Happy Wednesday everyone! Here's a few of the absolute musts we have for any day of finish work, right tool for the right job. Typically we have a couple different sized brushes, stamps of course, carving knife, various trowels these killer crack rollers from @formandbuildsupply and a paint roller with a bit of build up is always best! We have dozens of various levels of build up to try and match the rock. What we tell every new guy/ ourselves at the beginning of the carve. Throw your ego out! This is an art, and our job is to match mother nature (the panels) not to "improve" never put extra texture where it's not needed, never carve a line that doesn't have a purpose and if we do our job perfectly no one will be able to tell when one panel ends and the other begins. We take our time and we don't rush. Everyone also gets a say. Does anything look out of place? Does anything look unnatural? Sometimes the artist has their nose glued to the concrete so long they miss the bigger picture and we force each other to stand back as often as we can. So the number one request for the next series of posts is sculpting! Slightly more difficult now since we are not able to build anything during this shut down. That being said we do have 35 years of photos to pull from and last year we did a pretty cool cave. We sculpt on two different ways. The main way is with panels as seen here. We cut these pieces to meet the design intent. Then we lath each panel together giving us our shape, with the intent to stitch these pieces together without noticing. The next step is seen here, our special polymesh design is made to be flexible and high impact. Once hardened we have no longer have to worry about the shape and we can concentrate on the texture and the carving. Which I'll post later this week.
