Word for today: zetetic
Approaching a subject by questioning, expecting evidence or answers before accepting a proposition, such as a skeptic investigating a story.
Tip for example sentence writers: I know it’s a term only used in advanced discourse but can y’all please provide quotations with more context than “here’s what Immanuel Kant calls it”

zetetic- how curious are they? has it led to anything particularly great or horrible happening to them?
primordial- what event in their backstory was the most formative to them today?
For Lenora, of course, it's Lucien's death. Almost everything she's done since has been in some way motivated by her grief and her need to know why it happened. This will continue to be true even after she gets him back; the person she knew is still mostly gone, so it's going to keep affecting her forever.
Selina's was simply taking the initiative to move to the Neath. She had grown up as her family's muse, their doll, and even her short-lived musical career on the Surface couldn't have started without their influence (and that of their patrons). Leaving gave her the opportunity to become her own person, for better or for worse.
I've touched on this one before, but the first permanent death of a crewmate hit Emory hard. I mean, he would have grown up around a lot of these people, and loss is such a weird thing in the Neath (especially for someone born there) that it just doesn't quite have the same impact until it's forever. To add to it, this happened during a brief period where he was technically in command; it made him wonder if he was putting too much faith in himself purely because he'd been raised by other skilled zailors. It's part of what led them to ultimately decide that they weren't going to remain on their family's ship or become a corsair captain in their own right. Don't get him wrong, he doesn't want a boring life, just one where he isn't under constant threat from his own infamy and any danger he and his crew get into is mostly on their own terms.

desuetude and zetetic?
What relics of theor past they'll still hold onto in the 7th City?
A daguerreotype of them and Hiram and Giorgione at a party. They're laughing (two of them at least). A golden locket necklace with a remarkable charcoal portrait of a young lady, the name "Eleonor" inscribed on the back. A concerto for violin and piano, composed in secret with a deviless and unbeknownst to the one of their truly loved ones. A scrimshaw whale made of the bones of a forgotten zee beast. It reeks of melancholy and it will bring nightmares of loneliness at the bottom of the Unterzee.
Are they curious? Has this led them to something great/horrible happening to them?
They are VERY curious. This led them to the land of the Mountain, gathering the Seven and wage war to the Presbyterate.
They discovered about a Garden and couldn't help but to see to know to burn. And the lingering light to this day burns them still.
"Come to me" said Stone "for I've waited for you for so long. I love you so much you'll never suffer again"
And they don't. They do not feel any kind of pain, physical , spiritual or emotional. They desperately cling to the last pain lodged deep within their heart, the loss of their beloved Eleonor, sun kissed, golden hair, so long ago. Drown the Light and yet it burns burns BURNS.
Burned and blinded by the light, crying violant tears they heard of a place deep beneath the Zee where there's dark and quiet and peace. They went and met a strange woman.
"Would you like to hear a story, dear?" She said.
"Of course I want to, Ma'am." Replied Morgan.
And so they learnt about the Gant Pole and the death of Zee Beasts and the duties of the old woman.
And there in the dark she fed herself to young Morgan and so they sworn her same oath and bound themselves to the Hunger of the Zee: seek the behemoths tired of living and put an end to their travesties and free the spirit from their flesh and meat and consume them, for as long as the Oath will be passed on.
Which will never be done. No one should be burdened by such a duty ever again.

I read something that claimed there was no Greek muse for prose and that was a major driver of their argument and that just... isn't true? It's Clio. She has a name. She's one of the main muses. Why would you choose to be wrong about this? There's nine of them, you could have checked. The Greeks wrote things in prose, and considered it an important literary form. Perhaps you've read this Demosthenes fellow. Or heard of him. He's not just a pseudonym in Ender's Game. Or maybe Herodotus? He wrote a muse-inspired prose "inquiry" that inquired so hard the Greeks stopped using that word for inquiry and started it to refer to what he inquired into. They use "zetetic" now where they used to use "historic". Worse, other people gave the inquiry books of Herodotus titles after the muses. The first one is Clio. Why do you suck so hard that you don't know this if you're going to publish a book of Greek poetry?

Zetetic and subterfuge for your choice(s) of oc
zetetic- how curious are they? has it led to anything particularly great or horrible happening to them?
Xerxen is very curious where art is concerned! it’s what got him above-ground (or at least out of flute street) in the first place, and involved in the anti-monarchist movement. he wanted to know more about the strange place that a lot of his friends went to, even though they didn’t seem to like it much. and yeah, he’s run into a lot of trouble in London, but most days he would say it’s worth it. he’s very intrigued by the politics of art, and he’s become a prolific painter and composer since coming to London.
subterfuge- would they make a good spy? why or why not?
actually yes, I think Vela would be a good spy. as much as ze is silly and dramatic and weird in zir everyday life, ze is also a good actor, and a really good liar. plus, without the weirdness, ze is almost unrecognizable. if you see zir in bright colors every day, and then someone in plain clothes comes in using a different name, you might not make the connection that it’s the same person.
also ze just got zir full cabinet noir, so that’s very exciting.

zetetic for your ocs!
zetetic - how curious are they? has it led to anything particularly great or horrible happening to them?
Nora is very curious, and while this does lead her to breakthroughs on cases or other research, she has definitely gone mad or been killed in her search for knowledge before. That being said, she does have some self-preservation skills (except when it comes to her Ambition). I think the part of her life where it's been a blessing and a curse the most is actually in relationships. She wants to know more about people she's interested in, and sometimes she manages to frame this in a flattering way but sometimes it just comes off as unwelcome prying. It definitely put Emory on guard until he realized she wasn't going to use her knowledge of his background against him.
Selina will drop almost anything once it stops entertaining her, unless it's for the sake of someone she cares about, but when she is interested in something…it's very much “curiosity killed the cat,” and even the dying doesn't usually stop her. It did technically lead her to a better life, though! If she hadn't come to the Neath out of curiosity, she would have had a lot of trouble fitting into “normal” society on the Surface. Wanting to learn everything she can about Parabola is eventually going to be beneficial to her both career and Ambition-wise, too.
Emory honestly prefers to keep out of a lot of things. They do enjoy learning, but generally it's something they do for a specific purpose rather than for its own sake, so they're only curious about particular subjects. He'll spend time tracking down or making updated maps to help with his work, for example, or learn something about a person's interests to further a relationship. When they get badly hurt, it's usually because they were seeking a thrill of some sort, not knowledge.

Flattening the Earth 2: Fly Leaf
Made from images in The Earth is not a Globe! by Samuel Rowbothan and The Sea-Earth Globe and its Monstrous Hypothetical Motions by Albert Smith/Zetetes.
Both are pretty terrible reads.

Also adding in part to last post and possibly getting too vulnerable, while rereading Fateless I think I finally figured out the reason I struggle with writing certain ships over others is cause subconsciously I'm comparing them to other massive fics of those ships that I've read and adored and reread. Like the biggy I struggle with heaps is Shirou/Saber and there's amazing fics like Fateless or Fatumonagatari or Fate/Zetetic Dream, then with Luke/Mara it's the same thing again. Same with AsuShin too and it was something I struggled with and still sometimes struggle with in IchiRuki and my Spider-Man fics.
So I think that's something I need to work on is getting past that subconscious barrier in my writing and compare myself to other people less. And you may ask why Im telling Tumble about this? Well I dunno I can't keep everything locked up in my head. And last time I wrote out something big was my outline of Love Tangles on twitter and that got me to finally write that out. And I guess my creative writing professor says journaling helps with stuff so this is my version of that.
