I know this happened last year, but Illinois has its first reservation! The Department of the Interior placed 130 acres of land in DeKalb County near Shabbona State Park into trust for the Prairie Band Potawatomi.

!!! That's huge! I had no idea!! Congratulations to be Prairie Band Potawatomi!!!

"Nearly 200 years after Native Americans were forced out of Illinois, the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation has become the first federally recognized tribal nation in the state after a decision from the U.S. Department of the Interior last week.

The move represents the first victory in the tribe’s larger effort to regain the approximately 1,280 acres of its ancestral land in Illinois via legislation in both the General Assembly and Congress.

But the tribe first had to spend $10 million over the last 20 years to repurchase the first 130 acres of the Shab-eh-nay Reservation, located in what is now DeKalb County, that the federal government illegally sold out from under Chief Shab-eh-nay around 1850.

Nearly two centuries later, Prairie Band Chairman Joseph “Zeke” Rupnick – a fourth-great grandson of Chief Shab-eh-nay – signed paperwork on Friday that allows the Department of the Interior to place those 130 acres into a trust, which gives the tribe sovereignty over the land.

Rupnick said he’d heard the story of his ancestral land in Illinois “ever since I was a child” from his grandparents, and said his mother started the push to reclaim the Prairie Band’s land three decades ago when she was the tribe’s chairperson.

“For me to actually get it accomplished and signed, honestly, words couldn't describe the feeling that I had that, you know, when I actually completed that task,” he told Capitol News Illinois on Monday, adding that the credit should be shared with his entire counsel and tribal membership more broadly. “And now the real work begins.”"

It's Storyteller Saturday! Could you tell me a little about the early drafts of I Met a Girl in the Graveyard?

Heyo! I met a girl in the graveyard was called Graveyard Lesbians until @shannonsketches helped me with a title (and will be making the cover art i am so hype)

The biggest change from beginning to now has been Renfield actually. He was always an old rescue Persian, but he belonged to Josie and was named Lord Ruthven. The name changed based on vibes, but it didn't feel as clean to have Renfield living at someone else's house with how contained the plot already was location-wise. I don't think we ever actually go to Josie's house in this draft?

Here's some early concept art. Very important.

Magnus' ending also shifted, since I didn't have a solid third act in mind, just the very end, where he remained in Renfield's body and enjoyed life as a quiet spoiled housecat. In the previous draft, he was trapped in a poppet then thrown into the bottom of the mines like he actually wanted which also felt really unsatisfying. Since then I've been able to tie things up more cleanly, and with far better planting and payoff. Don't worry though, there will still be a haunted doll in draft 2 yet to come.

I also had renfield become a kind of all powerful necromancer thing which felt really cool in my head, but ultimately served no purpose to the story since the emotional climax in the mines mattered more than a big explosive actiony climax. But also please imagine a tiny cat with his floating evil spellbook raising the dead. It brings me joy.

Wip TSA / The scarred angel

Chp 8 / A bit of context : Ashley and Amy are on a dangerous journey, Amy asks about drug cartels and Ashley declares she fears them.

........

.....

"I find this hard to believe." Amy scowls, an edge in her voice, not appreciating the irony she's picking up from that statement.

Seriously, how can one be scared and talk with such an aplomb at the same time?

Amy would call it a contradiction at least.

Shoulders shrug : "That's up to you, really." is the matter-of-factly answer.

Ashley's voice is even, as if she's really unconcerned about convincing Amy about that.

The words get almost drown out by the motor's roaring and Amy has to sharp her hearing to grasp them.

Then, after a pause, like she's having a second thought, Ashley adds with a firmer and more audible tone :

"I would be insane not to be."

"What would they do?" Amy prompts her to develop further.

Not sure of the best way to ask for specifics or if an answer would help to release the tension caused by the thought of what might wait for them at the end of that road trip.

As if dissecting a subject had ever helped to dissolve deepest fears.

"You don't need details right now."

Despite the dry answer Amy senses the presence of some dark power lingering between mere words, of course she can't put her finger on but it's definitely there and it has been so for a while.

Of course Ashley wouldn't add anything because, really, what's the point?

Amy thinks otherwise though, she decides that she rather prefers for her to keep talking, even if it's about horrors.

Amy will take it and let herself be lulled by her voice.

"No details huh?" she pulls a different string : "So....what's the best behavior when you deal with those people ?"

A few days before she did want to interview this girl but she never got the chance to prepare the questions so that now she jumps in headfirst.

"You must be kind of brave to face them...." she suggests.

In her innermost self Amy truly believes so, there is no question about that girl being brave.

Somehow she's kind of talking to herself there, rolling ideas as she does just before actually write an article.

But her words fall in no abyss this time.

Ashley snaps her head, brow furrowed and Amy's greeted not with a laugh this time but with a look that one could define as 'outraged up to shocked'.

"Nobody's fucking brave here!" she spits out the words, and this time definitely there is a heat in her voice.

Taken aback Amy instinctively rises hands, palms forwards, in a 'calm down' gesture.

Deep down she'll even think she's the one with reasons to be upset but clearly common conventions don't apply here so that she disregards the thought.

Still too self conscious of the heat invading her nape and the apologetic tone in her own words.

"It's just.....You must be brave to be able to deal with them".

Isn't that fucking obvious?

Amy scans through her souvenirs of what chief Herrera said a few days before, as he'd never knew who had scarred Ashley since she never came clean on that.

Morales's words echo in her head too.

"The day someone from the cartels gets her she's doomed. They don't go easy on fucking snitches."

With the little she saw in the last days and, even more, hours, Amy has a more precise idea how the drug lords would 'take care' of Ashley for tipping the cops.

The thought sends another cold shiver running along her spine but Ashley's following words don't leave her the time to wonder further : "If they catch you generally shut the fuck up, that's what you do!"

She shakes her head in disapproval and tsks : "Or you can pray, if you want. I'll suggest you do it silently though !"

Normally Ashley would either add even more sarcasm to the point of being cruel or grant a silent contempt at most.

But in the long silent minute that follows she finds herself too aware of Amy's eyes upon her instead.

Brow deep in furrow, lips pressed and knuckles getting white around the wheel as she tightens the grip she reconsiders about what to say next and takes a deep breath before quickly glancing back at her.

"That's bullshit Amy. We'll be lucky if they put a bullet in our head right away!"

She pauses then adds gloomy : "If we aren't …."

The blood from Amy's face seems to have drained off, gives her complexion a greenish hue.

Reading fear and anxiety in her look has the power to unexpectedly clutch Ashley's stomach so that she brings her gaze back on the road ahead to avert that sight while abusing her lower lips.

Frowning at her own reaction.

What she knows and consequentially would tell doesn't click with what she's feeling and it's unsettling.

Amy saying - 'Sorry' -, in her small voice, has the power to unsettle her even more.

She has to go back!

Ashley sucks the air in then forcibly huffs it out to release the tension in hands and jaw.

When talking again she puts the effort in for her voice being even : "Do you know what you do if they catch you? You scream, loudest as you possibly can. You scream your guts out....."

A character you haven't talked about as often: Is the character's family traditional or more open to different lifestyles?

Thanks for the ask! (FYI, the question comes from the Family Questions to Improve Your Character post.)

Context:

The world of Orbis has different family configurations in terms of structure. For example, the Verdants consider a standard family unit to have like three or four generations in a household (because many members of a single generation end up dying or getting taken away by the government for being too magical), while the rest of the Emeri consider the standard family unit to be three parents and a child at the minimum, and Damasqus reveneri may practice polygamy, as long as the polycule produces at least one child (so of course they're facing a population issue and the situation of having too many tourists and immigrants).

Regarding similar family lifestyles, the general way of life in Orbis demands that a child be cared for and be taught in the ways of life that their parent/s live.

Actual Answer:

Lerln Vertigris, a Verdant, is more closed to different lifestyles as she doesn't want to "lose" anyone else in her family, in any way. It's also important to note that she (and her mother) served rebels against the government, so she'd be protective of those she considers as part of the community. This becomes an issue with her son, Lyarshu, and Renatheia later on.

In contrast to this, Damasq revenerus Kaine Korvus Maverick has two wives and a son, and no plans (yet) to expand his family in any way. However, since he and his wives are intellectuals, they are quite open to most kinds of lifestyles. In fact, he and his wife Aria live apart from each other to protect their sanity, but for the sake of their boy Ireus they always visit each other for the holidays. Meanwhile, his other wife Katarina isn't even romantically interested in either one of them; she's just there to enjoy having the last name "Maverick" and having their company from time to time.

Then there's also Jakub Lutkyszas. His unit was quite horrified when his giXX (magic index; also known as power level) went beyond what the strongest magic limiter can handle. But, they definitely shrugged, tried to hide it as best as they can, and bought him a one-way ticket out of the Emerald Kingdom. That's a family who isn't traditional; a traditional Emeri family would have reported to the clergy about their member having uncontrollable magic so the clergy can "fix" them. He has not yet seen or heard from any of them ever since, but who knows? Maybe he gets to do so during the ending of Liberatio?

We don't have to eat in the main banquet hall; we can eat somewhere more private.” Mu Qing hates that Hua Cheng is able to look so nonchalant when he's naked and disheveled. “What do you think?” The idea of a private dinner with his lovers is almost as enticing as bathing with them. Mu Qing is stunned by the mere mental images of washing Hua Cheng's face and feeding Xie Lian from his own chopsticks. “I think he likes that a lot,” Xie Lian says smoothly, coming up from behind Mu Qing. His hand gently reaches up to pull a pin out of Mu Qing's hair and let his hair cascade down his shoulders. “Don't you, Mu Qing?”

If your characters were dishes at a restaurant, what kind of restaurant would they be served at and what kind of dishes would they be?

Kaz is a 5'2 gym bro who loves halloween and landscaping. She dyes her hair pink, drinks too much coffee, and spoils her geriatric cat Renfield (so named because he used to like eating bugs). All this leads to the obvious: She is a sugar-filled chocolate frappe with a heap of whipped cream and chocolate syrup drizzled on top, specifically purchased from a locally-owned cafe that overcharges on this specific drink because it's a headache to make, but it's still popular.

Josie is much more level-headed but still undeniably approachable -- a squid-ink fettucini cooked al dente with alfredo sauce, with the perfect amount of seasoning and butter. She's a pushover and a people pleaser who struggles to speak up when her boundaries are crossed, but she's also incredibly passionate and intelligent. She'd be at a mid-tier Italian restaurant where you can expect each plate to be approx $20-30, but the bread they serve you before the meal is to die for.

(The squid ink pasta specifically is because she's spooky and wouldn't accept being just any color pasta)

Lucy is (a ghost) a deceptively sweet, incredibly intelligent woman who has a not-so-secret mischievous side. She would likely be a unique, surprisingly alcoholic drink at a trendy bar that you wouldn't expect to find anywhere else. I'm thinking it would be something really fun like an alcoholic dark chocolate-lavender ice cream float, with black edible glitter mixed in (because she's extra). It would be mildly sweet, but not too sweet that you couldn't taste the alcohol. I unfortunately know next to nothing about alcohol types so I'm just sort of gesturing vaguely at whatever that one is.

Bonus: Renfield is a tuna salad sandwich from Subway. It probably won't make you sick, but do you really want to risk it?

For now Ashley decides to not push it.

She still thinks that she's going to get Amy's back on the safe side of the border sooner than later.

In the meantime they finally managed to get into that fucking red mercedes and drive away.

"We'll better make a stop." Ashley states.

Amy rummages on the top pocket of her backpack : "I still have some money and my credit card, we can find something for the night and....SHIT!" 

Ashley gives her a surprised look.

"I have to call Phil!"

Who's Phil?

The question crosses Ashley's mind but she doesn't voice it.

"He must be worry sick, if he already got a news about what happened...." Amy's voice trails off, clearly concerned by that eventuality.

She glares at Ashley : "Too bad, I don't have my phone anymore though..."

Ashley barely arches a brow mostly unimpressed by both the implications and the sarcasm held in the remark but still takes note of Amy's urgency : "We'll get a burner at the next gas station."

Right...

The question sounds stupid in her own head but Amy asks anyway : "What about you? Don't you have someone to call?"

At first Amy is met with the usual silence in the guise of an answer, Ashley's gaze stay fixed at the road ahead.

She's not eager to talk with the chief because he'll ask about Amy and Ashley really doesn't look forwards to answer about that.

Instead she spiels off to herself that Amy will call this Phil guy alright and she'll get whatever flight in a couple of day at the most, away from there.

Ashley will be done with it.

Also, it's unlikely that Herrera knows more than her right now anyway, so, what's the point?

Let the man cook for a couple of days.

Amy's mind wanders to a few days before at the police headquarters and the chief telling the story of how him and Ashley had met.

She can't help to wonder what Ashley's life has been like since.

Has she really been by herself all this time?

Amy's the opposite of a person with an intense social life but finds difficult to believe that Ashley just keep strolls by herself through such a hostile world.

She has known hostile but this is a new different level.

Does Ashley live too in survive mode?

Even with having been directly involved with her endeavors the last couple of hours everything Amy's witnessed still feels alien to her and she certainly must return the same impression.

And yet ..... a flickering thought pops, tastes like certitude.

The most alien of all even if she's still anxious to call Phil to not keep him worried in the dark.

Contentment.

Unexpected contentment.

Being with Ashley makes her content in the weirdest way.

What of the wives and husbands of the lords and ladies that married into Rosehorn Hall? Sarah sees them next to their noble spouses; among those bearing the Rufus name, all but a few lived normal lives and died normal deaths. All of it centers on the Battle of Tewkesbury. The few portraits that exist from before the Wars of the Roses depict different family members than the dozen who have swapped ownership of Rosehorn Hall over the centuries. First:

A warm bath would've been nice. Settling at his desk with a cup of coffee and completing his notes on the case was the next best alternative.

Last:

We are the keepers of the gate between this realm and the other. It's our responsibility to maintain and wield this knowledge against forces that might act against the greater good of humanity. A noble cause, in the author's opinion, and one worthy of study and practice. Someone has to hold the line.
