YouTube Integration Update
TL;DR: It ain't happenin', folks.
Standard Greeting Protocol, Toaster Frickers! So far, using Restream to multi-stream to YouTube has been functional enough for the sake of providing an additional watch vector as well as VOD backups. During this testing process, I did outline several potential functionality upgrades to integrate YouTube API stuff into KT-1632, namely subscriptions, monetization events, and a very limited embedded chat. Unfortunately, after reviewing the API documentation, I have decided to hold off on doing so indefinitely.
And, by "hold off indefinitely", I mean… Guys, it's bad. It's real bad. I'll put a more in-depth technical explanation of how bad it is somewhere else (probably the Discord and/or on Tumblr), but in short: It is literally impossible to have a real-time representation of stream chat, or literally any channel event on YouTube.
As such, I will likely not be spending any resources on making the YouTube streaming experience more interactive for YT watchers, and will instead focus on reminding YT watchers that Twitch is the main focus for stream interaction. I'd like to also mention I am working on some new stuff to try and help with audience interaction on Twitch as well, so look forward to that!
That's all in terms of important stuff for layman's terms, so let's get down to brass tacks.
When it comes to Twitch integration, it's pretty simple. Stream chat is handled via an IRC (Internet Relay Chat) protocol, a well-documented connection-based asynchronous realtime message system. KT-1632 easily connects to this via a standard greeting protocol (heh) over an ongoing connection that is authenticated using similar methods to the rest of the Twitch API. Meanwhile, other events, such as follows, channel points, subscriptions, etc. are all handled using either PubSub (publish/subscribe messaging protocol, also over an async connection) or the Websockets-based EventSub endpoint. This is all great, because all we have to do to maintain this is an occasional exchange of incredibly small keep-alive packets; we simply wait for Twitch to give us the good news in all these scenarios, and then handle those events as they arrive.
YouTube's API has… literally nothing.
Okay, it's not nothing nothing, obviously they have a series of REST (representational state transfer) API calls. I make an HTTP GET request, posting a ton of authentication information as well as the details of exactly what I want YouTube to do -- such as "give me the names of all public subscribers on the channel", or "create a Community post with the following text" -- and YouTube gives me some sort of response with the results of the request, generally in a big glob of JSON data. This is fine for an entirely passive system to generate a number somewhere on initialization of a webpage, or making some sort of administrative action.
So, you find yourself asking the exact same question I am: How do you get stream chat?
YouTube's own documentation, as well as every single resource I could find on the matter online, only have one answer: You (the developer) make one REST API call at a time, at some sort of polling rate, and process the result yourself, in order to find out if there's anything new to process. You drive out to YouTube, knock on YouTube's door, ask them if there are new chat messages, they give you a piece of paper that you need to process in a machine back home, you drive back home, and you run that piece of paper through the machine, and it tells you "Nope, no new messages." And, you have to do that every time you are ready to read a new chat message, whether there was one or not.
And guess what? That drive to and from YouTube costs gas. The REST API has rate limits that are entirely unreasonable for the sake of streaming. YouTube gives you a "quota" (worst choice of word for it, by the way) of 10,000 points per day, and every single REST call costs at least 1 quota. Let's say I wanted the absolute bare minimum of 1000ms "response time", I.E. one full second between polling calls, meaning messages can take up to a full second to show up on stream, which is already pretty egregious. Let's do the math! A full four hour stream is 240 minutes… which is 14,440 seconds… at one request per second, that's already 144% the daily "quota". And that's just for stream chat. It's a shared pool if I also wanted subscriptions, memberships, superchats, etc.
There is no websocket endpoint. There is no PubSub. There is no IRC. It's just REST calls, and you do not get enough REST calls (without paying Google, that is) to run a full stream at realtime, even with 1000ms latency.
This is incredibly ridiculous, especially given how easy and efficient it is to set up any sort of publish-subscribe endpoint over an exclusively RESTful API. Google's a massive corporation with insane technologies with more than enough manpower and machine-power to make this happen. Twitch's API is a bit jank and annoying to learn, but it fucking works. I feel like I'm screaming at Google, "JUSTIN KAN WAS ABLE TO BUILD THIS IN A CAVE! WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS!"
But yeah, in conclusion, no YouTube chat integration or notifications for now. The streams themselves aren't going away, but I will be paying even less attention to the chat moving forward, outside of moderation duties as required of me.

Thought I'd post some more propaganda, since people are really getting mad at ONLY /u/Spez for this. For the people in the back that are still using Reddit- this is ultimately the reason why I left Reddit.
TL;DR: Yes, /u/spez is the CEO of Reddit, but now he's beholden to the true owners of Reddit- Literal white supremacists, Chinese businesses looking to subvert American democratic values, and businesses that are desperately looking for new ways to make money after a pandemic has gutted the people dry of all the money it could take.
Let's get a little Pepe Silvia in here, shall we? Setting mood music:
youtube
Reddit was originally founded by /u/Spez (real name Steve Huffman), Alexis O'Hanion, and Aaron Swartz (RIP). In 2006, Conde Nast bought Reddit. So, if you read Vogue, Pitchfork, Wired, Vanity Fair, & the New Yorker, you may have gotten some of the same content owned by the same company- just through a magazine rather than Reddit. Also, since June 2020, Conde Nast has claimed that their advertising revenue has gone down 45% have gone down dramatically since the pandemic, alongside the cancellation of major publications by Conde Nast. Buut in 2017, Reddit was made into an independent subsidiary by Advance Publications. Sounds like an innocent enough name, until you look at which companies these lovely people own:
That Charter Communication, is just a fancy name for the lovely ISP known as Spectrum- Better known to some of our older folks as Time Warner Cable. You know, one of the ISPs so hated in the United States that they actively changed their name so that people wouldn't recognize them doing their dirty work again?
Isn't it interesting that one of the main complaints by Huffman is that Reddit isn't getting it's due in advertising revenue? Huh. I wonder where he's getting that from. But that's only one section of the shit sandwich. Let's talk about some of the lovely* investors that Reddit's had on aboard since 2006. The list is.... interesting. 2014: A group of investors, including Marc Andressen (an investor in nearly all of the major social media networks that exist), Peter Thiel (a literal white supremacist), and for some reason, Snoop Dogg and fucking Jared Leto. 2017: Advance Publications buys Conde Nast and subsequently Reddit, raising its valuation to about $1.8 billion. 2019: Tencent (you know, the CHINESE VIDEO GAME COMPANY THAT HAS BANNED PLAYERS FROM THEIR GAMES FOR SUPPORTING HONG KONG DEMOCRACY DEMONSTRATIONS) buys a 5% stake in the company. Did I mention that Tencent is also the largest gaming company in the world? 2021: Fidelity Investments(??? an insurance firm and mutual fund????) decides to add another $700 million to the pot, giving them a whole stake as well too. So, let's tie this all together. Yes, /u/spez is the CEO of Reddit, but now he's beholden to the true owners of Reddit- Literal white supremacists, Chinese businesses looking to subvert American democratic values, and businesses that are desperately looking for new ways to make money after a pandemic has gutted them dry. Of course Huffman is going to stay the course on this one- his job literally depends on it in the first place. All of the people that make this site (what other social media network do you know that doesn't pay it's mods and is valued at $10 billion dollars) ? have been tossed to the side in favor of making money. Remember this:
Reddit and its investors do not give a fuck about their community.
They do not give a fuck about their moderators. They do not give a fuck about disability rights. Most of all? They don't give a fuck about you.

So, follow up to the previous post about my game:
So you know how almost all mascot horror games are about you visiting a facility with a bunch of employees who become monsters in an attempt to make whatever mascot the game is based on, right? Well, what if you were an employee at one of these companies and end through that yourself? That’s the base premise of my game when it comes to the story.
The protagonist will be Ian Apis, a writer for a Comic’s Syndicate for an Office-type comic about a (bumble?)bee working with a bunch of other bugs. As the writer, he decided to self insert himself as the bee (which I don’t have the name for, yet), so much so that their personalities become a bit too similar. It ended up kicking him in the ass, though, because when he went to quit his job, guess what happened?
He ends up as the best attempt they’ve had for any of the characters, but obviously because he retained his brain he’s not going down without a fight. And that’s about as much as I can disclose without spoiling any in-game plot that’s beyond the premise.
I’ve got a lot of designs I’ll show in another post and I’ve even been working on a 3D model for Ian (my 4th attempt)
I’ve been studying games like the Resident Evil series in order to not only give a better horror experience, but also because I want the game to be a survival horror. Though , I don’t think I’ll end up having combat as anything major. But, ressource management and puzzle solving absolutely will be. I got inspired by my Dad who had a kidney transplant and has to take a bunch of anti-rejection and other pills to make the ressource management aspect be mostly medicine based since you did have to be transformed into a cartoon bee some way, and it sure wasn’t a poof of magic.
The setting will be in an old printing press that the Syndicate had bought out to carry out the experiments without having to change anything in their main office. I’ve been experimenting with different ways a printing press (which I plan to make a maximum of three floors as an issue I have with the genre is that there’s too many floors) could be turned into a place to do experiments, such as the first room in the game being clearly an old break room where the couch was half-hazardously turned into a surgery table.
I’ll share more here later, but for now this is the most I’ve ever shared about my project
(Also, the comic being in an office setting was actually from my brother’s girlfriend since I shared some stuff with them (and that was the first time I shared anything ever) but it was always about bugs)
#follow up on last post#gonna make a YouTube series about the development of this#also this will be chapter based since I’m a lone developer and it’s customary of the genre#also Apis is a pun on bee

Direct Mail for Financial Advisors
In the financial service industry, it is crucial to build credibility and trust among the masses. These are the two main factors that keep businesses in the business and help them grow further. People will only work with companies that they find trustworthy and whose services are useful to them. Conducting marketing campaigns is essential for attracting and converting customers that will stay with you for life. Direct mail is an effective marketing technique that helps achieve this objective. It helps personalize a message and connects with the audience in a manner that is not possible with digital marketing.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/78858e6439e5b963c341f28b04eb1abb/794d02c8cbc4f2fe-3e/s400x600/d74fe30069aa01e89dc461167805ce6a1f21feb7.jpg)
With the current economic crisis, money woes are top of mind for many people. As such, financial advisors have a unique opportunity to set themselves apart from their competition. They can use direct mail to reinforce their brand identity and message in a way that will resonate with potential clients.
The power of physical mail is undeniable, especially in the finance industry. It is more likely to get noticed than an email, and it allows you to present a larger image that will make your client feel special. In addition, with the help of variable data printing, you can provide a personalized touch to each piece.
Direct mail is a great way to reach out to millennials who are setting up their careers, starting families, buying homes or cars, taking insurance plans, and saving for the future. Using targeted mailing lists and personalized messages will help you convert these youngsters into your clients.

How Social Media is Rewiring Our Minds
By Ollus Ndomu
When Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp went offline for a few hours mid this year, the world experienced a rare and unsettling silence. Notifications stopped pinging, timelines froze, and WhatsApp chats turned eerily quiet. For many, this wasn’t a respite but a source of stress. Conversations at dinner tables and offices quickly turned to the outage, as millions worldwide grappled with an unnerving reality: we are hopelessly hooked on scrolling.
In the past decade, social media has become as essential as running water for billions. It connects us to friends, provides instant entertainment, and serves as a global newsstand. But alongside these benefits lies an uncomfortable truth: our dependence on these platforms isn’t just habitual, it’s addictive.
The Scrolling Syndrome
Social media addiction isn’t a metaphor; it’s a phenomenon backed by science. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok are engineered to capture attention and keep users hooked. Features like infinite scroll, autoplay videos, and algorithm-driven feeds are designed to deliver quick dopamine hits—the brain's reward chemical. Each like, comment, or share stimulates this reward system, reinforcing the habit of constantly checking and refreshing feeds.
However, these fleeting bursts of pleasure come at a cost. Over time, the brain craves more stimulation, leading to compulsive scrolling. The result? Hours lost in digital rabbit holes and a pervasive sense of dissatisfaction when the dopamine runs out.
Stress on Steroids
The recent social media outage was a stark reminder of how deeply embedded these platforms are in our lives. For many, it wasn’t just about losing entertainment; it felt like losing a lifeline. Social media serves as a primary mode of communication for millions, especially in regions where platforms like WhatsApp are more integral than traditional messaging services.
When the outage hit, anxiety spiked. People were suddenly forced to confront the void; an uncomfortable pause that highlighted their reliance on constant connectivity. This stress wasn’t just anecdotal; mental health experts have long noted how withdrawal symptoms manifest when individuals are abruptly disconnected from digital spaces.
The emotional toll of this dependency is profound. Studies show that excessive social media use is linked to higher rates of anxiety, depression, and loneliness. The curated lives and highlight reels we scroll through daily can distort our perception of reality, leading to feelings of inadequacy and envy.
Why We’re Hooked
Social media’s pull isn’t just about clever design; it taps into fundamental human needs. Platforms provide:
Social validation: Likes, shares, and comments make us feel seen and appreciated.
Connection: In a fragmented world, social media offers a sense of belonging.
Distraction: For many, scrolling is an escape from stress, boredom, or discomfort.
Yet, this constant connection creates a paradox: the more we engage, the more isolated we feel. Real-life interactions, which are richer and more fulfilling, are often sidelined in favor of virtual ones.
Breaking the Cycle
While social media addiction is a complex issue, breaking free is possible. Here are some strategies:
1. Set Boundaries: Limit daily screen time using app trackers or digital wellbeing tools. Commit to phone-free zones like the dining table or bedroom.
2. Embrace Downtime: Replace scrolling with activities that recharge you—reading, exercising, or meditating. Learn to sit with boredom instead of escaping it.
3. Detox Periodically: Take breaks from social media to reset your habits. Start with a day or weekend and gradually extend the duration.
4. Reclaim Real Connection: Prioritize face-to-face interactions with friends and family. Build relationships outside the digital sphere.
5. Audit Your Feeds: Follow accounts that inspire and uplift you. Unfollow those that provoke comparison or negativity.
Reimagining Our Digital Future
Social media isn’t inherently bad, it’s a tool. When used mindfully, it can enhance our lives, foster connections, and amplify voices. The challenge lies in ensuring it serves us, not the other way around.
This year's outage was a moment of collective clarity. It exposed our vulnerability but also offered an opportunity to reassess our relationship with these platforms. As social media continues to evolve, the responsibility to use it wisely rests on individuals, creators, and tech companies alike.
By recognizing the addictive patterns of scrolling and taking proactive steps to counter them, we can reclaim our time, focus, and mental health. After all, life is meant to be lived, not endlessly scrolled.
