I’m finishing Zeta today and I just have to say it’s a little funny that everyone wants Kamille dead. Like that’s just a guy.
People did that to Amuro to a much lesser extent, and a lot of his strongest enemies barely knew who he was, even at the end.
But no Kamille is just personally the main enemy of everyone who’s not with him

Even if it’s not entirely canon headcanoning Emma as a lesbian and that she has feelings for Reccoa makes the ending of zeta gundam absolutely heartbreaking.
Emma was my favourite character as well.
Wait shes a lesbian
Tumblr media
I know the context is probably emma's friend who is a girl but the way its translated accidently makes her a lesbian.

Today’s Big Bro is Char Aznable from Gundam! He loves his little sister (yes, also as adults)!

Char Aznable is such a tragic character. He never really moved on past his parents’ death. Once he murdered the Zabi family, he had nothing else to believe in. He tried to fight for Zeon zum Deikun’s ideals, but he didn’t have the same heart behind it. Zeon struck me as a very kind, level-headed man who just wanted the colonies to be free to govern themselves, whereas Char is the kind of person who will accomplish his goals at any means necessary.
Char either pushed everyone away, used them, or lost them. He pushed Sayla away and essentially abandoned her so he could get revenge on the Zabis. Lalah died in battle and haunted him to his dying day. He let others get close to him and pushed them away after a while. He used Quess as a pawn in his battle. He got close to Kamille, and he seemed to genuinely see the kid as a little brother, but he didn’t realize until it was too late that he’d led Kamille to become nothing more than a killing machine, and his actions directly led to Kamille’s severe brain injury in the Zeta Gundam and his subsequent coma. Don’t get me started on Amuro, he decided that this guy was the one person who understood him and also his mortal enemy.
After Kamille’s injury and hospitalization, Char blamed the Earth Federation and the Titans for what happened. He misapplied Zeon zum Deikun’s desire for the space colonies’ independence and used it to justify dropping an asteroid on Earth, freeing the colonies by any means necessary. And that any means wound up leading to him being so desperate that he threw everything away, even his own life, for a cause he didn’t even believe in.
Char Aznable wasn’t ever really Char, he had no idea who he was. He had to stop being Casval rem Deikun very young to look after Artesia. He became Edouard, the ward of a noble. Then Char, young soldier from the Texas colony. Then the Red Comet, Zeon’s ace fighter. Then Quattro Bajeena, the AEUG operative and big brother figure to Kamille Bidan. Then he became a new Char Aznable, the face of Neo Zeon. He died without a purpose, nothing more than a boy who never was able to grieve his mother.

Y'know...I've already known for years at this point that Zeta Gundam ended in a bloodbath and that Kamille was left in a vegetative state at the end, but it was still unbelievable to watch it all happen myself.
They really ended it like that.
Fuck.

It’s a bit of a lapse how they send Kamille to Glasgow to keep him out of the way of a Colony Drop targeting Dublin. An object that size being thrown at the Earth should be closer to a Dinosaur-Killer Asteroid, make a nuclear bomb look like a firecracker. Nowhere in the British Isles would be safe, probably nowhere in Western Europe.
Tumblr media
Maybe I'm a bit thrown off because later Gundam media like 08th MS Team and Gundam: The Origin had more hard sci-fi sensibilities, showed the Operation British colony drop killing billions of people with tsunamis and climate change beyond just the initial impact fireball. A massive crater where Sydney, Australia used to be and snow falling in the jungles of Southeast Asia

Nevertheless, it’s kinda weird how normal Earth looks in Gundam Unicorn and Hathaway, how there’s still an overpopulation problem. After the various massive impacts between MSG and Char’s Counterattack, Earth should be a wasteland, in the middle of the biggest mass extinction since The Great Dying. Maybe that plays a bigger role in Gundam F91, Gundam Crossbone, and Victory Gundam. I haven't gotten around to those yet.

probably my favorite little thing in witch from mercury that references past gundam (that isn't particularly obvious) is the duelist's creed
"victory is not decided by mobile suit performance alone, or the skill of the pilot alone. the result is the only truth"
this is of course a reference to the first thing to trigger an amuro BSOD in 0079- ramba ral telling him that he only won because of the performance of his mobile suit, instead of his skill as a pilot. (shortly after this, ramba ral ends up dying, so it's not like he can see amuro grow or anything.) obviously him outspeeding the gundam's response time later in the show decisively refutes this, but...
g-witch is quite notably about pilots and mobile suits and how specifically a pilot and a mobile suit work together for the best results. different pilots can do vastly different things, even in the same (or very similar) suits; just look at guel and lauda in their dilanzas, or chuchu vs. pretty much anyone else in a demi trainer.
of course, aerial and suletta are the epitome of this "horse and rider as one" type of feeling, which makes their separation this episode so interesting. even if aerial weren't, well, suletta's actual sister, they're the best matched mobile suit and pilot we've seen in terms of capabilities; nothing about the suit holds suletta back, and nothing about suletta's piloting skill holds aerial back. contrast the darilbalde's AI, or the entire GUND format killing its pilots, vs. how even with no permet functions whatsoever suletta knows exactly how to pilot aerial to the best of her capabilities.
this is what makes their separation so interesting, besides the character drama; they're basically the only mobile suit/pilot combo where one isn't holding the other back in some way we've seen in this show, so them being separated is a soft refutation (for a little bit) of one of its themes- the interface between humans and technology. anyway watch mobile suit gundam 0079 even if you started with mercury. it's got a surprisingly similar tone, and despite the old animation still looks very good and maintains a solid plot.
