One of my all time biggest pet peeves with historical(ish) fantasy is when the writer constructs a religion with a clear bias that it's stupid and false and therefore only the Stupid People and/or commoners believe in it and all the smart/elite main characters are like, quasi-atheists or otherwise just routinely flout established religious conventions of orthodoxy and/or orthopraxy because they're Too Smart for it or etc.

It's usually an extension of assumptions that people in the past were just less intelligent than in the contemporary, just being like "I know that the sun is a star millions of miles away that the earth orbits, but this ancient religion describes it as a chariot flying through the sky" and not really bothering to learn the context and just (consciously or subconsciously) settling on 'that's a crazy thing to think and was probably believed in because they were Stupid'.

And that whole attitude pisses me off so much. People were as 'smart' 10,000 years ago as they are today. These beliefs aren't just desperate, random flailing to explain phenomena that could not directly be accounted for either, it's not like people just looked at the sun and went "Uhhh I don't know what the fuck that thing is, actually. I guess it might be a chariot or a boat or something?? Yeah let's go with that." and based entire religious practices on this. Every well-established belief system exists within broader contexts of cultural values/subjective perceptions of reality/knowledge systems/etc, and exist as part of a historical continuum of religious practices that came before. Even when not Materially Correct, they have context and internal logic, they're not always dead literal with zero levels of allegory, and they're never a result of stupidity.

Bisan is calling for another global strike!

I saw some posts just outlining Jan 21st, and wanted to clarify that Bisan has called for a full seven days of action.

What a global strike would look like is:

calling in sick to work

purchasing bare essentials ahead of the week so you can observe the general boycott of goods / buying as little as you genuinely can

putting in a concerted effort to elevate Palestinian voices and make it clear that this strike is in support of a permanent ceasefire!

For those who will have to purchase necessary goods during this time, please observe the brands that the BDS movement is asking us to boycott!

If you're a creator - painter, graphic artist, musician, writer - and can't see the difference between "inspiration" and "generation" then there's more issues there that have to be thought about than a simple question of "what is ownership".

AI isn't shit, because real people can get inspired or downright copy something too - it's shit, because real people make a decision on what they do with that inspiration. They make a decision if they want to copy or plagiarise. They make a decision on how they will go about it.

AI makes no decisions. It's a fancy Photoshop filter.

AI doesn't spend the time thinking about being original enough and dissecting it's life for traces that other people left in it. It doesn't agonise about a lack of its own voice. It doesn't try to find reasons for why it should be excused as a "useful tool" or an "art form". It doesn't sit there trying to conflagrate two separate issues of actual creativity and ownership, and somehow come to a conclusion they're one and the same.

That's people. AI doesn't make choices on what to take, that to present, how to make your vision alive - it's just a bag of parts stolen from other people you reach into for the prettiest bits that you put together into the prettiest pattern so you can later pretend it was somehow an act of creation aided by a tool.

Can you even say it's "your vision" when you have barely any influence on what it's made of? If it "your vision" if it's someone else's vision - not understood and dissected and learned from - but put into a blender and shat out as a noise to fill in the blanks in "your vision"?

May as well just go ahead and trace someone else's vision from the get go. At least then the author will know what the fuck happened.

Cause that's what AI is created to be - outside of the cloud of hype and philosophical meandering about souls and creativity and own voices and influences - it's tracing with an extra step added. And it's you who makes a decision to do it, not the AI. It's you who decided that you've soul-searched enough and don't have anything more to say. It's you who made a decision you don't care about what you have to say. It's you who decided that other people's words are worth only as much as the guassian blur your fancy filter trawls for pearls.

And if that decision seems like something worth making then I guess that no, you're not an artist after all.

I fully headcannon that Simon Riley is the type to take anything you give him, regardless of the impact to his health.

“Simon, you’re home!”

He had just walked in the door as you take a bite of a cooling cookie. you grab another one and hurry over to give him a hug and kiss, then you hand one of the cookies over to him. “You’ve gotta try these. They’re a cherry cream-cake cookie that my coworker gave me the recipe for. Tell me what you think!”

You wait expectantly for him to try it, bouncing excitedly when he tells you it’s good.

you grin as you stuff the rest of your cookie into your mouth and hurry back to finish your last batch. Simon follows and sits at the kitchen table to visit with you while you finish baking and begin cleaning the kitchen.

Before too long you notice his voice start to go a little hoarse when he answers your questions. as he clears his throat for the third time you ask, “You okay? Do you need something to drink?”

“Nah, I’ll b’ fine” he rasps, standing and coming to give you a kiss on the forehead. “i’ll be back in a bit, lovie.”

Is out the door before you can get your thoughts together enough to question him.

That evening you’re laying in bed when the door opens and in walks Simon.

When he crawls into bed you turn to him and let out a “Simon!’ when you see him covered in hives “what happened to you?”

He tells you he went to A&E since he’s allergic to cherries. His throat was swelling up while he was listening to you tell him about your day and he broke out in hives shortly after he left.

When you grill him, trying to figure out what was going through his mind when he accepted the cookie without saying anything, he just shrugs and pulls you into his chest with an eye roll and a, “it came from you, sweetheart. What was I gonna do? Not eat it?”
