If you are afraid of trying new food at a restaurant you not familiar with,then a burger is always your safest option.I do encourage to try new dishes ,especially if you've been to a restaurant more than once.😛🙌🏽 #food #foodie #instafoodie #instagood #foodaholic #foodgasm #foodblogger #foodisim #chicken #burger #yum #diner #lovefood #fries #lovefoodtoomuch #upcoming #blog #zomatosa Photo cred:@tsholofelomohlala63 (at Doppio Zero Rosebank)

Cape Town’s Tastebud Fiesta
In Cape Town, we are spoilt to have a smorgasbord of restaurants offering different international flavours. We South Africans love our traditional spicy food - chakalaka, biryani, and Nando’s peri-peri sauce on EVERYTHING - so it makes sense that Mexican and Tex-Mex food is so popular. From Town to the Winelands, you’re able to get your fix at places unique in their own ways.
We’ve put together a list of 10 restaurants in Cape Town that guarantee a Mexican foodgasm.
El Burro, Newlands/Green Point/Tamboerskloof
What started as a single restaurant in Green Point has expanded to the Southern Suburbs and Tamboerskloof. Each restaurant is beautifully decorated and has unique Mexican dishes you won’t find on other menus - think Goat Salpicon Salad and Aubergine & Artichoke Tacos. The menu also boasts an extensive list of infused Margaritas, such as Chilli, Strawberry Thyme, and Apple & Cinnamon. The baby sister restaurant, El Burro Taqueria, keeps it simple with tacos and cocktails. What more could you ask for?
San Julian, Green Point
San Julian can be found tucked away in a side street near to Cape Quarter. The family-owned restaurant opened its doors for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, after the San Julian family moved to SA from Mexico. The popularity of the restaurant led to the family making South Africa their home. After 6 years, this hidden gem has become a must-try for anyone with a love for authentic Mexican cuisine.
The Fat Cactus, Gardens/Mowbray/Woodstock
The Fat Cactus was born in 1998 and this should speak for itself. Now present in three locations, the chain is a favourite for live sports streamings and their happy hour specials. If you’re feeling thirsty you’ll want to get yourself a Moggy Rita jug - a combo of your favourite margarita flavours - or for a Mexican-South African fusion try The Iceberg; a 500ml draught beer topped with frozen margarita. You can’t go wrong with the food either!
VIVA Mexican Kitchen & Bar, Durbanville/Claremont/Stellenbosch
You can’t help but feel at home when you’re greeted by vibrant decor and a menu to match. The food is very affordable and includes different flavour combinations in classic tex-mex dishes. For something different try their Pizzadillas - their tex-mex take on pizza. They say it best with their recommendation: “Use your hands, share a jug and, most importantly, please have loads of fun!”
Panchos, Observatory
Panchos is an institution in Cape Town and has been around since 1982! The restaurant is located on the busy Lower Main Road in Obs and has with a humble facade that you might walk straight past… but definitely don’t. The menu is well-priced and the atmosphere is lively. Book ahead as Panchos never has an empty table.
Remex Mexican Cantina, Parklands/Plattekloof
Remex have done a great job in kitting their cosy restaurants out with quirky decor. Expect to find sombreros, Mexican dolls, and a roll of toilet paper on each table for when the chilli makes your upper lip sweat. Locals recommend the Chimi Changas, and who are we to disagree? Don’t miss out on their different specials, Monday-Thursday: Chilli Popper Monday, Chicken Wing Tuesday, Ladies Night Wednesday, and (especially) Tequila Thursday!
Tuk Tuk Microbrewery, Franschhoek
As the name would suggest, this taste of Mexico is part of a microbrewery slap-bang in the centre of Franschhoek village. Tuk Tuk is affiliated with CBC and has experienced brewmaster Dewald Goosen ensuring the best micro-brews. Diners have the option of pairing Tuk Tuk or CBC beer with either a 4 or 8-course Mexican tasting menu. This unique fusion of South African and Mexican culture can’t be missed.
Del Mar, Camps Bay
Part of the award-winning Bukhara Group, you’ll find Del Mar located in prime position on the Camps Bay strip. In keeping with other restaurants on the strip, Del Mar is modern, upmarket, and has a view of the ocean. The menu is unique from other Mexican places in Cape Town. Following the tapas trend, the restaurants offers different Ceviches, Antojitos (“Little Cravings”), and other sharing dishes. If you’re looking for a Mexican inspired meal in a more formal setting then you’ve found your new local.
Cosecha Restaurant, Franschhoek
If you’re out in the Winelands and looking for something different to the contemporary (although, amazing!) restaurants at most farms, why not go for something Latin American? Cosecha is located on the beautiful Noble Hill wine farm . The Tillery family, who own the farm, are originally from the USA and bring with them some of their favourite flavours from home. You won’t just find grapes growing on the farm as most of the restaurant’s ingredients are homegrown too! For a memorable winelands lunch call ahead to book a Latin-inspired picnic basket to enjoy outdoors.
Mex It Up, V&A Waterfront
You’ll find Mex It Up in the V&A Food Market. This take-away stall is the answer to that mid-week Mexican craving. Their concise menu has all the Mexican favourites, and for the carb-conscious foodie you’ll want to try the generously-portioned Naked Burrito - zero carbs and all the flavour! Owner, Flor, moved to SA from Mexican several years ago and is passionate about her authentic mexican food. She knows her regulars and always greets you with a smile!
