I know this happened last year, but Illinois has its first reservation! The Department of the Interior placed 130 acres of land in DeKalb County near Shabbona State Park into trust for the Prairie Band Potawatomi.

"Nearly 200 years after Native Americans were forced out of Illinois, the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation has become the first federally recognized tribal nation in the state after a decision from the U.S. Department of the Interior last week.

The move represents the first victory in the tribe’s larger effort to regain the approximately 1,280 acres of its ancestral land in Illinois via legislation in both the General Assembly and Congress.

But the tribe first had to spend $10 million over the last 20 years to repurchase the first 130 acres of the Shab-eh-nay Reservation, located in what is now DeKalb County, that the federal government illegally sold out from under Chief Shab-eh-nay around 1850.

Nearly two centuries later, Prairie Band Chairman Joseph “Zeke” Rupnick – a fourth-great grandson of Chief Shab-eh-nay – signed paperwork on Friday that allows the Department of the Interior to place those 130 acres into a trust, which gives the tribe sovereignty over the land.

Rupnick said he’d heard the story of his ancestral land in Illinois “ever since I was a child” from his grandparents, and said his mother started the push to reclaim the Prairie Band’s land three decades ago when she was the tribe’s chairperson.

“For me to actually get it accomplished and signed, honestly, words couldn't describe the feeling that I had that, you know, when I actually completed that task,” he told Capitol News Illinois on Monday, adding that the credit should be shared with his entire counsel and tribal membership more broadly. “And now the real work begins.”"

It's Storyteller Saturday! Could you tell me a little about the early drafts of I Met a Girl in the Graveyard?

Heyo! I met a girl in the graveyard was called Graveyard Lesbians until @shannonsketches helped me with a title (and will be making the cover art i am so hype)

The biggest change from beginning to now has been Renfield actually. He was always an old rescue Persian, but he belonged to Josie and was named Lord Ruthven. The name changed based on vibes, but it didn't feel as clean to have Renfield living at someone else's house with how contained the plot already was location-wise. I don't think we ever actually go to Josie's house in this draft?

Here's some early concept art. Very important.

Magnus' ending also shifted, since I didn't have a solid third act in mind, just the very end, where he remained in Renfield's body and enjoyed life as a quiet spoiled housecat. In the previous draft, he was trapped in a poppet then thrown into the bottom of the mines like he actually wanted which also felt really unsatisfying. Since then I've been able to tie things up more cleanly, and with far better planting and payoff. Don't worry though, there will still be a haunted doll in draft 2 yet to come.

I also had renfield become a kind of all powerful necromancer thing which felt really cool in my head, but ultimately served no purpose to the story since the emotional climax in the mines mattered more than a big explosive actiony climax. But also please imagine a tiny cat with his floating evil spellbook raising the dead. It brings me joy.

Wip The scarred angel / DRAFT Zero - actual chp 9 "The den"

What they see are metal bars running from the ground to the ceiling same as a prison cell, bare and completely empty but for the deadly stink of urine mingled with the stale of other non specified substances.

Ashley clenches her teeth while she swipes the rye of the torch's light over the rock walls, the unwilling tension clasping at her nape and the pit of her stomach obviously going unnoticed by the two women with her.

Which is exactly how it has to be.

The lingering stink reminding ammonia's does speak loud enough about people that have been held captive inside.

Now the cell's door has been left locked, the key nowhere to be seen.

Since there is nothing more to check they resume the inspection and walk deeper into the gallery.

Eyes open wide in shock when they push open the second door.

"Is this a lab ?" Amy speaks first, almost in aw, while she takes in the surroundings.

A fair work has been achieved to get this part of the gallery almost matching a typical white collar working space, including a ventilation system and rather some equipment, considering what's been left, to re-create a functional setting.

"They lack on the decoration side..."Amy mutters in bitter irony to balance the surprise.

These walls are bare indeed but for a few office magnetic boards that have been swiped clean, and a regular paper print of the Holy Mary stuck crookedly on the wall near the entrance.

Amy follows Ashley's gaze lingering over that one.

"Do they pray?" she asks not holding back the disbelief in her pitch at the sight of the sacred image.

Pretty much out of place, to say the least, borderline surrealistic.

Ashley's eyes narrow for a moment, brow furrowed, then she shrugs as a response and sweeps her attention across the rest of the space.

Smut is a part of the plot, explicit and graphic sexual descriptions.

Mu Qing is stunned by the mere mental images of washing Hua Cheng's face and feeding Xie Lian from his own chopsticks. “I think he likes that a lot,” Xie Lian says smoothly, coming up from behind Mu Qing. His hand gently reaches up to pull a pin out of Mu Qing's hair and let his hair cascade down his shoulders. “Don't you, Mu Qing?”

If your characters were dishes at a restaurant, what kind of restaurant would they be served at and what kind of dishes would they be?

As always, these characters are from I met a Girl in the Graveyard

Kaz is a 5'2 gym bro who loves halloween and landscaping. She dyes her hair pink, drinks too much coffee, and spoils her geriatric cat Renfield (so named because he used to like eating bugs). All this leads to the obvious: She is a sugar-filled chocolate frappe with a heap of whipped cream and chocolate syrup drizzled on top, specifically purchased from a locally-owned cafe that overcharges on this specific drink because it's a headache to make, but it's still popular.

Josie is much more level-headed but still undeniably approachable -- a squid-ink fettucini cooked al dente with alfredo sauce, with the perfect amount of seasoning and butter. She's a pushover and a people pleaser who struggles to speak up when her boundaries are crossed, but she's also incredibly passionate and intelligent. She'd be at a mid-tier Italian restaurant where you can expect each plate to be approx $20-30, but the bread they serve you before the meal is to die for.

(The squid ink pasta specifically is because she's spooky and wouldn't accept being just any color pasta)

Lucy is (a ghost) a deceptively sweet, incredibly intelligent woman who has a not-so-secret mischievous side. She would likely be a unique, surprisingly alcoholic drink at a trendy bar that you wouldn't expect to find anywhere else. I'm thinking it would be something really fun like an alcoholic dark chocolate-lavender ice cream float, with black edible glitter mixed in (because she's extra). It would be mildly sweet, but not too sweet that you couldn't taste the alcohol. I unfortunately know next to nothing about alcohol types so I'm just sort of gesturing vaguely at whatever that one is.

Bonus: Renfield is a tuna salad sandwich from Subway. It probably won't make you sick, but do you really want to risk it?

Lyarshu, Rena, and Erudan become very close friends with each other during their journey together. Outside of each other, Lyarshu has his mother who raised him and is the reason he wants money, Rena has her father who raised her and now she wants to do him and his homeland proud by being a famous performer, and Erudan had his parents who he idolized growing up for their awesome skills and wants to be a leader like them one day. Hashtag only child, hashtag "sheltered" kid.

(2. What's your OC's favorite season, and what about it do they like the most?

Lyarshu likes the season for harvesting sugarcane because it meant he and his mother will get paid. Rena loves the stormy season because she favors using the power of fluid. Erudan used to love hunting season because it was a time for the tribe to come together.

(3. What's a completely random fact about your OC that no one suspects or you always wanted to bring it up in the story but never found a perfect scene to do it?

I always imagine them in a modern AU wherein Lyarshu is the son of some bigshot in the government at day and is the kingpin of special operatives at night. Erudan drives for him at night (In this sitch, their dragon Silver is a car. Or something like that.), but otherwise he's attending to pet sitting/grooming services. And Rena's… there, taunting their enemies. She's a menace. She's random.

Sarah Linwood, from The Mistress of Rosehorn Hall, absolutely hates public gestures. She enjoys pecks on the hand, cheek, or lips, holding hands or arms, and calling each other pet names in public. But anything grander than that feels like a trap.

Public proposals, massive gifts like a new carriage, proclamations of affection...these are all uncomfortable for Sarah. For Lord Rufus, a knight from the Renaissance, public displays of affection and devotion are his bread and butter...but thankfully, Sarah is very receptive to his written devotion in poems, letters, and even songs.

Back slowly to feel like herself, considering the situation, Amy looks away from the outside landscape zipping past and her gaze indulges in secret admiration at Ashley's profile.

Sharpen features, straight nose, long eyelashes....And the long scar cutting through her cheek almost to the jawline.

Amy doesn't really sees that one, truth be told, none of her scars, really, and not because she had that much of a chance to get used to.

It's just that when she leans eyes upon that girl there is so much more to be enraptured to.
