Lighter & Princess

Mi sono mangiata letteralmente le mani.

Oh...se avessi ascoltato @lisia81 che mi consigliava di vedermi questa serie l'anno scorso, mi sarei evitata l'imbarazzo di cosa dover scrivere nel quiz di fine anno alla domanda "miglior storia d'amore", "miglior bacio" o anche "miglior drama". ma sono quasi convinta che avrei potuto infilare questa serie anche in altre categorie.

Esattamente come per Moving, trovare un difetto in Lighter and Princess (L&P per brevità) è tosta: regia, montaggio, sceneggiatura, ambientazione, dialoghi, ritmo della narrazione, recitazione... ho trovato tutto fantastico.

Partiamo dalla storia: la trama è semplice e non è niente di trascendentale o epico.

Li Xun è un freddo e calcolatore asso della programmazione informatica che è entrato al college come primo agli esami di ammissione all'università nazionale, guadagnandosi l'ammirazione di tutti i suoi compagni di classe. Tuttavia, non è interessato a partecipare alle normali attività universitarie con i suoi compagni e ha i suoi progetti per il futuro. Questa mentalità lo porta in conflitto con molti dei suoi compagni di gruppo poiché spesso rifiuta di collaborare con loro. #asociale Zhu Yun, nel frattempo, è una giovane donna amichevole e innocente che ha appena iniziato la sua vita universitaria dopo aver fatto tutto ciò che i suoi genitori e la società si aspettavano da lei. Quando incontra Li Xun, si sente in conflitto. Si preoccupa che lui sia un possibile piantagrane, ma si sente comunque in qualche modo attratta da lui. Anche se all'inizio sembrano scontrarsi, iniziano ad apprezzare il tempo trascorso insieme. Ma quando un incidente cambia le loro vite e minaccia di separarli – proprio mentre la storia d’amore stava iniziando ad evolversi – la loro relazione è alla prova finale! [mydramalist]

Come si evince la trama non è nulla di rivoluzionario o lontanamente leggendario. Sono ragazzi dell'università che affrontano i drammi di tutti i giorni mentre crescono piano piano ed imparano sempre di più dalla vita.

Dal punto di vista narrativo ho adorato come L&P avesse un impostazione alla The Untamed, ossia farci vedere una situazione del presente per poi tornare indietro nel tempo e mostrarci come si sia arrivati a quella circostanza. E' una modalità molto furba perché mette lo spettatore in condizioni di sapere già che andrà "tutto a skifio" più va avanti la storia ambientata nel passato...di soffrire più la storia prosegue. E allo stesso tempo da speranza allo spettatore che si torni presto nel presente cosicché l'agonia finisca.

Andando invece alle tematiche del drama esse sono tante e raccontate magnificamente. Come detto sopra la serie è una storia di crescita. I personaggi di L&P ci vengono presentati sin dall'inizio con le loro personalità, convinzioni e desideri per il futuro. Mano a mano che la storia avanza, ognuno di loro dovrà fare i conti con le difficoltà della vita di tutti i giorni, amicizie, decisioni per il futuro... ci saranno scontri, riappacificazioni e tanti sbagli, errori. Come è la vita.

Si perdono amici e se ne trovano altri, si cerca di capire "cosa vogliamo diventare da grandi" e ci sta stretto che qualcuno decida per noi. E quello che pensavamo di volere nel nostro futuro, risulta non del tutto veritiero. Tutti i personaggi di L&P crescono ed imparano dai loro errori: per fare un esempio superficiale, Zhu Yun che sul finire della serie si schiera dalla parte di Li Xun andando contro alla madre e decidendo lei stessa per il suo futuro e con chi vuole passarlo.

A fare da paio al concetto di crescita, c'è quello dell'essere "il migliore" che riguarda prettamente Gao e Li Xun. Per il marito di Lina essere il migliore vuol dire sconfiggere Li Xun. Che sia al computer o a chi piscia più lontano, l'importante è vincere contro il lead. Un ossessione così forte che lo porta a preferire la morte - letteralmente - piuttosto che lasciar prevalere Li Xun. Anche il lead relega l'essere il migliore alla vittoria su Gao - anche per motivi personali - mostrando all 'ex migliore amico che non riuscirà mai a batterlo, guidato dall'odio e dal risentimento.

Alla fine però entrambi capiscono che il miglioramento non è in relazione verso gli altri, nella competizione. Ma verso se stessi. L'essere una persona migliore rispetto al passato, perdonando vecchi rancori ed imparando ad andare avanti amando le cose e le persone che gli stanno più vicine. Capendo dove si è sbagliato, cercando di fare ammenda e comprendendo che ci sarà sempre qualcuno migliore di te in qualcosa.

Ma se ho adorato come la serie mostri e sviluppi questi due concetti, la cosa che ho amato ancora di più è stata la scrittura dei personaggi: umani, sfaccettati, fallaci. Pieni di insicurezze, rabbia, egoismo, arroganza ed inclini all'emotività.

Zhu Yun, interpretata da una fantastica Zhang Jing Yi, è uno di quei personaggi protagonisti femminili che io adoro. Perché è tosta e determinata senza essere badass o violenta. E' intelligente e coraggiosa, a tratti delicata ed elegante. Non fa scenate, non urla. Lei silenziosamente fa la sue cose ed una volta che ha preso una decisione è molto risoluta nel perseguirla. sposarsi il lead come missione di vita

Ma allo stesso tempo è insicura, cerca continuamente conferme e si lascia prendere dalle emozioni. Ad esempio nella sua relazione con Li Xun e Lina. Non c'è storia: ogni volta che il lead passa dieci secondi con questa ragazza, Zhu Yun va in paranoia totale. Sia nel passato che nel presente della storia. Come dice giustamente @lisia81 sarà poi questa insicurezza a non permettergli di "vedere" il piano di Li Xun nel passato e di stargli davvero vicino nel momento di bisogno. Ed anche se fa male, adoro questa imperfezione della lead che la rende molto umana.

Interessantissima poi la sua relazione con la madre. Io mi lamentavo di quell'altra mamma famosa dei drama cinesi - non dirò il nome perché solo nominarla mi fa salire il crimine e perché @lisia81 deve ancora vederlo e non voglio spoilierargli nulla- ma a ben pensarci, la madre di Zhu Yun è peggio. Almeno quella era malata e depressa e cercava di ammazzarsi a giorni alterni. RIP

Questa invece, ha instaurato con Zhu Yun un rapporto ossessivo e controllante. Lei sa cosa è meglio per sua figlia. Lei decide cosa deve studiare, fare, andare e "provare per il lead". E se da una parte posso comprendere il fatto che voglia le cose migliori per la figlia - tutti i genitori vogliono le cose più belle per i figli - dall'altra inorridisco quando impedisce a Zhu Yun di fare la sua vita, le sue scelte.

Senza parlare poi di come tratta quel povero lead. Nel finale quando gli dice che il marito di sua figlia deve avere una buona famiglia ecc ecc... sapendo benissimo che Li Xun una famiglia non ce l'ha, non è stata cattiva. E' stata meschina. Crudele.

Ma è stata utile. Perché "grazie a lei" Zhu Yun prende in mano la sua vita ed il suo futuro, dimostrando che non gli importa di cosa pensi o provi sua madre e concludendo così il suo percorso di crescita.

Poi c'è Li Xun che ha il volto di Chen Fei Yu e a cui devo letteralmente inchinarmi. Perché l'avevo già visto in Ever Night e non mi era piaciuto. Avevo trovato la sua recitazione rigida e non mi sembrava che fosse entrato nel personaggio.

Ma in L&P fa il salto di qualità: lui è Li Xun. La naturalezza con cui porta in scena il bel tenebroso mezzo tsundere è encomiabile, così come l'espressività. Li Xun è un uomo di poche parole - una è poca e due sono troppe XD - e spesso mostra i suoi pensieri tramite espressioni: l'alzamento del ciglio, il sorrisetto, il socchiudere gli occhi. Li Xun non parla ma grazie all'ottimo lavoro di Chen Fei Yu tu spettatore puoi supporre cosa sta provando e pensando.

La poca loquacità non è ovviamente un caso: il giovine ha avuto una vita di merda - e soffre di preoccupante artrosi a trent'anni XD @ili91-efp - così come è perfettamente normale che non gli importi nulla degli altri e persegue i suoi piani a prescindere da tutto e tutti. All'inizio di questa storia Li Xun è un blocco di ghiaccio che risponde male a tutti e se ne frega di qualsiasi cosa. Vive per se stesso ed è unicamente interessato a raggiungere i suoi obiettivi. Il resto è nulla.

Poi arriva Zhu Yun. Il suo amore per lei, la loro relazione, gli permette di sciogliersi diventando piano piano più aperto e disponibile tanto che anche la sorella nota il suo cambiamento. Zhu Yun d'altronde è l'unica persona al mondo disposta a combattere al suo fianco, che si fida ciecamente di lui, che si preoccupa per lui...

Ma ahimè tutti i progressi s'infrangono alla morte della sorella e relativa prigione. Li Xun cade nel vortice della vendetta, mandando a puttane la sua relazione con Zhu Yun ed il suo futuro.

Ci sarà modo di parlare della relazione tra i due. Quello che mi preme è mettere in risalto come il protagonista di questa storia non sia minimamente perfetto e che va benissimo così.

Li Xun, anche per via del suo vissuto, può essere cattivo e spietato. Ha ignorato le richieste e le preghiere di Gao per più di metà serie. Ha lasciato la sua ragazza facendo espressamente leva sulle sue insicurezze e paure e facendole volontariamente del male. Li Xun è un genio che può creare piani diabolici senza preoccuparsi di chi ha intorno e come essi reagiranno alla cosa. Una volta che si pone un obiettivo va avanti come uno schiaccia sassi.

Ma allo stesso tempo è capace di grandi gesti d'amore, di gentilezza e rispetto. Intelligentissimo, è sempre un passo avanti a tutti ed è un piacere vederlo spiegare i suoi piani o ammirarlo mentre lavora al pc.

Quando esce di galera pare tornato ai vecchi tempi dell'università. Chiuso, introverso, a tratti scortese. E di nuovo impelagato con vecchi rancori. E' straziante vederlo guardare la lead con gli occhi a cuore e sapere che fosse per lei sareste già sposati con 10 figli non pensa di meritarla e che secondo lui non torneranno più assieme.

Nel finale poi, fa il salto di qualità riuscendo a lasciarsi alle spalle l'odio e la vendetta per vivere felicemente la sua vita. Riconosce i suoi errori con Zhu Yun, accetta che i genitori della ragazza difficilmente daranno la loro benedizione alla coppia ce ne faremo una ragione e comprende finalmente che la sua ex fidanzata è ancora la donna che ama e che vorrà sempre.

Il personaggio di Li Xun è quello con cui ho avuto più difficoltà ad interpretare i pensieri: avendo il POV bloccato e dovendomi spesso basare sulle espressioni o su poche parole, ho dovuto qualche volta decodificarlo.

Infatti la mia scena preferita è quella dove Li Xun, geloso del pittore, sbrocca malamente con Zhu Yun. In quella scena il lead non riesce a trattenere la gelosia che diviene rabbia quando la ragazza sembra sminuire la loro passata relazione " chi non è mai stato innamorato a 18 anni?" - una cosa cosi. Adoro questo momento perché Li Xun pare un fiume a cui hanno rotto gli argini e dove si mostra la vulnerabilità ed il dolore di questo personaggio.

Ed infine c'è Gao. A livello di scrittura credo che sia il migliore tra tutti i personaggi. Dovrebbe essere il villain di questa serie ma la narrazione fa in modo che non lo sia fino in fondo.

Gao che voleva battere il lead e dimostrarsi il migliore. Gao che era sempre primo al liceo e non poteva accettare che qualcun altro, senza troppi sforzi, lo superasse. Gao innamoratissimo di Lina anche se lei amava il lead. Gao che consapevole dei propri limiti e desideroso di allontanarsi dall'ingombrante bravura di Li Xun, fa un passo indietro per andarsene all'estero...

Gao, come tutti i personaggi di questa storia, compie azioni non sempre condivisibili ma che sono comprensibili. Tu come spettatore capisci da dove proviene l'odio e la disperata voglia di sconfiggere Li Xun che Gao mostra così sfacciatamente.

Nella prima parte della serie, Gao è un bravo ragazzo. Studia, si impegna ma non riesce a superare Li Xun. Nonostante lavorino assieme c'è un baratro tra loro, spesso perché Li Xun attua scelte che riguardano il lavoro di tutti senza tenere conto di chi ci ha lavorato oltre a lui. Non posso dare torto a Gao quando si arrabbia con il lead per questi motivi.

Finché Gao perde la specializzazione. Nonostante avesse pregato Li Xun di non fare casino per non creargli problemi, Li Xun lo ignora e Gao non raggiunge l'agognato risultato.

Qui c'è forse uno dei pochi appunti che posso fare alla serie, per quanto riguarda la trasformazione di questo personaggio in uno così crudele e che sorride nel vedere Li Xun essere arrestato dopo che gli è morta la sorella. Secondo me, questa trasformazione così lapidaria è stata un po' frettolosa per uno che fino a 3 episodi prima, era impensabile facesse una cosa così cattiva.

Comunque sia, poiché non riesce a sconfiggere il lead per vie normali, Gao usa quelle "traverse", sforando nell'illegalità. Ma finché può battere Li Xun, vale tutto.

Quando lo ritroviamo nel presente, Gao è il Presidente della L&P, copia i giochi degli altri ed è sposato niente popò di meno che con Lina, la donna che ha sempre amato ma che non lo ricambia.

L'uscita di galera del protagonista metterà sotto pressione Gao in tutti i modi possibili ben sapendo che Li Xun rivuole la L&P. E Gao piano piano cadrà nell'ossessione.

E se da una parte godo nel vederlo in difficoltà visto tutti i danni che ha fatto, dall'altra mi dispiace anche un po': alla fine ha raggiunto tutti i risultati che voleva...ma a che prezzo? E davvero questo, era quello che voleva?

Dal finale di serie s'intuisce di no. Una volta venuta fuori la malattia, l'ossessione si acuisce e diventa quasi follia: Gao si rifiuta di operarsi finché Li Xun non si arrende. Che è illogico. E' stupido. Ma è perfettamente comprensibile per il personaggio di Gao.

Ed il finale... da una parte temevo che la malattia di Gao fosse un motivo per darci il buonismo finale con tutti i personaggi che s'abbracciavano felici perché oh...Gao sta male e bisogna fare pace. Lighter and Princess invece, mi stupisce ancora non dando alla malattia il ruolo risolutore dei conflitti ma rendendola un modo per i due di riflettere sulle loro azioni e su cosa sia davvero importante.

Nota a margine sulla espressione felice ed un po' stupida di Gao quando Lina si presenta all'ospedale dicendogli che rimarrà con lui. Non l'ho mai visto così felice come in quella scena. Adorabile. Mi si è stretto il cuore per lui.

Ma se ho amato come siano stati scritti i personaggi, quello che mi ha davvero preso il cuore è stata la storia d'amore. Spesso i drama romantici scadono nello smielato e nei cliché: perdita di memoria, second lead che fanno gli stronzi, lei che inciampa e casualmente cade tra le braccia del fusto di turno...insomma le solite cose.

L&P non solo non presenta niente di tutto questo ma riesce ad essere adorabile e romantico con una coppia giocosa e divertente, amorevole e davvero piacevole da guardare. Sorridevo involontariamente ogni volta che Li Xun faceva il solletico a Zhu Yun, ad esempio!

I due lead infatti, hanno una chimica spaventosa ed ogni volta che si guardavano negli occhi pare veramente che non esistesse nient'altro che l'altro. Il modo in cui di guardano, toccano, si abbracciano, invadono lo spazio uno dell'altro, è così naturale che sembra che siano sposati da anni.

Inoltre, l'altro motivo per cui ho amato questa coppia è perché sono tutto tranne che perfetti. Sono imperfetti presi singolarmente e sono imperfetti come coppia. Nonostante si amino molto e si sostengano sempre, ognuno di loro porta nella relazione i proprio difetti: Zhu Yun diventando insicura e ansiosa e Li Xun volendo fare tutto da solo. Ricordo ad esempio che sia nel passato che nel futuro, Zhu Yun si lamentava di come il lead non la includesse nei suoi piani e la tenesse sempre all'oscuro di tutto. Gli chiedeva se era inclusa nei suoi piani, del loro futuro ecc ecc....

Questo succede anche nel presente con dei notevoli miglioramenti ma ancora siamo lontani dalla perfezione...e va benissimo così. E' perfetto così!

Le relazioni impeccabili non esistono. E non mi piacciono le storie dove i due protagonisti perfetti si giurano amore eterno e dove sono così bravi uno con l'altro che sai che l'unico motivo per cui si potrebbero lasciare sono per interventi esterni.

Sicuramente Li Xun e Zhu Yun sono una delle mie coppie preferite di quest'anno. Così come lo è questo drama.

Poi oh...ci sarebbe tantissimo altro da dire: dal second lead pittore che non è mai stato veramente un second ma anzi un buon amico. Da Lina che da brava egoista pensa solo ai fatti suoi salvo poi rinsavire nel finale, dai ragazzi della compagnia dei due lead, da Ren Di e la sua storia con il cantante del suo gruppo... ma per adesso basta così.

Consiglio comunque a tutti la visione di questa serie!

How I feel about this character

Shu Yi is such a fun character to me. He is so painfully honest and blunt. He tries to be aloof and cool but his face is like a 4K TV displaying every emotion he has as he feels them. He is driven by emotional impulses, he for sure never truly thinks about things before he does them. When he's mad he lashes out and when he's sad he cries. He definitely thinks about things more in retrospect. It's part of the reason why Shi De was able to manipulate his way into his life. I do love that Shu Yi says what he's thinking and he doesn't stifle himself and that makes him reliable and trustworthy to me. I appreciate that he calls people out on their BS no matter who they are, people like to treat him like he's stupid or a child and I'm glad he doesn't allow it. I love him.

Only Gao Shi De...and sometimes not even Shi De.

My non-romantic OTP for this character

I loved Shu Yi's friendship with Zhe Yu. I love that Zhe Yu encouraged all of Shu Yi's wrongdoings. I love that he was so ready to fight his former crush Shi De for trying to weasel his way back into Shu Yi's life without explaining himself. They just give off the energy of petty popular girls when they're together.

My unpopular opinion about this character

Personally...I think Shu Yi forgave his father and Shi De too fucking fast. Shi De let that man talk him into GHOSTING Shu Yi for FIVE YEARS and it took almost no fucking effort on his part. Shu Yi was right that Shi De didn't believe in his love for him and Shu Yi's father had NO business interfering. And he gave such an ass-backwards reason behind it. Shi De is exactly where Otou-san was once upon a time and it's not like Shi De was a bad guy he was smart and talented and destined for great things. I think Shu Yi should've let Shi De grovel a lot longer and highkey he should've told his dad to kick rocks until he was ready to accept Shi De. As much as I love Shu Yi's reconciliation with Shi De, sometimes I feel like Shi De didn't deserve it at that time. But Shu Yi was ready to forgive him long before he did.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

Wish we had gotten a wedding and I really did want to see Shu Yi SOAR with his new company.

Unconscious after a car accident, university student Chun Yu and her best friend Qing You mysteriously find themselves inside the dangerous world of a VR game. Several other people have also unwittingly ended up here, and they soon discover they were all involved in the accident - except for substitute teacher Gao Xuan, who claims to have simply fallen asleep. Seeing no other option than to play the game, they eventually beat the level and wake up … only to immediately return the next night.

Faced with deadly monsters, puzzles, and mind games, the players have to learn to cooperate despite being unsure if they can trust each other. The pressure increases when it turns out that people who die in the game fall into a coma in real life. And then several more students are dragged into the game! The group spends their nights trying to survive the next level and their days investigating who is doing this to them and why. As they grow closer, friendships and budding romances are repeatedly put to the test by the stress of the situation and the evil machinations of the people behind the game…

Actually Interesting

This drama was all over my Douyin FYP when it was showing. Imagine seeing people in modern-day clothes, in a slightly olden-day setting running from what seemed like zombies. Tell me that wouldn't pique your interest. Okay, maybe it wouldn't but it piqued mine. However, apart from that snippet, I went into this drama not knowing anything. Hell, I didn't even know who were the actors.

Anyhow. The premise of 19th Floor is not a new concept. It's the classic 'real life people entering a game with high stakes' plot. What was new was that them entering the game was not obvious initially. The how they entered was a mystery until quite a few episodes in too. Additionally, the games were different. Each time they entered it, the game, the rules and even the stakes were different.

Initially, this was an extremely fascinating drama. I was hooked and went through episodes like I had no other responsibilities. However, as the cast went on and began discovering the secrets and motives, the drama honestly, got predictable. In my opinion, 19th Floor could have had a darker tone to it. Keep the storyline but make things darker, bring in the 'unreliable narrator' trope, make the high stakes actually high stakes as in, more deaths or consequences that cannot be undone. You see, the beginning of this drama was action-filled but the end, not so much.

Things are getting licensed fast enough that keeping a list like this up-to-date is basically impossible, but I saw someone asking in the tags so I figured I'd try. All titles are danmei unless otherwise noted (very little baihe is licensed so far). I've included Chinese titles, but sometimes publishers change the original titles so much that I can't track them down, apologies. I've hit the link limit on this post so I've had to remove NovelUpdate links, but they're still in the version of this post on Wordpress. Note that Taiwanese titles are not included on this list.

This is everything I know of as of December 11, 2024. There might be more. I tried. Resources used to compile this list: Danmeinews.com; this Carrd, last updated in March 2023; this other carrd last updated October 23 2024; list of danmei with official licenses on NovelUpdates; a similar list on Goodreads; danmei-specific list on Reddit that to my eye looks accurate for the larger publishers but isn't thorough for some of the smaller ones.

Seven Seas:

These titles are in various stages of publication, from "entire series released" to "license literally announced less than a week ago." As far as I know, all Seven Seas titles are available world-wide, through major distributors and libraries, and in e-book and print formats. Seven Seas translation quality varies but the editing is general strong and the editions are sturdy and nice. Note that Seven Seas isn't without controversy, especially for treating their contractors poorly resulting in them unionizing. Some people have also been unhappy with the fidelity of their translations compared to the original Chinese (I've been satisfied personally but ymmv).

Rosmei licenses are Singapore distribution rights only. There is a list of international partners organizing group orders here. I've personally placed my orders through Yiggybean, as discussed in reply to this ask. Most of these titles are only being released as print editions, tho titles that weren't originally on JJWXC (of which there are several here) WILL have e-book editions. My first book from Rosmei arrived, and I found the translation and editing to be very strong. I can't speak to how accurate it may be to the Chinese original, but it read smoothly and had very few errors. Overall, though they've made some mistakes, they've been communicative and responsive.

Via Lactea titles are primarily for sale through their website and through some distributors, such as Amazon.com. All titles are either print-only or e-book + print. Only a handful have actually been released, the rest are licensed and presumably in progress. I've now read three titles published by Via Lactea and while the translations are decent I could wish the editing was more consistent. Everything reads as if it would have been improved by one more thorough proof read.
