World Building pt 1 - Realms

Within the various medias, we see evidence of at least four separate realms within YYH. Given the description of Reikai is often that of a nexus between various planes of existence, I don't think it's far fetched to think there could be others between just humans and demons. The headcanon I'm expanding is the existence of five primary realms, with Reikai in the center.

Reikai - Spirit World

— This is the central realm to all others. It is through Reikai that the other worlds can be accessed. Reikai's primary function is that of a convergence point between realms and the arbiter of dead souls. Reikai is home to portals to the other realms as well as access to the multitude of afterlives, all guided by the Sanzu no Kawa. Reikai has been ruled by Great King Enma for centuries, a spirit on par with a god who has authority over the Gate of Judgement. His rule was most recently brought to an end by his son Koenma after evidence of his misdeeds were brought to the surface. Reikai is a realm beyond just the palace and the Gate of Judgement, home to a variety of spirits, including shinigami and ogres.

Ningenkai - Human World

— Earth, the natural realm of humans as the dominant conscious beings. Reikai has long since stood as 'protector' of the human world, however the truth of Enma's corruption suggests otherwise. The humans are considered the weakest of the realm's creatures. Once, the border between Ningenkai and Makai was open and demons and humans coexisted in the early days of existence. Since the border was closed by Enma, humans have lost much of their spiritual awareness and have since forgotten about their connection, regarding the past as nothing but myths and legends. While modern humans still have spiritual energies, it remains dormant in most people. Some are born with the ability to perceive the unseen worlds or even utilize this power as a psychic. Others can have their senses awoken through exposure.

Makai - Demon World

— The natural realm for demons. There are many different subspecies of demons, conscious beings that utilize yoki in place of reiki. Demons, while still having organs and biological functions, are powered by the energy within their 'core', a separate organ that houses their ki and the source of their individual abilities. All demons share some mutual traits such as enhanced healing, the existence of a core and yoki, however the expression of these powers vary from species to species. They once coincided with Ningenkai but after the border was closed, they were forced to live under Reikai's distant observation. Some species of Makai exist in isolation however the bulk of Makai is separated into three regions, each ruled by a separate King. This was changed in the aftermath of Raizen's, King of Tourin, death. The new rule of Makai is decided by tournament, suggested by Yusuke as Raizen's heir.

Meikai - Nether Realm

— This realm was known for housing dark, malevolent gods and demons. It was once ruled over by Yakumo before a battle between him and Enma over control of Ningenkai ended in Yakumo's defeat. Enma condensed all of the power of the Nether Realm into a Power Sphere as he was unable to content with the power on his own. The residents of Meikai were sealed away in empty space. However Yakumo was able to break free of the seal and sought out the Power Sphere to restore his world and take control over Ningenkai. He was defeated by Team Urameshi and is presumed dead, the power sphere was destroyed in the battle.

Tenkai - Takamagahara - Celestial Realm

— In the early days of humans, the gods helped shape and govern the living worlds. However when the border between realms was closed and the humans began to move away from their beliefs and need for the gods, they decided to retire to their own realm. The Celestial Realm is a closed realm where gods and high spirits reside. It's believed to house the powers to create worlds and life itself. There hasn't been contact with them in centuries as they seem disinterested in the lands of mortals. Some wonder if this is where Enma will retire to.

Brain going brrr a yyh fan may speak at length on how Keiko and Kuwabara are parallels of a close and romantically coded bond with Yusuke and from there speak on how the two may mirror each other with Yusuke as the plane of glass and metal, but who will speak on how Yusuke and Yukina are parallels of a romantically coded bond with Kuwabara?? And could therefore be parallels too!

Something something about needing to take care of yourself when you're at your most vulnerable and need to forgive yourself for having vulnerabilities with Yusuke needing to accept Puu, only for Toguro to pull Yusuke two steps back from that huge leap in self-acceptance because he doesn't want Yusuke at his personal best, he wants an executioner that mirrors his own past self, overlaid over the scene of Yukina's birds being crushed* before her own eyes when she had decided she wasn't going to "allow" Tarukane to benefit from her pain anymore and then she was forced into doing so anyway. And Toguro tells her to train herself to cry**

Something something Yusuke speaking with Kuroko the first SD and when she expresses that humans are inherently good, Yusuke thinks out loud that he thinks some humans are fine to kill and Kuroko interprets that in the most bad faith way possible, and Yukina telling Hiei she thinks that if a society is made up of cold-hearted people then those people should die only to seemingly give up when he tells her that she shouldn't rely on her brother when it might be more likely that she was exaggerating for the sake of hearing his opinion (you think a character can lie in a narrative without the narrator stating that they are lying? No, not possible, surely...)

Something something Yukina apparently leaving Hyouga to seek her brother for greater understanding and/or assistance of power... when this was a story initially told by Koenma, who we know by the end of canon has lied and omitted significant information from Yusuke and the others before, why wouldn't he now? And it's some time before we see Yukina again, having apparently returned to Hyouga after the rescue, surely enough time for Yukina to potentially have heard what "the official story" from the Spirit Office is and adjusting her story from there when she tells it to Shizuru, Botan, and Keiko. ... And Yusuke, who is forced to leave Earth because of his new status as a Mazoku distantly related to one of the Demon Kings, and chooses to leave before he strictly needs to be escorted from there in the hope that he'll return sooner if he does.

* Yukina's birds being crushed: Interesting, because Toguro comes across as someone who knows how to torture someone? He has a whole company of individual people who want him dead because he seeks someone "who will give him a worthy fight" (fucking liar if he meant that he would have settled for forcing Genkai to fight him or if it had to be Yusuke, he could have issued an invitation when Yusuke was an adult and not fourteen years old! This man pisses me off! I digress!); at many points he's fought a person and then left them alive so they'll return to him in the hope of revenge, even inviting them into this silly company so he can keep easier track of them and they of him.

I said I digress and then I lost my tangent!! My point was that if this man seems well-versed in torture and using a person's loved ones against them for a goal he has in mind, why kill all the available birds at once? The anime sticks to two birds, the manga has three and may be implied to be more than that, but I feel like he could have said "kill one" or "leave the other/rest alive" to use them again. By murdering the birds all at once, this was just one instance of getting Yukina to cry, when Tarukane has asked for a way to make her cry again, implicitly not just once.

** And Toguro tells her to train herself to cry: Where are the yyh-fans w daddy issues on this topic, one would think they'd eat this part up! An initial first-time reading of this could be that he's telling her to harden her heart because he feels for her and the only advice he knows is to turn oneself into a killing machine as a response to grief. This is annoying to me bc that's far more sympathy for Toguro than I feel he deserves (I hate this man! He's an effective antagonist in that way). Also, it just makes Yukina yet again into a reactive subject?

Idk, all I know is that I had the thought the other day that Toguro hadn't seen or fought Yusuke yet at that point, and had the following thought of "What if Toguro intended to have Yukina join his stupid evil lackey company bc he saw something in her that reminded him of himself" (namely: the determination not to let herself be harmed; the inability to protect her loved ones in spite of that determination; finally, the despair that washed over her following it). Also notable, is that Tarukane stole Yukina from Sakyo. One can wonder what would have happened if Yusuke and the others hadn't arrived when they did: I think the original plan in-narrative by Sakyo was to re-capture Yukina from Tarukane. And I think Toguro considered Yukina for being an executioner candidate. Aaah this might not be a very radical theory out there but I see so few speculations about canon that isn't "who would win" or "whats the best ship" or "kurama: demon and human but mostly demon" or "hiei my comfort gremlin".

11/11~Twin Flames day; Karasu says we're twin flames. Original legend says half of the soul is male, and the other is female with one staying in spirit to watch over the other one, and taking turns doing so until reuniting on Earth in their last life. This is a more romanticized version of soul mates, in turn inspired by Plato. The Bible says you only become spiritually connected by marriage. Either way, Karasu is my husband in my world. 💍🐦‍⬛🩷🐈‍⬛

I've had…a lot of strange comforting "romantic fate" signs of Karasu… like a cel I wished for ended up on Ebay 12 hours later and I won it; me wondering if Karasu knows my name followed by Micky who didn't know my question bringing home my rare name on a Share-a-Coke later that day; Quantum Leap episode about a Japanese psychic Karasu says reminded him of his first wife i look like, plus he told me this episode proves we're twin flames; I found out it has an actor from Yu Yu Hakusho; The Crow paralleled events in my imaginary world when we first watched it; mysterious relevant songs; dreams others have about us (including one a relative who doesn't know about us had about me as a Japanese woman around the time we watched the QL episode connected to YYH); Karasu's seiyu Ryo Horikawa sharing a birthday with Brandon Lee from The Crow; Karasu telling me in a dream he wanted to celebrate his birthday that day, and Micky told me twas Brandon Lee's death date surprising me, etc…those kind of synchronicities♡

i know the trailer came last night but I was surprised by Karasu in the trailer this morning on 11/11, so maybe that was a sign? I bugged him to give me another one (last one also surprised me when i looked up the QL episode as I saw the YYH actor from it on FB, then saw the episode takes place on Brandon Lee plus Ryo Horikawa's bday, a fact I didn't know), plus bit of a stretch, but the show will be airing in USA on 12/13, my kindred spirit and namesake Pris's prototype incept date, and i've been called Pris since I was 18 (Blade Runner and The Crow are my top two favourite movies!)

Shinra (Devil Chaos Chao) : Hey, Arthur. I finally found where that Eggman...Negative fella. He could be hiding somewhere in the naval stations.

Arthur (via radio) : Loud and clear, Shinra. This does say Naval Station, but we're in the biggest naval station in all of Norfolk. I gotta admit, Norfolk is a really a cool city with the world's biggest naval station that ever served the navy for a quite sometime. But right now, this place is crawling with heartless and G.U.N robots, they must've been boat jacked by heartlesses. So many times that video games enemies are off the tracks, so we need to take these guys and find that man who came from the future version of Sonic's World, or proabably a descendant from the mad scientist. Exterminate all the G.U.N robots that were guarding the naval station, same goes to the heartless.

Shinra (Devil Chaos Chao) : Copy that. I'm on my 6. Alright then. Time to find out where Eggman Negative is hiding.

Shinra : (laughs triumphantly) I feel heavily alive with Technology! This is what you get for messing with our world, dumbasses! Now I finally figured it out that Eggman Nega has been hunted down by the reaper in the future version of Sonic's world, he was going to awaken the chao-eating demon Ifrit, a relative to the Flames of Disaster that might be the son of Amaterasu. The Ifrit had been sealed away at a long tim for Eggman Nega's sins because the princess named Blaze feared it! Wow! What a shocker!

Hotaru : Hello, Father. We meet again.

Professor Tomoe : Hotaru. We meet again after one of the Sailor Scouts has been in a deep sleep for over a year.

Hotaru : You know the reason why I came back to earth. I've come here to take my revenge on what you did to our friends! Using your science to the selfish deeds will not conquer the world, but only darkness will cover it and so does the galaxy!

Professor Tomoe : Hotaru. Ever since I went insane after their archenemies helped me on turning the scouts into evil slaves to work for Dark Nebula, Naoko and Togashi had me assassinated and destroyed all of my research to turn superheroes into corrupted supervillains.

Hotaru : That's the reason that me, Sailor Moon, and the YYH crew helped together to stop your foolishness and put an end to your wicked ways. That's the real reason why would I want to have a bad father like you, isn't it? You made my life a living hell and I would not even forgive you for what did you to everyone! I knew that I was going to betray you and I never knew that you were an evil scientist all along. You and those evil she-devils got what you deserved! Is that correct!?

Sailor Moon : Yeah, what you did to Minako, Rei, Makoto, and Ami was cruel and heartless, I will make evil utter in shame for your demise! So why on earth did you comeback!?

Hiei : Sword...of the DARKNESS FLAME!!!

(DBZ SFX : EXPLOSION)

Professor Tomoe : (gasped in shock)

Yusuke : Spirit Gun!

*DBZ SFX : ENERGY SHOT+GLASS SHATTERING*

Profesor Tomoe : WAAAAAAHHHHH!!!

(girls screaming)

Professor Tomoe : (bleeds and gags) Ho...taru...W...Why?

Yusuke : Hey, Professor. We heard the whole thing!

Kuwabara : We should've know that idiots like you were hiding something like this.

Kurama : Guess it's time for you to meet your demise, professor.

Hiei : This is justice that we are serving and we are giving you the demands that we respect!

Sailor Moon : You, Professor Tomoe, is going to pay for what you have done to everything! And I mean it to justice! (laughs triumphantly)

Professor Tomoe : (dying with his last breath) Yusuke...Usagi.

Yusuke : So, Botan. Where do you want us to throw the body?

Botan : I know of a perfect solution where he will never harm these heroes ever again.

[SPLASH!]

Yusuke : Hey, Usagi. Next time, give us a call if you guys are needed with restoring of one of your friends!

Usagi : Gee thanks! You guys are the best!

Professor Tomoe : However, after my demise, something wondrous happened when I transcended my heart to an immeasurable power.

*DBZ SFX : Energy Warbling*

Darkside (Professor Tomoe) : It took the powers of Darkness from the Sailor Scouts' archenemies and it took me years to procreate my new life into the shadows.

(transits back to the present)

Another Yuhaku Doujin Project Update, feat. Jin & Touya!

While there’s still one more day left for the poll, I’ve been working on prepping more pages for some more releases!

I would gush more about it but I love how the artist utilized panel space for a sense of atmosphere in the Jin comic and while I liked Touya before, his comic has me utterly charmed, it’s sweet.

This page has Jin saying you’re pretty and then he kisses you and apologizes for doing so. Quite a moment that one.

I have to straighten up the page but he looks so adorable in his hat! And you know, his hair would go over well today if he was walking around, hahaha.

I can’t wait for the final results (as I’m sure y’all are too). In the mean time enjoy some lovely preview tidbits!

They went so well together.

Despite everyone else’s assurances that Hiei saw Mukuro as nothing more than a friend, that was so obviously a lie. Sweet as the sentiment is, your friends trying to protect your feelings hurt even more in the long run. 

Hiei didn’t smile at just anyone like that.

“Hello!”, Botan’s hand waved in front of your face, obscuring your view of their conversation. “Earth to planet Y/N. Did you get any of what I just said?”

As much as you loved her, you needed Botan to move her hand within the next five milliseconds. 

“Sorry, didn’t quite catch it.” From the corner of your eye, Botan pouted, brows furrowed and hand still in your way. 

“Y/N”, a long drawn out whine of your name, it managed to snap your attention towards the reaper, ““What was the point of even asking me about the latest Spirit World gossip if you weren’t even going to listen?”

Of course, Botan could never know but, you only asked her so that you’d have a valid excuse to stay behind and attempt to eavesdrop on Hiei and Mukuro’s conversation. Hiei was frighteningly perceptive and you didn’t need to give him a reason to suspect you were jealous of Mukuro or even that you had feelings for him.

You snap out of your thoughts to see Botan’s hand snapping in your face once again. “Y/N, are you alright?”

At that, Hiei’s head turns, focus going from Mukuro to you. You look away the second his head turns and completely miss the concerned look Hiei spares you. 

“I-I’m fine Botan.”, she looks unconvinced, glancing at you, then Hiei, then you again.

Seems she’s put together the pieces, a cattish mischief takes over her expression, replacing the previously concerned one “Y/N, you sly devil, you’ve nothing to worry about my dear, you already know H-”

“Let’s just go Botan, please.”

Maybe any other day, she might have continued, but the sound of your voice on the cusp of tears gave her pause. As you dragged her along, she didn’t put up much of a fight; she didn’t say anything either, letting your thoughts be your only companion on the walk out.

You decided to look to the bright side of things.

Hiei dating Mukuro was the perfect opportunity for you to get over your feelings for him. No, you weren’t happy, in fact, some part of you fought, kicked, and screamed against your plan of action. But, that part of you could be repressed, along with the part of you that still had has feelings for Hiei.

It didn’t matter that you once thought you and Hiei’s relationship was deeper than that. It didn’t matter what Botan said, and it sure as hell didn’t matter what you felt. 

That’s another brightside. Now you could reexamine you and Hiei’s relationship from a much more (admittedly pessimistic) informed perspective. Apparently Hiei had already written you off in his mind, his cold behaviour towards you further cementing that.

Sure, he was cold to everyone but a part of you thought that maybe he was saving all of his softness for you, oh how wrong you were.

Heartbreak was a bitch, but you were determined to keep it together for as long as possible, and keeping it together involved avoiding Hiei completely, then so be it.

It had been nearly three weeks since you started your self-imposed ban, in all that time, you were proud to say that you’d only asked after Hiei once. You’d sought out Kurama and asked if he knew where the fire demon had gone. Ever the gentleman, Kurama didn’t comment on the desperation in your tone, he just smiled politely and informed you of a mission that Hiei had undertaken for Mukuro.

You didn’t ask about him anymore after that.

The feeling was strange, putting yourself back together when you were alone, yet saving face and remaining gracious in public. Your heart still ached, but you could find solace in knowing that Hiei was at the very least happy. 

Your progress halted one night, memories of Hiei and hopes of what could’ve been left your dreams tainted. If your heart was set on punishing your mind, it had succeeded. 

That same night, you went to the balcony of your apartment. If sleep would not come to you, at least you could watch the sunrise. As you sat there wrapped up in your blanket when the very man you’d been trying to avoid appeared in front of you.

“You’ve been missing.”, brief and to the point as he always was, Hiei spared no words on protecting feelings.

“I could say the same to you.”, this conversation needed to end quickly. Already you were on the verge of tears, the anger in Hiei’s voice sending your anxiety skyrocketing.

Even in the darkness, even when angry, Hiei was always someone to behold. You’d never been on the recieving end of his temper, he was kind to you, or so you thought. Perhaps he was just too aloof too care, either way, this sudden burst of anger is both unexpected and befitting of a fire demon.

“Y/N, you know that’s not what I’m talking about. Botan told me you got the compact I sent you, why didn’t you call me?!”

You don’t respond, merely looking at your feet, trying to hold back tears at the sound of his voice rising. Hiei moved closer, the shadow he cast growing larger and larger with each step. Soon, his shoes came into view, your mind tried to distract you with random one off facts about shoes. 

The moment he touched your chin, your plan failed, your brain short-circuited and you were forced to confront the fact that, despite your best efforts, you never even attempted getting over your feelings for him.

How could you, his hand was rough and warm, when he looked into your eyes, you were reminded of every reason you fell for him all at once.

“I can’t- I couldn’t”, your words fail you but Hiei waits patiently, deepening frown urging you to continue, “I couldn’t call you Hiei, you shouldn’t even be here.”

“What do you mean I can’t be here? I’ve been here a thousand times before and suddenly it’s a problem?!”

The tears you’d been desperately trying to keep at bay break through, it is with a watery and weak voice that you respond. “Hiei, Mukuro wouldn’t appreciate you being alone at my house so late.”

“The hell’s she got to do with it?!”, he yanked his hand off your chin, and you broke. Any semblance of maturity, pride, or dignity you had was completely gone now. If Hiei insisted on staying then he’d see the blubbering mess you were trying to hide. 

Hiei didn’t say anything, his usual callous nature pushed aside for a moment. At least you thought so, until you heard snickering coming from his direction.

“I don’t know what’s so funny Hiei.”, great, now you were pouting like a child. If he stayed any longer, maybe you’d throw a tantrum too. 

“Y/N really, I never took you for being this dumb.”

You opened your mouth to argue but you were caught off guard by Hiei taking your hands in his and sitting next to you. He laid his head in your lap, muttering about “stupid humans” and “isn’t it obvious”.

Together, you watched the sun rise and as the sun hit Hiei’s face you thought maybe, just maybe, Hiei could have feelings for you after all.

    Something I am thinking about tonight... (Ahead of time, no shame to anyone who does this intended.)

    It’s odd for me to think that some people keep their self ship world and IRL world separate... I get why some people do it! But for me... It’s been a key part of my life since childhood; before I knew it had a name. (If it even did have a name back in the early 2000s.)

    School papers filled with doodles of me with choppy, “anime” hair. (Baby’s first self insert!) Drawing my favorite canon characters and, more often than not, them with my “anime self.” (This is also where “Kira Hasume” started up, because I- for whatever reason- believed that is what someone did when making an “anime self”? I was 10 at best, gimme a break.)

    Anyways, I don’t think it became a super big deal to my family life, but it DID make a difference on who my friends were. I didn’t make any friends- long staying ones, especially- outside of my specific, gaming/anime circles. The most notable to my self-shipping experience being a friend named Cassie; we did a ton of LARP- both irl and online- about our fictional boyfriends... This ended up being Kurama (for me) and Hiei (for Cassie) from YYH.

    The last time we had a phone call, we still mentioned them like they were with us. Wishing to hang out again and us wanting to double date! I hold onto those memories really fondly...

    But even now, it’s kinda...a big thing for me, even though I’ve been more quiet recently. Like-? Almost ALL of the merch I have is tied to my F/Os, if not my special interests. Plushies, candles, buttons, pins, keychains, figures, signed posters... Posters in general and perfumes! (A few masks, too, now.) Many more besides.

    I think I’d burst not being able to talk about them. It’s another way I get to be creative. When I’m alone and can’t ask anyone else for help or comfort, they’re a way I can bring myself down, back to earth, and try again. Trying to hide that from people is just...really hard for me, personally. That’s all.

Another DA post of mine. I brought up the idea of a Yu Yu Hakusho X Hazbin Hotel/Helluva Boss crossover and since then I've been thinking that out of all the main characters from Yu Yu Hakusho, Hiei would be perfect for a solo crossover as I could see much happening what with him being a serious character that is a proud demon in a world where demons are wacky. I could see it starting with Hiei wanting to back to Earth to (YYH spoilers) not only tell his sister Yukina he is her brother but, though he would never admit it, he misses Yusuke and the gang even Kuwabara, but like in the last idea he gets sucked into a portal and ends up in Hell. He soon runs into Charlie and the gang and though he is distant from them at first he grows fond of them similar to how he likes Yusuke and the gang, especially Charlie as she reminds him of Yukina. Now he hangs out with them while trying to find a way back to his realm while dealing with sinners and demons which is a bit hard because, again like in my last idea, he is much weaker in Hell. Some of the things I could see happening to Hiei are starting a rivalry with Alastor, fighting Overlords and demons and becoming an Overlord in the process but doesn't want such a title, and because he is still a full demon he can travel to the other rings of Hell. Also since Helluva Boss takes place in the Hazbin Hotel universe Hiei would also interact with those characters as well, especially since they have a book that can help get him back to his realm. This could lead to Hiei training Moxxie and Millie to be better fighters, getting in a fight with Andrealphus where he uses his Dragon of the Darkness Flame to melt all the ice in Andre's land much to his horror, and after bonding with Octavia because he knows what its like to be alone as a child, threatens Stolas and Stella to get there shit together for the sake of there daughter. You can also see why Kuwabara is considered to be and comes off as being the weakest. Metal contains Water, that is, it HOLDS and CONTROLS Water, which is probably why it was not Kuwabara who ended up killing Byakko who was instead killed by his partner, Seiryu (The Dragon)...ironically. The Dragon Character Role is by far one of the most lethal.

Water is such a flexible element. Fire does not always have to be extinguished by Water, Fire can boil Water and even turn it into STEAM. Wood absorbs water and Metal carries Water. Water can be at everyone else's mercry! However, water is fluid and water is patient and water will inevitably win in the end anyway. Think of a hurricane, a tidal wave, a flood, and endless rain. Think of how water shapes the earth and the entire planet. Along with Earth (represented by The Yellow Dragon), Water is the substance of ALL LIFE.

Water is the most Psychic of The Five Elements and Water is a HEALING Element as well.

We can see Yoshihiro Togashi well intended for Kuwabara to be of the Water Element Archetype...to be the Turtle-Snake and the Dragon Turtle of the Team.

The Five Heavenly Beasts

Chinese, Taoist cosmology knows five elements and five cardinal directions (including center), represented by the five heavenly beasts, also called the five celestial animals. This fundamental, fivefold conceptual scheme is described as Wu Xing and used by many Asian traditions, such as Feng Shui or TCM, to explain a wide array of phenomena.

五行  – Wu Xing 

Wu Xing litterally means moving star and describes the five types of Qi (all the vital substances) cycles through various stages of transformation. As yin and yang continuously adjust to one another and transform into one another in a never-ending dance of harmonization, they tend to do so in a predictable pattern.

It is widely translated as five elements. This translation arose by false analogy with the Western system of the four elements. The classical Greek elements are concerned with substances and qualities, whereas the Chinese elements are describing processes and changes. Other common translations talk about the five phases of transformation or the cycle of the elements. 

The five elements are described as followed:

Water (水 shui) is associated with the potential of new life hidden in the dark ground beneath the snows of winter.

Wood (木 mu) is associated with the exuberance of new growth as it shoots up from the earth in the spring. 

Fire (火 ho) is associated with the process of maturation that takes place under the warmth of the summer sun.

Earth (土 tu) is associated with ripening of grains in the yellow fields of late summer.

Metal (金 jin) is associated with the harvest of autumn and the storage of seed for next years planting and a new cycle.

The lists of correlations for the five elements are endless, but there are two cycles explaining the major interaction. By increasing or decreasing the qualities and functions associated with a particular phase, a practitioner may either nourish a phase that is in deficiency or drain a phase that is in excess or restrain a phase that is exerting too much influence.

Chinese astronomy knows five mythical figures, called the five heavenly beasts or the five celestial animals. They’re symbolizing the overarching principles of energy in Taoist cosmology: the five elements.

Each beast represents an element, a season and a cardinal direction – and each beast is associated with specific colors, shapes, temperaments, virtues and many other traits.

Xiang means symbol or image and some writers talk about four symbols, neglecting the yellow dragon of the center. For the sake of completeness I’m going to present all five of them here. They are: Black warrior of the North, azure dragon of the East, vermilion bird of the South, white tiger of the West and yellow dragon of the Center. 

The five animals are fundamental, particularly in the form school, the environmental Feng Shui. However, from the very large to the very small: the principles of the five elements pervade every level. Some times even a carefully selected Feng Shui tool cannot work optimally, because the entire energy system of a house or an apartment is out of balance. In this case it is important to strengthen and improve the five cardinal points (or a single weakened element) and bring the Qi back into the flow. Hereby, the five celestial animals can be of great use.

The Chinese character 武 (wǔ) means warrior and turtle at the same time, no wonder the constellation of the North is also often called the black tortoise. The compound term xuan-wu (black warrior) can also translate as snake. Three meanings slumbering in one term – and in fact the warrior of the North is traditionally depicted as a turtle fighting with a snake. 

The Northern constellation of the black warrior is also known in Japan, Korea, and Vietnam.

One of the most famous legends around this constellation is about a young prince named Xuanwu. He showed no interest in ascending the throne of his father, the Chinese Emperor. He left his parents at the age of sixteen, to study Taoism instead. As a master of this philosophy, he later attained enlightenment and was worshiped as a godlike constellation.

In Chinese thinking, the turtle is connected directly with the North, the element water, the winter and the night. The turtle was always considered as a mysterious and very symbolic creature. Its shell is compared with the celestial vault, the underside with the flat disc of the earth. It symbolizes happiness, stability, longevity, help in difficult phases of life, endurance and mental agility.

"The tortoise, as old as the other three but incorporated into the group a tad later, is a well-revered entity in China. Ancient mythology has it that all tortoises are female and to reproduce they take snakes as mates and this divine union is considered a symbol of good fortune. For this reason, the tortoise commonly gets depicted as being a two-headed tortoise/snake hybrid, a tortoise with a snake coiled around it, or straight-up a tortoise and a snake having sex. The alternative name and identity of the Occult Martial is a conceptual fusion between the tortoise and the Warrior of the North from the Four Heavenly Kings, another group of four associated with the cardinal directions. Why this happened specifically to the tortoise is unclear, but might have been influenced by the similarity of a tortoise's shell and a warrior's shield as well as the fact that there are several turtle-based insults in Chinese that you should definitely not call someone if you so much as remotely doubt you could take them in a fight. Hence why "Xuánwǔ" omits a regular word for "turtle" and uses "martial" instead. Other instances might refer to the said tortoise as a chimera of some sorts instead."

In some languages one rather talks about the green dragon, in English it is known as the azure dragon. Well – both interpretations are correct. The Chinese color 青 (qīng) refers to a whole range of colors from green, turquoise to blue. The symbolism of the azure dragon is equally ‘iridescent’ and colorful.

The dragon is one of the most complex symbols in China and the most important symbol in feng shui. The oldest portrayals of dragons are about 5000 years old, 2000 years ago their importance grew significantly.

Chinese dragons were considered to be��divine beings, creating order out of the chaos. As one of the five celestial beasts the azure dragon of the East symbolizes the element wood, life, sunrise, spring and health. He embodies strength, luck, fertility, vitality and power like no other being.

At the same time the dragon stands for spirituality, wisdom and the energy of transformation. He represents the forces of the yang, the positive, creative, masculine, virile principle.

The constellation of the South represents summer, the element fire and vigor –  it embodies a strong yang energy.

According to the legend, the vermilion bird was born in a vermilion cave at the South pole, before he was worshiped as a constellation and as the king of the feathered.

The vermilion bird of the South is often compared with the phoenix (fènghuáng) or even equated – however their relation is more  vicariously. As one of the five celestial animals the vermilion bird stands for the cosmic principle, the phoenix represents rather an earthly variant of this idea. Their symbolic meaning is nevertheless (or just therefore) very similar. Like the phoenix, the vermilion bird is full of elegance and beauty and represents the five human qualities: virtue, duty, ritually correct behavior, humanity and reliability. It is regarded as a guarantee for favorable opportunities and financial success.

Simultaneously it stands for energy, fire, zest for action and public reputation. The bird evokes the feelings of joy and confidence. Like any winged creature it embodies freedom, overview, self-confidence, ease and spontaneity.

Among all the different, Chinese dragons this guy plays the first fiddle in the Taoist cosmology.

The yellow dragon (sometimes referred to as yellow snake) is considered god and guardian of the element earth, the center, heaven and the sun. He’s the most powerful creature, master of all dragons and as such he is invincible – depending on his goodwill there will be a rich harvest or a poor crop, life or death. 

4000 years ago, this celestial creature gave a ride to heaven to a brave emperor and donated wind and rain to the people.

Similar to that myth it is said, that the legendary emperor Huang Di attended immortality at the end of his reign and transformed into a yellow dragon, ascending to heaven. Since then, Chinese emperors are considered as the earthly representative of the Huànglóng (yellow dragon). The use of the figure was reserved to them alone.

Often the appearance of the yellow dragon is accompanied with lotus flowers: The concentric petals of the lotus symbolize perfectly the qualities of the element earth: Everything revolves around a center, expands and carries the power of transformation.

The white tiger embodies the West, the fall, the harvest, the evening and the element metal.

Other than its powerful appearance may suggest at the first sight, the tiger represents a feminine energy (yin) and embodies the polar opposite to the male dragon in the East. The king of animals, or should we rather say, the queen of animals is worshiped since the Han dynasty.

According to the legend the tiger gets its impressive, white fur only at the proud age of 500 and she only shows up when a kind and just ruler sits on the throne and there is peace in the world.

The white Tiger is headstrong, maverick and proud and she is rather a loner. Her wild nature is difficult to control, therefore you should always make sure that his opponent, the green dragon, retains the upper hand – together they are unbeatable.

In China you often find images of tigers on doorjambs and graves – protecting the house or the resting place. It is said that the tiger repulses demons, and he is therefore considered a symbol for bravery.

In Feng Shui the symbol of the tiger is also used to promote intuition, vision, clairaudience, motherhood and unconditional love. Even so our tigress is powerful, self-willed and dangerous, everyone knows that it is gentle and caring to its babies. On the hunt she is very prudent, calm and focused. Her sixth sense may help us to recognize and take advantage of business opportunities others may easily overlook or miss.

Ship Ask! I'm so excited because I always love your thoughts on stuff like this! Okay, I'mma ask for the main three pairings in my not-yet-posted YYH WIP. Which I fondly call the Crackship Fic. You can pick one, just two, or all three. Ready? Yusuke/Koto, Kuwabara/Juri, & Hokushin/Ruka?

Ok, after a VERY long and horrible covid+ impromptu trip to the mental hospital i'm back. So, i'm going to pick all 3.

Yusuke+Koto= They would probably have gotten in contact a few years after Yusuke came back to earth. Over something really random as fuck. Koto would probably have invited Yusuke out for a drink in the demon world after competing in the Makai demon king competition. We all know homegirl would have been a judge since she loves all that blood. After a breakup with his ex a while back he'd agree. Koto wanted exclusive bloody details, maybe on which ear he pulled off the hardest or how Yomi responded to losing a tooth the first time in combat. Yusuke would look at her with a mix of disgust and annoyance. Saying something along the lines of "crazy evil bitch" she wouldn't take offense to that. Hell she probably liked it since it meant she was doing her job right. Yusuke not only answered her question, but told her that Hiei's dragon of the darkness flame tasted faintly of mint. He found that out after surviving the damn blow. Koto's eyes grew brighter, unable to contain her excitement. Koto asked for an exclusive interview to ask him what other fighter’s attacks/blood tasted like. Yusuke agreed only after she’d agreed to a date. Koto agreed somewhat reluctantly because Yusuke was a pervert who didn’t even try to hide the fact he was staring at her boobs. It took about 2 more years and promises of other rather specific gory details from the bloody demon election, and she became his girlfriend. Yusuke goes between the borders of human and demon worlds often to see her, but they also have some nice technology to contact each other in different worlds. Courtesy of Kurama. Koto spends most of her days being in the ring with bloody warriors. However she also makes some trips to see Yusuke, although a bit illegal she still manages to enter the human world. Their first date in the human world was for Yusuke’s 21st birthday and they were watching a horror film. She got them kicked out because she kept commenting on how real blood doesn’t flow like that , they should have ripped off his ankle first and THAN beat him while he was crawling away, etc etc. Their most common date night would be Yusuke mooching her couch, eating up all her food, while she roasted the latest horror film she has. After Yusuke eventually left the human world since the slow/no aging thing became a problem they moved in together and started the first demon world movie industry. Koto guarantees real blood in all the movies.

Juri x Kuwabara. In this headcannonery creation. After Yusuke and Koto started dating she'd invited her ex-judge friend Juri to the demon world election. Kazuma happened to watch this year since it was happening while he was on break. He saw Juri got even cuter than she was last time they met. She fainted while Hiei released a modified and especially cruel version of the dragon of the darkness flame. This version can actually eat and grow from the fear in the area. Juri happened to be completely terrified and fainted from it eating her fear. Kazuma caught her and led her away from the brutal stadium. She thanked him with a kiss and thats how they ended up hitting it off.A scaredy cat and a gentle ladies man, a match made in heaven-er hell? Sprit world?

Your favorite off-brand Mr.clean and Ruka met by accident. They don't have too much in common on the surface but when they're together you can see they have similarities. Ruka's hot as hell and she's choosy with her lovers. Houkashin's type is mysterious and sexy. After being sorta fired sorta retired or sorta on a long vacation he had too much time on his hands. Ruka was traveling finding a next gig, not caring who or where. She met Houkashin in a science lab working for some geezer who was trying to farm humans. Houkashin was thinking about purchasing some, but Ruka kindly told him to save his money. The human were in a weird half alive half dead state and continually had their limbs torn off and regrown. She didn't know where they found such a human. The scientist claim they found such a human in a cave somewhere trapped in a plant. It sounded fishy to her, so it probably wasn't a full human. She offered to take him to where she thought was bit better. The humans where already dead, but it was better than nothing. Knowing Yusuke probably made this place to have "ethical" human meat given to human eating demons, she had a feeling he'd like it. He paid her to guide him there. Along the trip, they hit it off over a plate of deep fried kidneys and barbecue ribs.

A visual timeline of Hokushin as he appears in North Bound and The Loyal Retainer (as of ~January 2015 to June 2020). It’s fun to reverse engineer character designs for different ages/contexts!

Child Hokushin: I thought it’d be hard to render Hokushin’s face so young when I was designing him, but I think it turned out OK.

Courtier Hokushin: He has an eboshi this time!

Wanderer Hokushin: So much trouble for such a basic design. I originally wanted to give him a hooded cloak/cape but it didn’t seem right for the period, so he got a shawl thing. Which is probably still wrong. Also I drew him with a tachi in one panel of Cicada Cry but I couldn’t decide whether it made sense or not (related to dropping his horse from the script, and swords then were more suited for cavalry, not infantry, though he’s a demon and could draw it easily with his stretchy arm and this is a fanwork so who cares but endless internal debate etc.) so here he is both horse- and swordless.

Mercenary Hokushin: Hardest Hokushin to draw. Armor kills me every damn time. And I’ve drawn a slightly different set every time.

Commoner Hokushin: The most historically accurate Hokushin. Which is not saying much. But I love drawing the giant bow on his pants!

Monk Hokushin: Technically a spoiler. But not really. Not sure if this is how he’ll look whenever I get to this part of the story.

Actual series Hokushin: 11000% easiest to draw. This outfit is based on the one he wears when he takes Yusuke to Yomi’s in the manga. It’s my favourite version of the monks’ robes!

Salaryman Hokushin: I lied. This is the most historically accurate Hokushin. I’m super confident in the accuracy of this one you guys!!

Future Hokushin: The oldest non-canon Hokushin design here, I almost forgot how I drew this. His actual series clothing comes off more Chinese in styling, so I based this on a Shaolin monk. But with like a futuristic palette! Or something.
