When early design is better than final one

I honestly have no idea, why the crew scrapped these good designs of Zira, Nuka and other outlander lionesses. She looked unique and interesting. Not like a parody she became in final version.

Same thing with Nuka, who was her son since first time he ever was introduced as a character, but at the same time he was described just as an outsider lion, i.e. no relation to Scar (as soon as he was introduced, the script never mentions it). And Nuka also had cool early design, which is way better that the final.

Vitani originally had no relation to Kovu and had romantic feelings toward him. Although her final design is better, except shape of nose.

Outlanders in early sketches were way better — they didn't look like female Scar. They still looked like lionesses, just exhausted due to hunger. And they had personality in these early sketches.

Kovu was the only Scar's cub in all early scripts, what also is hinted in his design (especially shape of nose), but later the idea was scrapped in favor of king Regandi being Kovu's real dad.

It is astounding to me that early versions had more uniqueness, personality and fresh imagination, while the final version literally looked like fanfiction, where all new characters are just replicas of the original old characters, just with different color or whatever.

I fucks with the headcanon that Vitani is Scar’s daughter - For a lot of reasons (similar reasons as to why I see Zira as Scar’s mate, and Nuka as their son, even though I’m aware that there is on-screen evidence against that idea) but the one I love the most is that Simba’s parents —Mufasa and Sarabi— would be Vitani’s uncle and aunt and frankly, that’s a dynamic I rarely ever see in most fan works that portray her as Scar’s daughter.

Like, could you imagine Sarabi being a mental counselor to her adult niece, giving her life lessons, or maybe telling her truths about Scar himself that she and her brothers were sheltered from for years on end? I know a lot of people see Nala filling in for the mother figure after Zira is killed but Sarabi would also fits that spot (hate hate hate how the writers of Simba’s Pride excluded her from the script on the basis of “she had nothing to do” bitch be so fucken fr)

Or let’s say Mufasa, since if we acknowledge The Lion Guard’s canon, Vitani has the Roar of the Elders (which would ironically be a position that her father had which she’d be gaining, again, why I’m very attached to the idea), she could talk to the Lions of the Past, including Mufasa, and once again, she could learn truths about Scar that Zira had kept from him. It’s never even established whether or not the Outsiders even know that Scar offed his brother, which opens up another can of worms, like, what was he like before the tragedy, how much of Zira’s story of Scar was actually true? What was the truth behind him losing the Roar? Also, Uncle Mufasa; just saying that phrase is a serotonin boost. But if he could offer wisdom to his grieving son, his maturing grandson, and help manufacture a loving relationship between his granddaughter and his brother’s hand-picked successor, I see no reason why he wouldn’t be there for his estranged niece’s re-integration into her family.

This is all headcanon material/speculation, but in a scenario where Vitani is related to Scar, I would see a good element of her post-TLK/TLG story being a positive inverse of Simba’s — Simba’s uncle being the cause of his trauma, and Vitani’s uncle and aunt helping her overcome it.

VG: Possession

Something I realized Vitani and Kiara currently have in common: Being possessed by a deceased Outsider.

I noticed when Vitani's possessed by Nuka, her eyes go from blue to red. When Kiara's possessed by Zira, her eyes go from red to blue. Thought I'd play with those visuals by drawing wherever my stylus took me.

Whether or not this interaction is "canon" to the story (be a spoiler if I say a straight answer), it was still a fun visual for this month. More spooky Vitani's Guard stuff is in store later this month 👀

Zira's early design

Yep, originally Zira was named Bianca, she was Kovu's aunt, not mother (dead already), and she had the hyenas as her allies and army. Here's Bianca's model sheet. And I like this design much more than Zira's final design. Bianca's design fits to TLK universe, but still is pretty unique.

While Zira's final design is a pure disaster (the same thing I can say about her cubs' design). Just female version of Scar. Or as if she was Scar's either sister or daughter. Absolutely bland and mediocre.
