Happy #WorldOkapiDay!
Here is the first published image of an Okapi from a 1901 watercolor by ZSL fellow Sir Harry Johnston. Quite good #SciArt considering he hadn't yet seen a live one and only had a skin, skull, and verbal descriptions to work with! It was given the scientific name Okapia johnstoni in his honor. ("Okapi" was derived from its Indigenous name "o'api" from the local Lese tribe.)
See the plate in context with the original text here: https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/31888385#page/52/
🚨The Okapi is currently listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List.

I drew this back in the fall of 2020. It depicts a Vancouver Island Marmot (Marmota vancouverenis) and her pup. Vancouver Island Marmots are Critically Endangered with approximately 90 mature individuals remaining. You can learn more about them here: https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/12828/22259184

Ok since my last one of these suddenly got a lot of traffic and it’s a Wednesday, welcome back to IUCN Wednesday!
This was supposed to be about blue whales but some new information just came out which swayed me to these fluff balls
(Image description: An Amur leopard standing in the snow looking towards the camera)
The critically endangered Amur leopard, a fluffy and rare subspecies of leopard found in China and Russia. Their scientific name is Panthera pardus orientalis. They weight between 70 and 105 pounds and live between 10-15 years in the wild and 20 in captivity.
(Image description: side view of an Amur leopard walking along a log in a snowy forest)
These powerful cats take down prey three times their size, namely preying on boar and deer. Like their cousins, they often hide their kills in trees to return later.
(Image description: Current range map of Amur leopards, showing the extinct range stretching from Korea into China and eastern Russia, with a small area on the China/Russia border along the coast showing their extant range)
Unfortunately, life hasn’t been kind to these cats, severe habitat destruction and degradation had their extant range and population plummet. In the early 2000s there was only an estimated 30 individuals left in the wild.
While the wild population has increased to an estimated 100 individuals in recent years (180 in captivity) due to conservation efforts, they are still suffering due to climate change shrinking suitable habitat. Plus inbreeding, disease, and genetic bottleneck from the small population size.
(Image description: two amur leopard cub with their mouths open looking towards the camera)
Not all hope is lost however, these two angry fluff balls were born in May at Cheyenne mountain zoo and they make up two percent of the wild population. They are vitally important genetically, and are doing extremely well. Today it was just announced that they are both males, i highly recommended checking out cmz YouTube for adorable videos.
Conservation efforts are continuing, both in their native habitat and throughout the world to boost genetic diversity and population numbers. So if you want to help the widely known rarest big cat on earth, maybe check out your local (aza accredited/participating in the species survival program) zoo.

Cattolotl (CR)
Axolotls (Ambystoma mexicanum) may be pretty popular pets and internet stars with their silly antics and strange appearance but unfortunately in the wild, they are now critically endangered. They remain at only three sites and their population is estimated to be between 50 to 1000 individuals. Their decline has been mainly attributed to the increasing urbanisation of Mexico City resulting in pollution and desiccation of their aquatic home. Previous collection for the international pet trade, local consumption, and the introduction of invasive carp and tilapia have also threatened the species.
Find out more on the IUCN RedList website.

For a conversation outside of Tumblr, I did some digging on the IUCN site and analyzed the status and trends of 540 shark species listed on the site. Here's what i found:
Of 540 species, 40% lie within near-threatened, threatened, endangered, and critically endangered, collectively. 13.7% are data deficient. Leaving 46.3% as least concern. This does not include extinct species.
Statistically, yes, the majority for shark are LC,. But not by a huge margin. That’s excluding the potential status of the data deficient. Which is better than I expected, but still not good.
Of 540 species, 39.5% are decreasing, 27% are stable, 2% are increasing, and 31.5% are unknown; Rounded to the nearest tenth. That right there is chilling. 2% of least-concern species are decreasing in population. So, it seems that the sharks that are coping with the anthropogenic extinction event are coping very well. Others are less fortunate.
A more comprehensive analysis would determine how many of these species are specialists or generalists vs. their status and trend, but that would take all week

Highlight the importance of sustainable hunting for endangered wild species.
Thanks to community-based wildlife management and trophy hunting of markhor some populations have recovered, which is reflected in the current IUCN Red List. It’s a success story that highlights the importance of sustainable hunting for endangered wild species.

New ecosystems, unprecedented climates: more Australian species than ever are struggling to survive
Australia is home to about one in 12 of the world’s species of animals, birds, plants and insects – between 600,000 and 700,000 species. More than 80% of Australian plants and mammals and just under 50% of our birds are found nowhere else. But habitat destruction, climate change, and invasive species are wreaking havoc on Earth’s rich biodiversity, and Australia is no exception. In 2023, the…

Critter Corner
Species: Purple Frog (Nasikabatrachus sahyadrensis)
Status: Near Threatened
Range: South western tip of India
Population Trend: Considered common, but difficult to find due to fossorial behavior. The population is considered to be in ongoing decline.
Habitat and Ecology: Found in forests, both disturbed and undisturbed, which is continuous with montane evergreen forests. Do have difficulty surviving in completely cleared habitats. Fossorial for most of the year but are “explosive breeders,” which lay their eggs in seasonal streams. Tadpoles then disperse via the flowing stream.
Threats: Habitat loss from human disturbance is the cause of ongoing threats. These disturbances include plantations and tree harvesting, dam construction, granite quarrying and resultant landslides, and road mortalities among other things. Climate change may be a potential future threat, given tadpoles’ hatching window. As with many frog species, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), a fungus causing the infection Chytridiomycosis, may prove an additional threat.
Conservation Action: Not legally protected but occurring within many protected areas within their range. Long-term monitoring and surveys are needed to continue population and threat assessments.
Citation: IUCN SSC Amphibian Specialist Group. 2022. Nasikabatrachus sahyadrensis. The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species 2022: e.T58051A166098621.

Similarly, if homosexuality actually resulted in a significant decrease in population growth, one might expect it to be disproportionately represented among animals that are suffering a severe decline in numbers, i.e., in endangered species. However, of the 2,203 mammals and birds in the world that are currently classified as threatened (either critically endangered, endangered, or vulnerable), homosexuality has been documented in just over 2 percent of these.¹⁷
17. Tallies and designations of threatened species are based on the official roster of the World Conservation Union. The three categories (critically endangered, endangered, and vulnerable) represent points along a continuum, based on a set of five quantitative criteria that encompass the species' rate of population decline, restricted geographic distribution, extent of population fluctuation, age distribution, effects of human disturbances (pollutants, introduced species, exploitation), and so on. See Baillie, J., and B. Groombridge, eds. (1996) 1996 IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals (Gland, Switzerland, and Cambridge, UK: IUCN-World Conservation Union).

How to replace the LED light bulb in the microwave 💡🪛 @DenisKorza #howto #microwave #led In this video I demonstrate the process of replacing the stock microwave bulb with a better specification, and make a comparison of the result. 📍 To successfully complete the process you will need: a microwave socket for E14 bulb, a heat resistant LED bulb with E14 socket, a screwdriver, a knife and some enthusiasm. 📌 Step by step instructions: 1️⃣ Unplug the microwave from the power supply. 2️⃣ Remove all the screws holding the casing and remove the casing. 3️⃣ Wet clean the enclosure shell and the enclosure planes underneath the shell. 4️⃣ Disconnect the power plug from the lamp socket and dismantle the socket with the lamp installed. 5️⃣ Install the new socket with LED lamp and connect the power plug. 6️⃣ Install the shell and all the screws that hold it in place. ✅ Success! Enjoy more efficient lighting with less power consumption.
Co s tím můžeme my (amatéři) dělat?
starat se o potoky a studánky, budovat tůně
evidovat a hlásit výskyty
kontrolovat potenciální nové lokality
informovat sebe a ostatní
[...]
(Zdroj obrázku (larvy mloka) a spousty článků: Obojživelníci České republiky)
(Zdroj obrázku a článek Temná budoucnost mloka skvrnitého: Sedmá generace)
Mloka zbytečně neosahávejte, není to příjemné pro vás ani pro něj.
Doma to prosím nezkoušejte.
(Zdroj obrázku a článek Zajímavosti ze života mloka skvrnitého: Příroda do kapsy)
Několik slov na závěr: Namísto života celebrity sledujte život náhodného obojživelníka třeba u sebe na zahrádce. Taťka mi posílá fotky toho našeho. Tím vlastně celý tenhle článek začal...
