Chapter 1 of Duskmourn story posted today. Highlights and spoilers under the break.

- Having a description of suburbia in Magic feels so strange. Especially with the family feeling like they pulled the Deetzes straight from Beetlejuice.

- Kaito and Emperor with bonus Yoshimaru. Is this the good boy's official magic story debut?

- Duskmourn is very interesting in concept. A parasitic plane that sends out its feelers to abduct people into the house through doors that shouldn't be there. Wonder if this is only a recent result of the Phyrexian invasion or if it's been going on since the house took over Duskmourn. Also makes me wonder if Duskmourn is a transient plane like Shandalar, moving through the multiverse.

- Tyvar, my beloved. First himbo in our hearts.

- Niko being desparked sucks to hear but also seems kind of inevitable. I don't know how they polled with the audience during first Kaldheim, but I always liked them.

- "why is that man not wearing a shirt?"

- I hadn't considered before the story dropped how much Niko and Aminatou might be at odds due to their very core character differences. Surprising that Niko has heard of Aminatou though. I always imagined Aminatou as more obscure even in the world of plainswalkers.

- Aminatou has checkpoint powers. Weird use of bending fate, but okay.

- Proft present, barely.

Okay but hear me out. Everyone on reddit was saying that Zimone's "death" here was really tame in comparison to everyone elses. Which yeah, I get it because this could be taken metaphorically, but like:

Was I the only one who took the phrasing of "breaking from inside as it blossomed into a new, smaller version of the creature" literally when I read it? Like WAS I THE ONLY ONE WHO THOUGHT OF "The Quarry" or "Alien" when Zimone "died" here? (like this but from human to monster:)

Reminder: The other four are Planeswalkers, whether in the past or currently. They are all very experienced adults. Zimone is 16 at the youngest as she stated herself she was older than Marina. But she's definitely not over 18 either. She is a student. A child. The fact that she can just have this happen to her and carry on instantly is SO BADASS OF HER.

I'll admit that Tyvar is someone I am less familiar with in the story but this fully cements him in my mind as a himbo.

I see a whole bunch of posts about Tyvar going to Strixhaven, and I'm just gonna point out here that there is a personality trait in the DnD book that makes him an excellent Quandrix student:

Now that we know Zimone Wola is working as an exchange student with the Izzet League on Ravnica for her Strixhaven graduate thesis (i.e., theoretical extraplanar spaces), which implies a master’s-level degree, can you say if Strixhaven also offers doctorates? Second, is it safe to assume that these types of exchanges are now occurring between other institutions of higher magical learning on other planes, separate from Ravnica and Arcavios?

1 - I can't confirm doctorates, but Doc Aurlock is a bearfolk and the only other known ones are from Arcavios.

2 - Planes are starting to intermingle in fun ways. I can't 'speculate' on this for you beyond that, but this is an instance of that.

Catching up on Duskmourn story since life got in the way.

I totally called Tyvar using his magic to become the House was a bad thing. Good thing Zimone was there or else I'd have to change my blog name to riptyvarkell.
