prompt: superior/subordinate pairings
These days, Yukiko is always using Diarahan.
It’s an SP sink, to be sure, but worth it. Every time Yu so much as glances her way, she’s ready. The scrape on his cheek, the fracture in his ankle — it all vanishes in the blink of an eye.
His gaze lingers on her a moment longer, enough to convey his thanks. But then, it’s gone again.
He’s their leader, she reminds herself. She should be glad he isn’t looking at her, that he’s focused on what they came here to do. Always forward, never back.
It doesn’t stop her from wanting.

Famicom Mukashi Banashi: Yuyuki (1989) ふぁみこんむかし話 遊遊記
Date: October 14, 1989
Platform: Famicom Disk System
Developer: Nintendo EAD / Pax Softnica
Publisher: Nintendo
Genre: Text Adventure
Theme: Comedy
Franchises: Famicom Mukashi Banashi
Aliases: Famicom Mukashi Banashi: Yuuyuuki / Famicom Mukashi Banashi: Yuyuki - Zenpen / Famicom Mukashi Banashi: Yuyuki - Kouhen
Type: Retelling
Summary:
A text adventure from Nintendo and Pax Softnica that retells the classic tale Journey to the West.
Famicom Mukashi Banashi: Yuuyuuki ("Famicom Fairy Tales: Yuuyuuki") is the second of two text adventure games in the Famicom Mukashi Banashi series developed by Pax Softnica and Nintendo themselves for the Famicom Disk System peripheral. It shares many similarities with its predecessor Shin Onigashima: Both games required two disks that were released separately, both feature an innovative "main character switch" feature that allows the player to switch from two playable characters and both are based on ancient Far Eastern literature. In Yuuyuuki's case the literature in question is the ancient Chinese novel Journey to the West.
The player controls Goku (Sun Wukong) and Chao (an original character) who are travelling separate journeys to meet up with each other. True to the novel, Goku is also accompanying the monk Sanzo (Sanzang) and his other followers Hakkai (Bajie) and Gojo (Wujing), though these three characters have been comedically reimagined as lazy and greedy.
Yuuyuuki would be the penultimate game developed by Nintendo for the Famicom Disk System. It was also the last game for the peripheral to receive any sort of TV advertising. While Shin Onigashima has been rereleased on more recent Nintendo platforms, such as the Game Boy Advance, Yuuyuuki remains exclusive to the Famicom Disk System.

Love how Chao doesn't even have an angry expression on her face. Like, she looks so innocent and child-like while she's doing this. 😂

Hey Dess! Are you officially back? I came up with a list of weird questions while you were out to meditate on while you rest your eyes! Some rotisserie chicken to go, if you will. First question: What are your opinions of Lololo and Lalala? Do you think they have any relation to Lolo and Lala from HAL's Eggerland series? Their offspring, alternate universe counterparts, reincarnations, whatever that thing in the anime was, etc.? Rest well dude 😘
In a matter of speaking! (Dess says, weeks later.) And weird questions are totally acceptable, as long as they're more like this! Cause it's a pleasant surprise to be asked about Lololo and Lalala!
Gosh, did you know, the first HAL game I ever played was "Adventures of Lolo" on the NES! I...couldn't beat it. I was too young to work out the puzzles. I loved how waddle-y Lolo was!!
(waddle...dee?)
So, for those not in the know, in Lolo's own series, he's... well...
:looks up the Eggerland series, since Dess had only played "Adventures of Lolo":
...Uh, wow, there were a couple of these, weren't there?! Huh, Lolo was a musician? And Lala was a dancer?! (Reminds me of my Marx and Magolor hcs... Oh no! Perfomance couple, my love...!)
Anyway, Lolo has a love interest named Lala who he rescues and marries and he becomes King Lolo and the two eventually have a kid named Lulu who is just like them but yellow!
In the anime, there are similar looking characters named Fololo and Falalala (although the "fo" was added to the English dub for.... uh, I have no idea why! ^^) who are, ahem... :checks cue cards: ...two halves of the same Nightmare Enterprises monster that were split in two as part of a money-making scheme and to hide from King Dedede that they were a super weak monster. They were somehow kicked out and taken in by the good guys after that?
(Did I get it right?)
As for Lololo and Lalala in game... ARE they from Eggerland?
I guess "from Eggerland" depends. To me, they've left their mark as 100% "official" Kirby characters. HAL Labs has included a number of cameo characters before, most notably in Dream Land 3 which not only had Chao from Yuyuki appearing in DL2 (who was turned into the "girl" Gooey in the English version) but bounty hunter Samus Aran!
For those who have any faith in the accuracy of the Kirby Encyclopedia, I want to note that Chao, Samus, and the others were noted to NOT be "true" Kirby characters. (Sorry, Escargoon fans, as the same was said of him and his appearance in Mass Attack...)
But not Lololo and Lalala! They seem to be their own characters, as distinct from their anime selves as anime Dedede, anime Meta Knight, and anime Kirby are from THEIR game selves.
(Which is probably good because that is seriously a weird origin story! There's something to be said about the delightfully gender-bending and even genderfluid-positive (!) idea that there is a fully capable masc and femme side to every person, able to live on independently - although HOW independent is arguable because Fololo and Falala never seem to want to be apart - but the fact that tacking a bow onto the girl side was the only way they could depict this was a little cheesy. I know, I know. Kid's comedy show ^^)
Another thing is that, apparently (?) before their origin as a single being is known, they are treated as siblings in the anime? (And yet, their episode is called "The Melody of Love." That's not...uh...)
While at some point (fandom wiki says in the promotional flyer for Twinkle Popo) they were called "a married couple!" I think I personally tended to see them as "together" rather than siblings and I can only assume that impression came from Adventures of Lolo since there was no way I could have seen the Twinkle Popo flyer.
That said, they're NOT the same Lolo and Lala (to me) because they're not cameo characters. And the names... Lolo and Lala's kid was Lulu but it's not weird for the next generation (or several generations down) to be named after grandparents or other family members back in the tree. But for them to both be named after one lends credence to "maybe they're siblings after all?"
....I think I just think of them as "Lololo and Lalala." I'm probably not going to ever draw ship art of them, so does it matter how they're related? To me, they're just together. From my first days with Kirby's Dream Land, once I got over the initial pleasant surprise of "Oh my gosh, It's Lolo and Lala from Adventures of Lolo!!" (Tiny Dess, they are LoloLO and LalaLA. Get it right!) they quickly grew to be like any resident of Dream Land to me! A familiar, comforting presence!
Well, okay, the whole "Castle Lolo" thing makes me see them as Dream Land / Popstarian nobility of a sort! Maybe not on the level of royalty, like his hammer-wielding majesty, although they DID side with him in the initial food-stealing incident! (They weren't chosen to protect a piece of the Star Rod, which is very interesting. Maybe the anime was onto something with them being "too weak?")
Either way, I'd say they're pretty laid back nobles, letting everyone use their castle for fights! Maybe it's one of those things where they open it up every now and then for parties and games?!
In short, while I have no answers, I like them well enough and I'm always happy to see a reappearance of them! And maybe next time they appear, HAL will let us know whether they're a pair or pairing!
(Although this is the same studio responsible for keeping the Ado / Adeleine debate going so probably not! ^_- )

KDL3 Stage 1-4, Chao and Goku's stage!
In this level, my working explanation for the story is that it's been sorta... overtaken... by Boboo, who is looking for more fuel to create more Bobos and become more powerful. As it so happens, Goku is incredibly strong and high in energy, making him a great source of fuel... so Boboo wants to hunt him down. Terrified, Goku flees into 1-4's caves! Chao gets worried, and sends Kirby to find him. Kirby defeats Boboo, allows Gooey to use their Burning ability, and they make it safely back to Chao.
I have somewhat returned to traditional media. Apologies for posting this late... it's actually for the same reason as the style change! I went on vacation right after Christmas! I also realized the Ohuhu markers I got as a present were WAY nicer to use than colored pencil n didn't hurt as much so um. fuck that noise im only using colored cpencils for the bgs now. or when i need them. idk.
Did you know Chuchu can climb ceilings? Because of her suction cups I suppose. It's very fickle in the game I think, but I suppose it's one of her abilities I do consistently find myself entertained by??? it's so quirky and cute lol.
Goku is a deity, though probably a young one judging by his design?? I dunno, I didn't play Yuyuki since it's famicom exclusive. He's clearly based on Sun Wukong from Journey to the West! Chao on the other hand, is a completely normal human girl. She's specifically stated to be Chinese, so she's from Earth and could either be visiting Popstar, or perhaps moved there after some kind of planetary catastrophe.... Anyways, she and Goku are best friends. Idk much abt Chao's character, but I did notice that her outfit is a changshan, which is generally considered masculine (it has a feminine counterpart, the cheongsam, which looks completely different!) so it could mean that she is a tomboy? Or maybe she just prefers loose fitting clothes.
Regarding Boboo, I suppose they're an ifrit like Efreeti. They're not actually allied w Dark Matter though, they're just incredibly self serving, almost animalistic. Their entire body is made of flame except for their shoes, which are stainless steel. Anything they touch, they will attempt to overtake and assimilate as fuel! They seem terrifying, but can still be put out (almost) as easily as any other fire.

(Everything was made through picrew. Click alt text to see which one was used)
Rin
The “mother” of the group. She’s a kind soft hearted elf that lost her sight due to horrible people taking advantage of her kindness but despite past horrible experiences, she still remains kind to all creatures alike
Picrew credits: Yuyuki-shiki Joshi Maker (Yuyuki Ei) (Not sure if this is right because the description was google translated so it might’ve been translated a bit differently)
Elyria
A mischievous little imp who decided to tag along with the group since she was bored. Likes causing chaos/troubles
Picrew credits: ??? (Pls lmk if you know!!)
Valerie
The youngest of the group. Due to her often clueless ms. I can’t read the room attitude, she finds herself in unnecessary trouble quite often (It’s a lie. She makes trouble on purpose for the thrill)
Picrew credits: @ri_osa_mu on twt/X
“N”
The self-proclaimed leader of the group. He’s a “normal average working adult person” who’s actually just free loading in Rin’s little cottage a.k.a his base of operations and also the only human in the group. Maybe. 🤷
Picrew credits: 「海ひつじ屋め~か~」 製作者:はねぽち / ▧ “Umi Sheep Shop Meka”. Producer: Hanepochi
Extras:
Rin may be blind but her glasses still have a use!! It’s magical glasses that enhances her senses. It helps kind of replace her eyes..Somehow..
Their earrings are a sort of friendship bracelets but make it earrings. Elyria has a different style of earrings because it’s where her magic sorcery stuff is stored (Basically a magic stone)
Elyria claims that Valerie is her sister because they both have braids in their hair
Yes, the black outfit is on purpose. It’s the “group color” apparently

Since they’re remaking Famicom Detective Club, I wonder if Nintendo has any plans to remake any of the other Famicom/Super Famicom visual novels
I’d love to finally be able to play Shin Onigashima, Yuyuki, Time Twist, Hajimari no Mori, and whatever other obscure visual novels Nintendo had back in the day
I’d be especially down for Hajimari no Mori since they had originally intended to make it a franchise but released it at a bad time in the Super Famicom’s lifecycle, so it’d be cool to see it come back and potentially kick that off like they had planned
