「The Gene of Not Giving Up」 Hori Miona X Yoda Yuki Special Talk

Second gen Hori Miona and third gen Yoda Yuki. Getting chosen as center not too long after joining the group, then falling out of senbatsu, these two have experienced similar circumstances. Let’s dig a little deeper into these two’s hearts.

—— Even though the two of you are from different gens, your past circumstances still have some similarities. 

H: I’m not sure if there are similarities in that aspect, but both of us are very much ‘my pace’, or you could say that we’re very similar in that we often get lost in our thoughts. (laughs)

Y: That sounds about right. (laughs)

—— Let’s look back. Standing in the center position soon after joining the group, what type of direct effect did it bring you?

H: By being in the center position, the chances of being a topic and getting attention will of course increase; receiving an even bigger opportunity through it will be even more better for you. When I was given the center position at a time when I lacked skill and experience, I realized how admirable the senpais were. And through activities with the senpais, I really experienced how far off I was from them, but also had the chance to fill in the areas I was lacking in.

Y: 3ki joined Nogizaka46 when it was a complete group. Because I originally already really liked [Nogi], my feelings as a fan never faded away. But after I was suddenly selected as Center, as I participated in activities along with the senpais, I looked upon the senpais’ backs in a way I hadn’t before. Since then, I felt like I had an awakening; I came to want to become like someone else, wanted to try to perform like someone else. Amidst the helplessness I painfully experienced through senbatsu, I was also rewarded by many other things.

—— I see, so standing in that Center position left a big impact on the you now.

H: I can’t help but feel that that was a really good experience.

—— What do you mean by that?

H: As I reflect back on that time, I also must be more proactive moving forward. Otherwise, there will definitely not be a second chance.

—— This type of thought process, did it develop after joining Nogizaka46?

H: Yes, I started thinking this way after joining Nogizaka46.

Y: I have the same way of thinking as well.

H: It’s very important to steer memories and experiences towards an active direction.

Y: Yes. Before I joined Nogizaka46, I was a sensitive and weak child who wouldn’t go to school if I had to deal with even the smallest thing I didn’t like. For example, when entering middle school from elementary school, the number of students would naturally increase; this change in environment would immediately cause me to be discouraged, want to run away, give up. 

H: I was also the type to run away if met with something I didn’t like. But I came to dislike even more the me who only knew how to run away, so to have become a more zealous person in Nogizaka46, I’m really happy. 

Y: The me now can’t run away, and also doesn’t want to run away. I’ve received a job I’m willing to give it my all; to join a group that gives me opportunities is a blessing. If it wasn’t Nogizaka46 that I joined, I might still be running away. (laughs)

—— The impression the two of you give is that, no matter what happens you won’t be wallowing in your feelings, but will pick yourself back up. Is this the mentality a long-time member of Nogizaka46, a long-time idol must have?

H: Your own position, your role in the group, it really changes everyday, faster than you can imagine. Of course you’ll still be receiving the support of fans and family, but only you yourself really experience these constant changes. Though there are regrets and sorrows you don’t say out loud to the people around you, there is a sense of uneasiness that still settles in your heart, so you must directly face and deal with these feelings and just keep moving forward. Even if it’s just for your own sake, you must tackle the negative attitude and painful things, and turn towards a positive direction, day by day living with the attitude of “next time I’ll do my best too!” 

Y: There’s a lot of self-examination, and there are a lot of worries. But while I may be reflecting, I never have regrets. This is also because I’m consciously controlling this. 

H: I also try to be honest with myself, and I don’t lie to myself. I will go towards what I want to do, say, speak, act, think, and not be misled by others. With this mentality, I will still listen to others’ opinions, maintain a flexible mindset, and find value in them. 

—— Now I can strongly feel that Nogizaka46 has become a new team again. How do the two of you feel about the current group?

H: Compared to the environment, style, members from when I first joined it’s all different now. However, it’s really interesting right now too. I feel very fortunate to be able to experience these changes. Every time there's a big transition, I feel that I must become more mature. Though at the same time with these changes, I must also keep what the senpais had valued in their early days. I also hope that new members can really experience what the senpais have left behind, pass it down, use their own ways to express them, become a Nogizaka46 of a different style but still approved by all. I also hope that fans can accept these changes.

Y: A lot of 1ki and 2ki senpais have graduated, there will be more people graduating, and during this time 4ki kouhais have also joined...how do I say this? In the future, I have to work even harder, I also understand that I can’t continue on like how I am now. When I first joined, watching the senpais from their backs was so impressive. But now I’ve become a senpai, and am not nearly anywhere as great. So, I must have a sense of urgency. For myself and the team, now is the time to put in our all.

So... Time for something totally different, and much more obscure. (Over time, my blog will become a patchwork of random things, probably) First time posting art here too. ꉂ (´∀｀)ʱªʱªʱª

It's May 28th, and Yuki Maeda's birthday. Of critical hit (to the kneecaps) Danganronpa Another fangan fame. So here's some art I made beforehand. Also featuring the other two because they don't have a known birthday outside of this and I wasn't going to not draw my best boy, (or leave our resident nothing guy out.)

It may not count for much against all the stones thrown (to put it lightly) but this time they're bringing him a cake and happy birthday wishes. And besides, drawing these two doing something nice for Yuki makes me happy.

The guy deserves to just have a good birthday in peace. Happy Birthday Yuki!

Hello again! Dunno when you’ll be back online, but when you do return, could you tell me of any potential DRA ships you have? Additionally, do you plan to make them canon or ship-tease them in your pony AU?

I hope you're ready for an info dump because I have a lot of thoughts about class 79!

Ships... the age old question...

I'm honestly not the kind of person who gets heavily invested into a lot of ships. That being said, I do enjoy them a lot, especially when it involves a cast I am as attached to as class 79! And one of those handful of ships I am highly invested in is a DRA ship, lol. (It's Kinjomae... and to be honest, a really big part of my DRA special interest is filled by those two characters, and Utsuro, in general if not together)

Kinjo and Yuki tend to end up being with central roles in most of my DRA related thoughts, art, and writing, it just kind of sneaks in, regardless, somewhere.

I like interpreting them in a queer platonic or more ace-leaning relationship as well. Not always, but I've made a habit of it. So yeah they're going to have a relationship of some sort in this au too.

To specify, I am referring to DRA1 Yuki; I don't really ship the real Yuki and Tsurugi together. To me, they are two very distinct characters with different personalities from each other despite their similarities, not just memories... I won't get into all that (a post for another day perhaps) but in context of Kinjomae, only one of them is his Yuki, who knows and cares for him.

Exploring the relationship between Tsurugi and (actual) Yuki Maeda is still super interesting though, and I can understand why people ship it, there's loads of interesting places to go with it.

Also, I'm the kind of fan who can be swayed to accept almost any pairing or headcanon, especially in the context of the respective work (art/writing, etc) I really think it's possible to execute pretty much anything in a convincing manner if done well, and that applies to ships and stuff. Are there some ships and/or headcanons that give me the ick? Yup. Are there some I just don't like? Yeah. It just takes a lot for me to really get to a level where I hate something.

Uh, let's see... there are a few other ships I tend to immediately think of, even if I'm not as invested!

Ayame/Akane (may or may not be teased or explored in the pony au)

Satsuki/Haru (they'll probably be canon, I mean... it's satsuki and haru)

Rei/Teruya (I love their dynamic, regardless of the type of relationship they have)

Utsuro/Akane (they are super fascinating and it would feel remiss not to include this one in some manner)

I'm not sure yet what I'll do in this AU with everyone, we'll see. Including friend groups: I want to make more 'mane 6' type groups from the rest of the cast but I haven't finalized any of them besides the main one yet.

That's one of the things that makes me love class 79 so much; they feel very real to me, individually and how they all interact with each other. I'm invested in them as a group, and in all the little friendships and groups within the class. So I might spend more time thinking about them in terms of friendships and other relationships than pairings, except for Kinjo and Yuki of course.

My favorites of those are:

best siblings yamato and mikako

the if only group: teruya, tsurugi, rei, yuki, akane, yamato, and mikako. (who also happen be most of the mane 6 for my pony au, and are my favorite characters along with Utsuro, pretty much.)

I love this cast a lot if you couldn't tell by now.

My least favorites are Mitch and Kizuna, though. I don't dislike them, but Kizuna in particular I am really neutral toward compared to everyone else.

I feel like I just... don't have a grasp on what kind of character she is at all? Her story in the game combined with her FTEs left me pretty conflicted about her. It feels like there were many opportunities to give more insight into her, but none of them worked for me.

I mean, we get to meet her mom, and even that didn't give me any more insight into her childhood or personality at all... which is kind of hard to ignore when the time we spend (or being told about via FTES) with Ando, Keisuke, Ryutaro, and Midori all give their respective family members more context and anchors we didn't have before. Plus the tiniest whiff of Juu we get speaks volumes for Tsurugi's upbringing, it is very easy to fill in the blanks.

As much as it is a tradition to hate on Mitch, I don't really hate him as a character: he works perfectly well for the kind of role he's meant to fill, (I mean, he's designed to be a case 1 killer first and foremost) and personally, I find it a lot easier to add layers to him than Kizuna because he has a base I can wrap my head around, unlike Kizuna, even if it is a really simple one.

Anyways...

almost any rei pairings (I usually pass on the very gloomy and incoming divorce vibes of tsurugi/rei though) maybe partially because I (personally) have difficulties seeing Tsurugi being in relationships with women. Sorry, but I can't undo it. He's just gay in my eyes. And/or ace and homoromantic.

Clover Shores

Alright back to posting dra ponies again. This time, we have Yuki. We're getting into the ones I wanted to do most now haha.

Clover Shores is the most recent addition to their friend group. He gets along with pretty much everyone, even the more distant or prickly ponies he meets. Due to a combination of him being a bit of a social chameleon, a fair amount of patience, and his avid curiosity, Clover has a pretty high success rate when it comes to getting close to others.

However, from the opposite direction, perhaps things don't come as easily. Clover may collect secrets, but he rarely seems to give his own away. Only a few trusted ponies know much about him beyond the basics. And his biggest secrets remain unknown to all.

Sometimes, Clover Shores takes a bit to respond to his name. And his mark doesn't have much of any obvious ties to his personality or talents. Not that he seems to have any particular stand out talents, anyway. Unlike Thrift, Radiant, or any of the others, he doesn't really seem to tie his identity to any talent in particular, and while he isn't unskilled, he's never claimed to be proficient in anything specific.

That being said, he has a knack at getting through difficult scenarios and has occasionally escaped from unpleasant situations without a clear explanation. His friends have also sometimes benefited from this trait, and so have taken to calling him 'lucky.'

my core four/initial six dra ponies post

Designing Mikako has been a bit of a struggle for some reason, so I figured I'd post some of these and finish the group drawing I've been working on instead.

First, here's a quick lineup of the core four.

From right to left: Radiant Ember (Rei Mekaru), Thrift Twinkle (Teruya Otori), Saber Frost (Tsurugi Kinjo), and Clover Shores (Yuki)

I took away Thrift's rainbow horseshoes and coat dye for this lineup.

I'm still figuring out all their sizes relative to each other, but hey these four look good together color wise, sucess! It's been a while since I've designed characters as a set like this. Drawing stylized ponies is kind of a struggle (particularly the legs send help) but I'm happy with them so far despite that.

I'll probably actually share lore next time but this one'll just be art. I do have some stuff written/thought up about Saber, Scarlet, Clover, and Kismet in particular.

Also, here's one of Saber and Ember, in the middle of a heated argument, with poor Thrift in the background. Clover wasn't around that day so he has to put up with it on his own. Saber probably started this somehow and likely deserves whatever verbal lashing Ember is about to give him, I imagine. You can ignore that I didn't bother with the details of Ember's crystal hair lol.

And finally, I was able to finish this hangout for them all. This group is kind of the main 6 of this little AU, (initial six? fun group names anyone?) though Gizmo and Moonshade aren't always around, since they live in Canterlot. And other characters carousel through of course.

The still unnamed small main town (if you have any ideas let me know I haven't thought of any appropriately horse pun filled or cozy sounding names yet.) is near the mountains. This scene is from one of Gizmo and Moonshade's visits to see the other four. Nothing like hot cocoa around a campfire. It was pretty nice to just work on a piece like this for a while. Adding all the little details and not worrying too much about it being 'good' you know? just self indulgent, cozy art.

I'll be honest, I don't think I've ever drawn mlp magic before in full, that turned out a little ehh... and there are other things that bug me about this. (mikako/moonshade's design may or may not be accurate later lol) But honestly being able to draw and make art is kind of more than enough for me at the moment haha. It made me smile on a bad day, imperfections and silly ass subject matter be damned.

his flames hide something deeper

I finally got around to finishing the second drawing in this duo so time to post more random au/crossover stuff...

Tried to experiment a bit with how to present traditional art again... And man, I don't think I've ever drawn Pyra and Mythra's armor properly but it was just as complex as I figured it would be even simplifying stuff a bit. Also it's altered for the boys here ofc. Sorry but I chose not to draw Yuki or Utsuro with boob windows lol. Mythra's outfit was a lot harder to modify/genderbend, I don't think I like it quite as much as Pyra's for Yuki but oh well.

They're still missing part of their core crystal here, Tsurugi has the other piece like Rex in-game. And he'd be their driver ofc. Cause, you know, reviving your partner via god powers and then having your lives tied together and all that.

don't think I would make Tsurugi a Rex equivalent tho, or at least not a salvager haha. He's probably from Mor Ardain or something like that. Rex and Tsurugi are way too incompatible in terms of character traits for that lmao. Imagine Tsurugi rattling of the salvager's code or complaining about 'gramps' yeah no that's not working for me (would be funny to draw him in the diving suit though).

I won't spoil too much but if you have played Xenoblade 2 you might see the connections between the two duos I saw. Beyond the uh, main obvious one lol. For example, Mythra and Utsuro creating a 'better' version of themselves in Pyra and Yuki, who have a lot less of their cosmically disastrous power, and personalities they consider to be superior or easier to deal with.

Also, the power of the Aegis is highly coveted by many in Alrest, similar to how divine luck is in DRA/SDRA2, and Pyra/Yuki hover under the radar more in that regard.

p.s. Yamato would probably be Addam. Or possibly Zeke because Yuki, Utsuro, and Tsurugi probably need some sort of protagonist energy to carry them along cause Tsurugi is not gonna be doing the whole hope and friendship power thing like Rex lol. Not sure about the rest but maybe Akane and Nia could fit well.

I found out that apparently sites like blingees and pimix are still around... and I may or may not have spent a few hours making silly little 2010s blog-coded web collages. (and may or may not do it again) (who knows). I tested it out with the former one first, but in my heart, I saw that one Kinjo sprite, and I knew. /silly /j

This is my gift to you today tumblrfolk. Whether it's a curse or blessing is in the eye of the beholder. I don't know. You tell me. I'm amused, at least.
