The beginning of a career as an event manager

It’s been almost a month since I don’t start the day with another story of EVS volunteers on Facebook. A month without worrying about finding artists to perform and technicians to do the sound check. European Youth Week might be over, but my career as an event manager has just started.

Since the end of February, my colleague Vilija and I have been working in the organisation of European Youth Week, an EU-wide event in which a lot of different organisations talk about opportunities for youth, such as youth exchanges and EVS. Borås has participated for first time, so when we began with the preparations there wasn’t much to start with.

The first thing we decided was collecting stories from other volunteers, either in Sweden or abroad. We made them to send us videos and pictures where they shared their experiences and recommended EVS, and we posted them on Facebook. A lesson: don’t waste your time contacting all 59 sending organisations. Most of them aren’t active. Instead, use your network, they might also have some people to contact too.

We launched the social media campaign in April. We got enough testimonies for each day of the week. I couldn’t be happier! I’d especially like to thank the volunteers that I met in the arrival training in Stockholm. They were very helpful.

But my PR career didn’t finish there. We visited a high school, Bäckängsgymnasiet, to present EVS, and I personally designed the poster of European Youth Week. I’m quite proud of my work. Sorry for this self-centered moment, but I had no idea about graphic design, and just using a free software I gave birth a marvel.

And then, the first week of May. During European Youth Week, we hosted two big events. One was a language café, that it was a big success, with a little help from the team behind Språkvänner at Brygghuset. The second one was the so-called Eramus+ Faktor, an evening of workshops, quizzes and delicious fika. Once again, more EVS propaganda, but all of us, participants and organisers, had fun (and some of them got a backpack).

A big applause for our special guest stars: (1) Frej, an Erasmus student in Spain and soul of Borås Erasmus Student Network; (2) Hans, an EVS volunteer in Stockholm who joined us for the celebration; and (3) Zelma & Josefine, two young singers with a long career ahead.
