Happy #WorldOkapiDay!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here is the first published image of an Okapi from a 1901 watercolor by ZSL fellow Sir Harry Johnston. Quite good #SciArt considering he hadn't yet seen a live one and only had a skin, skull, and verbal descriptions to work with! It was given the scientific name Okapia johnstoni in his honor. ("Okapi" was derived from its Indigenous name "o'api" from the local Lese tribe.)
See the plate in context with the original text here: https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/31888385#page/52/
🚨The Okapi is currently listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List.

The scimitar horned oryx, (Oryx dammah), also called the Sahara oryx, was once widespread across North Africa, but in the 1980’s the population began to plummet - largely due to the antelopes being hunted for their horns and meat. In 2000, the species was declared Extinct in the Wild by the IUCN Red List.
Today its fate has been reversed – the first species from our Extinct in the Wild global initiative to be downlisted.

A vet examines a tiny hazel dormouse, one of 10 that have been given the all-clear at conservation charity ZSL, ahead of their release into the wild next month. Each 20g dormouse had its heart and lungs checked and its eyes, ears, nose, teeth and fur examined. They were also microchipped and x-rayed to check their bones and overall health. Hazel dormice populations have decreased by a staggering 70% since 2000, but efforts to restore their populations have seen more than 1,000 dormice reintroduced into 25 woodland habitats since 1993. The dormice will be heading to a secret woodland location this summer - Photograph: ZSL
You can read more dormouse checkup info and see photos here.

Sanji likes dancing with his partners in the kitchen. He listens to music while he cooks and if Zoro or Law is passing through and he happens to be waiting on something, he’ll tug them into his arms to dance, humming along with the song.
Even if they roll their eyes, they both indulge him, every time.
One of Sanji’s favorite secrets is the time he saw Zoro and Law slow dancing in the kitchen, completely unaware of his presence. He never told them that he saw; he just holds that image close to his heart.

Day 370 of posting pictures of elephants.
Fun in the water
Hello,
If you've made an ask recently, and I didn't respond to it, I want you to know that it's nothing personal.
I made this blog to be about elephants, and when I've answered asks in the past, they're about elephants. (I also try to keep the number of posts on my blog the same as number of days so it's easier, but that's another thing.)
I've decided to not post advertisements for other animals, particularly voting contests.
Elephants do not have enough awareness as it is, I sometimes feel.
This is nothing against you, I promise, and I don't want to leave you hanging if you do not see your post come up.
And I hope this does not sound harsh, and I'm really sorry if it does. :X >.<
Sorry for the ramble
Sincerely,
elephantaday
