Galleryyuhself - One of my favorite Calypsonians has come up with a very entrancing image for his latest music.
.......................................................................
Kurt Allen releases powerful song ''subconsciously'' on Emancipation Day, August 1st Port-0f-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago
- Trinidadian calypsonian and esteemed songwriter Kurt Allen is set to unveil his highly anticipated single titled "SUBCONSCIOUSLY" on Emancipation Day, August 1st, 2023.
The thought-provoking song addresses the pressing need for media outlets to prioritize and amplify the positive achievements of black individuals, while challenging negative stereotypes that perpetuate systemic biases."SUBCONSCIOUSLY" is an extraordinary piece of art that aims to ignite conversations about racial representation, equality, and the power of media influence. With his characteristic eloquence and poignant lyricism, Kurt Allen delves into the deeper societal implications of media portrayal and the critical role it plays in shaping public perceptions.

~Galleryyuhself~More opinions on the Emancipation advertisement.
                    .................................................................
Dungozoro Design (stupid/ignorant design)I wasn't surprised by the offensive advertisements by KFC and Stag beer recently. They actually work best as comedic skits - offensive bad humour. Except it's not. It’s the racist (racial) culture that produced it and the racist culture that does not have the mental capacity to acknowledge this historical genocide and how to celebrate the African culture on Emancipation Day. Of all days, corporate Trinidad, you are truly showing your ignorance. These adverts are definitely worthy of a do-over - says the design professor. Because the Black body has historically and systemically been violated, abused, killed, raped and made invisible. The Black culture has been denied its history in a country that is significantly (predominantly) Black - go figure. Neither ad has an image/identity of a Black person and the message is in the capitalist propaganda that reiterates purchase and consumption - not emancipation/freedom. In fact, the ad suggests that Black people are only empowered through consuming alcohol or eating chicken - racist stereotypes. And the Black power movement, symbolized by the fist, is subordinate to the capitalist corporate agenda - profit. Luckily I do not patronize either business. But before I end, let's take a keen look at the ethnic background of the designers (ad agency) and the owners of these companies. My academic suggestion - peer review outside of your cultural ethnic and corporate bubble. The visual language is real. Learn it before you offend people. Part of your bottom line might be at stake.

~Galleryyuhself~ I posted this earlier and decided NOT to comment on it as it is problematic and obviously so. Instead I shall put up an opinion by someone I know on Facebook and their response to the KFC advertisement instead. Free speech may not be as free as we think. Emancipate yourself from mental slavery
              .................................................................................
A week or so ago, BLACK vs BLANK was considered "racist." Shocking - yes,  Insensitive - yes, unnecessary - absolutely! Racist? I didn't see it and as such, I chose not to comment on the matter. There was a big uproar about that leader and her 'goons' being racist and disrespectful. Today on Emancipation Day, a company chose to feature their product in the forefront and place a black clenched fist in the background as a shadow.
The clenched fist is widely known as a symbol of protest and solidarity. The correlation between a drumstick and solidarity completely missed me and countless others and it was deemed offensive and tone deaf, trivialising the meaning behind the symbol. Let me say this: Just as I said in a video a few weeks ago regarding Black Lives Matters protests, "LET PEOPLE EXPRESS THEMSELVES HOW THEY FEEL FIT."
Caribbean people saw this global movement from an unfortunate and unjustifiable incident to speak up on matters of colourism, racism, nepotism, police brutality, sexism, classim etc and it was great to see some persons finally felt the courage to speak up on matters that have affected THEM on a personal level. This toxic culture of the "whataboutisms" and "allyuh want to get offended for everything" NEEDS  TO  STOP, We are not homogenous products being manufactured and spat out on a conveyor belt. We are unique individuals with feelings, different upbringings and have different perspectives, opinions and THAT'S OKAY If some people get offended or a bad vibe off of an ad, it doesn’t make them stupid, bad or petty. It makes them HUMAN and an INDIVIDUAL with feelings.
Not once did I go on anyone's wall who were offended by black vs blank to justify anything! I let PEOPLE BE! I let people be upset and express themselves. But it seems some of y'all get joy from opposing people and arguing. Some of y'all have turned social media into a toxic space because you want to go down fighting someone for their opinion because you are not affected, without trying to empathize or listen to the person. Hence why I took a break for one month and didn't miss it. Meanwhile corrupt politicians, businessmen jumping up happy like pappy with OUR taxpayers money for unfinished projects, misappropriation of funds and continue getting away with impunity while we fight about who thief more? And that was "back then."
What do we leave for our children if we can't have meaningful conversations and dialogues without jumping to attack and fight? There’s no need to be cruel or critical of someone because you don’t “get their point". You don’t HAVE to “get” it! Just respect their entitlement to have one!!With that being said, HAPPY EMANCIPATION TO ONE AND ALL! I've decided to post some of the ads I thought shared beautiful messages without being tone deaf.

~Galleryyuhself~ This was the replacement for the irresponsible, tone deaf racism that KFCTT provided and had to ALSO pull from their Emancipation Day greeting advertisement.
