sweat drips steadily down his forehead, a bead clinging to his chin before falling, his skin slick with exertion. the hunter’s gaze remains fixed, his grip unwavering on the hilt of his sword, its tip embedded deep into the bark of an ancient tree. the blade has pierced through fabric, pinning his opponent in place, while his free hand brandishes a smaller dagger. the battle has been unkind to him, his own clothing torn and bloodied, wounds exposed to the bitter bite of the wind. encounters like this are rare, it isn’t often he crosses paths with someone as formidable as the shadowguard, and even rarer that it escalates to a full-blown fight. yet ren should have known better & definitely should have exercised more caution before attempting to sneak aboard the yaoqing. 

his wounds will heal with time, but his clothes? those will need mending, another tedious task in a cycle that feels endless. constantly hunting, constantly hunted. every road he takes seems to lead to the same grim end. places like this, locked in violent struggle. 

a sword, a spear, a dagger. blood, shattered bones, and the ever-present specter of death.

“ don’t make any promises you can’t keep. ” with a sharp tug, the sword is freed from the tree, its blade sliding out of the bark with ease. ren swings it over his shoulder, settling it in its rightful place on his back, where it rests when not in use. his shoulders heave with each exhausted breath, his chest rising and falling as though his body has endured a blow powerful enough to snuff the life out of him. if only it were that simple. even this, a grueling battle, the strain etched into his muscles, is something he knows he will recover from soon enough. 

the dagger, however, remains in his grip, its cold steel a silent companion as he begins to retreat. his steps are deliberate, each one measured as he creates space between himself and his opponent. yet his gaze lingers, betraying a flicker of curiosity he doesn’t bother to mask. there’s something about the other man that piques his intrigue, a question left unspoken but hanging heavy in the air. it’s a fleeting expression, but it’s there, etched into his sharp eyes even as he moves to withdraw.

“ who are you ? ” tone low, he anticipates an honest answer at least. “ as far as i remember, we have never met before. ”

I love how mqf's oficial description is something like: a good heart who wants to help others but then you read the novel and his reaction to lqg trapping ten infected men who are crying in panic is "great now I can start to work in my experiments with decomposed people to find a cure" and gets out a lot of needles, which makes the man cry even harder.

Even if we only get bits of the other Cang Qiong sect leader's we can reach the conclusion that no one there is normal, sqq is just biased.

have realized that while i am not a fan necessarily of "people meet and immediately fall in love" i am a fan of "people meet and are immediately obsessed with each other." the love can come later but the absolute fixation should be immediate

Actually wait ok i'm not done. i'm actually so serious abt this. I think that a large part of the reason i got attached to metroid when i was younger is because it was the first media i discovered where the main female character was allowed to look like this:

and like. people thought she was cool. BOYS thought she was cool and I had never seen boys think a female character was cool before, much less want to be like one. she had all these interesting traits that I had only ever seen in male characters (person of few words, calm and ruthless bounty hunter persona, highly respected for skill, her appearance isn't mentioned Ever, etc etc). and that was formative for me and my relationship to gender i think
