Crystal Carapace
Crystal Carapace is an Aura Enchantment card from March of the Machine. It costs one Green and three generic to cast and goes on a creature. The enchanted creature gets a plus three boost to power, a plus three boost to toughness, and ward for two generic. Ward is an ability that automatically counters a spell an opponent controls targeting something unless the ward cost is paid. Crystal Carapace also has cycling for two generic, so you can pay two of any color and discard Crystal Carapace from your hand to draw a card. The flavor text is a quote from the compleated planeswalker Lukka, reading "Why won't you die, wretched flesh-beast?"
Yes, yes, I'm back with another protection spell. No one is surprised, least of all me. I just happen to enjoy protection magic.
I started building this spell on May 1st, deciding immediately that I was going to use crystals for it. I pulled out my correspondence binder and started flipping through, marking down every stone associated with protection and strength. My "final" list was amethyst, blue calcite, howlite, hemimorphite, and jasper.
I went back and forth on the format - since this is an Enchantment, aka a long-lasting spell, I wanted the spellcasting method to reflect that. My initial thought was a spell bag, as I have a lot of bags. But I had just finished building a spell jar, and I wanted an alternative. So I turned to other mages I know to discuss other forms of long-lasting spells.
Today, I settled on an enchanted bracelet. I pulled out my box of crystal beads and examined my options. None of the stones I wanted, other than jasper, were available to me immediately in stone form. I revisited my list of options and my binder and settled instead on bloodstone, hematite, howlite, and malachite.
Then I did some research. I knew that this card took place on the plane of Ikoria, as that's where Lukka had been dispatched to take over, but Ikoria is dominated by triomes which are dominated by particular monsters which are dominated by an apex monster. Anyway, I came to the conclusion that this was in the Zagoth triome, which is the Black-Green-Blue (though primarily Green) land of Beasts ruled by Brokkos the Forever-Beast, Apex of Forever. Since this is a monoGreen card featuring a loosely-defined Beast, I figured this was a safe bet. So I wrote a jaunty little activation phrase for notes.
Having figured out all this and still holding onto braincells (though I appear to have misplaced them now), I grabbed a new, loose-leaf paper to write the final spell down on. I barely remembered to add the accoutrements required to turn it into a bracelet instead of just rocks on a string. I added a "charge the thing" step and left a note to myself to remember to recharge and reactivate it as needed. Then I added my keywords in the upper corner for quick search in the filing system I have for spells in my spell binder.
I haven't yet created my own Crystal Carapace, but I wanted to share the process instead of the finished result. What do you think? Would you have adapted the card differently? How would you convey the key parts of the card?

Here’s a listing:
Yorion: Sky, so no particular triome.
Gyruda: Sea, so no particular triome, but most likely to be found somewhere off the coast of Raugrin.
Obosh: Unknown. Hellions in Magic tend to be associated with volcanoes, so an educated guess would be Raugrin near Lavabrink.
Jegantha: The blue crystals, mountains, and forests are the giveaway: Ketria.
Kaheera: Unknown. Educated guess based on the grass and trees is Indatha.
Lurrus: Confirmed Indatha in this article.
Lutri: Unknown. Being in the water with those tall spires in the background hints Raugrin.
Umori: Unknown. Gnarled forest of close trees is likely Zagoth.
Zirda: Confirmed Raugrin in the same article as Lurrus.
Keruga: Unknown. Tall dense trees is likely Zagoth.
Hey, do we know on which triomes the companions live?
For some, yeah. The five clades are tied to specific biomes. The ones that fall outside of that I don’t know.

Planeswalker Friend List Deets (How We Friended Each Other)
Met him on my first 'walk to Mirrodin. Apparently he created it himself!
Heard about her on Bant, and decided to see if I could find her so I could learn more about being an altruist. Told she was slain, so my trail went cold, but they were SO wrong about that!
Met him while studying on Arcavios... HOO boy, THAT was a mess! Anyway, he helped save the plane, so good on him.
Friended her a while back after she failed to seduce me (turns out there are limitations to charm magic when the intended target isn't that into you).
Twin sister of #3, with both sharing the same spark. Must be awkward if one decides to 'walk while the other's in the middle of something important like... I 'unno, peeing I guess?
For some reason, liking the natural world to any extent warrants a friend request from her. That and having a connection with animals.
Heard about my affinity for time, and so he tracked ME down! This is AFTER I spent a while tracking down info on the "Great Mender", though I thought it was a specialist on healing magic, heheh...
Friended him when he was still... sane, I guess? This thing's glitching out for some reason, so I can't delete it. Probably should visit that gadgeteer on Kamigawa to get it repaired...
Asked to friend me after overhearing that I don't eat beef or wear cowskin... then swore fiery, forgey vengeance on me if I EVER come onto his daughters. PRETTY sure there's no danger of that even if they're human, so... yay?
Saw me blundering through Ulvenwald and asked if I were worried about the wolves, to which I innocently replied with "What's wrong with wolves?" She led me to safety (aka a different plane) as a thank you for being so kind.
THIS is the life mage I was trying to find! I eventually tracked him to a book club or something on Kamigawa. The Nacatl of Naya called him "a hideously gruff, ill-mannered, insatiably berserk rebel", but I see him as kind, wise, and calm.
Kinda unsettling at first, but let's just say that putting the Greater Good first and foremost reveals an unseen side of this seemingly snobbish gentleman.
My first 'walk to Ravnica was... let's say "tumultuous". Actually, let's also say it was "accidentally crashed into an Izzet laboratory-ish". This guy said I was an automatic shoe-in to become a member of his guild, but he also advised me to consider whether I wanted to get tied to one plane. I was too busy staring at his... uh... eyes to remember what I said, or how he was added to my friends list.
Friended me later that day, in fact. Turns out a simple, sincerely friendly "Hi!" is enough to win her over... though she DID admit to almost turning me into a statue for being too close at first.
She was dealing with an emotional conundrum, so I offered some advice: "Just be true to yourself, and vent those pent-up emotions. Holding onto them isn't healthy, and your needs matter just as much as others' do." Hopefully she's in a better state of mind than before.
For some reason, liking the natural world to any extent warrants a friend request from her. That and having a connection with the seas and skies... wait... did I do this one already?
Met her through Ajani's book club... well, she's the host of said book club, so friending her was a no-brainer.
To be added...
Weird... why is this now playing up...? Was someone already on here? I should ask Denkimoto to look at this, too...
To be added...
Met her in book club. Turns out she's some form of skald from a plane called "EESH-a-lahn". I tried finding it, but no-one's ever heard of it, OR a city on that plane called "or-RATS-kuh", which is supposedly made of gold...
To be added...
Met him through a member of the book club, though he's not really into books. He does, however, like DRAGONS! I just had to visit their home plane, which is filled with so many kinds of dragon. Any fan of dragons is a friend of his, apparently. He also had a good chuckle at my "Hi, Khan!" joke, so it's now our informal greeting (his is "Oh, Zed!", cos it sounds like "O. Zed").
To be added...
This is the book club member via whom I indirectly met #23. She loves learning, and is currently delving into the ancient history of her people, "a time before the dragons"... which seems kinda familiar.
For some reason, liking the natural world to any extent warrants a friend request from her. That and having a connection with the elements... okay, this is DEFINITELY the third time I've posted this, I'm sure of it!
To be added...
To be added...
No idea why there even NEEDS to be a slot for my own contact details, but...

Big Tricks Standard
Here’s the refined version of the deck I’ve been playing. It does ok; the big thing for me is it’s really fun and dramatic. Pretty much every game leads to exciting top decks as early as turn two.
Creatures 20 1x Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider 4x Waker of Waves 4x Yidaro, Wandering Monster 4x Beanstalk Giant 2x Cragplate Baloth 1x Koma, Cosmos Serpent 4x Stonecoil Serpent
Other Spells 16 2x Wishclaw Talisman 4x Tibalt’s Trickery 2x Replicating Ring 4x Genesis Ultimatum 1x Emergent Ultimatum 1x Chromatic Orrery 2x Ugin, the Spirit Dragon
Lands 24 3x Snow-Covered Island 2x Snow-Covered Swamp 5x Snow-Covered Mountain 2x Snow-Covered Forest 4x Ketria Triome 4x Zagoth Triome 4x Fabled Passage
Piloting it:
Your ideal is to have a Stonecoil Serpent and Tibalt’s Trickery in your opening hand with two lands. Mulligan aggressively to an opening hand with at least two lands and one of your two combo pieces. If your opening hand has a decent amount of ramp and filtering (Waker, Yidaro, Beanstalk, the Ring) then you can consider keeping it but I usually toss those looking for combo pieces because that’s what this deck is about.
Be sure to full control (hold CTRL) and cast the serpent for X=0, and then cast TT with the serpent on the stack, targeting your own serpent. Fingers crossed you hit one of those big spells and not your little utility stuff. Note that if you hit the Beanstalk Giant, take a second to assess your board state and what you have in hand, and probably use it to search out another land unless you’ve got 7 lands on the board already with the proper mana fixing to cast Genesis Ultimatum. When you have need to decide on a basic land to grab, the proper play 9/10 times is to work toward fixing for Genesis Ult. I’d estimate that I hard cast that in just under half my games. Maybe 1/10 times the right play is to grab a Swamp if you have Emergent in hand and are close to being able to cast it, or if you need to cast your Wishclaw Talisman. Speaking of...
The Wishclaw Talisman is used to tutor up your combo pieces. Proper use of it is to have one of the two pieces in hand already, and enough mana to tutor up the other piece AND cast it that turn. While your opponent often won’t use the talisman and it’s fairly safe to assume you’ll only get one use from it, there’s no point giving them a chance to tutor an answer before you’ve had the opportunity to swing with a big hasty creature.
The other proper use of the talisman is if you already have a bunch of lands on the board in which case Ugin is a likely game ender. Again, best to have enough mana to be able to tutor and cast on the same turn.
My three favorite cards to snatch with Emergent Ult are Vorinclex, Yidaro, and Cragplate Baloth. No matter what I’m telling my opponent they are getting beat in the face that turn. It feels like there’s no real choice (the proper one us almost always to tuck Vorinclex), and sometimes that has led people to pick wrong. Alternatively, Waker of Waves almost always gets through and is decent for blunting a board of little guys.
Finally, you don’t need snow-covered basics. I just like the way they look.
#deck list#mtg#standard#kaldheim#tibalt#the more I play this deck the more I love it#and this version feels so much more streamlined and effective#there are lows#like a gen ult hitting 4 lands and a stonecoil serpent#or one game where I cast TT off of SS twice and they BOTH hit my Wishclaw Talisman copies#but the flipside is dropping Ugin and two or three big creatures off of the Gen Ult#I've had one dream game with this#TT off of SS turn 2#into the Ugin with two big creatures#there's no way your opponent comes back from that lmao

Note
I (who was playing during Tarkir) always call the wedges by their clan names. My girlfriend started playing a year ago, and she calls the wedges by their triome names. This leads to: "hey I made a new Zagoth deck" "Zagoth is Sultai, right?" "I think so?". Did R&D expect this to happen? Do you expect the two of us will ever agree on what to call the wedges?
We assume most players will use the clan names.

Magic: the Gathering - Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths
Geography Lesson - Ikoria has five major geographical regions called "triomes." Each triome has its own unique terrain, a dominant clade of monsters, and a fearsome apex monster. Note
Not gonna lie, I do kinda love Ikoria too.
However, I would like to see a sanctuary for each triome, even if Idatha’s is floating around everywhere. Correct me if I’m wrong, but Ketria and Zagoth have no Sanctuaries at all, right? Or are they there and we just didn’t see them?
Hey mark, If possible can we know the short list of potential planes to return in the near future?
Worlds on the short list to revisit: (that we haven’t revisited yet)
Alara
Amonkhet
Arcavios
Eldraine
Fiora
Ikoria
Ixalan
Kaladesh
