Overall Rating: 9.1/10

Personal Opinion: Openly Straight’s ending, while adequate, still left a lot to be desired. Mostly, in the Ben front. So this book, centered around Ben immediately after the events of the first book, feels like a gift. It’s funny and wholesome and if you already loved how sweet Ben is in the original book, then you’ll absolutely adore him here.

Do I Own This Book? Yup. I remember the day I found out about the sequel, I purchased it online and had to read it immediately.

Spoilers Below For My Likes & Dislikes:

Likes:

- Ben, sweet fucking Ben. He really is Magenta and the way everyone else saw it but him is so special to me. He’s such a good person and people just naturally like him because of that. Rafe, Hannah, Toby, his teachers, and even Steve. He works so hard to be where he is and he does so while also being fundamentally honest and genuinely kind to others. That’s the kind of king behavior that I can get behind.

- Something that truly makes my respect for Ben soar is his speech after receiving the Pappas Award. He decided to tell the truth about his cheating but also, he told the truth about Peter Pappas. That takes a lot of courage and the fact that he admitted to loving Rafe and then holding Rafe’s hand on campus in front of everyone, that boy is braver and stronger than he knows and I love that.

- I also can’t forget when Toby came out as genderfluid and while the baseball team was all being douches, he went up to hug Toby in the middle of the cafeteria. That scene almost made me tear up. Toby truly deserves that support and it made me so happy when Ben called him brave in his speech.

- Yet more scenes that made me respect Ben more is when he owned up to his mistakes. When he apologized to Rafe for writing, “Alcohol is bad for me. Rafe = Alcohol” on Rafe’s note. Or when he apologized to Hannah for accidentally leading her on and putting her through all that confusion and anger. Or again, when he exposed himself for cheating (on a test). I cannot stress enough just how good of a person Ben is. And I think it’s amazing because he was raised by such a shit dad.

- Rafe rubbed me the wrong way in a lot of scenes but he also did good here and there. Nursing Ben back to health when he got food poisoning even after reading that note was sweet of him. Trying to be friends with Ben even when it hurt to see Ben moving on was respectable. And like before, I adore all of their conversations. They talk on such a deep level that it’s really no wonder they fell in love.

- The most romantic scene for me though was when Ben took Rafe away from the dance. He saw Rafe being depressed at the bleachers and he decided to cheer him up. They went to the beach and they screamed at the ocean and Ben tackled Rafe to the sand in a dumb game that only they (and Toby and Albie) understood. Ben was so stressed throughout the book that every time I saw him having fun with Rafe, Toby, and/or Albie, it just made my heart soar.

- I love Rafe’s parents too. As I said before. They’re so dorky and hilarious and I love that they were about to adopt Ben if he had nowhere else to go.

- I love how the story began and ended the same way. With a swimming lesson. Except instead of wanting to vanish like in the beginning, Ben saved himself.

Dislikes:

- Fuck Tommy Mendenhall. I did not think there could be someone worse that Steve and Zack but this dude is out here hazing the freshmen by humiliating them and also making rape jokes. If I could decapitate him, I would.

- I kind of wish we saw how the baseball team reacted to Ben and Rafe being together. How many saw this coming? How many are shocked? How do they feel about their captain being not so straight? Where is Robinson and how does he feel about any of this seeing as he is actually gay and a jock? I know Robinson probably hurt Toby but I so wish I knew what was going on with him. Last we saw, he was the target of homophobic comments from Steve and Zack, he did not deserve that.

- I get that Ben and Rafe are from two different worlds so they won’t always see eye to eye on things but I hate how callous Rafe was and how casually he joked about Ben’s spending habits. Like that is so rude. Even worse was when Rafe seemed to refuse to accept that Ben didn’t identify as queer in any way. When I was young, I definitely sided more with Rafe on this. I still understand where Rafe is coming from. I mean, if I was told by my partner that they “are attracted to girls and also me,” I’d feel emasculated. I wish Rafe had worded it that way though instead of constantly insisting (even if he was joking) that Ben was in denial.

- That being said, it does feel like bi erasure that Ben won’t admit he’s queer in any way. Being attracted to Rafe automatically means you’re not straight! I know a guy who was dating someone pre-transition and when they transitioned into a boy, his attraction didn’t change. And instead, he just changed his identity from straight to queer because he still liked his partner. It’s that easy, Ben.

- Also, where’s Bryce? I know he was pulled out of school and he was mentioned throughout the story but considering he was Ben’s best friend at some point, I feel like some phone calls or like, a letter, would be warranted? Ben mentioned not having anyone to talk to after the Rafe debacle but what about Bryce??? Unless, Bryce’s whole thing in Utah meant no contact with the outside world for a while. In which case, that would’ve been nice to know.

Warren Peace knew two things. One: he liked you. A lot. And two: he didn’t have that much to offer you. He didn’t like to think about the latter all that much.

With his dad being one of the most infamous super-villains in the entire world, he had an interesting reputation to say the least. You didn’t seem to mind, which he was thankful for, but he didn’t want his public image to affect your own. In fact, that was the last thing he wanted.

At first, to amend this, he just attempted to stay away from you. Keyword: attempted. It wasn’t unexpected of him to act pretty standoffish to 98% of the student population of Sky High. He dressed in all black, he didn’t talk much, he shot fire from his hands, and most of the kids he went to school with would swear he never smiled.

But he did smile. In front of you, anyway. Even then, it wasn’t all that often that you saw it. See, Warren’s smiles tended to be soft, and most of them were when you weren’t looking. He cared about you so much. So, so much, and for this reason, he knew he had to get you something amazing for your birthday.

His hunt started at the mall with Will and Layla, who were more than happy to help him look around for something you might like. They spent pretty much the entire day wandering in and out of stores until finally, he found a candle he thought you might like (it smelled like rain), some fuzzy slippers, and a mug that said something ironic. You’d like that for sure.

Once he had a present nailed down, he wanted to make sure you had a cake for your birthday. Of course, he should have known better than to ask Zack for help, of all people, but in his defense, everyone else was busy and he didn’t know how to bake a cake to save his life. The first cake burned in the oven. Badly. Mostly because the two had forgotten to set an alarm before going off to play video games.

The second attempt wasn’t perfect, by any means. It had come out a little misshapen (he wasn’t sure how, but it had), but it was better than anything. Besides, it was your favorite flavor.

Zack had never seen Warren work so carefully on anything in his life before. He frosted the cake with careful hands, sprinkled on sugar sprinkles in your favorite colors, used frosting to carefully letter a message that said “Happy Birthday, Y/N!” and then stuck the candles into the cake in very precise spots. It took a long time, but finally, he was satisfied with it.

Magenta and Ethan showed up a little later to help decorate Warren’s place, and after them, Layla and Will showed up with pizza, drinks, and snacks. Once everything was perfect, the doorbell rang again and Warren froze. That meant one thing: you’d finally arrived.

So, Warren went to get the door. You were standing there with a soft smile on your face, your backpack with you to “work on homework”, no clue in the world that Warren had organized all of this for you until the door opened and you stepped inside to find the place decked out with balloons and streamers and a birthday banner.

“Happy birthday.” Warren grinned.

You stood there for a long moment, a shocked look on your face. You finally looked up at Warren, who looked increasingly worried the longer you were quiet. Finally, you said, “You did all this for me?”

He shrugged. “I had help.”

“But he organized everything.” Will chimed.

“And he picked out your present.”

“And frosted the cake.” Zack added.

Unsure of what else to say, you wrapped him in a tight hug. He stood there, confused for a moment before his arms slowly and carefully closed around you. He wasn’t a hugger, but for you…he could be. Especially on your birthday of all days. Honestly, he’d been kind of scared you’d be…well, scared to hug him. A lot of people were, given his tough exterior. And yet, there you were, wrapped up in his arms.

“Here.” Layla handed you the giftbag Warren had put together. “The rest of the presents are over on the coffee table.”

“This is for me?”

“I know it’s not much…”

You looked through the goodies Warren had picked out for you, a giant smile on your face. “It’s perfect, Warren. Thank you.”

You and the gang all had some pizza and played some MarioKart and then afterward, Warren wandered out to the kitchen and started lighting the birthday candles on the cake with the tip of his finger. You followed him out there, watching him with a smile as he carefully lit each of the candles.

“Your powers are so cool.”

He chuckled. “Yeah?”

“Yeah. You’re like…a real life Prince Zuko.” You decided, nodding once you said it. Yeah, that was an adequate description.

“Never heard that one before.”

You were quiet for a second, looking up at him before saying, “Thank you, Warren. For all of this. This is the best birthday I’ve had in a long time.”

“You deserve a good birthday.” He motioned you closer. “Well, come on, these candles aren’t gonna blow themselves out.”

You stepped closer and blew out the candles mostly in one breath. The gang, who’d noticed you left to go to the kitchen, clapped and cheered.

“Did you make a wish?” Zack asked.

You nodded and looked up at Warren and slipped your hand into his. He gave it a gentle squeeze. “Yeah, but…it already came true.”

-Queer: Bi -Was perhaps not as surprised as she should have been when she made the first move in asking Bulk if they could try and be more than friends. -Glad that Bulk wanted to take things slow, since the first time they tried to go to bed, she had horrible flashbacks involving Drakkon and puked all over herself and Bulk. -Had the weirdest goddamn shovel talk from Skull--which was super effective given that the man is CoLd BlOoDeD from his time as a spy; like, seriously, jesus christ. -Will swear every other sentence on a bad day, and the only way to get her to stop is for her to do it in front of Bulk, because he gets this stupid, gooey look on his face that would put a Beagle puppy to shame. -Teaches small children from the scattered colonies and the ones coming back to Angel Grove gymnastics and ballet every two weeks; no makeup, hair done up in a bun and wearing glaringly bright colors so their parents don’t freak out and remember that she’d technically their current ruler. -The one thing she loves about living in Drakkon’s old palace is that there is a bath the size of a swimming pool and she loves just adding salts and oils, soaking and floating in it for hours at a time--once and a while even telling Bulk to stop watching her from the edge and join her.

-Queer: Demi. -Never thought in a million years that someone like Kim would ever ask him out, so of course he laughed when she asked him--and then immediately felt like shit when her face went slack and she almost started crying. -Commissioned for materials so he could build the first non-Drakkon building structure in Angel Grove in twenty years and made Kim blush five shades of red when he presented her a little domed shrine-like building that was bigger on the inside with a sunken interior and was filled to the brim with books and other salvaged learning material--and a little lounge area that was a close replica of Ernie’s Juice Bar; named it ‘Queen of Hart’s’ and painted it magenta and Burberry. -Assisted Zack, Trini, and Skull on Kim’s request to start the rebuilding process, which included teaching the sentries in trade, ethics, and just basic knowledge that a lot of the younger ones never got during Drakkon’s reign. -Is quite possibly the best goddamn history teacher that any child has ever had in Angel Grove. -Can talk for hours and hours and hours about the Ancient Greeks, the French Revolution, the Fall of the Czar, the Hundred Years War, the Classics, Victorian England, the Modernist Writing era, Architectural movments, and the rise and fall of cinema as true art; all the while having Kim just sit and listen to him while drinking milk and coffee.

Sky High: Magenta x Ethan, post-canon

a multi-chapter reunion story, in continuity with Love, Unspoken

Magenta is dreading the reunion in a mild “I’m in a successful band that has nothing to do with my powers” sort of a way, but she looks forward to seeing the friends she’s kept up with at the party.

Then, for a second she doesn’t recognize Ethan in his adult form, and things long forgotten (like her break-up with Zach) feel all too relevant again.

Chapter Four: With Friends Like These?

In the morning she woke to a few messages from Layla, and a series from Ethan. She read Layla's first. One was reassuring her that the doctors thought Warren would be fine, but getting him released would take some time in the morning. The next said Magenta didn't need to bring her anything.

Don't be ridic, Magenta texted back. I want to see you, and I leave this afternoon.

She did not open the texts from Ethan, not particularly won over by the preview she saw of the latest one. She dressed, packed, checked out, and went to the best coffee place in the hospital's vicinity, picking up three coffees in various styles for herself, Layla, and Warren, as well as some baked goods.

She turned down the hallway she thought held Warren's room, then all doubt disappeared.

"You didn't read my texts," Ethan said, by way of explanation.

"I came to see Layla," Magenta said, outraged.

"She's busy checking Warren out right now. Come on, I have to talk to you."

He looked tense. Magenta rolled her eyes, but she knew she'd do what he asked.

"Let me get the coffee to her. Is she in the lobby now?"

"They both are."

"Warren looking OK this morning?"

He turned back with her, said, "Yeah, if you like that kind of thing."

The elevator doors closed around them, and Ethan took up a spot leaning against the wall so he faced her.

"You know how I said we sometimes revert around people we knew at a different time in life?"

"Yeah," she said, refusing to make eye-contact.

"I'm guilty. I did something dumb last night, because I reverted to a seventeen year old prick."

"Please don't tell me anything about your fight with your girlfriend until we are off this elevator and I have given this stuff to Layla."

He obliged by staying silent, putting his back to the elevator wall instead of turning toward her. This meant she could look at him out of the corner of her eye. He was in another suit, though this was a neutral gray with a plain white shirt. He filled it well, and she suspected it was tailored the way her band got their tour clothes done. His hair still had the same curl but his haircut was sharp--shaved close at the sides of his head, a quarter-inch length at the top shaped neatly.

She remembered the anger he'd slipped into revealing the night before, about being a person of power that had no heroic applications, what he said about compensating.

"I don't think we need to hide behind anything anymore," said Magenta. "We've done more than many people do, whether they have powers or not. And if you ever need a subject with a weirdly lame shapeshifting ability, you know who to call."

He looked at her sharply, but didn't answer. The elevator opened at their floor.

Layla was easy to find in the scatter of the clerks, after which Magenta spotted Warren sprawled only a little too stiffly on a chair close by.

"Have some coffee," Magenta said, trying to sound casual. "I'll be hanging around when you're done."

"Thanks," Ethan said to Layla, mysteriously.

Then he led Magenta to a somewhat sad landscaped area with a bench. Magenta plopped onto it and with a dramatic sigh opened her texts. "Okay, what did you have to say so late last night while you were..."

He stood just an arms-length, at attention, almost as she read:

She looked up.

"What startled you?" She felt immediately like she didn't want to know, and added, "The fact that I was wearing jeans without holes in them?"

Ethan ignored this bait, though.

"I thought I was over it. We were gonna say hi, and it would be just like messaging you through the game, where you're some ambiguous memory of a teenager, just slightly less moody. That we'd hit it off talking about Call of Sacrifice and stupid bets on speed-runs. And then it wasn't like that."

Warily, Magenta said, "I mean, we could talk about games now, if you want. I'm back in a baggy tee shirt, if the silk blouse was bothering you."

"It still is bothering me," Ethan said. Now they were looking at each other, he sat on the bench, getting intimidatingly close. "I saw you go through a moment of not recognizing me, too. Then I got mad when you asked me over, because I couldn't help remembering the last time I asked you out. Do you even remember?"

Her face got hot.

She had just broken up with Zack, and Ethan had come over to play X-Box. He'd casually said, "I'd take you out," when she'd made some bitter comment about Friday nights (as if she and Zach had done anything interesting on Friday nights), and she'd laughed.

It had taken her a few weeks to realize that there was a correlation between that and the way Ethan had slowly tapered off coming by her place, and sitting with her at lunch.

"Wow, you can hold a grudge, huh?"

"I can hold a crush, more like." He tilted his head to look at her, as if assessing. "I was embarrassed you'd ask me over just like that, when I spent two years trying to be not in love with you. I figured maybe it was an innocent invitation. Then we were in that waiting room last night, and I didn't really care, either way, but I had dug myself a hole with a fake girlfriend I had to get home to."

Magenta dropped her eyes down to her hands, unable to handle the intensity of his look. "I still leave town this afternoon," she said.

"And you go home where you can install Call of Sacrifice, finally," he said. He leaned in close, and said softly, "Where they have a voice-chat feature now."

She shivered, but when he moved toward her, she didn't draw back. This hug wasn't awkward, because if she buried her face in his collar to smell his restrained sandalwood cologne, it wasn't creepy anymore.

"You have your revenge," she finally said. "You grew up sexy, and I didn't notice over text-chat."

"Don't make me kiss you senseless in a hospital garden," he murmured, lightly brushing his lips on her temple. "When is your flight today?"

"It's not until 4:30."

He pulled back, and she stood up, finding he was holding her hand. Was reluctant to make him let go.

She didn't like this practical attitude at the moment at all, so she put her hands up to draw his face close and gently kiss him.

The small breath he puffed out when their lips stopped touching told her what she needed to know.

"Am I going to meet you at the university or at your place?"

He considered this a moment, eyeing her speculatively.

"By which I mean, are we going to talk for two hours somewhere quiet, or are we going to cuddle and shoot aliens before you take me to the airport?"

"There is zero chance you can keep me from talking anyway, so let's shoot some aliens while we're at it."

If Warren and Layla noticed them walking a little too close to each other as they rejoined them, they didn't mention it.

After depositing Warren at home, Magenta took Layla to the pharmacy to fill his prescriptions and listened to her vent about her worries about Warren, her regret at missing the reunion, and how much she liked The Wastelanders' newest album. Only once they were in the backyard garden, with Warren napping in the house, did Layla finally say, "So, Ethan, huh?"

"What about him?" Magenta asked.

Layla rolled her eyes. "You two have only been the most annoying non-couple I know for seven years now."

"I was dating Zach six years ago," Magenta protested.

"So?" Layla said. "Even Ethan, the completely clueless, knew that wasn't going to last."

"Poor Zack might be the only one who didn't," sighed Magenta. "I had no idea about Ethan, though. I mean, about him now. I literally didn't recognize him for a second."

"Yeah," Layla got a cat-like grin on her face. "He's been getting finer and finer. Someone really needs to stop him."

"Back off, you already have a boyfriend," said Magenta, amiably.

"Oh, Warr is way sexier than Ethan. But he's never going to be suave like him."

"He was really good with you last night," said Magenta, "I was surprised. Where did he get social skills? I still haven't found any."

Layla laughed. "So what's next?"

"We're meeting up this afternoon." Magenta's attempt at casual was almost as transparent as Layla's skin.

"Is it going to be hot and heavy, do you think?" Layla was blushing slightly, though that didn't mean much. The hibiscus behind her also seemed to bloom a little more furiously, though that could have just been because Layla was there. "Or are you going to take it slow?"

"I honestly can't say," Magenta answered. "We left it kind of open. The theory is some video games and some necking. It's very weird, but also a relief."

Layla nodded sagely. She glanced at the house and said, "By the time Warren and I worked it out we had a lot of tension built up. But we hadn't been long distance, either."

After a thoughtful pause, she asked, "Why not delay your flight?"

"Because then I'd have to go visit my mother. And while visiting her with a boyfriend finally would thrill her, especially since he's genetically a super, I probably want to be more sure of the whole thing before I give her that string to clutch."

"I heard she did a job despite her retirement recently. Did she talk to you about it?"

"Not as much as Will Stronghold's Facebook page did," Magenta said drily. "Is he who you heard about it from?"

"No, I don't follow him on Facebook," said Layla, quite seriously. "My mom was telling me about it. She occasionally has a desire for a last fling. But I'm not surprised Will was starstruck."
