A member of the eerie Doppleganger species, Zongi is on of the evil Zaibach Empire's agents in the anime series Vision of Escaflowne. He drains his victims life force to take on their exact appearance, making him a perfect spy.

even with allen's whole avoidant dislike for his father, we spend extensive time with him in order to resolve those feelings, although allen still misses the point repeatedly until celena shakes him out of it. and allen has only kind things to say about his mother, and however deep his feelings are (lol) he does love her. it's not great that his mom hid her feelings/what she knew about leon from her kid(s) but, we at least know what they were.

we get to see how millerna acts with her father, their difficult-but-loving relationship. who else... well, hitomi talks about her relationship with her parents a tiny bit. we know merle is an orphan. we saw naria and eriya's parents were brutally killed. we get to see dryden's dad and hear dryden blithely complain about him. chid and mahad... since chid and mahad are a parallel/analogue for van/van's responsibility among his family and even in particular the image of his father/balgus, i also wonder how much marlene and mahad fulfil that too in that chilling, heartwrenching flashback on the battlefield.

for how important they are, for how potent an impact they make in the lives of their children, in the few flashbacks we have of van and folken's childhood... aside from van's birth, there is no other instance of their parents talking to them. happy moments among the family are shared between van and folken only. their father died when van was still really young, but neither van nor folken even describe their parents, beyond van's memories of varie's despair, and seeing her scold/express how dire it is that he hide himself. no warm memories. we know she appears to him in the valley, but aside from whatever assumptions we can make about what we don't see, we don't have any evidence that varie comforts van. what we mainly see is balgus, the only father figure van had after folken disappeared, forcing van to fight in spite of van desperately protesting. van does not want to fight. it is painful for him. it haunts him.

their parents are a strange, confusing, distant void in the brothers' lives. a void from which answers may only emerge long after they've passed.

instead of varie comforting van after folken's gone, a young van comforts her.

varie knowingly married a killer of dragons, of her kind. perhaps she thought their union would save gaea and it wouldn't fall to her children— or perhaps she knew that from the start, and allowed them to suffer "for the greater good."

i believe the brothers respect their parents to the degree they can, but i don't have any reason to believe they understand them. what love they feel must be rooted solely in responsibility, and must be shaky and unclear beyond that. the person who shared uncontestable moments of warmth and care with van was folken. and folken understands what must be done, understands what he and van were born to do... whether he came about that understanding through an empathetic, psychic link between him and his otherworldly mother, or he came about that understanding on his own (from van's reaction to fanelia's traditions, from the dragon, from his experiences in zaibach, from van in the present, from nariya and eriya, from hitomi, etc.) well... i guess past a certain point, that's up to the viewer.

so it's pretty sad that he dies without van there. at the very least. leaving van alone and disoriented just as his mother did— both times. honestly kind of a bitch move on the writer's part if this is about disrupting a cycle, which we know it is. OKAY OKAY I'LL SHUT UP ABOUT THIS NOW

Escaflowne X Pokemon Crossover Fanart!

I just watched The Vision of Escaflowne in full for the first time this year (in the past, I only caught bits and pieces back when On Demand was a thing), and I loved the characters in it so much that I had to give them some Pokemon!

Van and Folken - Since they are half Draconian, I think Dragon type Pokemon would suit them well, especially gentle-looking dragons like the Dragonite evolution line. Neither of the two brothers are grown up yet here, so I gave them Dratini and Dragonair.

Allen - Honestly, I just love that he has a pet owl, so I gave him more owls! Any excuse to draw more Hoothoots and Noctowls.

Merle, Naria, and Eriya - Three different kinds of Meowth for the three cat girls of the show! Side note: I like how different their ears are from the usual anime cat girl.

Dilandau - Giving him fire type dogs like Arcanine, its Hisuian variant, and Houndoom was an easy choice since he loves burning things and has a connection to dogs/dogmen.

Hitomi - I gave her two other Pokemon that can see glimpses of the future: Gothitelle and Xatu. Both of them have Pokedex entries suggesting that they sometimes experience distress from the visions they see, so Hitomi would be able to understand their pain in a way most others couldn't, and vice-versa.

Okay so, I just looked it up, and the video game "Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Quest for Balance" is actually a sort of pseudo-sequel to "The Ember Island Players", wherein an Earth Kingdom Playwright (named Zongying) interviews Pakku, Bumi, and Iroh in the Jasmine Dragon as part of her research.

Pakku recaps Book 1, Bumi Book 2, and Iroh Book 3.

I don't know if the game is any good, but that's certainly one way of explaining away inaccuracies!

- "Allen, you dog!" When he kissed Hitomi

- After Allen confessed his secret to Hitomi before going to war: "Great, he'll probably die in the battle. Van's brother too."

- When everyone is saying goodbye to Hitomi: "Aw the little prince is there too!"

- "They didn't even kiss!!!"

Oh, gosh. Fan Zerui passed out from exhaustion and rather than sleep on the bed Bai Zongyi chose to sleep on the floor next to him. He's so far gone now I love it.

Chen Yi manhandles Ai Di a lot. I should have realised this when he casually picked him up and slung him over his shoulder at the very start of the first episode.

Oh, no, are they going to ask Bai Zongyi to date the awful rich girl who tried to pay him to be her boyfriend so they can find the source of the drugs?

Okay she just accused him of assault so I guess not

This is hilarious because the principal knows he's not really a teacher, but she can't admit she let a gang member go undercover in her school so she's having to just go along with Fan Zueyi claiming to be Bai Zongy's cousin

I thought this was going to be one of those dramas where the secondary couple were more interesting than the leads. And I am 100% here for Ai Di and Chen Yi but I am also now very fond of these two idiots as well

I can see why at some point they're going to have a 4 year time skip back to where the first episode started. How old is Bai Zongyi meant to be? He's still in high school so 17?
