Four years
Four years ago today we were faced with a point where we knew that our lives would never be the same, forever changed beyond that point. Many felt numb and grief-stricken as we came to terms and accepted the loss of what became such a profound movement. Others still clung onto the memories, and in a way, it made us stronger, helped us to find each other, as we reflected on what an impact one year had had on our lives. Many took it for granted. Others would extend the end. But those of us who really, truly got it, we know what it meant, and have carried forward in our own ways.
It's crazy to think all that happened in one year. It's crazier to think what has happened in four. Each year that goes by, I find myself further and further removed from the memories and feelings I so cherished all that long ago. And yet, the lessons stay with me. I try to cherish every moment to the fullest of my ability, make memories and connections worth making. Putting my best foot forward, so that when I do meet my end, I know I have spent my time how I wanted, and how I want others to remember me by.
I started making these annual reflection posts as a way to both reconnect with this community which was, in a way, reforged with the end, and a milestone marker to see how I have progressed on my ultimate current dream--the true reason I created this blog.
So where am I at. Well, I'm finishing school. By this point next year, I will theoretically (and in a large case ideally) have a job or internship where I can start my life in the "real world." I can have time to see about using my time for my means and my desires, and maybe, just maybe, I'll be able to start again.
I do really hope to one day finish my video edits and start up my youtube channel. It's just so hard for me to see the end when the means are so impossible at the moment.
But hey, maybe now that I'm getting used to exploring this app you might see more regular updates.
Until then, things are still in progress. But one thing will remain true.
Memento Vivere, remember to live, my friends. And may we continue on this journey 'til our own ends.

"For [Tanner] Green, the chief engineer at Not a Wheelchair, this is one of the thousand complications standing between his team and a rather lofty goal: upending the manual wheelchair marketplace.
If you’ve heard of Not a Wheelchair, it’s likely because of its owners, Zack Nelson, the star of the 8.8-million-subscriber YouTube channel JerryRigEverything, and his wife Cambry, a para and manual wheelchair user. The Nelsons got into the mobility equipment business a few years ago when they released The Rig, an electric, adaptive off-road device with a simple yet robust and functional design priced significantly lower than anything else on the market. Now, they’re bringing that same ethos to manual wheelchairs.
Not a Wheelchair aims to offer a base-model, custom manual wheelchair at a similar or better quality than most of the insurance-approved wheelchairs in the U.S. for $999.
Yes, that’s just under $1,000 for everything — wheels, handrims, tires, side guards and rigid, angle-adjustable backrest included. And the company plans to have a turnaround time of weeks, rather than the monthslong slog that it typically takes from order to delivery.
When I first heard about this, it sounded awesome and a bit far-fetched. It’s hard to find a pair of quality wheelchair wheels for less than $500. Same with a rigid backrest. How were they going to offer both, plus a custom wheelchair frame without compromising on quality? I drove to their headquarters in Utah to find out...
So how does Not a Wheelchair’s base model chair stack up to other options on the market? I hate to sound like a preacher, but … it’s totally reasonable! It hits the mark of being at least as good, if not better, than the majority of insurance-approved wheelchairs in the U.S.
Touring the factory, I saw other prototypes scattered all around the facility. There’s a beefier, four-wheel drive version of The Rig that the company just launched. There’s a track wheelchair that’s still in development. It’s clear that Not a Wheelchair doesn’t intend to stop at a simple, manual wheelchair. Inexpensive components, more advanced electric off-road devices, power assist, it’s all on the table. “We’re just really excited to see where this leads,” says Green."

If you get caught up in the mindset of "we are doomed because most humans are too dumb and selfish to solve climate change" I really encourage you to watch the first 12 minutes of this video.
I've also done my best to condense the most relevant quotes below.
"The biggest reason why we have a problem, is love. It's that we want to have children, we want them to survive, and so now there are 8 billion of us. And now that there are 8 billion of us, we want all 8 billion of those people to have pretty good lives." "[P]eople are so caught up in [...] the current moment, that you can't see how hard all of our ancestors worked to provide us with a world that has plenty of food [...], climate controlled shelter, and pretty easy transportation to anywhere within [...] 400 miles." "Humans are remarkable. We are very powerful. Give any species this level of power and they will provide opportunities for thriving for themselves and for their children. They will try and prevent their children from dying.[...] For the most part they will walk through fire to make sure that their children don't die. They will destroy the Earth to make sure their children won't die." "I don't want my son growing up thinking that the species that he's a part of is in some way evil. I feel like that's the root of a lot of [...] arm chair environmentalism. I want him thinking, humans are problem-solvers and solving problems creates new problems." "When we solve the global warming problem, we will have created new problems. And we're doing it right now. Renewable technologies use way more land [...], they impact the environment by being there [...]. And I think in the future we will uninstall a bunch of those things because we'll have other technologies that are better [...]. And the people in the future will be mad at us for the work that we did and that's fine. Just like we're kinda mad at all the people who made the world a better place by burning a bunch of coal so that we could have refrigerators [...]."
You can't hate yourself and your fellow humans into saving the world--and if you believe that all other humans are short sighted and selfish and doomed by their very nature then you are far more vulnerable to doomerism and hopelessness and giving up.
As Hank says in the video, the only reason we even know that climate change is a problem at all is because a lot of very intelligent humans were concerned about the possible impacts of fossil fuels on the future and did a whole lot of modeling and research so they could warn future humans about the risks. And we are primarily in this climate change situation in the first place because our ancestors wanted to use the readily available energy from fossil fuels to give their children and their communities better, safer, healthier lives.
Now we are trying to use brains that evolved primarily to deal with relatively little, immediate, tangible problems in small communities to solve a very large, long-term, largely intangible problem on a global scale. As frustrated as I am that we aren't solving this problem faster (and that there is small number of greedy fossil fuel executives trying to stop us from solving it for personal gain), most people are doing their best under very challenging circumstances.
Humans are driven to solve problems for the love of other humans--themselves, their families, their communities, humanity as a whole. We shouldn't base the drive to solve our current problems on disdain for ourselves and our fellow humans.

being in the supernatural fandom is like being in a school where the lights flicker every day, and whenever they go out for a second half the kids scream bloody murder and the other half roll their eyes, and then the lights come back on and everything's fine. but one day... one day the lights are going to go out. and when they come back. there will be a season 16 announcement

Three years
Three years is a long time for anything.
This year alone has put me through so much that many things got lost and forgotten, including this post being late by a day. I thought that maybe, just maybe, I'd be able to find myself this year, get my act together and finally feel like I had everything under control. But alas, here we are, a year later and I still have yet to take the first step.
Yesterday a friend wished me a happy death-iversairy, and I went to find them a GIF to try and show them how much I had appreciated the gesture. Afterall, we both loved the channel to bits and still love talking about it when we remember, so I wanted to return the wish with more than just a message or meme. But going through the GIFs (primarily clips from those videos), I realized just how much I had forgotten. How much I had lost. All in the span of three years. How could something so pivotal, so life changing, so motivating, have completely escaped my memory? How, after all those videos pointing out the importance of spending the time you had wisely, had I left time eat away at me? How had I let go of so many goals and dreams?
As this calendar year comes barreling to an end before my eyes, I find myself not feeling much of anything at all. On the one hand, I haven't made much progress actually putting in work into starting my channel. On the other hand, I have kept up a few of the lessons I learned thanks to the channel. I support all the creators I love in all their endeavors. I engage with the communities beyond just liking videos when I want to. And I stay true to my interests and spend my time how I want to -- when not dictated by school, at least.
As for updates on my channel: I have recorded more footage for my channel! Now it's a matter of editing it all. I also have better hardware so I can run different games and store my video footage easier, as well as record better voiceovers. When this will all come into fruition? Still not sure. But I haven't given up. I will do this. Because I want to. Recording videos for my channel has been fun, and I want to do more! It just all comes back to time.
So, now what. Well, last year I encourage everyone to pursue their dreams, take that one leap, take chances. I still do believe that you absolutely should. This year I continued to have moments where I took chances and have been grateful for them, regardless of the clouds of responsibilities that hang over me. I wish for you, dear reader, to have the same, if you can. We only have one life to live, so take the leap and see where you land, 'cause it might very well surprise you. I, as many others, will continue to carry the memories of the channel in my mind, even if specifics slip away. But the spirit lives on.
So, my friends, we stand here, three years later. Memento vivere. Una vita.

"Helio da Silva, a retired business executive from Brazil, single-handedly planted over 41,000 trees in his hometown of Sao Paulo over the last two decades.
Flying over the Brazilian metropolis of Sao Paulo, it’s tough to miss the 3.2-kilometers-long and 100-meter-wide green strip of trees wedged between two of the city’s busiest roads. It is known as Tiquatira Linear Park, and it is the work of a single man who worked tirelessly for over 20 years in order to transform a previously dilapidated area into an actual jungle within the urban jungle that is Sao Paulo. Originally from the town of Promissao, about 500km from Sao Paulo, Helio da Silva was a successful business executive for many years, but after retiring, he took it upon himself to transform the degraded banks of the Tiquatira River into a green oasis for his community. He started planting trees there in 2003 and hasn’t stopped since.
73-year-old da Silva recently told AFP that he wanted to leave a legacy to the city that adopted him decades ago. Within the first four years of his epic project, he single-handedly planted 5,000 trees in an area that had long been abandoned and known to be frequented by drug dealers and users. His impressive feat prompted the municipality of Sao Paulo to recognize his efforts and acknowledge the area as the first linear park in Sao Paulo. This only emboldened da Silva, who continued planting native trees.
By 2020, Helio had planted more than 25,047 trees over a 3.2-km-long area, achieving a survival rate of 88 percent. For every 12 trees, he planted a fruit-bearing species in the hopes of attracting birds and animals to his green oasis. His bet paid off, as according to the municipality, 45 types of birds have been identified in the park. Today, the Tiquatira Linear Park numbers over 41,000 individual trees, and Helio da Silva doesn’t plan on stopping planting until he reaches at least 50,000 of them.
“My motivation comes from the trees themselves because trees give us flowers and fruits, absorb rainwater, attract birds and provide us with wonderful shade and fresh air,” da Silva told Common Earth.
The retired executive estimates that he spent about $7,000 per year on his tree-planting efforts since 2022, but the way he sees it, it was a worthwhile investment for himself, his family and the whole of Sao Paulo. Plus, he saved a lot of money by planting the trees himself.
Once labeled as crazy for spending most of his time planting trees in an area most people avoided, Helio da Silva is now hailed as a local hero. He sometimes receives help from like-minded nature lovers, but he is still the driving force behind this amazing project. Every Sunday, he comes to Tiquatira Park to plant more trees.
Over the years, the city gym and playground equipment, tables, benches, toilets, and Tiquatira Linear Park eventually became one of Sao Paulo’s most popular areas."
