“When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.” - Psalm 94:19
For some time, we have depended on ourselves alone. We depended on the comfort our house brings us, the comfort of our significant others brings us, and the comfort of knowing that we have a family. However, all of these are sometimes not enough. We will be swallowed with anxieties, depression, and sadness once we are alone. It is very hard to stop our own thoughts from flowing. We can never save ourselves from our own overwhelming thoughts, yet a lot of people surpassed these kinds of episodes. Now, the question is, how? How did they be able to overcome their own minds?
Our verse today is the answer to our own questions. It is not new to us that there are a lot of people suffering from mental health problems. Some even died because of it. It is very easy to succumb to the darkness of our mind, that we can never find the light of it. However, we are not alone. Even our psalmist today showed us a hint of his own mental health problems. Well, mental health problems are not a contemporary problem, but it has been a problem since before. A lot of people, even the prophets of God underwent mental health problems. After all, our minds are an endless chasm that sometimes we can never fathom nor understand.
However, our God is an amazing God that even our psalmist in this verse declared with great confidence that even during his anxieties, the consolation of God brought him joy. Even if his own mind was waging a battle that can only be fought by him, he knew that God will always be there and His consolation brought him joy, peace, and confidence that even his restless mind cannot overcome. The joy that only God can give will be enough to overcome our grief, our anxieties, and our depression. Indeed, we are the only ones who can fight this battle, but it will be so hard to fight it alone. That is why we need God, so that is why our verse today is the reminder that we must cling to the joy and peace that only God can give. We may be experiencing a great number of anxieties, but the joy of God and His peace is greater.
Therefore, may we be like our psalmist today, even though he is inflicted with anxieties and sadness, he still finds the joy that only God can give greater than all of these. Let us also see that our God is greater than our battles and we may feel like we are fighting alone, but our God is with us. He will give us joy and peace that nothing can surpass. He will shield us, and protect us with His mighty wings. Let us depend on Him, and submit everything to Him.

Youngsters can be the most vulnerable when it comes to mental health concerns. The COVID-19 pandemic and its economic consequences have had an impact on the mental health of people of all ages, including teens, with continued distance learning, work from home, isolation and limited sports and activities.

Was invited to attend the 'Young people, mental health and well being development day' conference with #ScottishRecoveryNetwork & #ScottishPeerEducationNetwork(SPEN). To collaborate and work on new ways we can start having positive conversations around young people's mental health. It was a lovely afternoon with great discussion and networking with other organizations and their young people on how mental health is changing for the better by young people and what it holds for the future. Was very inspiring and hope we can work together and have more events like this in the future soon. #Wallace High School #GAMH #Carlukeuniversalconnections #AddactionGlasgowNorthWest @samaritanscharity @seemescotland @penumbrascotland @mindcharity #mentalhealth #youngpeople #thefuture #letsdothistogether (at Edinburgh Quaker Meeting House) https://www.instagram.com/p/BpVX49uhW0C/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=5j9g17178kif

Savitribai became the first teacher of the school. Jyotirao and Savitribai later started schools for children from the Mang and Mahar castes, who were regarded as untouchables
However, the enrollment of students from the untouchable community angered orthodox upper-caste Hindus. So, they tried to close these schools. First, they spread rumors about Savitribai; her husband would die prematurely due to her schooling, her food is changing into worms and also that educated women start writing letters to unknown men.
When these tales didn’t discourage Savitribai, they started attacking her on her way to the school by throwing cow dung, eggs, tomatoes, and stones at her. Undeterred, Jyotirao advised her to carry an extra sari in her bag, so that she can wear a fresh one while teaching in the school. Gradually, Savitribai gained the courage to respond to these insults, saying, “Your efforts inspire me to continue my work. May God bless you.” However, this public hooliganism stopped one day after Savitribai slapped a trouble monger and this act of hers became sensational news across Pune.

Digital Champion Blog: Social media affecting body image
Last month, Leila Malik, iSandwell Digital Champion for young persons health issues ran an open data campaign looking at what are the biggest issues young people face in Sandwell. Social media affecting body image can out on top by big margin.
In this blog Leila who is herself a young person based in Tipton, reflects on this issue. You can share your views on Twitter with the #iSandwell hashtag.
Social media plays a big part in our lives. It is such a great, easy way to connect with friends via electronic communication as well as keeping up to date with your favourite celebrities – it has many benefits with so little effort from the comfort of wherever you are. So, with having many benefits, can social media still be bad for us?
Research suggests that we are sacrificing too much of our mental-health, well-being as well as our time on social media, such a communication tool could be regarded as an ‘abstract presence’, which could potentially metaphorically be presenting the ‘effects of a drug’.
Social media can bring about countless different feelings and be the cause of several issues, for instance, depression, eating disorders as well as other health issues. An endless stream of stress is often resembled as an ‘aftereffect’ of social media. This is exposed through unimportant thoughts, such as how many likes you have on your media handle on a photo as compared to your friends. Although this type of reinforcement can build self-confidence, it can also destroy it!
Social media not only exposes young people to certain beauty standards but also develops different ways of perceiving what ‘beauty’ is. This way of perception contributes to the development of many health issues, whether it is depression or eating disorders and to begin disliking yourself aiming to be like others on social media. Research suggests that this does not just affect females but men too. The advertising of models being pretty, charming and ‘thin’ brings a sense of dissatisfaction to people with their own bodies -they are sending across the wrong message regarding what is acceptable and what is not.
There has always been a notion that models are a certain way such as slim and eye catching and has always been shown in the media. Before the progression of social media, television advertisements and billboard adverts were the way forward which meant that it was to promote products but as people are on their phone’s constantly for many hours a day, these images of being perfect and acceptable are popping up every other minute - this is a constant reminder of how todays idea of acceptable is. This is leading young people to damage their health by going on extreme diets to lose weight in order to look ‘good’. This also affects people mentally as they are irritable and desperate to fit in todays generation causing negative affects on the mind leading to depression.
Overall, Social media has many benefits, but does, indeed, have its drawbacks. Research clearly suggests that people who are on social media for more time are damaging their health both physically and mentally and to tackle this issue, people need to be educated on how social media use could be making them feel about themselves as social media use is correlated with depression, stress and anxiety.

A former Facebook employee has accused the company of putting profit over the public good, after coming forward as the whistleblower who leaked a cache of internal documents that have placed the tech firm in its worst crisis since the Cambridge Analytica scandal. Frances Haugen - who is due to testify in Congress today - came forward on Sunday as the whistleblower behind a series of damaging reports in the Wall Street Journal that have heaped further political pressure on the tech giant. Haugen told the news program 60 Minutes that Facebook’s priority was making money over doing what was good for the public. She has been called to testify before the US Senate’s commerce subcommittee on the risks the company’s products pose to children. Lawmakers called the hearing in response to a Wall Street Journal story based on Haugen’s documents that showed Facebook was aware of the damage its Instagram app was causing to teen mental health and wellbeing. Haugen will argue that Facebook’s closed design means it has no oversight, even from its own oversight board, a regulatory group that was formed in 2020 to make decisions independent of Facebook’s corporate leadership. She also alleges that Facebook's decision to prematurely reinstate old algorithms, valuing engagement above all else, contributed to the 6 January attack on the Capitol building. “As soon as the election was over, they turned them back off or they changed the settings back to what they were before, to prioritise growth over safety. And that really feels like a betrayal of democracy to me,” she said. Facebook has aggressively contested the accusations. #facebook #whistleblower #socialmedia #socialmediaplatforms #mentalhealth #youngpeople #algorithm #capitolattack #usnews #congress #politics
