Okay this is the part where I just… sit back in awe…
So this is gonna be that kinda series? Holy crap yes. Let’s dive right into plot. Let’s dig into trauma’s like it’s nothing. Let’s get RAW. Little girl’s an abused rape child… well damn. Takayama is creeping me the crap out like please stop I want to like you unconditionally but your giving me the willies and thats super bad bad bad, Oh! and how about we just snipe the flock’s personified sunshine while we’re at it!!!!!! Like muther flipping holy crap.
The thing about this series… is that it is so vaguely unsettling. You can’t pin it down because it feels so calculated. The characters feel almost too real. It’s both a tried and true superhero formula… with none of the standard methods of execution. It doesn’t even feel like a shonen manga!
…and that makes is so freaking unpredictable.
I’m not surprised because I could sense this potential, but there is a difference between knowing that a set up and execution has potential… and actually going through with it. I can tell things are just gonna keep getting better. This is a ride… dare I say flight that I am gonna stick with. There’s nothing like this series around as far as I can see.

Birdmen Non-spoiler Review
I wrote up this review for MyAnimeList and I thought I’d share it with tumblr. Without further ado. My really vague review of this really awesome story everyone should read.
Birdmen by Tanabe Yellow
Read here
Synopsis:
Bitter and depressed, third year middle school student Eishi Karasuma struggles to find enthusiasm from even the fantastical urban legend, the Birdman. Yet a freak accident leaves him and his motley company before the winged legend himself. Shrouded in mystery, this creature asks them a question…
I hate pushing excessive praise especially this early in a manga’s life, but with Tanabe Yellow’s Birdmen I feel safe to declare this an outstanding work. A story after my own heart, Birdmen explores the nuance of the typically coming-of-age, call-to-action hero stories with a unique sense of characterization, pacing, and tone. It’s a story that reads like a book, careful in the narrative climb and intensely detail oriented. From the poignant reaction panels to the excessive walls of text in a character’s thoughts, Tanabe-sensei spares no expense in making this story speak beyond its contemporaries’ status as superficial entertainment.
The characters are by far its greatest triumph. Distinct and memorable, the main cast has a strong look as well as defining characteristics that excel them beyond lifeless tropes. The main protagonist is so intensely explored that you are relating and sympathizing with him before the end of the first prologue. The biggest take away is their realism. The protagonist will probably touch upon an anxiety you’ve had before or his friend will muse something from your most mundane of pleasures. They’re given time to breathe and therefore they solidly drive the story to the point where the plot is a minor plus.
As you can glean, the pacing is noticeably slow. Tanabe-sensei takes the realistic approach to the exploration and discovery of the plots happenings. There’s almost a Western comic-book vibe to the initial origin story of these characters that contrasts the convoluted supernatural plots of most modern shounen series. Despite this comfortable pace, the wit is dashingly sharp. The humor is on point and natural, providing a good laugh most every chapter… sometimes in excess.
Finally with such confident characterization and pace, the tone results in something rather peculiar. The premise is slightly ontological, placing the protagonists in a rather mysterious and unexplainable situation and exploring them from there. It makes for an intriguing mystery and an unpredictable air to what seems like a standard premise. There are concerns behind every corner and the potential in each plotline feels mounting and probable. It makes for a hard to place and curious tone.
If you like a lot of high paced action and intensity, this series might not satisfy, but if you’re interested in a heartfelt and intriguing, coming-of-age, supernatural/ sci-fi plot with realistic characters and amazing execution, this might just be the holy grail in the manga world.  10/10

Birdmen flight018: SCRAMBLE is finally out! Go read it on jaiminisbox.com before Takayama flies away with it!
As a brief status update, flight018 is last chapter of Volume 4, and Volume 5 starts next chapter. Staff has been busy with the new site, so this got put on the backburner for a while, but hopefully we can churn out some faster releases! TLs are basically up to date to the latest chapter (Chapter 30/flight028), and I need people to join the protectorate of a new puppy that appears in a couple more chapters, so you can be sure I’ll be nagging the staff to speed things up.
flights014-017 were also updated, and a mistranslation on flight017/p32 corrected, so make sure to check those out.
Enjoy the cliffhanger ending that was too good to resist!
