Anyway Zuko and Aang have always had a lot of queer subtext such as metaphorically turning to face each other while laying down to sleep (two halves of the same bed) that requires a shirtless Zuko to turn his back on his nation's flag + added bonus of Zuko missing a love song because he and Aang were too busy saving each other

Zuko not denying the relationship allegations but asserting to June that he doesn't want the girl, he wants Aang

"I want the Avatar" not just his honour + "He's mine". The fact that Aang likewise represents Zuko's hope of going home only provides more layers

To elaborate:

In the au the four nations exist but no Avatar. Aang wasn't frozen and the political environment would be similar to the start of the 100-year war, except Zuko, Katara, and the others exist in the timeline. The Fire Nation has started killing air nomads beginning with the air temples and has been hunting down the remaining ones that are scattered around the world since.

Aang fled from the temples with Gyatso upon hearing about the fire nation hunting down air nomads. The first place they went was the southern water tribe, where he became close friends with Katara. However, they had to leave when the village was being threatened. After Gyatso's death, Aang disguises himself to live in the earth kingdom (hence the hair). He joins the ensemble in a theatre group and makes a masked friend...who doesn't reveal himself for years until he does one day.

Zuko spends time hiding behind the theatre, always watching since plays are one of the few things he enjoys. He talks to a newcomer and recognizes talent, but more than anything he grows attached to him because he was the first to show him kindness after his banishment. (this zuko was separated from Iroh earlier on :( ) But attachment turns to obsession...

Katara quickly became friends with the runaway airbender when she was young, but they soon had to part. Years after, she leaves her tribe with her brother to find allies against the fire nation's threats, and notices a familiar face but with a very different identity. She is doubtful of Aang's 'secret friend' and wants him to join her.

hear me out: ppl get so mad surrounding Aang/Katara or Katara/Zuko shipping… but this could just as easily be a Challengers type of situation, ykwim? imagine Aang doing that little slutty pose on the bed. imagine Zuko pathetically sleeping in his car. the make out scene. the make out scene.

I might get burned at the fandom stake here, but I personally think Zuko x Katara x Aang being a thing when they are older would be very interesting and hilarious. Just hear me out-

Katara and Aang, married, both looking at Zuko: "Hey so my wife and I saw you across the bar, and we saved the world together and all so, can I get you some tea?" kinda vibe.

Like the three of them are all each other's narrative foils and parallels. They circulate each other narratively and emotionally throughout the whole series and even comics. When they're all older restoring peace around the world, they would have all spent so much time together I like to think it would just, kinda Click for them

I was thinking about the Gaang post-war and I felt sadness for Aang. He was 12/13 at the end of the show, not even a proper teen yet. Who's going to teach him to be a man? Who does Aang go to for emotional support? I mean he has his friends but sometimes the comfort of a loving parental figure can't compare to the love from friends. Where's his home? When he has problems with his romance with Katara, who is his father figure?

It's pretty depressing. At least the Gaang have homes and communities to go home to.

I see Zuko and Aang being very close post-series, and I think Aang would go to Zuko for a lot of the "big brother" stuff, especially since Zuko learned from Iroh how to be a man. I also think Aang goes to Zuko for advice about Katara, since Zuko is both older and been through his own struggles with toxic masculinity, and since Zuko knows Katara really well and connects with a side of Katara that Aang often does not understand. Which I really think is an under-explored zutaraang dynamic, btw.

I also like to imagine that Aang post-series lives a nomadic lifestyle (something the series never actually shows), especially because his Avatar duties take him all over the world, and sometimes he takes his friends along with him. The air nomads are irreplaceable, but Aang also has homes all over the world, and his friends are his family, something I wish the comics had emphasized more with both Aang and Zuko, who also should not be living alone and isolated in the location of his abusive childhood. I think Aang and Zuko go on a lot of trips together and Aang just drops into the palace from time to time, so Zuko always keeps a window open.

Is it the acknowledgement and respect of Katara choosing Aang. Is it the delight over Aang and Zuko's bromance. Is it that Katara pulling multiple world leaders is a funny, delightful idea. Is it their increased likelihood of hijinks as a trio.

Is it that... the hatred displayed by zutaras was so disheartening that it permanently turned me off to a ship I would've otherwise been neutral-positive toward.
